    Take a pressure cooker pot
    1 Cup Toor dal
    (Yellow split pigeon peas)
Wash and clean in water minimum 3 times.
    4-5 Garlic cloves
    3 Slit Green chillies
    1 Tbsp Ginger finely chopped
    1 Medium Tomato roughly chopped
    1 Small Onion Sliced
    Salt to taste
    1/3 Tsp Tumeric powder
    1/3 Tsp Asafoetida powder (Hing)
    3 Cups Water
    Stir well
Cover the lid & pressure cook on medium flame for 3 whistles
Cook for 10 mins on very low flame.
    Switch off the gas
    Tempering
Heat the pan/pot on medium flame.
    2 Tbsp Ghee heaped
You can also use oil but ghee makes the dal more tasty
    1/2 Tsp Mustard seeds
    1/2 Tsp Cumin seeds
    Allow to splutter
    2 Dry Kashmiri Chillies
    15-20 Curry leaves
    3 Garlic cloves sliced (optional)
    1 Green Chilli ( Optional)
Sauté for 1-2 mins on medium to low flame
Till the flavours are infused in ghee and you can smell the aroma.
    1/4 Tsp Asafoetida powder (Hing)
Mix well & Switch off the gas
Remove whistle and open the lid
If pressure still exists, release the pressure carefully before opening the cooker.
Add the tempering to the dal
    Bring to boil
At this stage adjust salt if required.
Handful of finely chopped coriander leaves
    Mix well
    Switch off the gas
Cover with lid for 1-2 mins so the flavours infuse in the dal.
Yummy and delicious dal is ready
    Serve hot with rice.
    Notes and Tips:
    - You can also substitute toor dal with moong daal. You can also do half and half ratio is you prefer.
    - Moong dal is healthier substitute to toor dal as it is easily digestible
    - If you have time then soak dal for 20-30 mins before cooking it. Reduces cooking time

Great video. Do you have to soak the dahl overnight before putting in the pressure cooker?

You can soak it , if you do then cooking time reduces. But I generally don’t soak it overnight.

It can vary depending on the size of cooker, heat and other factors. But if you are use to cooking daal in pressure then use your timings so you know your daal is cooked. If not then
pressure cook on medium heat for 3 whistles and then cook for 10 mins on very very low heat and switch off gas.
