Just a ragtime girl Liv'n in an 1890's world She took a midnight wagon *And died of dysentery 2 months later before reaching her destination because it was the 1800's*
I got SO excited that I got featured like that...! ...And then I got Rickrolled. But oh my god, you have no idea how much this means to me. "Africa" is a song that holds so much significance to me, and hearing you take up my request like this makes me happy beyond belief.
I could see all four of these being used in a parody of Red Dead Redemption. _Don't Stop Believin'_ was kinda hard to recognize, but the rest were pretty obvious.
This is literally the best piano series that has ever existed... I am dying right now... and the subtitles... they keep escalating every time. I don't know how it's done :)
But for real though there is a Tom we really should pray for, Tom Brier is a ragtime pianist and man he blows my mind. Unfortunately he is hospitalized atm. Search him up.
Dude, place some hints to the subtitles, seriously. The already entertaining vids you do increase in value by a factor 100! People, activate subs for this!
Second best rickroll I've ever seen. Best one was a video titled "ten best Muppet scenes" (or something like that) but ended up being the Muppets doing "Never Gonna Give You Up."
Bravo! I must commend YT for suggesting something I didn't know that I needed in my life, but I'm glad to now have it. 😄 The close-captioning is definitely a 'value added', so again, thank you for that!
OP: Ragtime is one of the happiest styles of piano. Me: Try Ragtime-ing some Doom 1 or Doom 2 songs, but without converting them out of their minor key signatures? Call it Sadtime
You should do a sequel to this video. The world needs 3 more 80s songs that should never be played in ragtime. And I'm not just saying this because my suggestion didn't get picked.
Keep up the good work! If Scott Bradlee can do it for swing, you can do it for ragtime. People relate to songs they know. Anything to gets them to appreciate musicians with real chops on real instruments is great.
4 videos and you have inspiered me to learn ragtime. I mean litterally. I play piano and am currently searching UA-cam videos on ragtime. Thank you so much.
Don’t stop believing turned out pretty good. Would be especially cool as an intro to an EDM or rock song. Interesting how translating music from one style to another can almost create it’s own unique type of music.
What a delightful find, I'm in love with this sound! Brings back some great memories whilst transporting me somewhere brilliantly new. Off to find more!
dude, I'd so totally pay to own full length versions of all your ragtime rip-offs. i like your versions better than i like the original. 😮 oh, i know! do a collaboration with @postmodernjukebox! that would probably be amazing!
Damn, Jonny. You always know how to put a smile on my face. In fact, when I heard today that my grandma died, I was devestated. What happens next is I go to my computer, see a notification in the bottom right corner of my screen with your picture. Instant smile. I would say God Bless You, but I'm not religious, so I'm just gonna say take care of your loved ones, and do us all a favor and be a great dad! I love you, man (not in a gay way, jeez, chill)
First, thank you for continuing this essentially and uniquely American art form. The last time I heard two fisted piano, I was 18 and performing Dixieland with a group of 80-somethings who could barely walk, but they could play. Their stories were worth more than the experience. And I learned how to play traditional jass. I think it's more important than ever to keep the styles alive and this the best way to do that.
Every single time I watch one of your videos, I have to be reminded by the comments to TURN THE CAPTIONS ON!!! :D Excellent music, and great comedy to accompany it while we listen. Let's see, things that probably shouldn't be ragtime (given that it's so happy): Imperial March Adagio in G minor (Albinoni) Adagio for Strings (Samuel Barber) Beethoven's 7th symphony, 2nd movement. Some of the sadder songs by Enya (I know these are too long to make a video to attract today's short attention spans, but they're the saddest pieces of music I can think of, plus the Imperial March :) ).
The way he moves his hands when he plays in ragtime reminds me of how Flint Lockwood types on his computer in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
Jaron Hudson YOU RIGHT??
That's oddly specific
Oh my god your right
"I'd like a turkey, stuffed with pizza, deep fried and dipped in chocolate!"
Jaron Hudson 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Here’s an idea: de-ragtime ragtime songs.
That's a brilliant idea. How would you start that task though?
@@markp8295 my guess would be to try to isolate the main melody, slow it down and reharmonize it. It would definitely be difficult and interesting.
That sounds brilliant as hell
De-ragtime Super Mario Bros. 3 athletic theme
Unironically yes this is a good idea. Find a genre to map it to before actually changing it.
Me: It's bedtime
UA-cam: It's not though, is it? Here's Africa by Toto in ragtime.
Me: I will allow it
Same!
😂
"Me: I will allow it" OK you can have you feeble notion that you are in the control.
Same
Can someone make some mp3 versions and torrent them?
Africa with ragtime might be one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard.
*everyone agrees*
Josh Hodge I was skeptical at first, but it was pretty cool!
Honestly it worked surprisingly well!
I have a love/hate relationship with Africa/Toto but I'd love to have the whole song like this.
Agreed
This dude: * sits down at piano *
His hands: "Aw shitt, here we go again."
I really wanted “Take on me”by A-Ha
C.J. Yes yes yes PLEASE Take On Me!!
Take on me would be epic 👌
Take on Me and Don’t Stop Believing has the same chord progression so they r fairly interchangeable. 2 for 1 I guess?

YES! And Never Gonna Give You Up.. wait is that 80's? If not then, maybe Come On Eileen.
wtf, just as I was typing, he rick rolled me..
Never? You should *aways* play these in ragtime!
Eduardo Avila 100% agree!!
Yes please!!!!!
nicholas lang aways isnt like "every time"?
nicholas lang like always
Agreed totos Africa is ragtime is awesome
Just a ragtime girl

Took the midnight wagon on the Oregon Trail clearly
Adam Uhrynuk ^^underrated comment
Or they got cholera. Also an issue back then
This totally cracked me up in the wee hours haha
They still had trains, yeah ?
Yeah, the word "NEVER" here is bullshit. I can easily imagine cowboys in a saloon punching each other to these songs. Nice work.
But ragtime was the 20s and 30s..?
@@hannakirik5211 Then those cowboys must be really ahead of their time!
Hanna Moriarty hey rag time started in the late 19th century, so their vision of cowboys in saloons is correct.
"Hey, nobody touch the piano man, I like that song and..." Bam, a bottle in da face. Another night in the saloon
I think it is more about hands being ruined by trying to play thing
“Do you think I pee out ragtime?”
Living for these subtitles
Now play “The Entertainer” as death metal...
Tanuki Man Rob Scallion sounds like the type of guy who’s done that
I'd love to hear that!
How about the Baby Shark as death metal? ua-cam.com/video/POdbe-_bYbs/v-deo.html
Yes!!!
Pretty sure that’s already been done.
WOW! Africa! The unique rhythm of that song could not have been easy to fit into the ragtime genre. I tip my hat to you sir! 🎩👍🏼

M'lady, *tips fedora*
I want a full version of Africa in ragtime because that was awesome
I bless the rains
The song's melody is already rather syncopated and ragtime uses a syncopated right hand, so it's actually not that far fetched to do.
I got SO excited that I got featured like that...!
...And then I got Rickrolled.
But oh my god, you have no idea how much this means to me. "Africa" is a song that holds so much significance to me, and hearing you take up my request like this makes me happy beyond belief.
Ocareening I thought your comment was hilarious. Definitely worthy of a feature. Thanks for the awesome request!
Jonny May You're very welcome. I was so honoured!
Congrats on getting featured!
That “Africa” rendition blew my mind. Great job!
Yeah
“Ragtime: a poor person’s time-keeper”
people that aren’t reading the subtitles are missing out
Reading the subtitles is almost as good as his playing
Thanks for the tip: excellent upgrade to the entertainment.
"...and in a burst of rage she shot poor Tommy..."
duuuuuuuuuuuude
Sara Andersson haha that was brilliant 😂
"Don't Stop Believing" was actually pretty damned cool in Ragtime. Just had that whole '20s Speakeasy feel to it =)
The twenties are back, my friend!
That’s because both that song, and Africa were written by talented and accomplished musicians.
I agree I greatly enjoyed that one
Nah, I disliked the ragtime version
Yeah totally! It was my fave too! The chords sounded better than in the actual song! Lolol
I could see all four of these being used in a parody of Red Dead Redemption. _Don't Stop Believin'_ was kinda hard to recognize, but the rest were pretty obvious.
Hard to recognize but still sounded great
I'm glad I'm not the only one who found it difficult.
Strange, I found it the most recognizable!
Really it was just the chord sequence
Living on A Prayer is by far my most hated song. From the vocals to the music, it’s absolutely horrible. No positive qualities, at all.
This is literally the best piano series that has ever existed... I am dying right now... and the subtitles... they keep escalating every time. I don't know how it's done :)
Sheets Music I've never realised that there are subtitles on this series! I'm almost dying of laughter right now - thank you!
This was the first time I had subtitles on for one of these. Brb watching all the videos over again with subtitles on.
No problem... That's what this comment section is here for!
Pls don't die
I'll try not to... It turned out in this case, that after a long struggle, I actually managed to survive.
2:51 LOL.. started humming for a few seconds before I had the thought "Hey, thats not Africa" xD Thank you for this video.. was really uplifting
Nope, it's "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley.
It’s darude sandstorm
@@asdabir no its sarude danstorm
Whoever did the English captions... u are a treasure.
Hahahaha I just realized that it got captions, its funny tho 😂
Never ever forget to switch on the caption for these videos! 😂😂
How have I never known this! Thank you for saving me!!!!!
I actually don’t know this too till now at least
I just finished the video when I read your comment... now I've seen it all twice!
You discovered me a whole new world! Thanks!
Consider yourself a small-scale hero. Ha
The Captions are FANTASTIC!
Piano Man watched with captions. Still don't get it...
Wow, Africa really translated quite well.
Would love to hear Styx "Come Sail Away" in ragtime, if you do a 1970's version!
Yes
Eeeevery song is a ragtime song - the writers just had no clue !
You're a genius and a truckload of fun to listen to !
But for real though there is a Tom we really should pray for, Tom Brier is a ragtime pianist and man he blows my mind. Unfortunately he is hospitalized atm. Search him up.
Agreed his playing is really something to watch/hear, considering he sight reads stuff it's astonishing
he is the best!
Oh wow, I had no idea. Tom Brier is my "early days youtube" ragtime favorite. He's a sightreading genious!
Here’s the important thing: he looks like he’s having so much fun
This is brilliant! I'd love to hear Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody in Ragtime,
I actually kind of enjoyed the ragtime version of Africa.
You may also like Hackney Colliery Bands version of Africa.

Hey guys. Since we're at it... You have to check out Peter Bences version of Africa!! You will not regret it ;)

💀💀💀😂😂😂
😂
this person literally writing an entire fanfic
The captions should have been in the actual video 😂 they're hilarious!
Ayanna Watts
You’ve changed my life
The video just got a 100% better
Living on a prayer sounded like an anime theme
Dude, place some hints to the subtitles, seriously. The already entertaining vids you do increase in value by a factor 100! People, activate subs for this!
thanks man, appreciate your comment, instantly rewatched with subs on, good stuff.
You can thank @Shai Hulud for a new Sub my man :)
I was lucky to have already activated them.. worth it!
Thanks for the reminder!! He always does this, and I always forget.
I replayed the video IMMEDIATELY after reading this comment 😂
loving the captions, if you're not reading them you're missing out
Rickrolled. Should’ve seen that coming a mile off. 😂

Probably your best subtitles yet!! And great arrangements of these songs btw!
This video needs more attention. Look at how this man plays the piano, it’s absolutely insane. Actually gave me goosebumps.
100% recommend playing with captions turned on
Do ragtime versions of Disney songs! (Probably best to avoid Princess and the Frog though)
Jenifer Joseph aw i like the songs in that movie tho
No I say that because in that movie, it's ALREADY ragtime
yes! We need to see that now!
Jenifer Joseph Well, Ragtime and Jazz, with a bit of Soul (I think) if you remember Mama Odie.
Check out Kristen Mosca!

I'm loving it! As usual, I really want to hear full-length versions of these songs (especially Africa).
When it's 1:16 in the morning and you're about to go to bed but another interesting thing pops up in your UA-cam feed 😂
Okay but living on a prayer is already fire and you just burned my house down
Amazing talent--not only arranging these, but playing them! Wow! Thanks for sharing!
I love the captions, people who don't have them are missing out.
I think there can't be a ragtime version for Hooked on a Feeling.
Or maybe Welcome To The Jungle?
careful, your challenge might be accepted.
