  • Kenners Centurions toys are really fantastic looking and on the whole pretty well built. But they do suffer with arms getting broken off. So this video covers a way to re-attach them.

    The people assembling toys on the line back then probably never thought their work would be so appreciated decades later.

    Whenever I watch your "Fix it" videos, before you get to the solution, I try to think of how *I* would fix it and you always come up with something faster, easier and more permanent. Great work.

      Thanks. A lot of thought goes into each fix before I film them as I really want people to be able to re-create what I show. There is no point in doing a fix if it requires specialist equipment of expensive tools that no one else has. So I hope they always will be simple and straightforward so that others can do the same as me. With a bit of practice ;)

    You may have already tried this but maybe placing the figure in the freezer for a few days may help the glue to become brittle? It has been tried with model kits held with polystyrene glue and seems to work on them.

    Ah, the broken arms. I had one of mine snap off when I was a kid and sadly this wasn't around then. Great fix video :)

    This is a fix ive done on figures in the past, most figures are put together in a similar fashion, as long as you can get inside the torso you can do this repair on probably 70% of figures, heads and legs too! Dont you just hate it when it when manufacturers use the correct amount of glue to put a toy together! Unfortunately they didn't they have the foresight of a toy restorer needing to get back in! Toys that are screwed together are a blessing! Great vid Dave!

    Finally got around to trying this fix this week. It seems Max has stronger glue or different plastic as it took me 4 hours to split him, compared with 1 hour for Ace. I found that if you brace them with a craft knife & then insert a stronger kitchen knife, you can 'crack' them without the need for hammers & drills. Patience is the key & thanks to TP for the inspiration once again!

      Just finished the rest of the video, what a killer fix! That'll last forever, just curious, would you ever think about putting some glue or LocTite in with the screw since it is threading itself and after a lot of use the screw could come loose? I'm sure it's really tight against the plastic, wasn't sure if that would help it stay in there. Incredible fix though, these figures look brand new now!

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  7 років тому +1

      You certainly could do that. But they were really tough to screw in anyway as I made the hole slightly too small. So the grip is really good. I doubt they will ever come out.

  • @karlspace5695
    @karlspace5695 6 років тому

    In the future, you could try hot glue to avoid damage. You would basically make a hot glue "plug" that the screw could turn in. Dremel out the arm hole a bit to make a cavity. Cover the screw head with a release agent so the hot glue won't stick to it. I use vaseline. Fill the cavity with hot glue, insert the peg, and let the glue cool. You can then try to pull the peg out, but as the screws aren't rounded, that probably wouldn't work. There'd be extra work to keep the glue contained in the arm hole cavity, perhaps making an epoxy sculpt shell that the glue is fit in, and then the epoxy shell is glued into the body cavity?
    I usually do this when customizing figure's heads to fit on different neck posts, or when I need to fit different pegs into different parts. Just use the hot glue to make reverse mold of the peg you're using inside the body part, and you're set. Just remember to coat the peg in a release agent of some kind!

    I used this method with the screw to repair my vintage TMNT foot soldier and reattached a broken leg and it worked out rather well. 🙂

  • @mickmerr
    @mickmerr 2 роки тому

    Quick tip, get cleaner Dremmel cut edges by keeping plastic wet, start with wetting the plastic and keep it wer as you cut. The edges get ragged because the plastic melts, wet plastic won't melt as easy. So the edge is cleaner

    Some acetone nail polish remover or some hand sanitizer weakens or dissolves glue fairly well.

  • @GreyHulk2156

    Have you ever thought of using a flat metal spudger (iSesamo) instead of a screwdriver? It may do less damage to the figure when forcing them apart. Just curious.

    Kind of unrelated, but Jakks Bone Crunching WWF figures used this method using actual screws all tho quite smaller. the good aspect to this is that you could break the head off (most heads were just rubber, glued onto neck peg) drill the neck hole, crack it open (way easier on the cosmetics) and tighten the limb screws of the limbs if they were jangly.
    Jakks BCA figures are the only toy "fixing" experience I have ha.

    I have a childhood Max Ray in a very similar state to your one. But I just glued the arm back on. Works fine for display.
    However, it's nice to know it can be fixed.

    Methinks a toy-splitting nano-laser needs to be developed. Until then both solutions are excellent. Never saw these figures before - wonder if they were tied to some sort of cartoon...

    If you put the figure in the freezer over night the glue should become brittle and easier to crack open

    While it is a shame that you had to damage those figures a little to fix them, I'd say that the missing arms were a MUCH bigger issue than the small amount of damage you did. You managed to resolve the arm issues nicely. As you no doubt well know the problem with many older action figures is that the glue used to hold the seams together often melts with the plastic to weld the two pieces of plastic together. Because of this, the glue welds are next to impossible to separate without some sort of damage occuring. Some of the responses below from subscribers and fans suggest that you might could have placed the figures in the freezer or in hot water to weaken the glue. While those ideas might indeed work out, you would still run the risk of weakening or damaging the figure's plastic. Plastic tends to vary a lot in action figures. Sometimes different plastics can be brittle. Anyway anything you could have tried would have been risky. I don't think you could have done much better in regards to prying those apart. Those welds seem to be bonded extra tight! I have enough experience at this kind of thing to know that a thicker, sturdy knife blade is needed in order to do forceable action figure seam splitting. Thinner blades (like X-acto knife blades) might mangaged to get inside the seams without creating so much damage, but chances are, those kind of blades are going to snap in half during the process. It's very dangerous scenario. Flying metal blades or slipping blades can be extremely dangerous. I think you should hold your head up proudly, Dave, because the fix you came up with accomplished the overall goal of turning these toys into FUNCTIONING figures again! The fellow who lent these will hopefully be pleased with your efforts A little milliput and repainting should work well for finishing these off.

    You wouldn’t glue the screw into the plastic? I would be worried that enough arm rotations might pop it back off, but I imagine it would take a long time for that to happen anyways

      If you drill the whole just a bit smaller then the screw will be a very firm fit and will not come undone.

      I've not tried. But I do have one in pieces so I know that inside it's similar to most action figure legs. The hard part is splitting them apart.

    • @TheToyBoy1978

      The holes are for various attachments so usually unseen, its probably down to a strength issue on why the holes are so big, the clipping in parts might break i guess. they personally dont bother me!
