If you can't join 'em, beat 'em! When his long-time dance partner abandons him for the Ziegfeld Follies, Don Hewes decides to show who's who what's what by choosing any girl out of a chorus line and transforming her into a star. So he makes his choice and takes his chances. Of course, since Fred Astaire portrays Don and Judy Garland plays the chorine, we know we're in for an entertainment sure thing.

I agree with "julia child" - I like watching Fred Astaire but Judy mesmerizes me. There is something that draws you to her. She was truly one of a kind.
Don't you just love that high note she gives at the end? I swear, that D she hits is done so well I could play it over and over.
I can’t help but think that all of the extras in the background of this scene had to break out in applause after each take was filmed!
If humanity survives the next thousand years or so without dramatic disruption on the scale of really awful space event, humanity will then have a millennium of audio/film/video records. Long after The Beatles have been relegated to a niche in social/cultural history, people will still be astonished at Judy Garland.
She died 50 years ago today. He died 32 years ago today. Both of them gone. You will not see talent like this again. Thank you both for all the films you left behind!
Both June 22nd.
Fred Astaire was an amazing, top class dancer and a good singer. Judy Garland was an amazing, top class singer and a good dancer. Seeing them together in this movie is a real treat - a dynamite duo.
@Laura...Agreed. She COMPLEMENTED, never COMPETED with either Astaire or Kelly. In contrast, I felt Kay Thompson was competing, even, maybe not intending to, upstaging Astaire in "Funny Face." It was in Thompson's mugging for the camera that was off putting, although I was a fan of Thompson's. On these threads, someone observed that Garland was not technically a good dancer. I'm puzzled by what the writer meant.
@@ccaammiinniiito2
Kay Thompson did not like filming. She was talked into appearing on screen by Roger Edens (also camera-shy) because he felt nobody else could sell 'Think Pink' in 'Funny Face' as well.
Her brief was to dilute Audrey's twee and fey traits with some astringency in the absence of a heroine's-cynical-confidante character such as Joan Blondell or Patsy Kelly would have played. Maybe that was why Thompson gives it so much oomph.
What about Debbie Reynolds.
My wife and I were in the local beer joint and this song came on, we shocked everybody in the joint by jumping up from the bar and executing this dance perfectly. Then we sauntered back to our beers.
When it comes to sheer talent, Astaire and Garland are as legendary as they come, but Garland had some extra “It” factor or level of charisma that makes her riveting. Just radiates star power or some other kind of pull, some extra ingredient of a higher magnitude. I understand now why she was such a big movie star though appearing almost exclusively in musicals, and why she was such a successful “live” concert artist. Imagine witnessing her do her thing in person.
Can't stop watching her! My eyes are glue to her just her
I Love Judy Garland's Beautiful Costume, Shoes and Yellow Scarf!
Honestly, I was just watching their feet... my eyes can't see anything but their feet... Lovely...
Judy is the only person who danced with both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly who, when I watch their routines, I can't take my eyes off of HER. Fred and Gene, the two greatest film dancers ever, vanish when she's on screen with them. She wasn't the best technical dancer, but every move is completely her. Judy was a genius, there will never be another like her.
That's fine, but Kelly & Astaire are far better dancers than Garland. I absolutely love Judy but come on...
I've always been a great fan of Judy but Cyd Charisse danced with Astaire and Kelly and became the center
of attention in films made with both of them. You are right - Judy Garland was a fabulous and unique artist.
Of course Fred and Gene are better dancers, they are the kings of screen dancing - that wasn't my point, though.... Judy wasn't a dancer. Ginger, Ann Miller, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron, Vera Ellen, etc., partners to Fred and Gene, and brilliant dancers, miles above Judy. But Judy, non-dancer, pulled the attention and focus on her; she made you watch her, as imperfect as she was.
MaryShelley72 totally agree! Amazing lady, I can't take my eyes of her
The only dancer who could outperform Fred Astaire was Eleanor Powell. Not only was she gorgeous, she could dance with the best, and best them.
That's true talent they both have
Two of my favorites...performing together ❤️
Two legends, Judy was a all around great performer .
Amazing! Judy in "high heels" going toe to toe with Fred Astaire while he is in flats....
I just can't picture Gene Kelly in this movie. I'm glad that Fred Astaire got the roll.
I love this sequence. Judy is just a wonder. Fred is amaze balls. Pure. Joy. Mazel.
Judy was an amazing dancer, especially considering she never trained as one. I forgot which choreographer said that he could show her a routine once and she could could do it perfectly. There was nothing the woman couldn’t do.
I love this classic upbeat musical number! It is pure movie magic!
Astaire's slenderness certainly enhances his gracefulness and elegance.
Every other artist who acted with Fred Astaire commented he was an absolute gentleman to work with. So delightful their tap dance steps.
I have watched this number a zillion times, always find new things to discover about Judy performing. She was one of the most amazing triple threats to have ever live, in any decade. this time I noticed a few times (maybe 3 to 5), when Judy would for a super split instant glance down at Fred's feet just as a double check t make sure they were in sync dance wise. Judy's use of her peripheral, is so slight, and really fast, that unless you really look you do not notice.
Maybe she's just casting her eyes down. By this time they should have been so rehearsed they weren't watching their feet!
My favorite number in this movie
Ha Ha if one looks at a few of the background performers sitting down they have expressions of jealousy on their faces watching the two legends going at it!
Love Judy and Fred: that I'll put a smile on your face.
What talent! I can’t think of anyone today with this kind of talent.
2 of my favorite entertainers in the world
what else ! so perfect , so great , fred and judy.......................................it will be eternal and forever !
So much talent.
The precision is amazing.
What a great number ,wonderfully performed by Judy and Fred. Judy was such an accomplished performer and dances, like a dream. Her outfit here is simply marvellous and should catch on in these days of drab and tattered fashion.
JUDY and FRED danced sang great with each other always have always did !! I loved them Both Judy could sing dance act and had so much humor and yes so much witt which has faded out a lot now a days !
This is back when Hollywood required actors to have talent.
In general I agree with you but, in this case, it's not quite a fair comment because you're watching the two best performers ever. Even in those days there were very few who could come anywhere close.
That's REAL TALENT. Singing the note (not just sidling up close to the note but really singing the note itself). Singing on the beat. Perfect rhythm. And the dancing! WOW! Astaire and Judy. Who today can do what they did? No gimmicks; no salacious wiggling around; no fireworks; no licking wrecking balls; no skimpy clothes; no back-up dancers. Just two performers showing their talent. Never will get better than this. Simply the best
they did have black guys doing the dancing for sound...like really talented guys paid to give up the credit. Astaire didn't stay all night and dance for sound, he couldn't...nobody thinks about that part.
I don't know about other dancers, but Fred Astaire did ALL of his own tap effects. That is confirmed by any number of sources, in fact no one has ever said otherwise. If you hear him tapping, you can be sure it's him you're hearing, no one else. In his films with Ginger Rogers, Hermes Pan usually did her effects, although the "I'll be Hard to Handle" number in Roberta was shot live, so that was Ginger Rogers herself.
And of course they both were lip-syncing to a vocal track that was recorded weeks earlier. Love this number!!
People like you are exhausting. Just enjoy the music without tearing down other people. If you don't like something just shut the fuck up and watch something else. Jesus. No one thinks you are cool or original for hating modern music.
Broadway Classixs You nicely pointed out how these numbers are filmed regarding singing and dancing. It is a fact that should be noted as it helps those who read comments know how these production numbers were created and filmed. There are likely some who still may think that is Audrey Hepburn ‘s singing voice in My Fair Lady instead of the wonderful Marni Nixon. Maybe we should stick our head in the sand and not acknowledge Ms. Nixon. You did not, of course, denigrate the OP by pointing this out.
ABSOLUTE MAGIC!!! David, Crouch End, London, N8
Miss these great great musicals and the dancing........
@Lawrence...They're gone now and always, gems to be remembered only on UA-cam. And speaking of great musicals, one that seems to be overlooked is Michael Kidd's "It's always fair weather." For her performance in it, I thought Jean Hagen's career would soar. Not so. But the musical was Kidd's best, so far as I know.
Superb Judy, an enthusiastic performer with incredible verve. We all love her so much. Her fresh-faced vitality and deft movements keep one engrossed, notwithstanding that Judy was dancing with the greatest partner ever ! Superb figure and dress. How I wish for similar visions to appear on our streets these days.
Adrienne, Judy was a great dancer and hardly imperfect!!! We just think of her as a great singer and actress first but she could hold her own in the dancing dept. Fred even said so!!
@Mark...I've even read that she was known in the dance as a quick study, one take, and she was off and running.
Now, THAT'S entertainment!
I just watched a few ann miller youtube clips before this one. I've always loved this number. When you don't compare Judy Garland to other dancers, she seems like a great dancer, but really it seems to me her flair and charisma are just so overwhelming, no one comes close to her---it makes everything she does just perfect, as if she can't do anything wrong. It's amazing. I think she would have been a big star even if she hadn't been able to sing.
She was at or near her peak here. Absolutely healthy looking and vivacious.
I will be forever sad about the fact that I never could see Judy in person.
Sebastian Brinkmann she died just up the road from me but I never saw her !
Sebastian: I could kick myself for not going to see Judy at the Palace in New York City 1964. My cousin had tickets, but I went to see the Beatles instead. I'm much older now and wish I could have seen her just once.
@@paulsimpson4155,,And just how close were you to Debbie Reynold's home?
In the 1970's I would often see Fred Astaire at or near the Beverly Hills Post office. Fred as I recall always had a smile on his face and wore a sport coat and neck tie. I remember a powder blue sport coat.
I would always say "hi Fred" and Fred would smile back at me and nod. After a few times of this he would say a friendly "hello" Mostly I would see him outside the post office, but one time inside I saw him and I said "dont' worry Fred, I never ask for autographs!" and he laughed at that.
@@pathetictroll7557 Oh, a great story! Mr. Astaire was known to be a very generous autograph signer - he would not have minded if you asked for one. A dear friend of mine (who worked in the entertainment industry and collected many dozens of celebrity autographs) left me an original (numbered) "lobby card," from a scene with Fred and Judy in "Easter Parade." It's signed by both stars and I really treasure it - it's up on my living room wall and I enjoy it every single day. Cheers and thanks for your fun recollection!
Now that’s talent!!!
She was beautiful. My gods.
Judy is the best entertainer ever. Even her dancing is better than anybody else's
Fred Astaire is the Master, period!!!!
such a feel good song :) it has been with me for 23 years now :)
She is mesmerizing
Judy makes it look like a walk in the park.
Judy jkeeps up with Astaire, probably the best dancer in MGM history
She does the steps fine, but she doesn't have a real dances line or style. Loving her make miss any imperfection. I love her, too.
Exquisite and 1000 percentage energy and amazing talent. Thank you for this upload. Stay healthy. ❄🍎🧸🎻👍☕
My two favourite performances of Judy's are Somewhere Over the Rainbow in Wizard of Oz and Get Happy from Summer Stock
Pure joy.
she was known as a singer but she`s dancing with the best of them. he was known as a dancer but he`s singing with the best of them.
She was the hardest working woman in show business!
Wonderful Song!
Wow just wow . . . . 💕
So much enthusiasm 🤩😍
MAMAS FAMILY BOUGHT ME HERE!
Love Judy🙌😭
Fred Astaire and Judy Garland performing together. It's more talent in one picture that can be believed. The Mt. Everests. And Ann Miller to boot. You'd think the people in the background are frozen still in awe. (Well, I was!) I've seen this in other movies, though. I presume they are still to not distract us in any way from Garland and Astaire.
I was in a show where an act that used a fan fluttered the fan fan during the star's bows. You should have heard the star's screams about keeping that "f*cking fan still" as soon as the curtain cams down. That's called upstaging and is not stood for by even the most gentile of performers.
It gets no better.
Also look at Judy in the Portland Fancy number with Kelly and tell me she was imperfect! Every actress she be so imperfect!
Legs absolutely rail track perfect at about 1.05, the move as if on wheels #HNY2016
+wommpomm Compare Judy & ensemble's arm moves in another film, imitating train wheel rolls in "Atcheson, Topeka & the Santa Fe." Along with "The Trolley Song," trains figured in a few of her films. Wonder what she might have done with "Chattanooga Choo Choo."
I love dancing this. After school play time in high school 1992!! I love it!
LOL. I always focused on Judy's feet. Forget Fred Astaire's...too much!
I thought for a second that the people in the background were cardboard cutouts because they did a great job of staying still. It wasn't until I saw one of the guys move that I realized "Ok, they're real"
Fred makes it look so easy.
Lovely musical videoclip !
She can sing, and he can dance.
Química perfeita. Gosto da Judy com Gene Kelly, mas com Fred Astaire ficou excelente também.
When Judy danced with Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, or especially Mickey Rooney. They did not even exist on the stage. In her forties she wasn't the dancer she once was but she did not have to be.
1:15 That's when you get on a bus and it accelerates as you try to walk to a seat.
i love them!!!
That woman could do it all, and better than most!
Way to go Judy. Show them your happy feet.
This reminds me of that classic Mama's Family episode. Listen to the commentary track at 44:09 and you'll know what I'm talking about.
Bravo!!
I am going to get this on dvd
DaVinci and Michaelangelo equally brilliant as entertainers!
wow!
my teenage song :)
Genial como siempre ellos dos
@Jesus...Igual con el gran Caesar Romero y la Chavela Grable tal vez?
My fav
the woman is brillant !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did they DO this?!?!?
Fred is loose here. Looks like he's having fun performing with the great Judy Garland.
And Judy was in heels keeping up with him...
@@jgiza8888 all women dancers do
@@mercuryxyz7222 with regards to heels, usually not that length... dancing shoes are "generally not" with High Heels.... therefore, I think Garland was the superior dancer as she had do the same steps as Fred. Fred is in flats and Judy is bee-boppin with 4 inch heels. Brava Judy!!
@@jgiza8888 all women do. You can’t compare different genders
@@mercuryxyz7222 I am a woman and I dance. Dancing in flats IS FAR easier than in heels. I know.
I've ALWAYS heard of "how great Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair" were.
Pfffffffffttt! 😝
Hows about
"J*U*D*Y G*A*R*L*A*N*D& Fred Astair!"😁
Now I've see "GREAT"
Remember when talent was needed to be famous ps: has made this comment before if someone has sorry i didn't know
Judith Crist wrote that Judy was the only partner if Astaire and Kelly who you watched instead of the two men.
Fred Astaire was famous for doing routines over and over, until they were perfect. With that in mind, I wonder how long those poor extras had to sit in the same spot without moving until they got one they could use.
look at all those other performers sitting there, judging them!
I love Fred, but I can't take my eyes off Judy.
S Robin Dittrich I completely agree. Anytime she was in screen and dancing with a partner I always watched her....she was so very talented!
⭐⭐⭐
With exception of the man in white shirt and tie leaning against the table at 1:25, no one so much as blinks an eye during the entire number. (Ya, the slightest nod of the head from the woman in salmon at 1:36.) You don't upstage Garland and Astaire.
härligt
TACK BARA DU RINGDE SÅ KANSKE JAG TROR PÅ DEJ
TACK DU TYCKER INTE OM MEJ NÄR DU INTE VILL PRATA MED MEJ EN FÖRKLARING KANSKE
You gave the song an incorrect title.
🚂 🚂 🚂 ... 🤣🤣🤣...🙏🏻
Clickbait when i see Judy in the thumbnail
Judy looks heavier in this number;perhaps it’s the unflattering costume.
Judy could learn a dance routine after watching it once. Nobody like her ever. When she dances with someone Kelly or Astaire you only see her.
lyss channel Judy was doing routines like this since she was a child. She was a true vaudevillian.
You have to remember, she had been in show business from the age of three years old look up Francis Ethel, gum the youngest of her sisters before child protection laws prevented them, Hollywood and her mother from taking all the money she made and giving her uppers downers and everything else to control her while they made the best of her usesconsidering all that, it’s no wonder she was a true epitome of the triple threat sing dance act in spite of her childhood compare her to Shirley Temple, who grew up at the same time whose mother was protective of her and her time and what they were trying to feed her her mother Shirley let them to her
