- There was a vibration under the car, not much noise, I was surprised to find the exhaust flex pipe broken almost in two.
In this video I show how to replace the flex section from the dpf cat to the centre section. The repair pipe was off eBay and did not need welding, it can be fitted in situ.

My 320d started exhibiting the same issue this afternoon. Not checked the downpipe Flexi joint yet but I'm fairly confident that's what it is. Cracking video 👍

So I thought I'd post an update. Turns out, the issue I had wasn't what I thought it was. Instead it was the Dual Mass Flywheel.
Had that and the clutch replaced 👍
Cracking video that. I have exactly the same thing, so obviously quite a design fault with that exhaust. I thought exactly the same, I could hear a slight blow when I switched the engine off. I received quite a surprise when I jacked the car up and saw the main exhaust part had completely broken away. Many thanks for that!

Mine has been like this for a year now, naturally I've bodged it enough to pass an MOT.....new cross brace (source of vibration into the car) with a piece of wood bolted through the cross brace, then went to Halfords and got generic radio install holed brace/mount strip to wrap around each end (same location is broken on mine) and then 'pulled' the lot together then bolted, finally wrapped up in aluminium tape for the MOT test. Not proud but I will fix it properly now. It's having to touch all of the undertray screws that wind me up, always a nightemare! In terms of release agents, I use SeaFoam Deep Creep and most recently, Normfest Super Crack (should have got this yeeeeeeeeaaaaaarrrrrrsssssssss ago). Great video thanks!

What issues did you have with your m sport mate? I have the same issue. Have a bmw 116 m sport 2010. Ummming and urrrring on whether to get this part. What did you have to weld?

Mate what a quick fix!! Last week i had same problem my exhaust get disconnected during fu....ng 1200km travel on high way at night!!! but disconnected higher than Yours closer to DPF and that's saves me because all exhaust hang over bottom engine cover f... lucky me.... But who's know Germans high way had a speed bump.... yes speed bump on High way with speed reduced only until 60km/h for M-Pak suspension was too hard... Peace Out BMW freaks!!

I too have a broken flexi on my x1 and Was told by a garage that the whole DPF and flexi assembly needs replacement as they can't clamp or weld the flexi as this will cause MOT failure as it would be hard to prove dpf filter wasn't tampered during the replacement

Lucky the mesh was still hanging on. If it had snapped, the pipe may have speared into the ground. Would have cost you for a new pipe as well as the flexi. Just in time!

@@markoknezevic7614 it went well. I was doing it on the floor so was quite tedious getting appropriate access with the grinder but managed in the end. If you have access to proper ramps or a lift I’d highly recommend.

Thanks for this nice video, I have exactly the same issue. I was able to unmount the part on the exhaust side without heating, just with some tools and but unscrewing the bolt. The repair kit I ordered from ebay (everyexhaustpart) has only one clamp. The size is the same as original. I was able to reuse the old clamp (from the side to the exhaust). I was hard to cut the metal. There is not that many space and I cut too closed to the dfp. I put enough paste. It takes a long time to dry (manual says 30 minutes but it takes longer for me).

When I let the clutch out and let the RPM hover around 1000rpm I hear a rattle noise, definitely something heatshield/exhaust sounding. Mine is an F20 116d.

I have the flexi broken on my 05 e61 530d used the same company as you did but they didn’t send clamps just recommended spot wield
Just need to find out which clamps will work best

Why you don't just remove the DPF. The screws are easy to remove, and the plugs get off pretty easy without problems. This saves time in total and you'll have space to work on the flex.

The flexi you show in the video from Amazon is a weld on one and pretty low quailty

@@aaanton11 I could understand if there was a matching flange on the new flexi but I can't see how the ring would hold the new flexi in place and support the weight of the exhaust?
I ordered the kit you mentioned for my ‘11 318d N47 but it doesn’t really looks like yours. Also the diameter is way too small so the flex pipe is really loose and just falls out of the oem dpf with the clamps tightened… Really nice “quick repair” when you need your car asap on the road 😢

Hi Aaaton, I am pleased to see your video on how to repair Exhaust Flex Repair. I have BMW 118D M SPORT E87/N47 2008 5 Door Hatchback. I logged on to the Ebay (seller/dealer) - everyexhaustpart to buy the Exhaust repair section. The Ebay seller stated to contact them IF I HAVE A M SPORT, and Ebay part seller had to say this
(Unfortunately we are not sure if these are suitable for the M Sport systems, We have had some customers who fitted these no problem whereas others had issues so we cannot be 100% certain.
I can send you the measurements of this part if you are able to check against your exhaust?
It's usually the DPF end which is the issue, It's shorter on the M sport System so may need to be welded rather than clamped)

@@aaanton11 i know i just meant i followed your way of pressing them in, bought the tools from the description. mine are the ones with active steering style abs sensors with magnetic abs ring in the rear of the bearing itself. but now i have some crazy goings on until i remove the abs sensors. mental.

My flexi snapped and then I ordered this kit and it was fitted by the garage, ever since then there's been a really strong fume smell in the cabin
It's been back to the garage and they fitted a new clamp around the turbo-dpf side of the exhaust and it fixed the problem a bit but not completely

Just a thought when you got the flexi pipe bit of the end of the DPF there was good access into the filter itself

That's a hell of a job but works like a charm :) Thank you so much - I'm going to do the same because I can hear already some noise out of this pipe. Could you please just let me know where you put the stands that car is holding safe without the trolly jack? I've got always a problem with that in my E91... Doesn't look safe and I always leave the jack as well which makes such repairs much harder in terms of movements etc... THank you !!!

I came to your extremely well made video looking for answers for another problem I'm having with my 2003 530d. It's leaking oil right where the flex hose (the braided one) meets the exhaust pipe. Is there a seal there, that can fail?

Nice work and nice video, I have same model 2009 e92, but I'm not sure if I have exhaust leak with it or not, but comes a wired smell from engine room. Is it exhaust leak? Cuz I have checked cooling system, fuel system and engine, everything was fine. So what you thinking about that?

I am asking because on the original part on the DPF side is showing 55mm pipe, so if it's 55 mm how was possible to join them together ?

Flywheel sounded abit rattly when you started it whilst camera underneath

@@aaanton11 these engines are great to be honest, apart from the timing chains there aint alot of cars in the price range of these that can easily do 50mpg £30 tax and has some power really.

Was there any codes showing up. My flexi is showing early signs of wear and is quite flexible. I'm thinking if gases are leaking could this cause maf sensor out of range fault p0101.

The design of the exhaust for this model is really a nightmare for the DIY mechanics. If you had got a welder, it would have been much easier than this.
