Many riders become track day junkies after enjoying their first few days at the track. The limitations of street tires, even hypersport tires, quickly becomes apparent and riders switch to slicks. And of course, club, semi pro, and pro racers all ride slicks.

Greetings from Western Australia Dave. I have a question relating to the age of a slick tyre. I’ve recently bought a few sets of used slicks of varying ages and wear. I have a question about the oldest set. They are 10 year old Pirellis, they have even wear (less than 50%) and have been stored in a garage wrapped in cling wrap. Now most people will say bin them, but I’d like your expert advice based on the following: I ride a street trim Daytona 675 and do track days at an intermediate level. I have a good set of tyre warmers and have never used slicks before so wouldn’t know what the feel should be Like from either a good set or a bad set. Will these be ok as an introduction to slick tyres? Or need to go straight to the scrap pile? Thanks in advance.

      1. Is there a green sheen to the tire or blue? If blue, so far so good.
      2. Do the thumb nail test - push it hard into the tyre and see if the imprint is gone in 2 seconds or less. If not, the surface is rock hard so the grip level will be low. If you want to try them, do so with care and make sure they have been on the warmers for 50 minutes at 90C to get them hot. If you feel during the scrub in that the tires don't feel right - to the bin they go. My general rule is three years stored in a temp controlled environment AND the y pass the finger nail test.

Dave Moss Tuning cheers Dave I’ll do the finger nail test. Is this from cold? They aren’t blue or green. Just black.
      Love your work mate 👍🏼

@@PERTHSCOOTER07 You can test when they are warm as that will not effect the hardness of the carcass.

Just bought tire pressure sensor for my 2014 zx10r it also gives a temperature read out on the display mounted on my bike. Havent rode with it yet but im hoping its accurate so i can see how hot my tires get. Basically see how long it takes to get to 160 degrees. Its a valve cap blue tooth deal....thoughts?

kawi lifezx10r sounds like a gimmick, but im curious to see if its accurate.

Any tool needs calibration so you may find your read out is not aligned with an infra red gun, so see what you have as a correction factor for the visual display.

+Dave I have an infra red gun, but that reads only the temperature on the surface of the tire, unlike your tool. Is it still worth it?

Yes, the surface temps will give you an indication of where you are which is better than nothing. If the surface temps get over 100C/210F then the tire is too hot and needs a change in pressures (always try up and down).

Hey Dave. I've been watching your videos and feel lost in suspension. Guy before me lowered the bike, I'm 6 feet so I plan on putting the stock links back in. Purely street riding but I'm moving to Vegas come winter time. Hope I can catch you at a track for a quick lesson and a tune.

Cody - please answer my questions to this email: dave@davemosstuning.com. What bike and year? What is changed from stock? Miles on the bike? Tire brand and sizes? Thanks.

No longer have the option to buy single videos without getting the entire subscription?

Dave Williams, editor, replying here. Unfortunately no. We're investigating a solution. don't know how long it will take. UA-cam really screwed this up when they cancelled their program.
