Yup, pretty much. I used to seek speed that I didn't have, and now that I have it, I find myself trying not to use it, lol. I'll actually make effort to slow down and keep it melodic, and it's actually pretty easy to do, because the faster stuff is somehow more "boring". That's no surprise, the faster stuff is usually pre-learned and practiced licks (yawn), whereas playing more melodically is actually more challenging, more improvisational and therefore more interesting to play.

I get so much joy from Marty dunking on technique only shredders. It's the reason why most guitarists playing his solos note perfect still don't sound like him playing (even in his own band). Bc Marty understands knowing how to break the rules is real mastery. He isn't a slave to technique. And also melody is important to him. I'm always amazed listening to him compared to other shredders of how much actual composition goes on in his riffs and solos. They're actually musical and not just a lot of fast notes. But still done with blazing speed and skill.

These videos severely altered my perception of my own guitar playing years ago when they were released. I didn't like what he was saying at the time about playing fast not being cool, etc... I took his words to heart and wow my playing improved tenfold these past 5 years or so putting this stuff to practice. I can actually express myself as a musician on the guitar now instead of playing sweep picking up and down stuff to "impress" rather than create actual music. Love ya Marty!

There seems to be a fair amount of misunderstanding regarding Marty's comments on sweep picking. He's not saying it doesn't have a place in music but when it's used in the context of technique at the loss of being musical, it's no longer inspiring to the ears. It might as well be a typewriter. I've lost count at the number of times I've heard guitarists sweep just to remind me of how many hours they spent in the woodshed but from the perspective of hearing something truly musical, with the notable exception of Jason, those runs are forgotten damn near as quick as they begin. Friedman's "bllllliiip, burliiiip" description is spot on. Marty played solos that people are still humming to 20 years later. Nobody gives a flying fuck about sweep runs 2,000 shredders were all doing in the 80's. If you couldn't use the technique like Becker and make it MUSICAL, what the hell was the point? Playing something cool in the era of it being cool is one thing. Playing something cool that remains cool a quarter century later is what separates the artists from the kings of practice.
Can't argue with some one who knows his Becker... But just remember, making music like he does is not something you just go out and do. You gotta allow people to practice you know. I have respect for any one who is practicing real hard to get to the point, where they feel like they can make music just the way they want to :) But i definitely get Friedmans point about adding some more musical variations to the "bllllliip, burliiiip".
Indeed. Jason Becker's sweeping was used as one tool to make the music he wanted to play possible. And the biggest thing for me in Jason Becker's music is actually the composition, it reminds me of classical greats, like Beethoven or Liszt.
Yep, agree. I remember at one of the Ozzfests, they had an area where people could take turns with a guitar and amp and play for awhile. There was this one guy that just did sweeping over and over. Sure, it looks and sounds impressive but after awhile, it's like ok but can you do anything else. If you hear sweep picking from professional guitarists, it will typically be in one spot during a solo and real quick. They're not going to just sweep over and over again, because that's not musical. Soloing is about more than just being fast and like Marty said, learning specific techniques. The top priority is to make it sound good with the backing rhythm.

Marty's a pretty chill guy, but "shred" is definitely a trigger word for him. He'll be completely chill, and then somebody will talk about shred guitar and he'll just completely lose it and start rambling. And it's not jealousy or insecurity, because when he played with Jason back in the 80s he did some crazy shit. I think he genuinely just hates soulless shred, and he's just not eloquent enough to really explain it. But I definitely see where he's coming from. Look behind the rambling.

Some of his pieces are very very difficult to play, even for the most experienced player. It would be like a surgeon instructing how to do heart surgery over the phone to a regular person. There's no way to get it through, unless they already have a high high skill level. What folks don't realize is Friedman was 'too good' of a guitarist for Megadeth, and went under rated all of his career. You can go to any dive bar or place where bands play, and you can see all kinds of covers----especially Metallica. Seems like any beginner guitar player---starts with Metallica. Seems like any player, learning to play lead, plays Metallica. How many times do you see a beginner or a cover band, doing Marty Friedman pieces? Not many. It's because most can't. Least not correctly.
To this day, Friedman is _still_ lumped in with the 1980s "shred" guitar craze along with the likes of his former Shrapnel label mates Malmsteen, Moore, Gilbert, and MacAlpine and he resents this.

@@squidwardstesticles5914 Actually a noise gate helps alot if don't perfectly mute all the strings, if u play alot through a noise gate it's a little fucked up when u try a normal amp again (guilty). But it def. Sounds better cause every amp has those sounds u rly don't wanna hear.
Noise gate is just an auto mute, it doesn't help you if you play a note, but the previous (or accidentaly strummed or resonating) note still rings and they sound shit together under distortion.
@@gryzewIf that accidently slightly strummed or resonating note is louder than the db setting from your noisegate, than yes u will hear it. But anyways it's a world of difference imo.
If your 'intended' note is loud enough then it will keep the noise gate open. The unintended note will just make it sound like dissonant shit together. If noise gates filtered out only unintended notes then everybody on Earth could be a sweep picker. ;)

I've always appreciated Marty more than most shredders, because he's so musical with it. A lot of shredders just sound like show-offs, and Marty has always sounded like he's making music. Most people don't know this but one of the key factors that makes Marty's sound unique is his strange right hand. The flexed curvature is basically a modified form of the rare Gypsy Jazz style picking, which was invented to create a louder, more aggressive pick attack. He leverages a massive downward pickslant and uses circular thumb picking to get around the string change issue (for example when the pick is below the string and he needs to move to the string above). You can't reach as much consistent speed output with Gypsy style picking as you can with traditional picking but you get MUCH more power. Think of it like the difference between an AK47 and a metronome. AK47 shoots extra fast and clean in short bursts but then soon gets out of control if you keep shooting without rest, but the sound is dynamic and powerful while a metronome maintains consistent high speed, but the sound is rather weak and mechanical.
Sweeping is fine in small doses. When you repeat the same arpeggio over and over again, it loses its feel, and you start to sound like a showoff. When you have it as a way to transition between different tempos like in Tornado of Souls, then it complements the overall solo nicely.

Somewhere along the line the record industry realized it was easier to train dipshit guitarist in the same fashion they master Halo, he nailed it, technique over musicality is where its at that these days, and it's sad in a pathetic kinda way the playing a guitar as a video game is more common than to create unique music regardless of technical level.
It's really sad. Zakk wrote some really great music back in the day (pride&glory and sonic brew are some of the best albums ever for me). Back then his solos were fast but still really musical but nowadays (=after stronger than death I guess) it's all soulless pentatonic noodling and somehow generic heavy rock stuff (last 2 BLS records were better again though).
murilo ninj Zakk is still one of the best musicians out there. He is respected by his peers, who know a bit more than youtube jerkoffs about music. The guy can play banjo, piano, bass, harmonica, and sitar very fluently. Totally unfair statement on your part.

Aha yeah dude I'm used to seeing him playing with Megadeth. I think he changed guitars because he got borded of the kelly jackson. He had it for so many years after all.
I liked him in the 90's. Now I appreciate his playing even more. I quit the race to be the fastest on the block ages ago and his focus on expression over cleanliness and absolute speed resonates with me. Makes me think of Malsteen, in a way. Not the cleanest, but very much himself.
I've found that some of the solos on Rust in Piece that Marty Gets credit for were actually Dave Mustaine. They were a pretty good match for each other. Mustaine is better than I thought he was and can hold his own against a player like Friedman. That's bad ass because Daves not from a structured background like Marty.

If you hear sweep picking from professional guitarists, it will typically be in one spot during a solo and real quick. They're not going to just sweep over and over again, because that's not musical. Soloing is about more than just being fast and like Marty said, learning specific techniques. The top priority is to make it sound good with the backing rhythm.

Marty's a pretty chill guy, but "shred" is definitely a trigger word for him. He'll be completely chill, and then somebody will talk about shred guitar and he'll just completely lose it and start rambling.
And it's not jealousy or insecurity, because when he played with Jason back in the 80s he did some crazy shit. I think he genuinely just hates soulless shred, and he's just not eloquent enough to really explain it. But I definitely see where he's coming from. Look behind the rambling.

+VoyagerAbove Friedman is light years ahead of just about any guitar player. Famous player's at that. He could explain it easily------to virtuoso type players. Some of his pieces are very very difficult to play, even for the most experienced player. It would be like a surgeon instructing how to do heart surgery over the phone to a regular person. There's no way to get it through, unless they already have a high high skill level. What folks don't realize is Friedman was 'too good' of a guitarist for Megadeth, and went under rated all of his career.
You can go to any dive bar or place where bands play, and you can see all kinds of covers----especially Metallica. Seems like any beginner guitar player---starts with Metallica. Seems like any player, learning to play lead, plays Metallica.
How many times do you see a beginner or a cover band, doing Marty Friedman pieces? Not many. It's because most can't. Least not correctly.

@@squidwardstesticles5914 Actually a noise gate helps alot if don't perfectly mute all the strings, if u play alot through a noise gate it's a little fucked up when u try a normal amp again (guilty). But it def. Sounds better cause every amp has those sounds u rly don't wanna hear.
Noise gate is just an auto mute, it doesn't help you if you play a note, but the previous (or accidentaly strummed or resonating) note still rings and they sound shit together under distortion.
@@gryzewIf that accidently slightly strummed or resonating note is louder than the db setting from your noisegate, than yes u will hear it. But anyways it's a world of difference imo.
If your 'intended' note is loud enough then it will keep the noise gate open. The unintended note will just make it sound like dissonant shit together. If noise gates filtered out only unintended notes then everybody on Earth could be a sweep picker. ;)

I've always appreciated Marty more than most shredders, because he's so musical with it. A lot of shredders just sound like show-offs, and Marty has always sounded like he's making music. I love how he starts off here..."all those pickings, sweep picking, legato picking, hybrid picking...I don't know what any of that stuff is." Lol, seriously I love that. Technique is just technique, anyone can learn that with enough practice. But making music out of it is a whole new ballgame and requires a different mentality than simple musical athletics. There are lots of technical players in the world today. You'll never distinguish yourself from the pack in that way. Having a great sense of melody and harmony and being creative and artistic are where it's at. Gary Moore, Adrian Vandenberg, and Uli-Jon Roth reach me in an emotional way.

What I'm talking about is the fact that he's more relaxed about the theory bits. I've seen sooooo many youtube guitarists that just act like we're dealing with complex calculus when it comes to guitar (even on simplistic music) when in reality if you don't have the feel behind something you've lost the whole point of a piece of music. When I contrast Marty with a guy like Paul Davids (I think is his name) I'd rather watch and learn from Marty.

Most people don't know this but one of the key factors that makes Marty's sound unique is his strange right hand. The flexed curvature is basically a modified form of the rare Gypsy Jazz style picking, which was invented to create a louder, more aggressive pick attack. He leverages a massive downward pickslant and uses circular thumb picking to get around the string change issue (for example when the pick is below the string and he needs to move to the string above). You can't reach as much consistent speed output with Gypsy style picking as you can with traditional picking but you get MUCH more power. Think of it like the difference between an AK47 and a metronome. AK47 shoots extra fast and clean in short bursts but then soon gets out of control if you keep shooting without rest, but the sound is dynamic and powerful while a metronome maintains consistent high speed, but the sound is rather weak and mechanical.

Sweeping is fine in small doses. When you repeat the same arpeggio over and over again, it loses its feel, and you start to sound like a showoff. When you have it as a way to transition between different tempos like in Tornado of Souls, then it complements the overall solo nicely.

Somewhere along the line the record industry realized it was easier to train dipshit guitarist in the same fashion they master Halo, he nailed it, technique over musicality is where its at that these days, and it's sad in a pathetic kinda way the playing a guitar as a video game is more common than to create unique music regardless of technical level.

It's really sad. Zakk wrote some really great music back in the day (pride&glory and sonic brew are some of the best albums ever for me). Back then his solos were fast but still really musical but nowadays (=after stronger than death I guess) it's all soulless pentatonic noodling and somehow generic heavy rock stuff (last 2 BLS records were better again though).
murilo ninj Zakk is still one of the best musicians out there. He is respected by his peers, who know a bit more than youtube jerkoffs about music. The guy can play banjo, piano, bass, harmonica, and sitar very fluently. Totally unfair statement on your part.

I liked him in the 90's. Now I appreciate his playing even more. I quit the race to be the fastest on the block ages ago and his focus on expression over cleanliness and absolute speed resonates with me. Makes me think of Malsteen, in a way. Not the cleanest, but very much himself.

I've found that some of the solos on Rust in Piece that Marty Gets credit for were actually Dave Mustaine. They were a pretty good match for each other. Mustaine is better than I thought he was and can hold his own against a player like Friedman. That's bad ass because Daves not from a structured background like Marty.

I don't actually listen to Marty's music (not because I don't like him, he is super talented, it's just not my cup of tea) but his lessons are probably the best I've ever used to develop my musical abilities.
I don't have too many guitar idols but Marty is definitely one of them.
