I was 18 years old, driving to work a shift at Blockbuster Music when this song hit the radio for the first time. The DJ, as well as most listeners tuning into Station 98.7 in So Cal at the time, was awe struck by the song. So much so he played it twice in a row. That was the first and last time I ever heard a radio station love a song so much to play it back to back.

This song puts me in a sort of weird emotion. Something peaceful and surreal. Like I'm floating in serenity. Anybody else feels like this when they hear this song?
The last song and for first time listening to this that my brother got to enjoy before passing away from diabetes over a year ago. He was only 58 1/2 years old just dying a week after my birthday. Now this song is a constant reminder to me about his life and the time we have now to value and cherish it but also to take good care of ourselves. I will always remember you.
Does it ever bug you out how tiny of a fraction of the population has seen or heard things you hold so dear? I bet less than 500 million have ever seen even E.T. I just can't imagine going through life never hearing Sarah‘s heavenly voice.
I absolutely adore this song. It helps me sleep at night when I can't fall asleep. Her music is incredibly soothing during tough times or when I've lost my way. I was in 7th Grade when this song came out and fell in love with Sarah. I've been a fan ever since and continue to be to this day. Keep making beautiful and wonderful music, Sarah :-)
Props to the producer of this song. So many creative layers and chords. What an incredible canvas for Sarah's voice. This song is still one of my favorites.
One of the most elegant personages of the 1990s happens to be a celebrity singer, and her sincere sophistication shines through every performance. She and Dido are truly one of a kind.
What a beautiful song and I can’t believe I forgot all about it until I happened to come across it today. Where is Sarah McLaughlin these days??? Come back please! Hello from NY & FL 💕💕💕💕
I didn't realize how many layers are in this song when I was 12. 'Who are you, an angel?' repeated 5 times... I didn't even know those were words! ... There is just as much SOUND in the studio version as there is in a good live performance. I love this woman.
This was one of those CDs my mom just happened to have in her collection when I was in junior high. I can remember playing this song, "Building A Mystery" and "Adia" on almost constant rotation when I'd get home from school! My mom would go bonkers trying to find it not knowing I had it.
I remember the first time I heard this song. Driving around Detroit on a cold winter's night - right from those stuttering distorted guitar chords and that voice. It doesn't mean much. I was hooked! Who was this lady? Of course, the rest is history and like a lot of the other commentators it does make me want to cry too. I miss everything about you. Wow.
I haven't heard this in way too long. I always loved it. And now it just gave me goosebumps hearing it again. This is one of the greatest tracks ever. This one is going straight to my hall of fame list.
This is one of the greatest produced songs I can remember. Her vocal is very high in the mix but sounds great. The toggle switch guitar intro is great.
Agreed, this song is a masterpiece... The writing, her singing, the guitar toggling creates so much 'atmosphere' in the mix... The whole song is an awesome piece of work.
Guitars that sound like screen door springs and a moving bass line that captivates! Ethereal vocals that stay with you. Phenomenal song that doesn't get old!
Her lyrics are poetry, beautiful and melancholy. We were lucky, 90s kids. And we were the last ones.

in the book of Proverbs 18:21 (Amplified Bible): "Death and Life Are in the Power of the Tongue, And those who Love it and Indulge it will Eat its Fruit and Bear the Consequences of their Words."
Words and actions hurt us the most when they come from family, friends and even bosses and colleagues from our workplace on a daily basis. Words have the power to heal and harm.
Heavenly Father El Shaddai I ask that You would remove ALL emotional and psychological trauma from Casondra Jent's mind, body and soul in Jesus Name.
I ask that You El Shaddai give Casondra Jent strength and courage to forgive herself. Give her the courage to love herself and the knowledge of knowing that she is truly a great blessing and an amazing woman who has touched the lives of those around her.
Holy Spirit, help Casondra Jent to see herself the way that You do: a precious soul that has everything it takes to be successful and the grace to handle every challenge in front of her in 2024 and beyond.
Holy Spirit, send ministering Angels 😇 😇 to protect her from all harm and danger, both seen and unseen.
Holy Spirit, remove all demonic spirits of doubt, rejection, depression, self-harm, anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, and suicide from Casondra Jent right now in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ.
Almighty GOD, soak and saturate every part of Casondra Jent with Your unconditional Love, unconditional Grace, unconditional understanding, unconditional compassion, unconditional lovingkindness and unconditional Mercy.
Almighty GOD, give Casondra Jent Your
strength, wisdom and discernment to forgive All those inside her family circle ⭕, her circle ⭕ of friendships and workplace colleagues that hurt her immensely by their words and actions towards her in the past and present.
Almighty GOD, heal Casondra Jent's mind, body and soul inside and out with the precious cleansing Blood of Jesus Christ.
Almighty GOD, give Casondra Jent Your
strength, wisdom and discernment to move forward. Draw her closer to Your unconditional love and mercy. Reveal to her just how much she's truly loved by You Almighty GOD in Jesus Name.
Thank You Almighty GOD so much for what You're doing for her now and for the new chapter you're doing in Casondra Jent's life in 2024. And I thank You for what You're doing in the lives of those around us as it unfolds this year. In the mighty Name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Amen.
Quick side note: El Shaddai means Almighty GOD in Hebrew). Just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that.
Only years after this song came out did I realize this was a love song to herself...how she reconciled, loved, accepted, let go of the past.....#SweetSurrender
NYC FoodPhoto Sarah said on VH1's storytellers that the song was influenced by the film ''Leaving Las Vegas and how these 2 pathetic people fell in love despite all of their flaws and all the ugly things that surround their lives (One an alcoholic, the other a prostitute). They were truly accepting of one another in spite of everything. One dies and that is why she says I miss everything about you.
I heard this in a Starbucks in the 90s and had to immediately go out and buy the cd. When it comes to great music I never did have any willpower.
+Keyth Danielsen
I hear ya! The entire cd was great too.
sometimes hard to listen to
Todd Lasky why hard to listen to?
Starbucks in 90s was the best! That was back when coffee was cool! :)
Sparkle_and_fade Coffee was always great. It's the people that made it pretentious that suck.
Takes me to many different periods of my life, with warmth, angst, regret, and hope. ❤
@Dave S. Sarah McLachlan Sweet Surrender is my number one favorite song
This song is so wonderful there are no words!
when music had such meaning! plus chicks rule:)
I know. It speaks to my SOUL!
Meghan Dowd just the title alone is dope
Adele is the only female that we got that's close enough to anyone on that list although i could be wrong
Sometimes it feels like we need the 90s back. But for changing the world? I'm down.
We need the 90's back for sure.
Well mid 2019 another 70 and a half years from now and it'll be the 90s again
Yes, absolutely! I'm all for Gay/lesbian and women's rights and all I mean who isn't? But the Liberals have clearly gone insane!!!🤦♂️
Really? Looks to me like the right-wing and their orange idol are the insane ones.

Beautiful melody, vocals, instrumentation. Never ceases to give me chills.
Same!

It is almost 20 years this song was realeased and I still love it very much. It is a hauntingly beautiful song.
🎶it doesn't mean much
it doesn't mean anything at all
the life I've left behind me
is a cold room
I've crossed the last line
from where I can't return
where every step I took in faith
betrayed me
and led me from my home💔💔
and sweet
sweet surrender
is all that I have to give
you take me in
no questions asked
you strip away the ugliness
that surrounds me
are you an angel
am I already that gone
I only hope
that I won't disappoint you
when I'm down here
on my knees
and sweet
sweet
sweet surrender
is all that I have to give
sweet
sweet
sweet surrender
is all that I have to give
and I don't understand💔💔
by the touch of your hand
I would be the one to fall
I miss the little things
oh I miss everything
About you 💔💔
it doesn't mean much
it doesn't mean anything at all
the life I left behind me
is a cold room💔💔
sweet
sweet
sweet surrender
is all that I have to give🎶🎶🎶🎶

It doesn't mean much.
It doesn't mean anything at all:
When there is no puntuation:
It doesn't mean anything at all without emotion, the song comes alive with This angels voice, and instruments are equal in their heartfeltness. Sarah.
Media Luna I appreciate this, but it's already in the discription you know.
@@rodbender9076 sweeeeet surrender 😉
Media Luna thanks for posting the lyrics it feels blisssss
I found her last year and I'm 45. ❤
47 and I grew up listening to her.
That's wild. I did not like her music in its time (I'm 47) but some of it, like this, I do like now. Same with Alanis.
90s was the best
I was 18 years old, driving to work a shift at Blockbuster Music when this song hit the radio for the first time. The DJ, as well as most listeners tuning into Station 98.7 in So Cal at the time, was awe struck by the song. So much so he played it twice in a row. That was the first and last time I ever heard a radio station love a song so much to play it back to back.
I’m listening to this as my dad is passing away. It takes me back when I was a teenager and my dad was still young and we spent a lot of time together 😔
Your Dad will always be with you, even after he passes from this life.
I'm so sorry ❤
G.D. she is soooo talented. A real Angel of music.
I saw her in London live., so grateful to have seen LIVE mysic.Forget these digital era.. great gigs back then...
The ambiance Sarah creates with her songs is uniquely poignant. This track is truly near the top of my list of all-time favorites. Exceptional.
Super talented. Love her music over the years. This lady has a soul.

Tears of nostalgia. Music like this is life.
Hi Sarah! I just wanted to let you know what a positive influence you've been to my life. You taught me to not be afraid to love music, art, and the beauty of being alive! Everything feels better with you in the world, and I love to sing along to your music since I was young and still do! You deserve all the love in the world for your contributions to tone and musical expertise. Your music saves lives, and it has saved mine many times over. You're music is so special to me Sarah, and always has been, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Few things give you a reprieve from the trials and tribulations of life like Sarah's angelic voice. Thank you Sarah! You are a true light in the darkness.
The purest singing voice I have ever heard.
@Brandon Moore She's amazing.Saw her live and sounded even better.
Her and Allison Krauss :)
no doubt.
That belongs to Karen Carpenter, but she is a close second.
@@johndoran1754 absolutely
Completed underrated! An amazing artist!
WHAT?
The distorted feedback-driven guitar in this song is incredible, and kudos to Sarah for featuring it.
Just saw her in concert last night in San Diego, this was the first song. ❤❤
This could not be more 90's. This was the type of 90's aesthetic that I signed up for!
That "who are you" and the backing vocals on "sweeeeeeeet" are still haunting me the same way since the '90. I just can' t, totally powerless 😢❤😢❤
毎年秋から冬になると聴きたくなる曲です。
This is a song that I want to listen to every fall and winter.
Still a total masterpiece from beginning to end
Does it ever bug you out how tiny of a fraction of the population has seen or heard things you hold so dear? I bet less than 500 million have ever seen even E.T. I just can't imagine going through life never hearing Sarah‘s heavenly voice.
87 years i,ve waited to weep warm tears of awe and gratitude
@@waltermcq2055 Im sorry, I don't understand what you mean
I absolutely adore this song. It helps me sleep at night when I can't fall asleep. Her music is incredibly soothing during tough times or when I've lost my way. I was in 7th Grade when this song came out and fell in love with Sarah. I've been a fan ever since and continue to be to this day. Keep making beautiful and wonderful music, Sarah :-)
Love this album. One of my favorites from the '90s. Takes me back.
great memories
Timeless…listened to this album other day at work. Just as good today as it ever was. ❤
Props to the producer of this song. So many creative layers and chords. What an incredible canvas for Sarah's voice. This song is still one of my favorites.
Those feedback echoes are so fitting. Gives it a very haunting feeling. And that grunge feel is just perfect.
This was all her… she created the whole thing.
@@Dara-wl7hy She had a producer .
Love you, Sarah. This brings back so many memories. My late partner and i saw you at Lilith Fair in San Diego.
As soon as that chorus hit, this was the song that sent me down the Sarah rabbithole in 1997 and finding every album in her back catalog.
The 90s was a whole feeling 🧡
GOD BLESS this woman!!!
Beautiful song
"The life I've left behind me is a cold one..." pure truth in poetry
One of the most elegant personages of the 1990s happens to be a celebrity singer, and her sincere sophistication shines through every performance. She and Dido are truly one of a kind.

What a beautiful song and I can’t believe I forgot all about it until I happened to come across it today. Where is Sarah McLaughlin these days??? Come back please! Hello from NY & FL 💕💕💕💕

I remember this video so vividly and watching it for the first time on VH1. I miss the 90s.
I love the total sound of this track what a real masterpiece
whole album was
Possession is the same.very well done.
Amen, Alex!
I didn't realize how many layers are in this song when I was 12. 'Who are you, an angel?' repeated 5 times... I didn't even know those were words! ... There is just as much SOUND in the studio version as there is in a good live performance. I love this woman.
Sarah's music has saved me so many times, from moments when i was at my worst and darkest depressions.
Her Voice!!!! It has some purity that's indescribable...
@teikay2999 Sarah McLachlan Sweet Surrender is my number one favorite song
Good god, what a voice
This was plastered all over the radio in the late '90s and throughout the 2000s.... it's a great song.
What’s a radio?
We were training at the gym, this song would play several times, every time
Her voice literally brings me to tears
Me too! She’s absolutely beautiful!
I have this, nd I played it so many times . Will play it again
This was one of those CDs my mom just happened to have in her collection when I was in junior high. I can remember playing this song, "Building A Mystery" and "Adia" on almost constant rotation when I'd get home from school! My mom would go bonkers trying to find it not knowing I had it.
That beginning !!! ☝️🦾💥💪💯😊
I've never been able to decide if her voice, or her face is more beautiful ❤️
A real and Talented Artist, Her Music still Sounds so fresh after all these years. Love from Peru
HUGUINI ever chew the coco leaf and listen to her?
Mick Funny I think you mean Coca.
Cocaine !
This was one of my favorite songs from the '90's and that's saying a lot because it was a great decade for popular music.
I hear ya.
for pop music only the 70's even compare to the brilliance that was the 90's.
Wow.
i cant tell you how much i love this song. it's a whole lot though
90's sush an amazing time to become a teen and a young adult
I appreciate this song so much more now that I'm an adult.
She's such a treasure. Thank you for the last 3 decades.
ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS IN MY OPINION. AHEAD OF ITS TIME
Guitars that sound like screen door springs and a moving bass line that captivates! Ethereal vocals that stay with you. Phenomenal song that doesn't get old!
