      +fredmachine Is that seriously what you think Gary Holt's playing consists of?

    • @fredmachine
      @fredmachine 9 років тому +14

      Nick Wallace Well, at least he's not limiting himself to pentatonics (so maybe King might actually learn something from this after all). But yeah, Holt is a good rythm guitarist and decent songwriter (for Thrash Metal. Just don't let him write the lyrics. His lyrics in Exodus gave me an aneurysm), but his lead playing isn't exactly the most inventive or interesting out there. And let's be honest, he abuses the wah pedal just as much as Kirk Hammett. Hey, it's cool, it's Thrash Metal after all. Not a genre generally known for being technically demanding...

    • @dkyelak
      @dkyelak 8 років тому +15

      It is actually an A note with heavy panned and delay effects. It is indeed a joke as he says I don't mean to yank your chain. Gary has an incredible sense of humor.

    • @honigdachs.
      @honigdachs. 8 років тому +30

      Nah, it's a G. Delay and panning don't pitch down the sound by a whole tone. He probably calls it an A out of habit, because he's playing the 5th open string, which in standard tuning is an A. His guitar is tuned down a whole tone, turning the A to a G.

    • @dkyelak
      @dkyelak 8 років тому +1

      Jimmy Hellfire I stand corrected. I am downtuned and am just used to hearing it that way. Yeah, it is the open a string position but tuned down. Don't hear much metal in standard tuning anymore.

I wasn't born till 95, and after my whole Metallica phase "metalhead dues" I became and still remain a devoted Megadeth and Dave Mustaine fan. Exodus and Slayer still give me chills though, as does Testament. Point being, this bastard is a metal monster down to his bones. what he's doing is fairly simple and repetitive from a harmonic standpoint. It's playing it fast, clean, and making is sound bad ass that's the hard part.

    • @deadenddude
      @deadenddude 8 років тому +5

      Holt, like most metal players uses a lot of repeating patterns. Once you recognize the patterns it takes a lot of the mystery out of it. Few metal players really stump me as I understand most of their tricks and tools. Now jazz players...that's another story. I listen to guys like Pat Martino, John Scofield, and Ted Greene and I get lost and feel like a rookie.

      Nope, the guitar player joining Exodus after Kirk left was Rick Hunolt and together they made the well-known H Team being an awesome guitar duel on the first Exodus records and best friends even within drug addictions and stuff. Long story short, Gary's the founding member ;)

    • @MetalHeart8787
      @MetalHeart8787 11 років тому

      Holt wasn't asked Kirk was. IF you are implying that kirk should have stayed in Exodus & Gary joined Metallica then NO way many fans are used to what happened Kirk fit Metallica & Gary was perfect fro Exodus. if gary wanted to stay Metal he just would have left Metallica since James & Lars have always had the say in what happens. Exodus slighty sold out to on force of habit & if they got popular & made more money they would have stayed in that direction.
