**UPDATE, this may not work for the Mid 2009 model as suggested in the video. This community of people is awesome and thus far the conclusion is that it will not work for mid 2009. Thanks for helping everyone to figure this out! **

This is a step by step process:
What you will need:
1. MacBook 2010, 2011, mid 2012.
2. SATA 3.0 to 2.5 USB cable - this is used to transfer your data from the old hard drive to the new Solid State Drive.
3. Solid State Drive SSD . I recommend the 1TB Samsung EVO 860.
4. MacBook Screw driver set- regular screw drivers will not work, these are special for MacBook. Apple has used less common "Pentalobe" or "Five Point Torx" screws to make access more difficult, but with the correct screwdriver, upgrading the SSD is a straightforward procedure.
5. New RAM - up to 16GB kit

5. Macbook!
What you will need:
For this upgrade, I wanted extra storage and improved memory. For the 2010 to mid 2012 MacBook Pro models, the most ram they can support at this time is 16GB. I purchased a 16GB kit consisting of two 8GB memory card slots. I needed to purchased a screwdriver set specifically for MacBook Pro, as the screws are not standard screws. The SATA USB cable is used to transfer data from the old hard drive to the new solid state drive. I recommend the 1TB Samsung EVO 860. I wanted lots of space and the best performing hard drive for this Macbook.
In total these items cost about $240 with tax.
Step 1. Plug in the charger and turn on your MacBook. You want to be sure that you Mac has enough power during this process, since we will be transferring data.
Step 2 insert the SATA cable into the SSD and plug into your old Mac.
- This SSD works the same way as an external hard drive, it will be ‘internal’ soon, but for now it is ‘external’ or outside of your laptop.
- Plug the USB into your old Mac.
Step 3. Go to the ‘Spotlight Search’ and search for on’ Disk Utility’.
Step 4. Right now this new Samsung SSD can work in either a windows or a Mac computer. We need to format the Samsung SSD to make it work for a Mac computer. The format will be. Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted). - click erase.
Step 5: Shut down the computer, to restart in recovery mode.
Step 6: to initiate recovery mode, hold option + cmd + R + power button. For about 20 seconds.
Step 7 has two options depending on how you would like to transfer data. The first option is to copy the entire old hard drive.
Option 1: once you get to the recovery mode menu- select disk utility. Here we can see the old internal drive ‘ Mac HD’ and the new drive listed under external. Mount each drive again. By clicking on restore. Here I accidentally reamed the new SSD as ‘OS X base system’ - please know to select the new external drive in this process, nothing from the Disk images area. After it is done cloning, it will give you a green checkmark. Shut down the computer and restart it to check to see if the documents have been transferred over.
Option 2: simply format the new Samsung ssd to work with Mac. If you do not care to copy your documents using the disk utility, you can transfer what you need to a usb, and then just format the new Samsung SSD so that it can work with Mac. This option means that there will be no old files on the new computer.
INSTALL HARD DRIVE
Make sure you are working on an anti-static surface.
Use the screwdrivers to open the bottom of computer.
There are three screws, which are longer than the others. Keep them in a safe place and remember which screws below to which holes. Detach the battery connector.
Unscrew the hard drive. Keep the screws in a safe place.
UPGRADE RAM- up to 16GB of ram.

This video among others helped me upgrade my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. I added a 1TB Samsung SSD and 16GB of Ram. One issue I ran into was my Mac was showing error code - 22 whenever I was trying to back up my hard drive to the SSD. If anyone else has this issue I suggest downloading Carbon Copy Cloner and using it to back everything up. I tried copying my hard drive over like 5 times using different methods and I had to wait through the process like 30-40 minutes each time just for them to show the same message. I downloaded CCC and it took about an hour and a half but when it finished everything worked flawlessly. I just used the free trial and it did everything I needed. Figured I'd let you all know because I wish someone would have told me hahaha.
Thank you for the tip def gonna use it
I purchased this recently on Craigslist for $120. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB, added a 1TB SSD & swapped the battery. It works like a charm!!
Can you tell me which battery you used, like specifics, because I hear the replacement battery is hit or miss?
Perfect video for me. slow enough to follow as I know nothing and forget about understanding software. I will try this. Need to watch this video another few times and follow along step by step. More videos please. You're the best I've seen up to date! Thank you so very much.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I was able to revive my old mac book pro and am so happy that I can use it again. Really easy to follow along!
Glad it helped!
Nicely done. Efficient step by step. No wasted speaking. Just the facts. Thanks for this. Getting ready to upgrade a mid 2012 macbook pro. also good to see you are aware of the different screw types.
Exactly! I am glad you are going to do it. It's nice to have things running better.
You are a gifted teacher. Clear, no nonsense, great verbal as well as tremendous video instruction.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! This is exactly what I'm doing now. Bravo!...you shot video really, pacing was perfect & the checklist in description was great. Thank you so much :)
Wow! Great DIY upgrade. I was going to invested on a new MacBook Pro last week but your video changed my decision! Thank you cheers!
speaking about the amount of ports this macbook was the best!
thanks for the video!!!
Thanks!!! I was going to buy a new one but your video helped me bring new life to my old one. Your a life saver.
You are a gifted teacher. Clear, no nonsense, great verbal as well as tremendous video instruction. I’ve been a teacher and instructor of many things over time and you hit two of the main learning styles which makes this super easy to follow and replicate. Thank you for being willing to make videos like this and for sharing them with the world! You Rock!

A comment that made my day. I'm currently considering pursuing teaching in some capacity. Thank you!
You should absolutely do that!! But only if you enjoy it. Work doesn’t suck if you are doing things that you love to do. Someone gave me a crucial piece of advice and I’ll pass it on.
“Instead of trying to get good at what you are bad at, spend your time becoming great at what you are good at”.
Have a great week!
I had ordered everything you listed, hopefully, my MacBook works as it used to a couple of years ago! I will update you with the outcome when I am done :) But for now thanks for the amazing tutorial!
Excellent! It will definately be sharper and more responsive. Also, you will have lots of space to keep photos and zoom recordings :D
I want to do the same with my Mac book pro 2011
Amazing review. 🤩🤩
Want to see more reviews on your upgraded non retina MacBook. Like the changes of performance on battery backup, speed, video editing, multitasking .
Btw, I’m gonna tell my friends to subscribe your channel 🙂
I followed the video and took a couple of tries but was able to upgrade to a Samsung EVO 500GB and 8GB of RAM - laptop is lightning fast now. Great video. Use MAC for more personal stuff but the upgrade is all I need and use a 2 TB external HD as well. Thanks again!
Amazing Bruce, thanks for sharing. Mine is still going strong after 1.5 years now, and it is working comprable to a newer computer.
Very very nice, thank you for preparing a step by step older MacBook Pros Upgrade tutorial and sharing it with us!
Hey :D! I came across your feed from the Yes Theory channel/groups!
This is an awesome video! What I love is that even though I can’t relate to this (I wish I was more tech savvy lol), I still learned a lot and really enjoyed your videos (watched a few hehe)! You have a shining personality and I’m almost sure thats what captivated me! I love how detailed your about section is - good on you for helping the viewer out!
As for a bit on myself (my name is William!), I started making content with the aim of teaching people to break free of societal norms by seeking discomfort & testing their own limits! A few months after starting, my friends told me to check out this channel called Yes Theory as they said my content reminded them of it.. and like you, I’ve been so inspired by the lifestyle they preach!!
Hope you have an awesome day and you are awesome, keep being you! 😁☝🏻
Wow! Yes I enjoy yes theory and wish I could put more of that kind of energy into my videos. The award for best comment ever goes to.....

Great video very informative and easy to do. I have the same computer . I ended up installing a 3tb on my computer. 16gb Thank you so much
I have a 2010 mbp which was my everyday computer until it got slower and slower, until it was unusable. Like you, it started to collect dust and I was about to get rid of it until I decided to see if I could upgrade it.
I watched several videos and got the courage to try the upgrade.
Of all the videos, I could relate with you and your video the most.
I upgraded my harddrive and memory last night and now my computer is like new. Thank you and keep up the great work !
Btw, I ended up watching your chicken videos which was oddly entertaining. :-)
I am now subscribed and hope to see some more diverse content your channel has.
Thank you for your comment. Your kindness has motivated me to edit some videos that I had wanted to published but were half finished. :D I hope you are keeping safe.
Mine is a 2010 mbp and I'm about to do the upgrade. The video has given me enough confidence to do the upgrade.
Thank you! I just bought everything on Amazon. Going to be doing this when I get back home!
Thank you so much love, I'm a IT tech and it is my first time with a mac, thanks for the OS I need the name, my mac book is running Yosemite.

Thank you...your video was my go to video, you did an amazing job!
Amazing review
Just pulled the trigger and updated my 2009 MB Pro 13 that I haven't used since 2014 (always good to have a backup). The computer went from taking 20 seconds to load a single window to being almost immediate once again. Great job with this video! It was completely easy to understand and easy to follow. I watched a lot of them and I thought yours was the best.
What memory did you use? 1300mhz or 1600mhz? Appreciate your response.
Got it on Amazon:

@@ambworth Appreciate the response. I think there is something wrong with my Macbook pro mid 2012.. I'm using 16GB kit (2x8GB). However it still loads like forever. Installed fresh copy of High Sierra.
Thank you Adam! I'm so glad it worked out. Is much better than having in storage. Its old but it has its uses around the house :D
@@ambworth what can it do though
Thanks very much! Just completed the upgrade and the difference is amazing!
Yes. It becomes like a newer computer! That camera though.. :/ haha.
@@IronBubbles haha! Yeah, 2012 laptop cameras are soooo grainy looking
Good video overall straight to the points.
Thank you very much, it worked very well on my macbook pro 2011. I have an other issue, my speakers are crackling badly. Could you do a video on how to fix those please as well? I loved the way you did this tutorial step by step, I could do it without being a computer expert...... Great !!!
Amazing! Thank you so much for posting this! I just did mine- RAM and SSD. It’s like a brand new computer with a terrible battery pack. Woo hoo!
Yes! I'm so glad it is running smoothly! Wahoo!
Thank you! A great tutorial, it's very helpful!
Thank you for your kind words:D
Such a great tutorial!!! Thank you!

Amazing review.
Thanks!
Thanks for the information
Well, I just upgrade my mid 2009 Macbook Pro. That's how good this video is. Thanks for the walkthrough. Easy as pie! :)
This is so good to hear. There are people in the comments saying that this is not possible. Cheers!
there is hope i am going to attempt this on my mid 2009 mac book pro i am pretty nervous
@@3842458 so did I and I came across problem restarting because I completely skip the backup part but got it to boot with an old Installation CD that I’ve kept! 🤞 Good luck
@@3842458 Amazing. Please report back if you could let us know if it worked. This week my main computer failed, and I'm so glad I have this 2010 one as a backup, it's quick and doing very well! If you can't do it, you can still use the parts on another computer, or return them. Best of luck.
@@KayAslin Did you go for a 16GB ram? I want to upgrade my mid 2009 macbook pro from 4gb to 16gb since I do some content creation. I’m just wondering if there’s a limit to upgrading the ram for the 2009 model. Also, how did your upgrade go? Did it work well after the back up?
How funny I’m doing the same thing with the same upgrade parts lol 😂 love it nice video!
What do you think of the computer now?.. My was in my closet for many years.. i'm amazed it works still!
You are PHENOMENAL!! Thank you. Just upgraded my Macbook Pro Early 2011. Oh the difference. I should have done this years ago.
Amazing! I am happy that you have a better machine now! Especially in 2020:D
How long it took to download from internet?
Can you still surf the web and do everything you can do on a new computer?
@@IronBubbles Just curious about what OS you're using on it now?
@@chenzenzo any os works on 2013 and newer, get the newest os available.
Thanks for the great video. What would you suggest I do for my mid 2009 model then?
Thanks
Thanks for a great tutorial, I had went through loads of videos that left me with more questions than answers , this video so straight forward and to the point 🙏
Hi, nice informative video, and well edited. Do you know if the onboard graphics card can be upgraded?
Thank you this was a lot of help
Awesome tutorial video. I followed your instructions step by step and got to the very end which is prettyamazing for a grrenhorn who has never seen the inside belly of a computer. After I tried installing macOS High Sierra It came to a halt with a grey screen and a “do not enter” sign. You know the circle with a diagonal stripe?
What do I do in this case?
Well guess what? After waiting for three days without a response to my comment and posting issue on an Apple support community with several alternative suggestions i finally brought my computer to a professional computer repair shop.. Lo and behold! When i turne my MacBook on to show the technician my problem, it booted properly and my old MacBook is now working perfectly for which i am still grateful to you.
Word of advice to others wanting to do this: be prepared to go the professional way if it doesn’t work for you. The risk is no one in this channel can help you troubleshoot. Be prepared to get help from a professional.
Does it take a day or two or three before everything works as expected following your step by step instructions?
I'm glad you were able to upgrade it. It took the computer I have about 4-6 hours, it had been a long while since it was sitting in my closet, but now we are using it everyday.
Very detailed.. Thumbs up !
Thanks a lot!
Look at all those ports! Wow
There is nothing like a good port!
Nice job!
Gracias por tu video! 💛
Espero que te ayudo!
nicely done - thanks
Many thanks!
This is my favorite video thank you
haha. I love you. Have a great day!
Great video. I just put in a Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB ssd into my mid 2012 Macbook Pro with upgraded memory to 16 gb and followed your video step-by-step.
I looked at about 10 other videos but yours was the most precise and easiest to follow! Now my Macbook Pro is SUPER FAST! Thank you for sharing.🙂
Wow! Good job on the upgrade. Thank you for sharing!
i enjoyed watching your tut because of your cute voice.
keep it up 👍
Thank you very much!
Thx a lot for this tutorial. I would like to install a new operating system and start from beginning.
Which latest one do you think would be compatible with this upgrade? thx
Thanks for making and sharing this helpful video. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010. I used to use Final Cut Pro and it was working fine but now it’s very slow even though I don’t use any heavy software on it. I actually haven’t used it for some time now.
Could you suggest me a software or tool to check the issues please?
I also would like to upgrade it, so could you suggest me what part I can upgrade and what maximum capacity I should get for those parts? Thanks in advance.
It's a great video.
Thank you for the good information.
I'm glad to be your best channel friend.
Have a nice day.
👍👍👍🤙🤙👌💯
Thanks for visiting
This is awesome. Thanks so much. I have a question though. if I just reformat the ssd then install it into my 2012 MacBook Pro, would I have to download Mac OS Sierra ??? Just confused on that step.
Crazy how much ssd and ram prices have gone down in just 2 years since this video
Crucial MX500 1tb (860 evo equivalent) ~$52
Silicon Power 16gb ram ~$20
Data cable ~$9
$81 total. Definitely worth it if you can get a MacBook Pro on eBay for a decent price
Thank you. I have subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!
I got a same one as yours mid 2010, core 2 duo. I remember having some video playback problem. Did you experience any trouble like that? Or any suggestions?
this was great thanks. i got the beeps too and started tp panic
I am glad it worked out for you!
Thanks for your helpful tutorial, love from Kurdistan ❤️
yes this was very easy to understand but I got an older Mac Pro laptop. Can I install what you did to upgrade my older laptop? or how do I find out what will work.
You dumbed it down alot, which i really like, i know ill be able to do this without any problems (except i don't know how yo use mac os 😂) but its nice that you did this step by step, showing everything you need to do.
I would suggest also reapplying the thermal paste on the cpu, as that can also improve temps and most times performance, especially with an older macbook 😁.
Hey @Iron Buddle, that video is fantastic! Are you sure I can upgrade my Macbook-Pro Mid-2009 to use 16Gb RAM?
It only runs on El-Capitan OS and a limit of 4GB of ram..
Good tutorial
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video I’m going to do the same upgrade on my mbp mid 2010 including new battery. Would this be able to run Logic Pro x on Monterey, big sur and Catalina with this upgrade?
You're the best dear
You too :D
Loved your review 😇🤘🏼 Miss?
loved your video!!!!! Is it possible to upgrade mid 2009 macbook in 2021?
Very informative tutorial. I made the SSD upgrade and there is a noticeable difference in performance. Could you confirm that the recommend ram upgrade is compatible with the MBP (mid 2009). The specs on Amazon does not include this model
Did you try 16GB on the 2009? I think it only recognizes up to 8GB.
Thanks so much! After I clone the old hard drive to new ssd drive I would still have to reinstall Mac? Thanks!
When you went into recovery mode, you used internet recovery. Regular recovery (cmd r) would not need wifi exactly.
i did the same thing recently, you should apply new thermal paste or apply thermal pads to cpu/gpu and temps will drop alot ! im down from running at 98c constantly down to around 30-50c, under heavy load its tops around 80c.
Awesome
someone gave an old MacBook! this is useful!
Oh excellent! If you change the parts like in this video- you can get it working decent enough to use as a backup computer for connecting to the TV or doing zoom yoga classes- its useful to have.
muchas gracias, pero que marca de ram me recomiendas?
Did yours take a while after you comnd +R + power to have disk utilities come up?
Thanks sister
Thanks for the video! This will be my second ssd upgrade into my 2009 MacBook Pro, but it’s been a few years... Followed all of your steps but my machine doesn’t like the 8gb of ram installed so I took those out. With the new ssd, I’m not able to get into recovery mode and just get a blinking folder with “?” Any suggestions would be great!
I had same issue. I had my time machine plugged into USB when this happened. Switch off, unplug external drive & try again. Worked for me.
this will work for a mid 2012 MacBook Pro, right? Do I need a casing or transfer enclosure? Just want to make sure it fits in there. Thanks!!
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you
Thank you!
Hey so at this point I have seen enough videos to learn to properly swap the new ram and ssd. However I was thinking of starting with a fresh storage so my process would be like get an external HDD, copy my files, put in new ssd and ram. I'm done with the hardware part but what should I do with starting with a clean slate? I mean how can I be able to install the os again? Should that be backed up on a pen drive? I'm a lil stuck with the software part lol. Also on the other hand I wanted to go a bit more risque and replace the superdrive with the old SATA HDD.. any clue how to do that? This is was nonetheless a great video!

Great 👍
great!!
hi. Great Video but does the ram work with macbook pro mid 2009 because it said 2010
This is so underrated…
i have a 2010 just laying there might upgrade it to see if i can still salvage it
I’ve considered similar upgrade to my MacBook Pro mid 2012. Though I would love an improved speed I am conscious of still not be able update this new and improved Mac to newer versions of Mac OS. Do you know if there is a way to move it forward past the leopard 10.8.5 (12F45)?
The MacOS High Sierra only supports from late 2009, Mid 2010 and 2011..For MacBook Pro 2012, it supports for Catalina as it main MacOS and still running currently on it until 2022.
I have upgraded the only SSD for my MacBook Pro mid 2010 but I am not able to buy 8+8=16 RAM in India.
Is that fine to invest another 100$ to upgrade the RAM for above MacBook Pro after 10 years or continuing with 2+2=4 GB better choice?
Can you also replace the disk. Reader for a SSD DRIVE? would make total sense so you get 2 TB of solid state..
After i transferred all my data from the old hdd to new ssd, is it possible to install the ssd to MacBook with all data that i transferred without erasing it? Or is there any other options to save my old data from my old internal hdd, so i can use it in the future?
