  • Coyote mustangs owners lately have had many choices for cold air intakes and the IAT debate is still happening. I try to shine some light on it without having someone in the industry call my boss and get me fired.

    Alex, I have an '18 and was looking at the driver's side grill where the intake gets it's air. It is a very small opening. I haven't seen anyone do anything with the stock grill and opening. Either open it up or port that area for lack of a better term. You showed a race setup up feeding from under the car. I taped the top of my CAI and pulled my hoodliner. I am also trying to modify the hood vents, especially the driver's side to help draw cold air in from that vent..the temps are to high.my work brought them down a few 6-8 degrees..I know a lot of people buy aftermarket grills that may be a solution. Figuring out how to get more air from the outside to the inside is my goal.. good analysis on covered CAI..I agree on that. For fun I put a blue ice block on top of the cone filter and it worked for about 10 minutes. Lol

    When I got my 97 Cobra, the previous owner installed a C&L short ram. The car ran strong, but on warm days (70-80°F) the car's performance would be noticeably worse. So one night I plugged in my snan tool and monitored the iat, and what i saw shocked me. 120+ i was seeing on average. So i drove my ass straight to home depot, grabbed myself 4 inch pvc and two 45° elbows and fabbed up a fenderwell intake with extensions to the lower grill. Iat are within +/-2 degrees of ambient still, and 2-3 lower than ambient when moving. Massive difference.

    Makes sense to me. I installed a Roush CAI on my 2004 Mustang GT that went inside the fender well.

  • @AdministratorX21
    @AdministratorX21 5 років тому

    Yeah Roush made a 180 on their units for the 18s and lidded them. I put their 2016 model unit on my 16 GT. It was an open element. Not only noticed high IATs but when it sat in a rain storm the filter saturated from location of hood heat extractor. Nothing like leaving work and sputtering on interstate 55 getting the dreaded wrench icon on the “infotainment” screen. Ended up having to replace the Mass Air Sensor over it. Tried cleaning it but had loss of torque in high RPM range. That info may help some of you guys out who noticed a dramatic loss of power above 4K RPM... good stuff Alejandro.

  • @Churchill302
    @Churchill302 5 років тому

    My fox came with a "short ram" intake but I moved to a fender-fed CAI. Not just for the IATs, but the turbulent engine bay air (from the radiator fan and the alternator's internal fan) was throwing weird readings at the MAF. One more thing to consider.

      @@a.wheeler7731 Are you saying Ford (and GM and Dodge) left horsepower on the table because they didn't make the air filter big enough to supply the stock engine with the air it needs?
      As for my vehicle, it has an intake system designed by a company that spends over $6 Billion in R&D every year.
      Last, the filter says it is good for 100,000 miles. Chicken wire is also good for 100,000 miles, beside it also doesn't trap dirt. I want a filter that gets clogged with dirt instead of passing it into the engine.

      jrockmk8 I’ll bet condensation was a factor. Plus the scfm of air processed, a coyote engine is over 1000 at WOT and your average 2 Ton home air conditioner is rated for 800. Pretty wild how much air your engine is actually processing.

    I have been saying the aftermarket CAI power numbers are false forever because of the hood open being tested vs the stock which doesn't matter if the hood is open or not. In fact on my 2013 I never did get a CAI mainly because none of them at the time had a closed box design.

With my PMAS CAI I see 8-10 over ambient warmed up on the hwy even in summer, but I’ve also done some baffling and opened up areas advantageous to cooler flow. But when it was installed “as is” the temps shot up pretty quick. Not sure why the aftermarket hasn’t done what I did. Maybe expense?

  • @El_5Zero

    EXACTLY! I said it over and over and no one believed me lol. The stock design is great for street driven cars, the only better CAI option I see out there is the stock GT350 CAI with the GT350 snorkel. Been running it for 3 years and AIT are not an issue, I'm guessing because its designed to work well with the hood. All of the other aftermarket CAI are really cheap in fit and finish. Sure they flow well with the hood open like Alex mentioned, but in real world driving they just don't perform well.

I put a GT350 cold air intake on because it got rid of the silly sound tube and no more mufflers on the intake tube,now when I put my foot into it I hear the intake as well as the pipes.I can say this my car revs easier and winds up quicker with the GT350 intake,I'm going by seat of the pants,not dyno numbers.My car will never be on a dyno,Its a street car.The way the car runs now I would never put the stock air box back on except to trade in the car.Having said that,I got lucky and bought an intake from a wreck for 100 bucks,replaced the air cleaner and went with it.Would I pay 350 for a new one ?Perhaps not.

Lots of flow but it's a (mostly) closed box that uses the stock intake-inlet. Common sense for people that know how air intakes actually work, engine bay air is going to be warmer than the stock air box's inlet air, but you definitely need to explain it to ... well, a lot of these people. lol

    Need to make sure of 2 things..
    1. The cold air intake intakes from a place of cold air.
    2. The intake is hear shielded.. exhaust wrap from eBay works well and is cheap..
    I have a rear mount turbo car. My iats dropped from 125 degrees (90 outside temp FLORIDA CAR
    ) to 10 above ambient temperature from wrapping the engine bay intake pipe...
    Looking at my stock tune, timing started to get pulled at 110 degrees....
    My buddy has a trailblazer ss with an ls2 and an expensive intake, closed box etc.. he had 150 degree iats at idle....
    Bottom line, just wrap your shit up.

    In Honda world, inside bay filter are called Short ram intake and outside called cold air intake. Don't understand why you call a intake with the filter near the engine an cold air intake.

      lflcoast That’s how you sell products to the Murcia muscle crowds, I would say without a tune almost all so called “cold air” perform worse than stock air box.

      When u go to buy these products that’s the name ‘JLT Cold Air Intake’ ‘C&L Cold Air Intake’ etc. it’s simple

    • @erne75
      @erne75 5 років тому +5

      Correct. None of those new intakes for the Mustang are CAIs. The old SN95s had plenty of intakes that relocated the filter out of the engine bay and into the fender well. Those were real CAIs as at least there was an attempt to pickup air from a colder area. I didnt buy into the hype. I'm still running the stock box with K&N drop in filter.

      I had a Honda and tried a short ram intake. Performed far less than simply using the stock box and replacing the resonator with a pipe angled into the fender well.

    • @linkinparkdrift
      @linkinparkdrift 5 років тому

      That's not a Honda thing. A cold air intake doesn't have to be "outside" the engine bay. If manufactures could do that, I'm sure they would. Except anything that isn't a 4 cylinder lacks the room to route a tube and a filter down the fender well or front bumper. This is why 80% of CAIs on non 4 bangers have their intakes on top of the fenderwell, with a wall and rubber gaskets that separate the inlet from the rest of the engine. The air still comes from the fender; outside. Obviously, there are some exceptions like G37s and 335is, but I digress.

    i can you run a intake pipe from air mass sensor to front grille and put the filter inside the grille , thank you

    Roush makes the best CAI. That along with the big Ford Racing fan helps temps. OTOH all of the Mustangs have radiators that are too small.

    N/A problems. On my turbo car, my intercooler is so damn big I can suck air from the firey pits of hell and the intercooler will take it down to ambient temp or close to it.

    The Bullitt version has an open cold air intake. Can't say it ever gets hot enough in the UK for it to be a problem ❄⛄

  • @ericwhitmore8026
    @ericwhitmore8026 5 років тому +1

    IATs really only matter when you're moving and have air flowing in through the grill. Otherwise you're seeing the effect of heatsoak when sitting at a light at idle. Once you move the temps will drop. I'm in South FL and last time I monitored the IAT in my 2017 GT with a K&N Intake I was 3-5 deg above ambient. It was 85F and I was seeing IAT numbers around 88-91F, up to 115-120F at a light. Before you say it most intakes get the same performance numbers when tested because the throttle body can only let in so much at a time but that doesn't matter for this discussion. The temps you see won't go down because of a CAI, as mentioned they may go up but what you are gaining is the air flowing more freely to the throttle body with fewer restrictions plus a better sound.

    Ford has already done the r n d regarding air flow, don't waste your money on a CAI.

  • @derekthegreat1114
    @derekthegreat1114 4 роки тому

    But then again, so are regular dyno tests. They also are done with the hood up and if it has an open air filter then much more air is getting in with out all the engine bay heat. Just saying...

    The factory box is better may not look pretty but does it job. Instead of a sound tube have an ac line to the intake close box, i'll bet it will be denser and the O2 amount will be better. can you tune a stock mustang :) no CAI . can I get atune that will put me in 9 sec pass LOL
