I am so glad you made this video! I installed a S&B CAI on my 21 Silverado 6.2. It made it about 4 tenths slower and lost 3 mph trap speed according to my Race Box. It specifically lost huge performance off the line. I knew it was the relocation of the MAF sensor. I called S&B tech and they told me I must have a bad sensor. Well I put it back to stock and it ran perfectly again. All the performance right back! So that is another one you can test but I'm sure it's the same problem. Thanks Gale for your knowledge!
That's because you put it in their crooked. If you did it right you would have been 4/10 faster and gained 3 mph trap speed. That thing has to be in there just right, at a certain angle...

I thought that was the one bridge too far. If the customer wants something that’s kinda useless but they get to feel like they have a nice custom setup… fine, it’s stupid but he’ll sell it to you. Gale disagrees and that’s fine. “What if they want fentanyl” is just … the logic doesn’t track and it comes off overly dramatic.
@@padrescout over dramatic? Yes. However the fact remains that "the customer is always right in matters of taste." Which in this instance effectively means Gale isn't going to sell you something if it doesn't provide a demonstrable benefit. Which to me is proof of ethics.
Gale Banks is an utter legend. Straight talking, no bs and 100% able to stand behind his products and their effectiveness/durability. Would 100% buy them if they did anything for the shitboxes I knock about in.
As a 38 + year Harley mechanic I appreciate your honesty. I have to deal with the forward facing “cone” type air filter crowd. They actually cost power on a dyno. Plus you are using the intake as a funnel in the rain (some of us actually ride in inclement weather). I normally get the “ram air” argument from the crowd that believes every hp gain advertisers claim for every part in the catalogue. No, you cannot throw a bunch of parts at an engine and expect 100% increases in power…
If you got the money you sure can buy a bunch of parts for 100% increase. BUT! you must know what you’re getting into and what you want. Nothing is impossible when it comes to a vehicle.
Well, we don't expect Harley riders to have study Fluid Mechanics. Actually, we shouldn't expect them to even understand high school level stuff...or basic reading skills 🙈🙉🙊😂 Just kidding!
Bike mechanic and builder here.....know exactly what you mean! Had a lot of customers come in with their (expensive) wishlist comprising form over function. Ok, I cut my profits, but i’d recommend a combination that was cheaper, gave better results, and still was everyday drivable. Less money for me, but they always left happy, and I could sleep at night...
@@fredsmith4106 putting customers ahead of short profits is smart in this time of the highly informed consumer, and most people will eventually figure it out , or be told what's up.
I remember growing up getting my first car and putting in a CAI, it was a jetta, what I realized after I installed it is that it "sounded" cooler, but I felt zero performance impact, and saw mileage decrease. So I ended up getting rid of the baffles that were in the original airbox, that was pulling air from the fender, and that gave me a noticeable power increase and didn't see mileage decrease. Ever since then, I've never done a "CAI" ever again, I've always gotten a great K&N filter, and gotten rid of all the baffling and made sure the stock intake was as clear as possible.
Gale with your years of experience it’s funny to see what angers you make you shake your head at stupidity, and of course hat genuinely make you laugh! Your the real deal, keep on keeping on!
Mr. Banks, love your work with diesels and H2O injection. I have been running it on my semi's for about 12 years now, and WITHOUT exception it has turned EVERY ONE of the into absolute power monster. So much that my lowly, stock gutless c13 out pulled a 600 hp c15 out of L.A. Both trucks were loaded to 80,000#s, 5 big mountain passes, out pulled him on every one. EGT,s are so much better, way less heat into the water jacket, I love this stuff, won't run my truck without it. I am currently running a big c15, dyno to the wheels w/o H2O was 625 H/P. I turned the engine down, smaller cam, lower H/P, I was afraid something was going to get broken. 6% grades, 80,000#s, 50 to 55 MPH, and could accelerate up to that speed on grade from a stop in about a mile. You owner operators should really invest in this. It's like magic. Thank you.
Mr. Banks probably the most honest man in the automotive industry. His video on the rear differential cover should be required watching for any truck owner.
I’ll use banks inter coolers or intake manifolds. Had a lot of bad experiences on other products. They have some product I absolutely love and others not so much just like every brand
Thank you greatly for producing this video in response to…one of many “disgraceful” (to put it lightly) companies, groups, people, pushing such wasteful and irresponsible, flawed, likely hazardous, products to sell to the public. Again, great thanks to the Banks team for all your hard earned work, effort, care and support.
Since this style of air intake hit the market, I asked everyone on car message boards "WHERE DOES THE 'COLD' AIR COME FROM?" I got all kinds of Dunning-Kruger answers to that. Also, replacing plastic ducts with aluminum ducts, heating the intake air, was something else I pointed out. I shake my head every time I see a "cold air intake" sucking hot engine compartment air in a car. I am SO GLAD to see Gale comment on this. I didn't know he had a channel. I subbed immediately.
Many CAI designs pull air through the fenderwell and/or the front near the grill, which would certainly be cooler than an open system described in this video.
I have been the mechanic on my freinds Top/Fuel -Blown Alcohol/ And Bonneville Gas Lakster for years. And you Gail Banks are one of the Best and Brightest Engineers on Engines I have ever seen!!!
I haven't watched Gale's videos in a while but he proved in a series that big deep rear end "caps" are not lubricating the pinion. There's nothing internally in those big caps to force the lube to lube the pinion. Something that was never investigated until Gale did. Good stuff! 👍
This is why I like Gale, upfront and dropping the facts, zero care for your feelings. The customer isn’t always right, sometimes they just need educated, if they’re unwilling to listen to the facts, that’s their problems and there’s plenty of others that will listen. Chasing the dollar over selling a premium product is an absolutely piss poor business model. Personally though, I opt for a cucumber instead of the sock trick.
Gale tells it like it is and his reactions are priceless. 🤣🤣 I have the Banks Ram air in my 7.3 Excursion and what he’s saying is true. I’ve learned so much and have been able to help my truck run better, but also educate my customers 👍🏻
Yes it did. I was previously running the open air 6637 filter and while it gave the engine all the air it wanted or needed, it was still sucking in hot engine air. The Banks Ram air draws from both the fender and the front of the truck, so it’s always getting the cooler air from outside the engine bay. I see little to no black smoke which means the fuel is burning better. Quite a few things were keeping my 7.3 from running its best, I got it all fixed but when I got this intake, it was the cherry on top of it all. 👍🏻
I loved your fentan awl comment!!!I really laughed out loud and I'm watching this by myself. You're an amazingly awesome dude Mr Banks! I've used your products before, and they were way ahead of any "competing products". Glad someone is pushing back against these “hot air intakes”. When I was young and dumb I fell for K&N’s marketing of their oiled filters and open intake systems. Man they sucked, and not in a good way. I’m disappointed to see S&B marketing this style after them touting the closed system. (which I own on my 3.5 Ecoboost) Some people will never learn
100% Fact check once again, maybe they will learn someday! Please keep them coming Gale! Few more weeks before I get my "BANKS" 2022 Duramax Dually exhaust system!!!
Noted this before on the Roush CAI on a Mustang Coyote. You get this HUGE tube, but without a new tune/calibration of the MAF, (or with what Banks does with the control module for the MAF)... you get nothing out of it. It also has an insert to be used when retaining the stock tune. Pretty nice you came up with a control module to correct that, be nicer if you made one for the Mustang with the Coyote!
This made my day! Thank you for telling the truth about the BS advertised by these companies trying to get a buck. Have called out a company before about their scam and they tried dismissing it🤨
I appreciate the roasting, but Banks also sells a couple of products that kinda feel similar. Their F-150 exhaust for example is listed as 3" claiming power, response, lower temp and more mpg but appears to just tie into the factory intermediate piping which is 2.75" (and stock flares out to 3" anyway at the muffler).
You are correct but only sort of. You are going to have a restriction somewhere but when you add on a higher flowing exhaust it will lower temps and give you better power. Response and more MPG won't really happen though, only slightly. Example of this is my 5" on my duramax, my exhaust temps are way down even though I am still attached to the factory 3" downpipe. So what gives? You now have more flow from the downpipe onward allowing the hot air gasses to escape quicker rather than having a 3" restriction all the way out the back. Hope that helps your understanding.
@@shakenfake if the factory system didn’t also expand to 3” at the factory muffler I’d say you have a point potentially. Sounds like your system removes a restriction at wherever the downpipe meets the exhaust but this particular product does not remove any restriction. I suppose the Banks system gives you about 12-18” additional in terms of 3” piping but probably cheaper just to get a 3” intermediate pie for $100 bucks which does the same thing.
@@ALMX5DP But then you are reducing that pipe into a 2.75" muffler inlet 😊 but yes on a gasser it is way different anyway. It is gimmicky that an exhaust can help MPG and power etc (It is possible in some applications that yes it will but 99% of vehicles this is not the case) It will however reduce EGTs Banks exhaust is not overpriced considering it is a whole system. It is about on par.
@@shakenfake the Banks system would be fine if it was a complete 3” system from the y-pipe flange back but it’s not. The factory muffler is 2.75” at the inlet but people have expanded it to 3” and the rest of the muffler is 3” so technically a full 3” intermediate pipe from the flange would technically flow better than this Banks unit. That combined with the claims makes it really no better than the person he is roasting here.
Gale is the best and has been for a long time. No BS. As much as I love cars and trucks, I wish I worked there. Hats off to Banks Power. Well done sir!
Thats why I didn't buy a $300-600 HAI (Hot air intake) option for my Dakota, they all just shoved an opened air filter with a "heat shield" toward the hole in the inner fender/wheel well from where the stock box drew from. I just bought a $65 drop in K&N.. I'll put the rest of the money I saved from not buying those HAIs and get a set of headers.
Based on my experience, you are correct. I have photo results of a brand new KN passing dirty oil into the mass air and intake duct, etc. For what, 2% at 6000 rpm?
@@I_know_what_im_talking_about no I threw away a filter that cost $20 every time I changed it. Besides if I wanted a REAL filter I’d buy a HEPA filter. But alas no one makes one for automotive intakes. Plus the route it takes via the stock air box the fram filters I’ve ran in it for 18 years had barely a 1/4 teaspoon of sand at the bottom waffle valley of the stock air box after years of living and driving on a sand/dusty roads.
@@hotrodray6802 so which one stops pollen? That stuff gets everywhere and is sticky by nature. By that notion you’d need a medical quality filter but they only make those for cabin filters not engine intakes. There’s no way to stop all things without sacrificing flow. Plus your sensors with newer cars will cry and complain if it’s not the correct filter anyways. So why aren’t you running the stock one then? Especially in a 2012+ model. I just didn’t fall for the $300 kits they sell that increase flow via less restriction and a open air cone without the sock. Even more so with mine being old enough to not have the pissy sensors to regulate airflow. I’m air density not MAF
It's clearly designed so that if you go with a tuner that rescales the maf or deletes it you can remove the insert and get the whole flow from the larger tube....
I read Hugh Maciness' book 'Turbochargers' in the early '80's and it changed my perceptions of producing big power. Banks engines featured in the book and I think even on the cover, big multi-turbo marine engines for hydroplanes. I'm Australian but it's good to see a family company, even across the oceans, sticking with what they know. Some of your gear featured on Rainman Ray's channel too - obviously built to purpose. Keep it up.
The intake insert is so you can run this intake on a stock tune. If you reflash the ECU with upgraded maf data from the new tube you should be able to remove the insert and pick up some good power. Banks provides a maf manipulator which skews your maf data. I personally would rather have my maf reporting actual data to the ECU vs. relying on his signal modifier.
I was going to buy a S&B closed box cold air intake for my 3rd gen 5.9, but right when you started talking about the physics of airflow I scratched that plan and now will be going with Banks. Thanks Gale!

I remember being surprised how much more power my Saturn S series had when first started on a cold day. Somebody mentioned air temp; this was before I knew a lot. Eventually I put a hole in the hood and screwed a blazer filter housing on top of the hood. PVC intake with a foam gasket against the hood.
While I never messed with the air intake, upgrading the ignition made a gain of almost 10 mpg on my 02 SC2. The service manager at the dealer even admitted the ignition system was designed to be weak.
The customer is always right. My dad was a mechanic. I once asked him what he did when a customer came in and insisted that he fix something particular to repair their car. He said that he fixed what they told him then he fixed what was actually wrong with the car. If a customer insists on something and you don’t give them what they want, they will go elsewhere and get it anyway
Looks like S&B hired the GM engineers that designed the LLY turbo intake duct that went from 3" tube from air filter housing to 1.5" restriction and 90 bend.
Agreed, but I did buy the s&b intake kit for my LLY with a 3 inch elbow into the turbo. Before I could barely tow my 30ft toy hauler up hill while it was empty. Now I can do 60 up hill fully loaded with it. And it's running cooler and no longer kicking the clutch fan on every 20 mins.

Across many different engines and brands, I see a LOT of aftermarket companies say their induction pipes flow X more cfm. It really seems that $&B is going for that 'show and no go' crowd that wants an intake for it's mass and sound. This same crowd I've seen NEVER clean/re-oil those exposed filters and look super nasty in short order. I guess it's in your name, Banks POWER that you design products that actually do something (and in this case, POWER lol). Great video.
Excellent deconstruction of a competitor's claims. You called it correctly that his product was all about profits with no thought for the customer. Actually really like S&B products and their filters and the fact that they actually bench test their filters for flow and filtration, because most companies don't test filtration. But I must agree that this does look absolutely ridiculous
I visited Banks while the Dakota was being built and had the opportunity to meet the man. Gale struck me as someone who doesn't pull punches and calls out stupid when seen. It pleases me to no end he hasn't changed.
Remove the restriction and recalibrate the maf sensor to accommodate the extra airflow. "Airflow vs frequency" under Engine>Airflow in the ECM. It'll require that you disable certain functions and log your fuel trims, but if you setup your pids correctly you'll acquire correct data to update the maf curve according to RPM. Of course before that you should update the VE table, but the maf calibration is essentially what is needed to get it to work without that restriction in the charge tube. Still...hot air is no good. Ideally, a closed box or fresh air inlet from the grill is better. Then there's bestest: interchiller/ice box. Banks is good stuff though. Legitimately made my father in law's disel truck much better.
Absolutely made my day, the only thing more hilarious than saying that their product is bull shit was the sock reference. I laughed my ass off at that. May you live to a very active & healthy 200!
I don’t think this intake is much worse than your DPF back exhaust systems. A nice, free flowing exhaust after the DPF gains no power, sound or reductions in exhaust temperatures. Looks are the only reason. Shouldn’t you be the “authority” and tell your customers it is a waist of money?
I believe an important part of marketing is educating customers, and steering them away from gimmicks. I remember first reading of Gale Banks' setups in the book, Turbochargers, by Hugh MacInnes.
You're making fun of another companies Intake, yet you have a faulty design in yours that you don't even have a fix for yet, after months and months of a known issue. I went to take a sip of my beer when Gale said "What if the customer wants fentanyl?" Its a miracle I didnt spit beer across the room because I immediately started laughing uncontrollably. I love it!
Caught me off quard so hard aswel!!
I also was dying laughing
Give em the fent then.
Gale Banks is an utter legend. Straight talking, no bs and 100% able to stand behind his products and their effectiveness/durability. Would 100% buy them if they did anything for the shitboxes I knock about in.

You and me both
The passion of this one man is so immense, I wish more people could be like him
As a 38 + year Harley mechanic I appreciate your honesty.
I beg to differ.

As an OEM air intake designer and manufacturer... this was hilarious! You nailed it Gale!!!
Thank you.
Is that something banks sells?
Mr. Banks probably the most honest man in the automotive industry. His video on the rear differential cover should be required watching for any truck owner.

Again, great thanks to the Banks team for all your hard earned work, effort, care and support.
“Just take the air filter entirely off and purchase a new engine every six months or less.
By the way, I sell engines.”😉
Since this style of air intake hit the market, I asked everyone on car message boards "WHERE DOES THE 'COLD' AIR COME FROM?" I got all kinds of Dunning-Kruger answers to that. Also, replacing plastic ducts with aluminum ducts, heating the intake air, was something else I pointed out. I shake my head every time I see a "cold air intake" sucking hot engine compartment air in a car. I am SO GLAD to see Gale comment on this. I didn't know he had a channel. I subbed immediately.
No use in talking to the Cold air crowd who sucks hot air from the engine bay.
Cucumber? Nah, Zucchini!
Don’t forget the good old potato!
The passion in Mr.Banks voice as he's talking about what actual research has shown to work and work right...the man seriously LOVES what he does.

What wrong with making different intakes?
Gale tells it like it is and his reactions are priceless. 🤣🤣 I have the Banks Ram air in my 7.3 Excursion and what he’s saying is true. I’ve learned so much and have been able to help my truck run better, but also educate my customers 👍🏻
Did it help your fuel economy thanks

Glad someone is pushing back against these “hot air intakes”. When I was young and dumb I fell for K&N’s marketing of their oiled filters and open intake systems.
This was the most brutal unbox/review ever. Gale is Savage 😂😂
It is gimmicky that an exhaust can help MPG and power etc (It is possible in some applications that yes it will but 99% of vehicles this is not the case) It will however reduce EGTs
Banks exhaust is not overpriced considering it is a whole system.
They all want to make money at the end of the day. Banks is no exception
Great video. Just proves that MAFs are very specific and don't like to get changed by slapping a bigger pipe on.
Subscribed for the testing! Can't wait to see how good or bad that intake is.
These are the best videos. Absolutely love Gale reviewing other products.
WAM(warm air intake) is good for noise and throttle response, and maybe you'll pickup more mpg but power....... nah
You sacrificed air FILTRATION for an extra pony or two and threw $65 down the drain. 😂🤣🤦🏻♂️
The filter is there to FILTER the air.
I don't own a diesel, and probably never will. But I just love Gale Banks schooling the world with no holds barred.
Love this! So many gimmicks out there to make a quick buck. Thank you Gale and Banks Engineering for good products backed by science!
"What if the customer wants fentanyl?" 😂😂😂

There should be a universal fit design for a lot of this stuff.
From 200F to -40f is something like 1.8x air mass change per volume. Could think of that as being able to burn 80% more fuel, efficiently.
what a good way to explain that
I bet the restrictor is to be CARB exempt. The idea is for the end user to take the restrictor out. Looked pretty straight forward and a smart way to get around the CARB cert.

I don't own any diesel trucks but my son started to buy sell and then wholesale to dealers. he said Banks was the only way to go for off the shelf upgrades. so I stated looking at the products and told him from a physics standpoint this all makes since. then I saw some you tube videos yep it all makes since. and I thought y sone was just adorable when at 11 years old he told me dad. engines are just a bunch of air compressors that go bang at the right time not that complicated. of course he is 37 now. Gale Banks is an amazing Man who has put together an amazing team.
Most people don't understand the principles of fluid dynamics and the difference between volumetric flow and mass flow. From one engineer to another: well done!
But in a way the S&B guy is right. If someone wants an open filter, why not sell them one.
Because it basically says you will sell stuff that you know doesn't work, never trust someone like this , why would you even buy this

Even Barry's body language showed that he didn't really believe in what he was saying.
Actually really like S&B products and their filters and the fact that they actually bench test their filters for flow and filtration, because most companies don't test filtration. But I must agree that this does look absolutely ridiculous
This intake is a gimmick. It's literally designed with a built-in restrictor that ruins the purpose of larger diameter tubing.
Your first paragraph, that's too much work for these guys.
