my father (who died in '99) was at Dunkirk - but would NEVER talk about ANYTHING he did in the war - he was in for the duration from the time he was 18 in '38 until he was 25 in '45 - now I will be able to go and see what he went thru....and count my blessings that he made it out to go on fighting....will always love you dad! ♥
Jazzy Babe My grandad died in 1988 he was at Dunkirk then went on to fight in North Africa and my dad said he never spoke about it either and would stop the conversation if it was ever mentioned so like you can't wait to see it must have been so hard to come back to civilian life after fighting your way through Europe and North Africa for 6 years so proud of him and the rest of the men and women of the British army the royal navy and the raf, all gave some, some gave all lest we forget
The same attitudes both my grandfathers had towards the war. My dad's father was in the British army, whilst my mothers was in the Polish resistance. Some of the stories I read about what they went through is beyond horror...
spaceodds 2000 if they are still alive, beg them to tell you and write it down. Those stories are infinitely more exciting than anything we will ever experience.
My grandad was also at Dunkirk and amongst those who would never talk about the horror of that experience. As you would expect and as I can better understand now, the experience affected him very deeply and shaped the rest of his life.
"I'm sorry I interrupted you" = something Jimmy Fallon would NEVER say. This is what makes Stephen so great, he actually respects his guest so he apologizes for interrupting and gives Kenneth the chance to finish his story. Love it
He also narrated "Walking with Dinosaurs," "Walking with Prehistoric Beasts," "Walking with Monsters," "World War I in Colour," and a miniseries called "Great Composers"!
Bruce Wayne Well, thank you for this feedback! I really wanted to go see this movie since I first saw the trailer, and your comment is one of the many positive comments I noticed. Kenneth Brannagh saying that the movie has something really personal about it makes me wonder how I'll react, since one of my great-grandfathers was there at Dunkirk, among the men who got saved. (On a sidenote, it's amusing that they mentioned Agincourt, one of my favourite battles. I'm French, but I really don't care if we lost that one tbh, the King and his lords had it coming with their stupidity, and this battle is an excellent example of what I'd call the British guile.)
I went to see it last night. With all the 3D mega movies out nowadays, this 2D film was the most intense I've seen all year. Well and truly awesome. Not sure if the 8 year olds who were at the cinema enjoyed it as much. Maybe they were disappointed by how little Harry Styles was actually in it.
Colbert has people that do the majority of researching the source material the producers want used on any particular episode as well as people who write his "jokes". Most work he does is rehearcing pre show and spewing his Russia conspiracy ultra liberal hollyweird agenda
Shirley Bertrand There's a lot of times where he legitimately knows the subject matter of what his guests are talking about. If you want to pin it solely on the people he has that do the research then that should be an easy fix for interviewers like Fallon who probably has the worst interviewing skills I've ever seen. Just watch at 5:19
You can tell Stephen is really excited about this movie, not just because the show needs to promote it but because he cares about what happened and Dunkirk means something to him. Every comment is passionate and earnest, he's constantly leaning it, and he seems to already have knowledge of the history. He's so into it, he's not even cracking jokes!
You're a sad little man. You would have been first in the queue to keep 'Murica isolationist in WWII - which is why so many Brits didn't feel that unhappy when Pearl Harbour happened - you.
Kenneth Branagh is a national treasure. Two intelligent men having a conversation on late night, this is why I have transitioned to watching this show instead of the other two ( who are both fine by the way) it's just at the end of the day I want a little smarts with a side of laughs.
"So, by the end you like you're there with them". Yes, thats true, i've never experienced a film in theater so immersive, tense, gripping, and emotionally moving without being sentimental or saccharine like Dunkirk
+Blissful Sorrow The only war movie I have seen that compares is "Saving Private Ryan". Ryan was more of a metaphor of course, but both immersed the viewer in the very real and often flawed, often heroic characters going through experiences that cannot ever be fully understood other than by those who experience war first hand, but probably conveyed as well as possible on film.

Ken Brannagh's Hamlet is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Go and spend the 4 hours and see the film. It will change you. It was he who got me hooked on Shakespeare. Brannagh has been a hero of mine since High School.
Such a captivating, true story of courage, sacrifice, hope, loss, commitment, and despair. The truly beautiful aspect of the tale of Dunkirk is the fact that a country was able to stand for it's military and freedom when the government and the world would not.
I've always liked Kenneth Branagh. He's a great actor/director and seems really like-able and down to earth. I think one of the first movie's I ever watched of his was Dead Again, where he starred with his former wife, Emma Thompson. His roles in the several Shakespeare adaptations were also fantastic. Dunkirk was an absolutely fascinating movie. I wish him all the best.
I was an Air Force brat, and spent 4 years in England, not too far from Dover. The movie was very well done. It's an older movie, but a good follow up to Dunkirk, is the Battle Of Britain. Just a recommendation from a serious history buff.
Kenneth Branagh's new movie "Belfast" was the reason I watched this old clip again. He is such a great story teller. It's fascinating to listen to him talking about anything.
My Papa (Dad's dad) was on that beach and was in one of the last battalions rescued. Thanks to all the little boat and those brave, brave civilian sailors.
Is this the greatest promo-interview ever? Branagh seems truly and genuinely enthusiastic about the movie and the story. Watched the movie several times, want to see it again now! :)
Kenneth's Hamlet is a masterpiece of filmmaking and a pretty overlooked movie. Will always respect him for creating such a faithful adaption of Shakespeare.
Jackson Gondo the best part was when Colbert wasn't trying to pretend to be a comedian and just shut up or didn't spew his liberal Russia conspiracy theoties for 5 minutes
Shirley Bertrand agree 100%. I was skeptical and I kept waiting for him to ask Brannagh for a political opinion or something, and not my relief when all he did was interview the man. Is the Stephen we love coming back? Hope so
When I was a teenager Kenneth Branagh was an old man I saw on the tv occasionally. I'm now in my late 40s and he looks younger than I do :-) He is great in Dunkirk and the film itself is an absolute masterpiece. When we left the cinema my friends hands were shaking from the sound of the battle :-)
My father, John Pat RAF 1938-1945, had several stories of his experiences being evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk. I would have loved to watched this movie with him unfortunately he went to our lord a few months prior to release of the movie. Your sons love and miss you.
I like to see how Kenneth Branagh is enthusiastic about this particular piece of war history, a very typical, humble Englishman he is. I haven't seen this movie yet, but if they film it as what it is, it will be an epic movie.
MingWLee sorry they did not film the battle of dunkirk but they filmed the experience of anglosaxon soldiers at the battle of dunkirk. This film is not realy an historically accurate film
Mart That would be a fair assumption if you hadn't seen this video but a good part of it is Kenneth Branagh talking of his Irish background and how he changed his accent.
An amazing film, but also an amazing story of courage and sacrifice. Believe it or not, one of the little boats that participated in the evacuation was captained by none other than Charles Lightoller, the most senior officer to survive the sinking of the Titanic. His boat, the Sundowner, which was built to carry 21 people, saved 127 servicemen during the evacuation. Oscar winner Mark Rylance played a composite character that was inspired by Lightoller.
I am Canadian, we were all inculcated with the history of WWII and I. Because Canadians were in both from the start until the end. Dunkirk spirit was the great weapon that finished the Nazis. The British farmers fed not only the British, but fed the rest of Europe after the war. Never underestimate the power of an island of pissed off civilians. My first exposure to Shakespeare was Olivier's film of Hamlet on black and white tv. I couldn't have been more than ten at the time. I was mogadored. Thunderstruck. Shakespeare could never be dead words on a page after that. Shakespeare has ever been a primal scream for me.
clark cimmerian The food was rationed because a good chunk of what was produced on British soil was sent out to Europe. The war had killed or displaced too many people, and left a lot of farmland littered with ordinance. Please pay attention to what actually happened.
clark cimmerian You're an idiot. Americans should be thankful they had a massive landmass and an ocean between them and Germany (not to mention they didn't join the war until they were pulled kicking and screaming into it). While Britain was fighting for its very survival they rationed food, not because they're "socialist".
I watched a video of Kenneth Branaugh talking on a chat show about his film 'Belfast' recently, and noticed that he turned frequently to the audience while responding, as he does throughout this interview. I really like that about him. I have no idea how many people were in the audience for either event, but I liked that he feels those people are important.
My late father is a Dunkirk veteran. With the British army (artillery) he had to demolish his gun to stop it falling into the hands of the Germans. I still have the breech pin.
When he comments on being brought up the Dunkirk Spirit it is true. I was born in 1969 in Britain and thankfully have never had to experience war. But in our childhood it was drummed into us that you never give up. Never lose hope. Always keep fighting or trying whatever happens.
Kenneth Branagh is one of the most intelligent, versatile and entertaining actors/directors I have ever known. There really are not enough actors/directors in today's industry that compare to him.
Jeffrey I think that world history classes (at least at the high school level) in the US are less concerned with battles than they are with a more macro view of the war. And I remember that the period of 1938-1941 tended to focus on for instance why the war started in Europe, and some of the early stages. But they were more concerned with the oppression and genocide that occurred in Nazi Germany, than say the flow of battles in the war. Obviously, major events, such as the attack on Pearl Harbor, which brought America into active involvement in the war were covered, but for instance I never knew that the Guadalcanal campaign took place over several years. As I recall, it was barely mentioned except as being part of America's island hopping strategy.
True In high school we focused on the realism vs idealism ideologies that affected the ww1 and ww2. This talked more about why war starts and what conditions need to happen for it to start.
Jeffrey same in my country (Georgia) we learned more about soviet union battles and our country involvement than US battles in school, so yea i think its same in other countries.
I love the "St. Crispin's Day" speech from Branagh's HENRY THE FIFTH so much. One of the best, if not the best, motivational speech scenes in movie history IMO
I have to say, I find Stephen Colbert to be one of the most pleasantest American talk show hosts I have come across in many years. He was an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to.
S. I. V. And this type of behaviour is why Nolan gets so criticized. He's a great filmmaker with a clueless fan base who acts like he's the greatest of all time.
I was reared in Belfast not very far from Branagh. Me and my pals often went through his neighbourhood on our way to the public swimming baths and we played and trained with our football team at The Grove football pitches. I believe his older brother was in the same year as me in secondary school. In fact his uncle was a science teacher there. So well done Sir Kenneth you’ve done very well for yourself. “ You’re a Quare Lad”.
I love how respectful, knowledgable & entertaining Stephen Colbert is on this. Full out talking about Dunkirk, educating the audience & adding Agincourt into it. Just hats off to a legend!
Kenneth I love how proud of our country you are and not afraid to say in front of so many Americans that we really did change the world and help protect them. Never give up, never surrender 🇬🇧❤️
I have said it once and I will say it again. Kenneth is an amazing conversationalist. when he talks words just flow. he hardly goes err, emmm, uhhhh or say "like". I just love watching Kenneth talk and watching his interviews are a delight.
Fantastic....seeing the little boats coming over is the most intense feeling in the World! My Dad was a boy during the War, yet from across the Atlantic in here in the States, the story was legendary to him.
Just seen film today and what a stunning achievement Chris Nolan has made for the veteran of the evacuation it is an amazing production with a perfect cast. Please everyone lets all shout out towards the Monarchy and vote Chris Nolan for an MBE the man deserved it. I understand other people out there deserve recognition awards and let them have it but give Chris Nolan some award for having the courage to do this film in our age of CGI and Comic book heroes. I salute you Chris and are brave heroes
Francisco Casillas - yeah Henry Five - Branagh is on here because Stephen made Cillian Murphy clam up with his begora hokary - he was trying for laughs, Cillian thought he was taking the p1ss
Colbert has speech writers and people that research the majority of his source material. Most of the work cuckbert does is rehearcel pre show. Trully unfunny and overrated ultra liberal "comedian"
Screw you, read the history and learn by the university of Hollywood which usually gets the fundamental facts wrong. There were also French Colonial troops too that were evacuated out of Dunkirk. The civilian fleet although very brave and proactive were not vital to the evac but the Royal Navy took the brunt in rescuing the troops.
the BEF is the more important "assets" so it's not surprised that most of the BEF were evacuated. whereas the French troops being rescued are an afterthought. no matter this fact doesn't take away the epic scale of the movie.
Remembering the son of Henllan post office who came back to the village to cheers in the very uniform covered in oil and dirt and in ragsd from Dunkirk and to my Great Uncle Hector who was on one of the Doctors on the hospital ship who was such a brave man. We were a community the other side of the UK in Wales but felt this event like so many in Great Britain. Feel proud.
Saw the film tonight and Kenneth is absolutely right. You feel like you're right there with the soldiers. Some sequences are so intense you forget to breathe. And I never once found myself thinking about what was coming...we were all completely engaged in the film and we jumped out of our seats more than we do watching some horror films! Chris Nolan is a GENIUS.
A lovely and respectful interview. The miracle of Dunkirk was of course a true miracle, but a historical battle going on just about same period of time must be mentioned as well. It was the WW2 first war between Finland and russia. The miracle was that we were able to remain sovereign, which is a victory. I think that Finland and Britain learned their lessons during those desperate days of fight: Never give up.
Saw this the other day it was the most incredibly moving stunningly made film. Kenneth Branagh and the cast were brilliant. Reminded us of what our parents and grandparents lived through and fought for.
Is there anything more fulfilling than two intelligent, articulate people having a conversation?
Bodhisattva Sen Roy and it had nothing to do with you know who

Well, really good sex is high on the list too :-)
Bodhisattva Sen Roy cumming inside a beautiful woman.

That ups my respect for him.
I would listen to Kenneth Branagh talking about Dunkirk or the war or just anything for hours.
Grim Reaper Same dude! Same... His voice is just heavenly.
The man has no lips-- like a politician or used car salesman.
Watch Branagh (playing a British Major/Colonel?? in Iraq) addressing his troops. Brilliant..
Well you can listen to him talking about the cold war for hours! He narrates a documentary series called "The Cold War"
He also narrated "Walking with Dinosaurs," "Walking with Prehistoric Beasts," "Walking with Monsters," "World War I in Colour," and a miniseries called "Great Composers"!
Literally just stepped out of the theater; the film was awesome, in the original sense of the word.
Bruce Wayne Well, thank you for this feedback! I really wanted to go see this movie since I first saw the trailer, and your comment is one of the many positive comments I noticed. @Razelluxe
How can you say that after we have been treated to the cinematic tour de force that is Sharknado 3D?
Bruce Wayne Would you recommend Dunkirk for teenage boys?
I absolutely adore Kenneth! Such a wonderful actor!
A bit unrelated, but I liked his choice of suit in this appearance.
My great uncle took 2 boats to Dunkirk. He never mentioned it. We found out after he died. Dunkirk Spirit will never die.
🙏👍
🙏🏻🇬🇧
This is what makes Colbert so good; he always comes across well informed and is smart enough to really engage with the guests
That's his redeeming quality as a host
Nickychopz lol no he sounds like he was briefed earlier that day
Nope. Fallon's fake laughs and giggles are far more educated. lol
Colbert has people that do the majority of researching the source material the producers want used on any particular episode as well as people who write his "jokes". Most work he does is rehearcing pre show and spewing his Russia conspiracy ultra liberal hollyweird agenda

he is a 5 time oscar nominee

You're a sad little man. You would have been first in the queue to keep 'Murica isolationist in WWII - which is why so many Brits didn't feel that unhappy when Pearl Harbour happened - you.
Colbert is miles above any other talk show. The guy gets the most interesting guests, does his research, and has actual intelligent conversations
Colbert is swooning over Branagh here. It's adorable.
You can tell when Colbert puts it on; here he doesn't. It's genuine.
You can tell he actually respects him quite a bit.
Can't blame him. He is adorable
Star Trek Theory Hey ho someone has emotional problems. Maybe you should talk to a therapist, unless that is too gay ofc.
kinda how he swooned over Hitlery and went on a hissy fit when the more capable candidate won instead
What a delightful man. Didn't expect that.
He's joy on stage as well. Very funny, fantastic actor and director.
Kenneth Branagh is a national treasure. Two intelligent men having a conversation on late night, this is why I have transitioned to watching this show instead of the other two ( who are both fine by the way) it's just at the end of the day I want a little smarts with a side of laughs.
That interview not only make me want to see the movie, but it was also one of the best interviews I have seen in a long time. So intelligent.
Kenneth Branagh is such an engaging story teller. I could listen to him all day.
"So, by the end you like you're there with them". Yes, thats true, i've never experienced a film in theater so immersive, tense, gripping, and emotionally moving without being sentimental or saccharine like Dunkirk

The only war movie I have seen that compares is "Saving Private Ryan". Ryan was more of a metaphor of course, but both immersed the viewer in the very real and often flawed, often heroic characters going through experiences that cannot ever be fully understood other than by those who experience war first hand, but probably conveyed as well as possible on film.
Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge.
Although Private Ryan existed in a parallel universe where only US soldiers were fighting on the Allied side.

Kenneth Branagh is an extraordinary actor and general human specimen. Utterly & completely amazing.
I'm in tears. Reminds me of why I'm proud of my country and home.
Ken Brannagh's Hamlet is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Go and spend the 4 hours and see the film. It will change you. It was he who got me hooked on Shakespeare. Brannagh has been a hero of mine since High School.
Saw Hamlet four times in the theater and then watched it on Video 7 times. He was absolutely AMAZING in front of the camera and behind it.
My God, Kenneth speaks so beautifully and articulately. Brilliant communicator.
Saving Private Ryan :- went to save one man
Dunkirk :- went to save 360,000
derwyn owen should stick that on the poster
More like Dunkirk: Went to save 30,000-45,000 came back with 360,000.
Private Ryan saved more than one man and helped the war and a little sooner if it were real but it wasn't.
And if Ike was in charge of the Allied Forces shouldn't he have tried to save Private Dancer just to keep Tina happy ?
@Robert Bonneau 😂😂.. shut up !
Such a captivating, true story of courage, sacrifice, hope, loss, commitment, and despair.
The truly beautiful aspect of the tale of Dunkirk is the fact that a country was able to stand for it's military and freedom when the government and the world would not.

Dunkirk was an absolutely fascinating movie. I wish him all the best.
51st Highland Division fought on . A few got off from St.Valery in June.
Kenneth is the best director of Shakespeare I have ever come across. He is gifted.
Runaway Lady Loved his version of Hamlet
Much Ado About Nothing is my favourite..., and Othello was so good too
Runaway Lady what about the guy who directed the plays when Shakespeare was alive?
Nobody mentions that movie enough. Denzel Washington, Emma Thompson, Michael Keaton... it was so hilarious.
Denzel and Keanu in black leather pants is pretty unforgettable too.
This is what interviewing should be.
I was an Air Force brat, and spent 4 years in England, not too far from Dover. The movie was very well done. It's an older movie, but a good follow up to Dunkirk, is the Battle Of Britain. Just a recommendation from a serious history buff.

Kenneth Branagh is a full stop Legend! I read the autobiography he wrote when he was about 30! Amazing man, hence the knighthood!
I wasn't expecting watching a whole clip about Kenneth Branagh, but the interview was just so good and soothing
Kenneth is brilliant!
Great film. Much respect to all the British civilians and Army who were involved.
Henry 5 was good but the following sequels, especially Henry 8, were even better. Looking forward to Henry: Origins
Kevtb87 Henry:Generations
The first sequel, 2 Henry 2 Furious is still my favourite I think.
Come on now, Henry 3 was a return to form.
Henry 8 was also known as Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer... Of Wives
+Michael Evans no your thinking of Henry 8, F8 of the franchise...
Kenneth's Hamlet is a masterpiece of filmmaking and a pretty overlooked movie. Will always respect him for creating such a faithful adaption of Shakespeare.

When he comments on being brought up the Dunkirk Spirit it is true. I was born in 1969 in Britain and thankfully have never had to experience war. But in our childhood it was drummed into us that you never give up. Never lose hope. Always keep fighting or trying whatever happens.
Kenneth Branagh is just a total gentleman
What a wonderfully articulate and engaging man. Top bloke.
Kenneth Branagh is one of the most intelligent, versatile and entertaining actors/directors I have ever known. There really are not enough actors/directors in today's industry that compare to him.
A story about WW2 and Americans don't know about it, because it didn't involve Americans. American history education is really not where it should be.
Where I am from most of the history I was taught about ww2 was about my country during ww2. Perhaps it is the same in the US
Jeffrey I think that world history classes (at least at the high school level) in the US are less concerned with battles than they are with a more macro view of the war.
Jeffrey same in my country (Georgia) we learned more about soviet union battles and our country involvement than US battles in school, so yea i think its same in other countries.
so they didn't teach why the wars started? that's interesting.
This is what you call a talented yet down-to-earth, kind and approachable artist
I love watching two smart, talented men having a chat...looking forward to the movie too.
I love the "St. Crispin's Day" speech from Branagh's HENRY THE FIFTH so much. One of the best, if not the best, motivational speech scenes in movie history IMO
littlebrit2007 ...Henry five! Richard three! Two Corinthians!
I have to say, I find Stephen Colbert to be one of the most pleasantest American talk show hosts I have come across in many years. He was an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to.
One of my fav actors/directors... Cant wait to see him play Hercule Poirot in "Murder on the Orient Express" !!!
he's like a straight eddie izzard
Eddie Izzard is straight.
@S. I. V.: Is Nolan playing Hercule Poirot in "Murder on the Orient Express?" Try to stay with us here.
S. I. V. God, stop fanboying will you? Don't tell other people that someone should be their favorite director.
Gosh, he's a charmer.
Fantastic interview -- great questions, active listening, and letting Kenneth speak. Thank you, Stephen!
What a lovely gentleman.
I have said it once and I will say it again. Kenneth is an amazing conversationalist. when he talks words just flow. he hardly goes err, emmm, uhhhh or say "like". I just love watching Kenneth talk and watching his interviews are a delight.
Love Kenneth Branagh ever since Henry V. Seeing Dunkirk tomorrow.
Kenneth is a master of acting and a mastermind of directing. Hats off Sir.
I love how he can suddenly leave his standard English accent and fall right back into his native Belfast accent.
This was a very entertaining interview.
look at this video ! it shows you what really happened in dunkirk !! not the british propaganda !!

Rom's sorry, I don’t want a virus
kenneth does such a good job of expressing himself and explaining things.
Love that hes passionate about this... Articulate man. I appreciate him talking positively about America as well.
What a well spoken and interesting gentleman Kenneth is and what a humble and nice host Stephen is!
I actually I cried at the end when the spitfire aircraft had to crash land on the beach when I saw it in the movies 😭♥️
That was a true event. The plane has only recently been excavated. The pilot escaped from capture and eventually got back to England.
Fantastic....seeing the little boats coming over is the most intense feeling in the World! My Dad was a boy during the War, yet from across the Atlantic in here in the States, the story was legendary to him.
What a stimulating interview! My senses are absolutely delighted 😁
Stephen is so well-versed.
Yeah. Scarmucci's probably a lot smarter.
Feel proud.
What a charming man
Saw the film tonight and Kenneth is absolutely right. You feel like you're right there with the soldiers. Some sequences are so intense you forget to breathe. And I never once found myself thinking about what was coming...we were all completely engaged in the film and we jumped out of our seats more than we do watching some horror films! Chris Nolan is a GENIUS.
Great actor. As an historian of WW2,
Americans need to learn more about the history of this world. You will find it quite fascinating.
Like all truly gifted people, Branagh is incredibly modest - makes him all the more admirable.
just watched it, dunkirk was absolutely brilliant
I believe the very first 'seriously intended' book I ever read. The British have been great since I was a kid. I'm 65 yrs now.
Kenneth is amazing
Just saw it, and wow! The honour, spirit, and bravery of those men choked me up. A wonderful film
Kenneth talking about Chris Nolan's movies describes how I feel when I watch his films. Feel and react like the characters
That might have been one the best interviews in that small slot of time.
Hi from 2018. I just needed to hear smart people talking to each other again. I forgot what it sounded like.
Branagh is a hell of an actor, a hell of a director, a hell of a salesman. Basically, a hell of an artist.
Saw this the other day it was the most incredibly moving stunningly made film. Kenneth Branagh and the cast were brilliant. Reminded us of what our parents and grandparents lived through and fought for.
