I never thought of this song as being about adultery, instead I always felt it so deeply described the feeling of being in a on-again off-again relationship exactly like the one I was in for 11 years. You know that they are never going to fully commit to you, and maybe its better that way, but you keep letting your eyes be blinded by the fantasy that you could be happy together.
The song is open for several meanings. Maybe, for you, it's better suited this way. As someone commented previously, it can also mean the man being cheated. He knows about his wife's affair and still loves her and wants her... And is willing to forgive her.
Same! I saw her at Lilath Fair in the late 90's & the rendition of this song was everything!! It was the first time she sang it live & then she released it in the early 2000's... It's been my fave since 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Saw Sarah live, August of 2014, in the Austin City Limits intimate venue. There was no lip-syncing. Her voice was as clean, pure, and as perfect as you could ever imagine. I've been to tons of concerts (I'm 62 and of the Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young era), and Sarah's was the very BEST concert I've EVER witnessed, hands down.
+Amelia Reagan Wright I know I'm dating oneself, but I'm nearly as old as you are, and I have a few concerts under my belt as well... I imagine you've seen Jackson Browne... and, since you mention C,S,N, & Y, I would guess that you're a fan of "Teach Your Children"... Haven't yet seen Sarah live yet... I was thinking on waiting until I got to Calgary to do so... = )
Daniel B. Metallo You will be in for an AMAZING concert. Sarah's voice was so clean, pure, and not enhanced. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing, and yes, I've been to the concerts you named.
I loved this song and never thought it would actually be my life right now " sleep has left me alone to carry the weight of unraveling where we went wrong" like the overthinking, ruminations, the limerence, the unhealthy fearful avoidant attachment style, romantic OCD is a special kind of hell
I remember when I was young my dad used to play this album every Saturdays and I only knew 'how stupid could I be'. when he lost the CD I was shatter. Those lines played in my head for 10 and more years, tried searching for the song for so long. God came through today
love and hurt, when one loves more the other has power over you, or so it seems .... Love given purely and freely if not appreciated or ill-treated is still love and a loss for the other.
This a great song, performed beautifully by Ms. McLachlan. The video is like watching a mini movie, so much emotion and strong acting. I have watched this video many times and reminds me we really have no control over our destinies.
Never a more perfect expreession of that situation. For those of us who could have had the comfortable loveless reationship, but lit their lives a blaze for the real passion of their true love, thia song and video is perfect.
In that right now I thought opening up my comfortable loveless relationship would make it okay but a passionate toxic relationship is still toxic and messes you up just as badly emotionally.
This saved me. In ways that were to familiar. The collateral damage is too much but rather wait for the answer believing it will come than hurting those that trusted me with their heart. That commitment is worth the death of a wish. The whispers of love ending.
Sarah has been with me threw the darkest days of my life. Her songs were depicted in those days but because of her music, I pushed through and for that I am a lifelong devoted fan. She is truly amazing and should be recognized as an icon in the music industry.
I just time traveled back to my senior year in high school, listening to this cd over & over again, in my forest green Saturn 😂 Still my fave Sarah McLachlin song... #90's kid
how you are able to reach into my heart and pull out everything i feel, and then put it to words set to the most beautiful music, i will never know, but will be eternally grateful.
Night lift up the shades let in the brilliant light of morning But steady me now for I am weak and starving for mercy Sleep has left me alone to carry the weight of unraveling where we went wrong It's all I can do to hang on, to keep me from falling into old familiar shoes How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see Love has made me a fool set me on fire and watched as I floundered Unable to speak except to cry out and wait for your answer But you come around in your time speaking of fabulous places create An oasis that dries up as soon as you're gone You leave me here burning in this desert without you How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see Everything changes everything falls apart I can't stand to feel myself losing control In the depth of my senses I know How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see
LOL My 1 year old watched that commercial. After it was over, right on cue, after the commercial was over, she started bawling. It was the cutest thing I've seen!! She's 4 now and she adores animals!!
I love this song. Sarah has a beautiful voice, and it's nice to know there are some singers in the new millennium that still sing about emotions out there rather then the bull that people consider hits now adays!
Two things stand out for me: I noticed that this problem is so common that it goes through different time periods and also that the wife, alongside her lover, will only hurt others.
Oh wow the memories... I first saw this video on a DVD (which I got as a freebie when I bought a skirt from some store... Claire's, I think?), and fell in love with it.
Canadian musicians dont receive the accolades nor the exposure many of them should. I say this as a long term fan, not as a Canadian. My earliest recollection of music was my father playing the Guess Who at home. My first concert was The Headpins, whom years later I who played the venue where I worked. Brian Adams, April Wine, Honeymoon Suite, Lee Aaron, Rufus Wainright, to name but a few. Theres a lengthy list of Canadian talent from the The Weeknd, I Can't Feel my Face to Sarah McLachan's cover of Blackbird, which surpasses the original by the Beatles, theres something for everyone.
Oh, Canada! Agreed. Let's add Grimes and Rush and Metric and Leonard Cohen and Feist and deadmau5 and Loreena McKennitt and Neil Young and Carly Rae Jepsen and forgive them for Bieber because nobody's perfect.
My birthday is the same day as Sarah's (1/28). I absolutely adore her work, own almost all of her albums, and went to the last lilith fair tour. It just sucks that I relate SO MUCH to this song right now. I take solace in knowing that I can't feel like this forever, and that our fates will reunite us throughout many more lifetimes to come.
This song carried me for two days when i needed it the most.
I never thought of this song as being about adultery, instead I always felt it so deeply described the feeling of being in a on-again off-again relationship exactly like the one I was in for 11 years. Yes. I absolutely relate to your interpretation.
I don't think it is. This video could be about the 1899 novel "The Awakening" by Sarah Chopin, or the video could be inspired by it.
i love your interpretation of this, also im sorry youve been in a loop for 11 years. your view of this work is powerful
Music is art. I think your interpretation is exactly as it should be. It's meant to be felt and lived in
“Love has made me a fool set me on fire and watched as I floundered”... poetry.
Had a similar story 😮
this is still my favorite song by Sarah
Are you interested in doing a test for the car charger?
Cool mine is in the arms of the angel
Same! I saw her at Lilath Fair in the late 90's & the rendition of this song was everything!! It was the first time she sang it live & then she released it in the early 2000's... It's been my fave since 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

@@ameliareaganwright2758 Yep, she’s real magic
i've seen Sarah a couple times and i agree
I support singers who show their beautiful, genuine voice to the audience instead of using autotune :)
Ikr same absolutely 💯 ♥️👌😃💖
Period piece ✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾
this song could pertain to so many things. just a broken marriage or relationship. doesn't have to involve affairs on either side
ive had this mindset since i stopped barhopping at age 28 people people do change thanks for your understanding world😊
I loved this song and never thought it would actually be my life right now " sleep has left me alone to carry the weight of unraveling where we went wrong" like the overthinking, ruminations, the limerence, the unhealthy fearful avoidant attachment style, romantic OCD is a special kind of hell
2023 check-in! Still an amazing song by Sarah. 💜
2024 lmao Still obsessed with this song.
I love how intense this music video is.
This is by far, my favorite McLachlan video!
Still great in 2024!
I don't know how much longer I can carry the heaviness that my soul is weighted with.
I remember when I was young my dad used to play this album every Saturdays and I only knew 'how stupid could I be'. when he lost the CD I was shatter. Those lines played in my head for 10 and more years, tried searching for the song for so long. God came through today
2:52 I love how in the past, shes more reluctant. In the 60s, shes waiting in the hallway with that hungry look
❤❤
Urgh i just get goosebumps whenever i listen to this.

The most underrated female singer and song writer.
2018 still an awesome song

ONE OF HER BEST SONGS.
One of my all time fav SM videos…that 70s segment…::chefkiss::🌈💕 Weaves the story of how our karmic connections are unbroken over lifetimes. 🌈💕
This saved me. In ways that were to familiar. The collateral damage is too much but rather wait for the answer believing it will come than hurting those that trusted me with their heart. That commitment is worth the death of a wish. The whispers of love ending.
The lyrics explain my life right now “you’re no good for me, but you’re the only one I see” ☹️
I enjoy the overwhelming reality of the both the song and the video.
Yes, I get it, too !!!!
This song should always be listened to with headphones.
Nice...I guess there's always 'something' that we bring with us from past lives..
This video deserved all the awards.
2019 This Song and The Video Are Still 🔥
*Ethereal* is an _understatement_ with her voice. So many years, still so *powerful* ...
Brilliant song, brilliant clip. Loved it then, love it now.
Sarah McLachlan da voice of an angel 😇
of course. .. sarah is an excellent actress.. specially in the kids party.... guauuu
Sarah has been with me threw the darkest days of my life. Her songs were depicted in those days but because of her music, I pushed through and for that I am a lifelong devoted fan. She is truly amazing and should be recognized as an icon in the music industry.
I find myself within the lyrics of this song...more than once...sigh. But it is still one of my most favorite
We have that one person in our lives...
for Ignatius.......
Only God knows why I love this song. I am single and do not have this issue. But I feel it. If only I could love again.
It’s also hard for me to love again. Yes, I am single.
I love how she looks with straight hair!
What a Beautiful Woman! ❤🖤❤
She's Gorgeous with Long, Straight Hair!💜
For me, easily her best song; all of them are great but this one...just incredible. So raw and powerful.
This song is beautiful and also tragedic at the same time. You find the real love, but you have to accept that you cannot be together...
Absolutely amazing. Sarah McLachlan has been one of my favorite singers ever since I was a small child. 💕
She is a goddess.
She was in Quebec city 2 days ago and i was on my feet hearing all of her songs, it was awesome !! :)
Beautiful song, beautiful artist, beautiful woman.
this song kills me
sarah's elizabethan take on things has me pondering in the sessions of sweet silent thought . . .the world at large
I just time traveled back to my senior year in high school, listening to this cd over & over again, in my forest green Saturn 😂
Still my fave Sarah McLachlin song...
#90's kid
One her best!
one of my favorite videos of all time the emotions go hand on hand with this beautiful song.
Ahhhhh got that out of my system...I wish Sarah would come out with some new material
sometimes i feel the pain of being stupid to be stuck in unhealthy love
We need this video in HD, please!!
great music brought me here
Its funny how love can do that to you. Have that power over you. A simple emotion.
This...is everything
how you are able to reach into my heart and pull out everything i feel, and then put it to words set to the most beautiful music, i will never know, but will be eternally grateful.
This is a brilliant song with a powerful video - kudos to Sarah!
Night lift up the shades let in the brilliant light of morning
But steady me now for I am weak and starving for mercy
Sleep has left me alone to carry the weight of unraveling where we went wrong
It's all I can do to hang on, to keep me from falling into old familiar shoes
How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see
Love has made me a fool set me on fire and watched as I floundered
Unable to speak except to cry out and wait for your answer
But you come around in your time speaking of fabulous places create
An oasis that dries up as soon as you're gone
You leave me here burning in this desert without you
How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see
Everything changes everything falls apart
I can't stand to feel myself losing control
In the depth of my senses I know
How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see
How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see
Love this song so much.

LOL My 1 year old watched that commercial. After it was over, right on cue, after the commercial was over, she started bawling. It was the cutest thing I've seen!! She's 4 now and she adores animals!!
One of my favorite videos, so beautiful.
So well directed, too.
Sarah is a poet.
Ugh...this songgggggg!!!
back when there was actually good music... I feel like we took it for granted. =/
and yes few artists are able to solidify emotion like Sarah
I discovered Sarah in 1992 n saw in concert twice. Every song is a masterpiece!!!
Love this music video. Love this artist.
Everything Sarah McLachlan does makes me hope for more.....I love this girl's music/.....!!!
Love the song!My favorite for the last days since I discovered it by buying CLOSER: Greatest Hits of Sarah
Oh wow the memories... I first saw this video on a DVD (which I got as a freebie when I bought a skirt from some store... Claire's, I think?), and fell in love with it.

And Alanis Morisette, too.. Her singing style resembles that of Sarah.
it is by design. too close to america. will drain your energy then laugh
Don't forget Rough Trade.
Such a powerful song. I Love her work!
...whoa.
Haven't had that reaction about a song in a while.
Very good video for the song!!
Sarah is just... a goddess
such a heartmelting video and song
I have only seen Sarah live twice (London and. Glasgow). Above and beyond all other performers.
Not really the type of music I listen to but this song is nice and mellow. Some of her other songs are nice also.
what's the music to listen to
+NickJohnssenItaly I listen to Santana, classic rock, old school, oldies, even some country. The number one music that I enjoy is Christian music.
