**UPDATE, this may not work for the Mid 2009 model as suggested in the video. This community of people is awesome and thus far the conclusion is that it will not work for mid 2009. Thanks for helping everyone to figure this out! **

    Amazon Wishlist: www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls...
This is a step by step process:
    What you will need:
    1. MacBook 2010, 2011, mid 2012.
    2. SATA 3.0 to 2.5 USB cable - this is used to transfer your data from the old hard drive to the new Solid State Drive.
    3. Solid State Drive SSD . I recommend the 1TB Samsung EVO 860.
    4. MacBook Screw driver set- regular screw drivers will not work, these are special for MacBook. Apple has used less common "Pentalobe" or "Five Point Torx" screws to make access more difficult, but with the correct screwdriver, upgrading the SSD is a straightforward procedure.
    5. New RAM - up to 16GB kit
These items and the amazon links are below:
    1. UGREEN SATA to USB 3.0 Adapter Cable for 3.5/2.5 Inch SSD HDD SATA III Hard Drive Disk Converter Support UASP Compatible with Samsung Seagate WD SanDisk Hitachi Toshiba, with 12V Power Adapter

    2. Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM)
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
    3. A-Tech 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3 1066MHz / 1067MHz PC3-8500 SODIMM RAM for Apple MacBook (13 inch, Mid 2010), MacBook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2010), iMac (27 inch, Late 2009), Mac Mini (Mid 2010)
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
    4. Screwdriver Set for MacBook, Tri-Wing Phillips Pentalobe 5 Pentalobe T5 Pentalobe T6 Screwdrivers Repair Tool Kit for Apple MacBook Mac Retina Pro Air
    www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
    5. Macbook!
    What you will need:
For this upgrade, I wanted extra storage and improved memory. For the 2010 to mid 2012 MacBook Pro models, the most ram they can support at this time is 16GB. I purchased a 16GB kit consisting of two 8GB memory card slots. I needed to purchased a screwdriver set specifically for MacBook Pro, as the screws are not standard screws. The SATA USB cable is used to transfer data from the old hard drive to the new solid state drive. I recommend the 1TB Samsung EVO 860. I wanted lots of space and the best performing hard drive for this Macbook.
In total these items cost about $240 with tax.
Step 1. Plug in the charger and turn on your MacBook. You want to be sure that you Mac has enough power during this process, since we will be transferring data.
Step 2 insert the SATA cable into the SSD and plug into your old Mac.
    - This SSD works the same way as an external hard drive, it will be ‘internal’ soon, but for now it is ‘external’ or outside of your laptop.
    - Plug the USB into your old Mac.
Step 3. Go to the ‘Spotlight Search’ and search for on’ Disk Utility’.
Step 4. Right now this new Samsung SSD can work in either a windows or a Mac computer. We need to format the Samsung SSD to make it work for a Mac computer. The format will be. Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted). - click erase.
Step 5: Shut down the computer, to restart in recovery mode.
Step 6: to initiate recovery mode, hold option + cmd + R + power button. For about 20 seconds.
Step 7 has two options depending on how you would like to transfer data. The first option is to copy the entire old hard drive.
Option 1: once you get to the recovery mode menu- select disk utility. Here we can see the old internal drive ‘ Mac HD’ and the new drive listed under external. Mount each drive again. By clicking on restore. Here I accidentally reamed the new SSD as ‘OS X base system’ - please know to select the new external drive in this process, nothing from the Disk images area. After it is done cloning, it will give you a green checkmark. Shut down the computer and restart it to check to see if the documents have been transferred over.
Option 2: simply format the new Samsung ssd to work with Mac. If you do not care to copy your documents using the disk utility, you can transfer what you need to a usb, and then just format the new Samsung SSD so that it can work with Mac. This option means that there will be no old files on the new computer.
    INSTALL HARD DRIVE
Make sure you are working on an anti-static surface.
Use the screwdrivers to open the bottom of computer.
There are three screws, which are longer than the others. Keep them in a safe place and remember which screws below to which holes. Detach the battery connector.
Unscrew the hard drive. Keep the screws in a safe place.
UPGRADE RAM- up to 16GB of ram.

This video among others helped me upgrade my mid-2012 MacBook Pro. I added a 1TB Samsung SSD and 16GB of Ram. One issue I ran into was my Mac was showing error code - 22 whenever I was trying to back up my hard drive to the SSD. If anyone else has this issue I suggest downloading Carbon Copy Cloner and using it to back everything up. I tried copying my hard drive over like 5 times using different methods and I had to wait through the process like 30-40 minutes each time just for them to show the same message. I downloaded CCC and it took about an hour and a half but when it finished everything worked flawlessly. I just used the free trial and it did everything I needed. Figured I'd let you all know because I wish someone would have told me hahaha.

This is an awesome video! What I love is that even though I can’t relate to this (I wish I was more tech savvy lol), I still learned a lot and really enjoyed your videos (watched a few hehe)! You have a shining personality and I’m almost sure thats what captivated me! I love how detailed your about section is - good on you for helping the viewer out!
As for a bit on myself (my name is William!), I started making content with the aim of teaching people to break free of societal norms by seeking discomfort & testing their own limits! A few months after starting, my friends told me to check out this channel called Yes Theory as they said my content reminded them of it.. and like you, I’ve been so inspired by the lifestyle they preach!!

Well guess what? After waiting for three days without a response to my comment and posting issue on an Apple support community with several alternative suggestions i finally brought my computer to a professional computer repair shop.. Lo and behold! When i turne my MacBook on to show the technician my problem, it booted properly and my old MacBook is now working perfectly for which i am still grateful to you.
Word of advice to others wanting to do this: be prepared to go the professional way if it doesn’t work for you. The risk is no one in this channel can help you troubleshoot. Be prepared to get help from a professional.
Does it take a day or two or three before everything works as expected following your step by step instructions?

Great video. I just put in a Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB ssd into my mid 2012 Macbook Pro with upgraded memory to 16 gb and followed your video step-by-step.
I looked at about 10 other videos but yours was the most precise and easiest to follow! Now my Macbook Pro is SUPER FAST! Thank you for sharing.🙂

Thanks for making and sharing this helpful video. I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010. I used to use Final Cut Pro and it was working fine but now it’s very slow even though I don’t use any heavy software on it. I actually haven’t used it for some time now.
Could you suggest me a software or tool to check the issues please?
I also would like to upgrade it, so could you suggest me what part I can upgrade and what maximum capacity I should get for those parts? Thanks in advance.

This is awesome. Thanks so much. I have a question though. if I just reformat the ssd then install it into my 2012 MacBook Pro, would I have to download Mac OS Sierra ??? Just confused on that step.

Crazy how much ssd and ram prices have gone down in just 2 years since this video
    Crucial MX500 1tb (860 evo equivalent) ~$52
    Silicon Power 16gb ram ~$20
    Data cable ~$9
$81 total. Definitely worth it if you can get a MacBook Pro on eBay for a decent price

You dumbed it down alot, which i really like, i know ill be able to do this without any problems (except i don't know how yo use mac os 😂) but its nice that you did this step by step, showing everything you need to do.
I would suggest also reapplying the thermal paste on the cpu, as that can also improve temps and most times performance, especially with an older macbook 😁.

When you went into recovery mode, you used internet recovery. Regular recovery (cmd r) would not need wifi exactly.

i did the same thing recently, you should apply new thermal paste or apply thermal pads to cpu/gpu and temps will drop alot ! im down from running at 98c constantly down to around 30-50c, under heavy load its tops around 80c.

Thanks for the video! This will be my second ssd upgrade into my 2009 MacBook Pro, but it’s been a few years... Followed all of your steps but my machine doesn’t like the 8gb of ram installed so I took those out. With the new ssd, I’m not able to get into recovery mode and just get a blinking folder with “?” Any suggestions would be great!

Hey so at this point I have seen enough videos to learn to properly swap the new ram and ssd. However I was thinking of starting with a fresh storage so my process would be like get an external HDD, copy my files, put in new ssd and ram. I'm done with the hardware part but what should I do with starting with a clean slate? I mean how can I be able to install the os again? Should that be backed up on a pen drive? I'm a lil stuck with the software part lol. Also on the other hand I wanted to go a bit more risque and replace the superdrive with the old SATA HDD.. any clue how to do that? This is was nonetheless a great video!

I’ve considered similar upgrade to my MacBook Pro mid 2012. Though I would love an improved speed I am conscious of still not be able update this new and improved Mac to newer versions of Mac OS. Do you know if there is a way to move it forward past the leopard 10.8.5 (12F45)?

The MacOS High Sierra only supports from late 2009, Mid 2010 and 2011..For MacBook Pro 2012, it supports for Catalina as it main MacOS and still running currently on it until 2022.

I have upgraded the only SSD for my MacBook Pro mid 2010 but I am not able to buy 8+8=16 RAM in India.
Is that fine to invest another 100$ to upgrade the RAM for above MacBook Pro after 10 years or continuing with 2+2=4 GB better choice?

Can you also replace the disk. Reader for a SSD DRIVE? would make total sense so you get 2 TB of solid state..

After i transferred all my data from the old hdd to new ssd, is it possible to install the ssd to MacBook with all data that i transferred without erasing it? Or is there any other options to save my old data from my old internal hdd, so i can use it in the future?
