I always love how every season people pretend like it’s the first time anyone has ever complained about the politics in The Boys, when people had been complaining even before it had Stormfront directly insinuate that Pewdiepie was a Nazi.

The irony is that the original comic series was sometimes heavily criticised for being exactly that: a take on comic book superheroes that was mostly driven by superhero spite and shock value. The TV series was praised for diverging from that.

    SOME of Batman's wealthy villains:
Two-face (district attorney), Penguin (son of billionaires), Court of owls, Deadshot (son of billionaires), Hush (son of billionaires), Maxie Zeus, Ra's al gul, terrible trio, Falcone, Maroni, Black mask, Catman, Thorne, Daggett, Dr Dorian and Count Vertigo.
Batman fights crime, he doesn't profit from it. He actively loses money, blood and friends in his fight for justice.
People like Kripke can't understand this because they only see identity, not character. Bruce Wayne is a rich White guy, and to them those things are bad so Bruce must be bad also.

And that’s why Invincible succeeds where The Boys fails, Invincible is a deconstruction, but one that comes from a deep love of the super hero genre and offers a reconstruction that breaks tropes without breaking tried and true themes. The Boys meanwhile, both the comic and the show despite how much fans of the show claim it’s better, are just cynical and come from a place of hate, they offer nothing constructive, just a petty author and now showrunner venting their jealousy and spitefulness.

Legit, seeing Hughie and Butcher overcome and outsmart Translucent, and beat the ass of a corrupt superhero is such a hype and fulfilling momeny; the show would be a 10/10 if It didn't stray from the feeling and tone of this episode. It actually felt triumphant and righteous. Sadly every character has to be a piece of garbage morally. I'm still watching but I'm basically ignoring the politics.

my largest complaint in season 2, where i gave up and quit, was the boys went from a ragtag group fighting supes... to a hand full of morons who havent been murdered yet cause the plot? the black noir house scene, the grabbing a bunch of hand guns to go fight for homelanders son scene, the beached whale the deep scene, hugie in their hq scene... the list went on and on. the story writers had no fucking clue what they had, and went down a path that is honestly just pathetic. its like driving an awesome prototype vehicle with amazing power source regeneration off a cliff for the lawls

All the scenes I've re-watched from _The Boys_ were nuanced, emotional scenes like Butcher meeting his Dad. Some of the best scenes (like Homelander going back to the lab) manage to be violent and emotional at the same time. Yeah, I think the writers have really misunderstood their own show if they think it's all just about satire and violence.

That Batman critique, Batman being fascist is laughable. The crime families feature heavily in Gotham, these are rich people who own the police and control organized crime. This is in addition to his regular rouges like Joker, Poison Ivy, and Riddler. Penguin himself is rich too. If Batman is anything political he is anti-fascist. But Batman isn't political, he is a paragon story of discipline and passion, and love for his community. Yet despite that, many comics point out the consequences of his obsession, with strained ties with his "Bat Family." He is a commentary on what trauma can do to someone, there are many different reactions to different types of trauma, but one that's often seen is a strong desire to not see that done to others, and to give back to your community. That is Batman. And his no-kill rule is as understandable as it is full of negative consequences. This is why he is such a compelling character. Kripke's comments just show he doesn't know anything about Batman.

Eh, I kinda hate what his no-kill rule has become. When I got into Batman comics I started with the originals, and originally Batman did kill when necessary and stopped killing altogether when he recruited Robin. Modern Batman writers have this weird f$&king tendency to just straight up make him a psychopath, saying that the only reason he doesn’t kill is that he’d never be able to stop and would just become another mass murderer, and to me it’s just insane how this character assassination has been canonized and accepted by the fans.

@@Slender_Man_186 I agree with you there, Batman being a psychopath with his no-kill rule being there because he'd kill everyone in sight if he started is poor characterization. A Batman who killed would never let Joker live, so him not killing allows the villain to return for more stories. But I like the interpretation that he doesn't kill so that he wouldn't cause someone out there to go through what he did when his parents were gunned down. Something he sticks to even when it would be an easy case to say he should kill the villain. A character flaw of his.

Funnily enough a big problem with the show is how safe it is. It tries to pretend it is edgy by shoving gross out gore and sex, but it almost has no actual effect as that kind of thing just becomes meaningless schlock when used to much (which they do). Even with some of their most outwardly evil characters, they to are milquetoast and can’t even come out and be fully evil and abhorrent, often just barely dipping their toes into depicting the evils the comics do.
This is all is supremely ironic as the show is too safe-edgy to actually depict what a really repugnant N@zi or bigot would look like if they were given superpowers, something which the comic doesn’t shy away from. For all its flaws, the comic goes balls the to the wall for good or ill, and this helps sell the despicable characters of the superheroes.
In the show their only reference point for bad people seem to be their political opponents, so they are similarly milquetoast as the show writers opponents are in real life. Not they understand that as they view anyone who does not share their opinions as being evil.
All of this ironically takes the bite out of the people they want you to hate the most. They want you to view characters like Homelander, Stormfront, and Firecracker as evil racists and bigots (who are stand ins for their political opponents characterizes almost solely by what the popular talking points in left wing circles are at the time) but they are not actually going to be depicted as truly repugnant in their beliefs due to how restrictive Hollywood and its left wing biases are.
For example, Stormfront the literal N@zi spouts some milquetoast halfhearted lines about “Aryan purity” and never goes further than calling someone a “black piece of shit” in the show. For a N@zi she is downright progressive and has none of the despicable outwardly evil beliefs that have made them so infamous.
Homelander is to inconstant to be judged by anything other than his barely consistent character traits such as his egomania and instability. His intelligent, awareness, and power fluctuates on a dime so whatever plot needs to occur can occur regardless of if it makes no sense with how he is shown to act prior. This is especially bad regarding his powers as he straight up seems to lose his heightened senses in the newest season as he is not able to track anyone through walls anymore and his super hearing never comes into play either despite there being several scenarios where he is searching for people or loud events that he is needed for occur without him knowing and either of these would have tipped him off.
Firecracker just straight up admits she is being disingenuous and has a fairly legitimate reason for her motives. So of course they make her a p3do as of course “LOL, those dumb right wingers who are worried about child exploitation must be the real p3do’s!”. She is barely a character, she is basically just a cardboard cutout that spouts whatever right wing talking points the show runners think the right wing believes so they can point out how stupid they are, an immensely easy thing to do considering they literally can just write whatever they want into the world to makes their real world position be correct in the show.
Basically its all half-hearted, toothless, biased, and brain-rotted political commentary that is simultaneously trying to be edgy, not offend the various strict ideological beliefs of left-wing Hollywood, and hit every talking point the right wing has (or more likely than not does not actually have) rather than putting a good story first.

The problem with deconstruction is that generally speaking it's easy, therefore the creatively bankrupt can do it. Creation is much harder, but when done well, it lasts forever. Few people can paint a masterpiece, but anyone can start spray painting over it. This is why Batman, Superman, Spiderman, etc. will mean something long after this series is over, because it is part of the creation of a modern (originally American but now worldwide) mythos. The people who built these characters: Stan Lee, Bob Kane, Siegel and Shuster, Christopher Reeves, Kevin Conroy, will be remembered for their parts in building and portraying those myths.
Making everything dark and twisted only works so long as the darkness and twists are presented as deviations. Once you make them the norm, they no longer have the same impact on the viewer. The Joker works in a world where people don't all embrace Nietzsche nihilism and Marquis de Sade hedonism, aka the real world.

For those who try to make a hopeful through adversity story, it can often become a Pollyana nightmare of "They've killed and graped everyone I care about, even my dog, but gosh darned it I'm gonna smile right through it!" and they just keep piling on horrific traumas to up the ante. In response, most modern writers seem to say "Yep, that stinks, so let's just do a hopeless nihilistic mess where anyone with the slightest hint of good is a hypocrite, an idiot, or killed off horribly."

Copy/Pasting from the full efap my opinion on this:
Honestly I hate The Boys as a comic so much it's pretty surprising that the show managed to be worse. My initial hope was that after Season 1 they'd veer into a somewhat serious story about people reverse engineering Compund V and The Seven (and assorted other 'heroes') being tapped to actually fight fellow supers, being given actual challenges and responsibilities to force them to mature, slowly realising how awful they were as people.
Also I wanted the entire thing with Becca Butcher to be that she willingly slept with Homelander and cheated, and was shuffled away by Vought without Homelander knowing about his son - another layer of Homelander being FORCED to take responsibility, and explore his actual feelings coming to terms with this. An all powerful - for the most part - character who thought he would never have actual meaningful connections suddenly finding he can have kids? amazing storytelling opportunity for an actual redemption story. Over time using this to show Homelander maturing as a person while Butcher deteriorates in response to the injustice done to him by his Wife and life overall. all these different, novel character concepts that you can do in an actually pretty good satire of these childish, irresponsible and incompetent Supers being made to actually be useful - possibly with Homelander as the enforcement mechanism to make them act, possibly via Vought or The Government threatening Becca and His Son.
Imagine the character dynamics of a Homelander desperate to build the idealistic, fake idea of a family he's seen - believing he could, in doing so, gain the happiness and contentment inherent to it - with a woman who he didn't even know was married when they had a fling - All while Becca struggles with the guilt of cheating on her husband because of the allure of power. Then the genuine character interaction of Homelander telling Butcher that he didn't know they were married and she came onto him. A single event facilitating the redemption and repair of a person born in a lab as a test subject while breaking a normal man.

The cool hero butcher in season 1 could become the villain by the end the show with homelander being redeemed and going from villain to hero. Instead I think the writers just check the news once a week and cut and paste their super hero characters onto real people and send off the script for the actors. They literally use Jan 6 in the finale for S4 bro like how lazy are you??

Then saw my roommates watch the newest season and my head hurt seeing the cringe "right wing" rally and how everything is full blown not even subtle, artistic, political bias like all movies have already. Then my roommate brought it up later and asked, "Have you been keeping up with the boys?" I said hell no, it's too politically charged and cringe. And even though they are more ok with the themes and beliefs in the show, they told me how cringe it has become and it's just become almost a different show.

Similar to what Suicide Squad did with the Justice League. Or the Jedi in The Acolyte. The far left's cynicism of these characters makes no sense because it isn't based on rationale but resentment. They are programmed to associate white men with evil, whether it's the things they created or the characters themselves, and so it all must be deconstructed or destroyed. Honestly I have hated the boys from season one. That first season was the best but to me it only had good scenes and generally poor writing around it. The only reason I watched the first 3 seasons is a friend kept saying what great satire it was and how they loved it. I did my own impression of the longman and meticulously pointed out every idiotic thing I saw each season.
In addition I don't feel like enough attention is paid to the difference in portrayal of these scenes. With starlight it was hard to watch but the camera cut away quickly and we transitioned to the aftermath.
When the deep got assaulted we actually watched it happen. Even getting a close up shot of his dead eyed expression as the woman calls him a freak and keep putting her fingers in his gills. Which he said hurt and he told her to stop. Something I rarely see discussed by anyone. I get the deep is a bad guy, but why does a man being assaulted like that not warrant the same respect? Feels like something similar here happend with Hughie, I refuse to watch and find out.
Also Gen V was just outright disgusting and stupid as a show and I genuinely hated watching it.

Also, the pretty apt description of _The Boys_ as a show: "We made our own take on a popular genre by making every character an asshole, BAM! Deconstruction!", reminds me of a Terrible Writing Advice video where he talked about hack writers thinking like this. It's every other edgy capeshit parody under the sun at this point, and frankly, everytime I hear a discussion about it, I just yearn more for the fun times we used to have in superhero movies and media. I feel the same with Invincible, but obviously it's not the same type of take on superheroes. I just don't find the soul in this genre anymore. You just keep stacking shock value after shock value to get people's eyes on it.

It was deconstructing the genre in a way that wasn’t even remotely intriguing. It was edgy for the sake of being edgy not because it was trying to be unique. It wasn’t interesting. And knowing how modern Hollywood is of course you knew they would go too far with the show’s political leanings. The Boys was ass then and it doesn’t surprise me that it’s still ass now.
