  • Hello Friends! This video is about exercising and TMJD. If you're suffering from TMJD, you may be wondering how to adjust your exercise routine or if exercising is even recommended. In this video, I go over in detail exactly what I tell my patients regarding exercise and TMJD.
Because the neck and the jaw are intimately related and because many of us involuntarily recruit neck muscles during certain exercises, it will likely be useful to check out my video "Neck Pain and TMJD", which I have linked here:
    • Neck Pain & TMJD - Pri...
I didn't mention it in the video, but ab/core exercises that involve lifting he head can also involuntarily recruit neck muscles, which can negatively impact TMJD. So please be careful when exercising your core!
Also be careful with Yoga as some poses can strain the neck. A watcher made me aware of this with the following information:
“I am a former yoga instructor & yoga caused my extreme TMJD. Please be aware that poses involving hyperflexions of the neck or cranial cervical pressure/tension (arm balances, inversions, backbends, and more) can cause/contribute to TMJD.”

I lift weights and do my cardio and I find that my trip to the gym gets my blood flowing and presents a good opportunity to do my stretches specifically related to my jaw, and also work on posture at the end of my workout. Just throwing my experience into the world. Thanks for the videos!

Thank you Dr. Priya Mistry for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I was diagnosed with TMJ at least 20 yrs ago due to a wisdom tooth surgery I had in which all 4 wisdom teeth were removed at once. The wisdom tooth that was removed from the lower right portion of my mouth was huge. I was seeing a TMJ specialist which did help me a lot. Unfortunately they retired 10 years ago. My symptoms have resurfaced as well and while I will be seeing a specialist (too bad it's not you because I do not live in your area), I have found your videos on home treatments (i.e. exercises for your jaw, checking your bite position to make sure you are not clenching, etc.) to be most helpful.

I find regular daily pilates makes me feel SO much better and is instant pain relief for my TMD. I also agree with jogging, and swimming is amazing. High intensity workouts make me feel horrible. It adds more stress with flares up my TMD. Exercise is so important for me in managing my symptoms. I also bought a hot tub and sit in it daily and that was a game changer in how my muscles feel in my neck and jaw!

I'm suffering TMJ issue and been watching lot of your videos to be self aware. It took me entire life to figure out why it happened in the last til now.
I saw an oral surgeon last week regarding TMJ issue and was expecting to get some more details in person but only got prescribed a pain killer and muscle relaxant.
Have been suggested to have MRI scan but in the meantime taking physio therapy for TMJ pain and it helped a bit.
I have also bought neck heat pad which you mentioned in one of your video and hope it will help more to relax neck & TMJ muscles.
Keep your amazing work. Thank you

Really really interesting. I'm trying to observe as much as i can about my TMD situation. I clench a lot at night and have a lot of tension in my jaw muscles as a result. I absolutely don't clench during the day, but at work when i lift something heavy or use a lot of force to do something like undo a bolt, i feel all this tension in the jaw/head/face. Obviously its the muscles working together, but i had been wondering if it was part of my problem and if i was unnaturally using those muscle groups together. I have since come to other more probable conclusions seeing your videos. Very helpful video.

My TMD got so bad that I developed tinnitus and I still continued powerlifting. I'm talking extremely heavy weight, including lots of upper back and shoulder work. It definitely tightens up the neck muscles but I refuse to let jaw pain and ringing ears keep me from living my life normally. Neck and jaw stretches, massage gun, hot and cold compresses and a mouth-guard at night keep it in check for the most part, but I've kinda just accepted that I'm going to live with this for the rest of my life.
I don't think we should let our disorders get in the way of life if we can do things to offset the negative effects. Yes, it's an inconvenience and doing these things takes up a lot of time, but at the end of the day I would rather be able to move around easily and be fairly strong and healthy in my old age. If the price for that is jaw pain, discomfort, and horrible tinnitus then I guess it is what it is.

I am suffering from left jaw, neck and eye pain since 3 years. I have eye pain all day everyday and I believe it’s because of TMJ. I tried orthotics but didn’t help me with any of these pains. Thank you so much for your videos on jaw exercises😊. I wish your office is in NC. I can’t sleep on my left side not even for a minute. Could you please do a video how to handle this pain during pregnancy as sleeping on left side is suggested by doctors during pregnancy which is impossible for me.

My tinnitus started after an intense CrossFit workout which included lifting small weights.. and my ear pain started in a spinning class 2 Days later..... Now almost 3 years later I only do soft Sports and I really like Chi Kung (qui gong), pilates, soft yoga..

How are your tinnitus and ear pain now?

    • @Sesilona
      @Sesilona 2 роки тому +2

@@theTMJdoc My tinnitus is very mild thank God, it almost always has been except for at the very beginning, when I had a lot of fleeting beeps "Morse code" type of tinnitus, it was so scary. If I press hard right under and behind my left ear, like in between the SCM and mastoid, the tinnitus gets higher. My muscles are so stiff there.. now I think this probably all started because of the extra muscle neck strain doing CrossFit with weights and all that..... Regarding my ear pain, well, not good at all... I developed Secondary Patulous Eustachian Tubes (that causes a lot of ear pain and pain to certain sounds) after getting an endoscopy done 2 months after the tinnitus started. "Secondary" because 2 doctors think it is caused by my muscle tensions.. A few months later my left TMJ started clicking and I started to get terrible teeth pain and Hammer like headaches just on one side, I didn't know what on Earth was going on. No one ever said it was TMD...
then a year after that I had dental work done on 2 lower molars and it totally triggered my TMD!!, I have been in pain for 15 months now (myofascial pain syndrome, pain in my face and cranium especially). I do a lot of specialized TMJ physiotherapy, chirio and myofascial intraoral release that relieves me but again I get absolutely miserable if I eat anything chewy. The dental work must of messed up my bite because the fillings were changed for new ones. In this time I have also found out I have a posterior tongue tie, I tried to get the release but myofunctional therapy totally made me worse: my Eustachian tubes opened up more and I started to get autophony and I could hear myself breathing...!! I know my story sounds crazy but it's the terrible truth. In this time I have trusted two supposedly TMJ expert dentists, but they have been an absolute disaster. I don't trust anyone anymore. Now I am seriously thinking about traveling 6 hours to an institute specialized in craneomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. And in the meantime stick on a soft diet. I am so sick of this and just want to get my life back.
