You only have to look at Nolan's past films to see he loves raising eyebrows with casting and proving their potential. Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Robin Williams, and now Harry Styles.
Exactly, that's what's so funny about all the confusion around this casting! People were flabbergasted by Heath Ledger's casting at the time, but we all have such short memories apparently.
Don't forget he even cast David Bowie as Nicola Tesla in The Prestige.

I do think Fionn Whitehead is getting overlooked with the Harry Styles talk. Styles does a very good job but its Fionn who was the true backbone of that part of the story. He says so little but he delivers a terrific performance.

While that was a good question about the other actors maybe not getting as much recognition because Harry's there, there's also a flip side to that, in that they are also getting more recognition because Harry is there. Harry brought his fans in, to see a movie not typically garnered towards a fanbase like his. In doing so those people are also seeing the talent of Finn and Jack and everyone else in the cast and quite possibly becoming fans of them as well. Me, I absolutely love Harry Styles, but he wasn't the only reason I watched the film. I absolutely love Cillian Murphy as well and have seen almost everything he's ever been in. In fact I was a huge fan of Cillian even before I was a fan of Harry. Chris Nolan as well. I love his films.
Candace Garrett honestly I think if Harry wasn’t in the film, the film would be no different. He’s just a part of the cast but not the focus.

I'm a fan of Harry, yes. And yes media focuses too much on him. And some girls are definitely going to see dunkirk just because of him.
But I'm proud to say that I was going to watch the movie anyway because I love Christopher Nolan's films AND WW2 films so, with or without Harry I was going to love this movie, for all I care they could've cast someone else as Harry's character and I wouldn't mind, 'cause this is a great movie, felt the same as watching the dark knight

One of the many ways filmmakers cast actors in movies is to approach random strangers on the street if they look the part. Which means non-actors as well. So just because she isn't an actor doesn't mean she won't act.

I think Harry styles was really good in the film (which surprised me) but I don’t think it’s right that he gets talked about more and like is listed first on the cast list when you have amazing actors like mark rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Tom hardy, cillian Murphy
Christopher Nolan did a tremendously job in having Fionn Whitehead, Tom Hardy & Cillian Murphy! All three were Phenomenal in the film. Fionn did such an incredible job. He is the star of Dunkirk! Dunkirk shined because of these three amazing actors!
Who was Fion Whitehead? was he the father character?
No. He was the main soldier. The guy who we start the movie with.

I think I know where Nolan is coming from. I was honoured to witness a Spitfire at full chat overflying the last Leuchars airshow and in my vision was only green hills, sky and the Spitfire and I just thought to myself this scene could be right out of the 1940's, it just stunned me. History can be overwhelming.
He is one of the most underrated and the best directors ever like Paul Thomas Anderson, Spike Jonze and Peter Weir

And it was a good choice because Harry did a fantastic job. True, it would have been clear that it was more a publicity casting if Harry had been horrible in it, but he wasn't. He was the right choice for the job.

where you at the casting or how do you know he didn't do better than others who auditioned for the part? Harry styles is SELLING this Movie for him! every tv show ..talk sow..every interviewer is so focused on Harry that they are using every second of the material they get in the interviews to talk about Dunkirk and Harry..because they know people will watch if Harry is in it. examples..ET, Extra, Inside addition, Etalk, TMZ ..today show and others like the >..(tonight show james Corden) every single night these shows are putting Harry styles name in the information section of the broadcast! I know because i record them all and skim though them and watch what i find interesting and delete the rest.They all are saying Harry Styles new movie..and not one other actor is basically mentioned..so if it wasn't for harry..this movie wouldn't get Half the tv air time promo that its getting. The fact that so many are so surprised that He not only did an amazing job but turned out to be one of the main ppl in the movie (especially for a supporting role!) just shows ppl should never assume anything about Harry styles..lol
