- Today we shall play another creepy Doom WAD called do_not_play.wad, and from that title alone, it must be pretty scary! This WAD takes place in some eerie hallways, and who knows what else we'll find in here?

Great video! It's been a while since I touched this so, I didn't remember half of the things you have shown.
Yes, this was a joke/personal creepy mod to scare a friend. It was made in a couple of hours, probably long before 2014.
The original had few differences which were removed because they weren't working anymore:
- The mod would start without any titlemap and put you straight into the maze. The titlemap would be visible only for a split second.
- Cheats were disabled and activating them would kill you.
- Whenever you died, the game would crash.

The echoing drums would still be present but not for you.
I like how it uses rhythm as a proximity warning. It gives information, but less information than a constant sound that changes pitch or volume, so you only get a rough estimate of where the faceboi is.
I've always liked the use of radar and other proximity-based warning systems as a tool to scare players in horror games, it's the worst and best combination of useful information and useless information. Yeah, sure, it's going crazy, is it behind me, is it around the next corner, is it a couple of rooms away? Who knows, but man am I gonna be tense as hell.
LIDAR tech has gotten a couple new horror games designed after it lately and i'm excited to see where they take that concept, having the radar be your own eyesight and all. Already seen a couple of really good ones with the premise, though they're more psychological horror than standard horror games.

Yeah I agree. I always though the strongest way to build tension in a horror game/movie is to throw a strange or unexplainable element into the mix, because then anything could happen and all bets are off.
It trigger's suspicion because it's a break in the pattern. And we associate that with danger.
It ironically makes darkness your comfort zone, to make you scared of safety

when horror games use that echoey drum sound, i'm always spooked. the original slender game did it and it made it 10x scarier because of it. it's so unsettling to me.
It's way better here because it gets faster the closer the monster is to you.

It's really creepy. Considering that low drum/bass sound is the only audible sound during gameplay, combined with you walking through a pitch black maze, it really does set the mood and have you on the edge of your seat.
the player running throw the maze with the "thump, thump, thump" really builds tension before the actual scare.

It's the difference between terror and horror, a monster is much scarier if you know it's nearby, a buildup of terror is what makes horror work, which is why jumpscares don't have any affect if they're completely random or at a time you expect to be safe.

I must admit, that first scare did make me jump. The lack of music, the short render distance, and the "thumping" sound really do build up tension, and makes the jumpscare with the face a lot more frightening.

So simple yet so terrifyingly effective. Just the sound of that pulse noise speeding up a bit got my heart rate speeding up with it every time! Great mod.
Now, this is what you call a horror game. No music, the deafening silence accompanied by the sound of footsteps that add to the tension and the infinite amount of turns and halls and the entity. I had to pause so many times because I actually have anxiety just looking at this bruh, good wad tho 🤙

There's a creature in Malaysian folklore called a pontianak. It's like a vampire, but creepier. If the cry it makes is loud, then it is distant. If it's only a soft whimper, then it's right next to you.

I have a theroie, the faster the noise gets the closer you are to the AI, when the noise is slowed your far away from it.
Very rarely do I get scared, but that first jumpscare really got me
Imagine if Doomguy's face at one point started to behave differently bit by bit; first simply pausing to stare forward towards the player but in a way you wouldn't pay attention to it right away, only when he does it enough. He starts to look pale, sweating. He looks terrified and you wonder if he can sense the entity closing in. Maybe it's right behind you? You can't bring yourself to look. Then his expression starts to slowly contort to something more and more twisted and then

As his face begins to twist, it becomes almost like his iconic "evil grin" but he also looks incredibly pained, his teeth just a bit too grit, his mouth just too wide
@@kaijupvppy I mostly meant that as a cliched creepy pasta way, thus the "hyper-realistic eyes" but it truly would up the creepy factor of the mod if the status face changed bit by bit, especially as you wouldn't notice it right away as you're concentrating on the entity, a few glances there and there and suddenly you realize he looks just.. wrong.

The Hellrooms Level 1: Lurking Death: a seemingly infinite maze of dirty, burnt down tiles and somehow clean floor, there are some entities that may follow you around and look like humans, however, they at random intervals might hurt you, and there is a big face like entity that is really fast but can only "smell" you. If you find a blue fire orb, touch it to go to another floor of the same level or the next level.

When I first played Doom 3 as a teenager, I had this creeping fear that my game would become demon-possessed for real. During a game, a new and scary enemy I'd never seen before and that wasn't even supposed to be in the game would suddenly appear and obliterate my character out of existence, and that then the screen would say "You're next!" just before my Xbox shut itself off on its own.
I believe this is the closest thing to that happening that I've yet seen.

One time I was playing Wolfenstein the New Order on 360 and it took control of my old VCR-TV combo while I was playing on ultra violence. First my tv kept turning off on its own and I would die, and see the loading screen of black and red SS imagery and quotes from Mein Kampf as I turned it back on. Then every time that happened there were no words, just the images and the VCR would stay STOP in all caps as if I had stopped a VHS tape. I tried it again and this time it wouldn't let me play at all, just red image and STOP, then EJECT. When I got creeped out and took out the game I swear to god I heard quiet screaming like a bunch of tortured ghosts and a feeling of hot static like they were escaping from the disc. I never played again.

you can actually get chased by it in a roblox game called nicos nextbots
Honestly doom getting horror maps is a cool concept,since doom is basically designed to make you feel like you can kill the devil and come back for a rematch,so it’s all the more terrifying when the same game suddenly strips you of all sense of safety and power and leaves you in a dark environment without any of the music to empower you.
can you imagine being in a place like this for real of a on going maze of every wall looking the same, only just a few hours would drive anyone crazy.

It takes a lot to scare me usually, but the feeling of impending doom as the drum gets faster and louder got me good when it showed up

We went from brutally killing demons to run away from one
After playing the first secret mission in ULTRAKILL, I think there's definitely something to be said for adding horror elements to a game with very high movement speed. It makes things very, _very_ scary and stressful when the game itself prevents you from moving cautiously in a confined space.

Great observation. I'm already a wimp myself when it comes to playing horror games - I must confess that the first time I played ULTRAKILL was shortlived because of this very reason. Strays were enough to spook me the first time for a combination of not initially being able to precisely control V2 + high FOV + large monitor. I've since gotten over it but you could not force me to play SOMETHING WICKED. Props to you!

You were much more thorough with this mod than I expected! Very few would put this much effort in. The mod is simple and does leave me wishing for a more complex horror mod. The AI trap laying is interesting, so is leaving the goal. I wish the AI was better or reacted to sprinting or noise, more intricate maps would have been nice too. But still, a good mod!
