I struggled trying to get my 15 inch 2011 to work again. It fails every time I do this. Tired two different new SSDs. Got a solid 5 years (2011-2016). It would be a blessing to have it run again.
@Matt Duncan I did. I think my gpu is fried. It turns on and wants to boot the software back on now. But the screen goes blue each time half way through. I found out the apple had replacement program to change the motherboard out for free cause of this issue. Back to the electronic bone yard.

this happened to me. i dont even know how it suddenly upgraded, but before i tried this video i restarted my disk utility, then after watching this video it gave me the new upgraded screen with high sierra
Hi @familygeekery, just curious what a difference does it make if under Disk Utility I'd choose SSD drive, then RESTORE (in top panel) and point to the OS X Base System disk image. Would that then give me a clean, but not the latest Mac OS X?
You don’t need to clone if you don’t want to. You can either save your stuff on Time Machine, or the cloud. I usually install a fresh version of macOS and then restore my saved stuff. But if you do need to clone, you’ll need an external USB sata enclosure.
When I downloaded it and when it came to the loading screen and when it reaches the end of the loading it's just stuck there I don't if it stuck and it's downloading but I need help.
If it stayed stuck, it might be worth rebooting into internet recovery, and using disk utility to reformat the drive and re-install the os. Not the quickest option, but I’ve had to do it a few times over the years.
Thanks man. I will give it a try. Hope can help clarify some items. The MacOS Utilities will install to the original MacOS stock version or the latest version suitable? My MacBook Pro is 13-inch Mid 2012 running MacOS Catalina ver. 10.15.7. Does it mean Utilities will install the same on my new SSD?

Weird. I know there’s some talk about the recovery servers going down. Maybe it just reinstalled Lion from your recovery partition? You could try downloading the image and making a usb boot disk. I have tutorials on that on my channel as well.
If you use cmd+r during startup it will give you the Lion os (which is the one your macbook came with out of the factory), if you use option+cmd+r it will give you the newest macos that your system can run (High Sierra). Are you sure you used option+cmd+r?
