Not only is this scary from a horror perspective, but there's also something super claustrophobic about this romhack that I can't describe. Like with every reset Mario is falling deeper into Limbo.
The part at the end where you get chased by M (The Black and White marios name is M Btw) is terrifying, the distant static, only being covered by marios noises is genuinely anxiety enducing, and the fact the map is massive so you dont know where M is coming from is genuinely terrifying, and the end where the textbox said: "everything is better off without you" made my heart sink.
i also love the countdown starting while the player has no idea what they're running from, but they know they have to RUN. that's a special kind of terror.
It’s weird how perfect Bob-Bomb Battlefield’s design is for horror. The long path winding up the mountain builds suspense so perfectly because you can’t see around the corners or to the top
Something to note: The video doesn't tell you outright but each reset takes a bob-omb away from the painting, signifying a countdown of sorts. It looks like each time you play there seems to be a metaphor of you ruining the game itself, not the game ruining itself which gives more insight to the ending
my theory is that the player of the game (in the lore) has some sort of condition/disease that causes their mind to decay, like alzheimer or dementia idk. considering the game is supossed to be "personalized to the liking of the player" since the player is rotting so is the game. The corrupted mario is supossed to represent the disease consuming and killing the player, and everything is better of without us. after all, the game doesnt have to corrupt itself anymore, it doesnt have anyone to personalize itself to.
The words "better off without you" are so powerful. They hit hard no matter the context, even if it's just some mario hack, even if you know that the original game would still accept you.
The origin of melt.exe (cuz I don't know the actual name of it) in FNF Classified. Honestly I like both things, but I don't remember anyone explaining the romhack that showed it. Also, the song is good in my opinion (named Better Off, like Better Off With You)
The "corrupted Mario" is normally supposed to start flying towards you when the timer reaches 0'00. The entity also emits a static sound so as it gets closer to you, the static gets louder and louder. It seems that it got stuck during your playthrough of the rom. "corrupted Mario's" actual name is "M".
This only makes me wish more for an actually "personalized" Mario 64 hack/fan game. Like a randomizer but with a ton of potential changes to give the impression that the game is changing every time it's played. That's likely a gross oversimplification of what would actually need to be done, but the concept would be really cool.
Of someone ever tries to make a personal Mario 64 hack, I think that not only important details would be personalized, but also very subtle details that truly make the game feel different every time
i'd personally go with an attempt at making an efficient ai to theoretically try to generate actual personalization through small changes like coins being moved, or a flying cap, or metal cap, or it going easier or harder based on how the player seems to be doing like how l4d technically is personalized
This hack shows EXACTLY how a horrifying personal version of SM64 for me to be. Seeing the game detoriate and become empty, absolutely no jumpscares and a feeling that you don't belong mixed in with the fear of the unknown in the dark is horrifying for me. They don't want me here, I only ruin everything I want to participate in. It's all my fault. That's what the game says. Especially one I love.
I honestly missed content like this back in 2020. Best of both worlds. Psychological horror, and one of my favorite childhood games. It really caught my interest unlike anything in a while and I was invested until it suddenly silently died down unfortunately. But I do hope this means it makes a small comeback
I don’t know how to explain it but if you remove the glitchy effects , it completely changes the ambience. Because if you add glitchy effects they’d know something is going to happen and know that they would expect a visit from THEM.
I think I remember somewhere reading that the corrupted Mario or "M" is actually a representation of a bug that is "alive", it doesn't have a conscience, it just consumes more and more and more of the game, until nothing is left, and seeing as it uses a Mario model, it could be possible that the game, as a last resort, fixes the problem by bringing the bug to Mario's current location and let it delete Mario, which also deletes the bug, hence the "everything is better of without you" text, you the player are controlling Mario, destroying the world as a consequence of playing the game more and more, the more you play the more the bug consumes, you could have left to stop it from deleting and corrupting things but you didn't, you kept playing, and then it deleted you.
@@yellowpower3755 Things just began disappearing up to and including buildings. It’s a well known glitch where one of the daedric guard enemy types in “The Shivering Isles” uses up like 1000 ID at a time a piece and at around the 200 hour mark this will have caused the object ID counter to “rollover” and it will then overwrite the object IDs of everything in the game eventually
I think everything being back in the end, only the player missing, represents a change in perspective from us to the world. We try to remember the stuff we did in the past, replaying our memories in our minds like we replay the same level over and over again but as time goes on we start missing details. When we are gone, the stuff we did didn't even matter, it's like we weren't even there to begin with. Things may have changed in your mind, but to the world it didn't matter.
@@indeepjable fuck, I didn't notice that not sure if it invalidates my interpretation, was fuck-up of the programmer or they chose to remove it to not having ambience sound competing with the music.
@@indeepjable Yeah, but that doesn't matter much in the interpretation. Especially considering the fact that this game was made to be anti-human, and is supposed to be a lesson. People say this is a horror game, but if you go far enough, you get a reality ✔. There is no jumpscare, just a message saying how the world is better without you.
My first time playing mario 64 on the switch was already kinda unsettling, the emptiness. while also being slightly difficult so you stay in the empty areas, you're alone only with small amounts of enemies in some areas, or toads. EDIT: yeah I'm talking about water levels.
Ah, Super Mario 64. What a strange game. There's something just so..unnerving about the complete loneliness of it. There's just something eerie about how Mario and a few toads are the only people in the area. Not only that, but Peach's castle just feels..empty. It's all so empty and eerie, and I love it.
Since you've tried this "personalized" Rom, I wonder if you'd like to review B3133, a Mario Rom that takes anything from the beta and adds a lot of stars to take, while keeping the creepy and personalized side of the concept.
Repent and follow Jesus! Belief in messiah alone is not enough to grant you salvation - Matthew 7:21-23, John 3:3, John 3:36 (ESV is the best translation for John 3:36) if you believed in Messiah you would be following His commands as best as you could. If you are not a follower of Messiah I would highly recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the Son of God and can predict the future or make it happen, B) The world leaders/nations/governments etc have been conspiring together for the last 3000+ years going back to Babylon and before, C) History as we know it is fake. You don't really need to speculate once you start a relationship with God. Can't get a response from God? Fasting can help increase your perception and prayer can help initiate events. God will ignore you if your prayer does not align with His purpose (James 4:3) or if you are approaching Him when "unclean" (Isaiah 1:15, Isaiah 59:2, Micah 3:4). Stop eating food sacrificed to idols (McDonald's, Wendy's etc) stop glorifying yourself on social media or making other images of yourself (Second Commandment), stop gossiping about other people, stop watching obscene content etc. Have a blessed day!
hey, musician here, thanks so much for playing! it was fun working on this and im glad its gotten this much traction! I only did the timer and ending theme but yeah i hope u enjoyed :)
I mean, your game is indirectly saying people are bad, so ofc people want to see it. I'm not afraid of it, but rather, of those last dialogue words......anyways, good hack
3:45 it wasn’t wind, it was the waterfall bud, it even disappears in the second run compared to the first (replay the side by side comparison and look to the left where the waterfall is) Edit: Just realized this too but the windows on the castle in the second run are gone compared to the first
An interesting thing to note - the entity that attacks Mario is actually just a reskinned homing 1-up. When the homing 1-ups chase down Mario, they have a tendency to get stuck on walls if you get on the other side of one, or in this case, getting to a lower elevation than it will cause it to get 'glued' to the ground, resulting in the entity standing still up until approached and the jump allowing it to be free to chase once more. With efficient movement, it's also possible to reach the top of the mountain with plenty of time left, but nothing changes. You can also outrun the entity with efficient movement, though it won't do you much good. Lastly, if you reset the game after you enter the level but before the entity spawns, nothing will happen and re-entering just puts you back onto the 'leave' segment; if you reset at any point after the entity has spawned, you'll be taken to the end screen. Essentially, there's no winning once the entity appears.
Something else to note: The final variation of the game somehow doesn't crash when using a savestate. I was able to load to the 4th iteration of the game from the "deleted mario" state, but not the others. Also I had 18 seconds remaining when I got to the top.
@@Overseer190 Sounds potentially more like an emulator issue, since I was able to put savestates down wherever and load from them just fine. Having anti-savestate measures in place intentionally would've been a neat touch, though.
3:43 actually, if you look at the waterfall by the castle, the water is completely missing👀 that wasn’t wind, it was the waterfall in the back just gone all together
Honestly given how empty SM64 is, this feels pretty appropriate for the game, even for a hack. That being said, this really uses the concept of dread very well; it didn’t need to rely on jumpscares and that’s what makes it even scarier.
Hey bro, I really appreciate you putting the songs used in the description, I was about to ask for the name of one of them (Blue Forest). I know you won't see this comment, but I just had to thank the effort so few put into this specific thing.
3:26 actually the difference here is that the waterfall is gone, i think that wind sound is actually the sound of the water Oh lol literally every new comment is pointing out the same thing
10:40 the clip of the other person "beating the timer", he didn't even get remotely close to where the flag would normally be to signal the end of the race before the timer hit 0
Man I remember playing this hack back when Unreal made his video on it. The whole chase on the fourth run spooked me good... I wonder what the entity meant when he said it was better this way...?
Love the video, but the glitchy effects really just killed it for me. Any feeling of suspense, dread, or even fear was just completely eliminated with them. Great job other than that
This sent shivers down my spine. The environment feels and sounds so quiet. While this game wasn't designed to do this (or at least im assuming not), games that can manage to scare you without any kind of jumpscare/gore, are simply fantastic. Great video!
2:57 this is an actual crash handler in eu and shindou version, looks like paper mario one, but without MM value, also it displays when glitch catchs you, only on retroarch. Instead of something changed, normally would be there (TLB exception on store)
People may find that removing bits and pieces of a song is creepy, due to losing the familiarity of the song. We all can recognize the main theme and bob-omb battlefield by their melodies, the big bombastic part of the song that is usually the first thing you think of. Without it, we're left with the underlying bass and percussion, which sounds off since we're not used to hearing it that much. The bassline of Bob-Omb Battlefield slaps, though.
this has SO much potential to be an unsettling rom. the idea of the game deteriorating and carving itself down to nothing but the simple quiet geometry of the landscape would have been amazingly unselling if they didnt add the same creepypasta schticks we have been seeing for the past 10 years...
@@TrueChaosLord the "entity" in the game, the objective box saying leave and other stuff like that in this mod are the same stuff we've been seeing for a while now and it's getting very boring
I think the reason why this is so eerie when the game resets is because when you see the message it makes you think something bad happened, and uses "Something" with caps. Something is moving. Someone is here. Now if I used: "Your friend is here", You would be alot less scared.
rom hacks like this are terrifying. i did a short no mic stream of this and it really gives you an uneasy feeling the entire playthrough. i have never felt such genuine dread from a game before and then panic when i heard that something was chasing me. the final text of the game really felt creepy
I've been going down a rabbit hole with this creepypasta. It's kind of interesting. 3:37 Sir that wasn't wind, that was the waterfall disappearing. I think you might have meant water, but maybe you didn't notice the waterfall disappearing?
That’s what this was design for. It’s for players who’s keeps trying to find glitches to cheat on the game without playing the mechanics when developers put countless hours into making the game.
3:40 I believe it is the waterfall that has been missing, since it's noise is more likely than that plus in the ROM hack the waterfall after the "Something changed" scene dissapears somehow. Nice video and indeed, this ROM hack does have that kind of "eerie" feeling everytime something unnotisable is not there.
kinda hated how it said “leave” because its invoking that it’s dangerous when the most dangerous thing is what you do not know, because if you knew it was dangerous, it was something familiar. but mysterious and unknowing is something unfamiliar, and thats what makes it scary

my theory is that the player of the game (in the lore) has some sort of condition/disease that causes their mind to decay, like alzheimer or dementia idk. considering the game is supossed to be "personalized to the liking of the player" since the player is rotting so is the game. The corrupted mario is supossed to represent the disease consuming and killing the player, and everything is better of without us. after all, the game doesnt have to corrupt itself anymore, it doesnt have anyone to personalize itself to.

The "corrupted Mario" is normally supposed to start flying towards you when the timer reaches 0'00. The entity also emits a static sound so as it gets closer to you, the static gets louder and louder. It seems that it got stuck during your playthrough of the rom.

This only makes me wish more for an actually "personalized" Mario 64 hack/fan game. Like a randomizer but with a ton of potential changes to give the impression that the game is changing every time it's played.
That's likely a gross oversimplification of what would actually need to be done, but the concept would be really cool.
@Joey Nitro b3313 is not a randomizer in the least
Of someone ever tries to make a personal Mario 64 hack, I think that not only important details would be personalized, but also very subtle details that truly make the game feel different every time
i'd personally go with an attempt at making an efficient ai to theoretically try to generate actual personalization through small changes
like coins being moved, or a flying cap, or metal cap, or it going easier or harder based on how the player seems to be doing
like how l4d technically is personalized
That's what the warped worlds rom hack was aiming for before it's cancellation

My first time playing mario 64 on the switch was already kinda unsettling, the emptiness. while also being slightly difficult so you stay in the empty areas, you're alone only with small amounts of enemies in some areas, or toads.
EDIT: yeah I'm talking about water levels.
4:33 “And plus why would Mario even need to hide? It’s not like anyone else is out there, right?” That got me good.
