I have seen David 11 times live from the front row, been to his home twice for Barn Bash events and have met him and his family several times...I can tell you from experience that he is the best male vocalist on the planet and has been for the past 25 years or more and it's not even close. It's so unusual that he has actually gotten better with age...
Great break down and reaction! So glad you found David, he's one of the greatest male vocalists of all time... just incredible. I hope you react to more of his. He's got tons of jaw dropping performances on youtube. No More Night, The Dream, O Holy Night.
David Phelps has classical training and was encouraged by his professors to do opera, but he and his family have a strong Christian faith, so opted out. He still does operatic selections (Nessum Dorma and on his latest release/album 'Una Furtiva Lagrima') Besides being a trained and experienced singer who can beautifully handle many styles/genre, he knows music theory and writes songs and arrangements, has his own studio, performance venue! He has been performing since high school and is now in his 50s and still 'going strong' because he know the importance of taking care of his 'vocal instrument'! He has also collaborated with 'New York Vocal Coaching' for an 8 part series on different vocal techniques/dynamics. Many thanks to the patron who requested this!!
@@julsgeroYes, he's better than the first two by a long shot. The only one who rivals and may surpass David at moments is Dimash. Both he and David are metahuman vocalists.
David Phelps is my absolute favorite male singer on the planet! He has been doing this a very long time. Check out his Nessun Dorma (in the black suit) Stunning!!
Hi Jess ! Nice first contact with probably one of the (if not THE one) very best voices of our time. Great power, great control, impressive range (with nice register transitions) and an very good storytelling, that keeps our breath suspended from beginning to end. Now that you've met Mr Phelps, i can only recommend you to check these songs of him : The Dream, No More Night, Nessun Dorma, Just A I Am, We Shall Behold Him, Your Time Will Come, O Holy Night, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Agnus Dei, Water, Let Freedom Ring, He's Alive, End Of The Beginning, I Wanna Know What Love Is, Heaven's Shore, Sanctus, Ave Maria, O Mio Babbino Caro, etc... There are tons of videos on his youtube channel, and everything is from very good to purely insane. Br.
Very nice analysis of David Phelps, one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. He can sing any genre of music from operative country and it's fabulous. Hope to see more of David from you😊
Jess, thank you for this gift. Mr. Phelps is AMAZING! As several have mentioned, his Oh Holy Night is one of the most astounding versions ever. Another great Whitney cover is Shoshana Bean's I Wanna Dance With Somebody which she varies by making it a bluesy jazz ballad that fits the song perfectly. Thank you for this great reaction!
1st time seeing your channel. David singing O Holy Night from like 20 years ago on a Gaither video will put you in another mindset. Give him a look and simply hold on. ❤❤
David also sings tenor with the outstanding Southern Gospel group, The Gaither Vocal Band. While he's no longer a regular member of the groups, he was for many years and still joins them for GVB reunions. If you want a real treat both technically and emotionally, check their performance of "Let Freedom Ring" at Carnegie Hall in support of the 9/11 responders. It was written with David's voice in mind and the GVB never does it unless David is there to take the tenor part.
It made me smile to see you just loving/relishing this recording. Gave me a warm heart. And then you provided the musical underpinnings in his choice of notes and technique. Very enjoyable video. I subscribed.
This song has great “bones” and I love the variations. Mr. Phelps is a phenomenal tenor. I also loved the cello and felt the piano did not compete with Mr. Phelps. Thank you for another excellent music theory lesson. I love your reviews.
I’ve loved David since e the mid 90s when he came into gospel music. Hes a Baylor graduate in vocal performance. This arrangement is brilliant. The cello and piano with David’s voice is stellar. The jazzy chord progressions are amazing and David’s voice speaks for itself. Every note emotes. Great reaction video
Whitney considered David Helps as her favorite tenor if I’m not mistaken. His older videos show his gobsmacked gospel style. This more recent video is a sample of a more contemporary style and his original songs on his newer recordings have a thoughtful, weight of life’s journeys. Enjoy his craft whether gospel or contemplative contemporary.
Well, I might be speaking the unforgivable for many right now... This is the first time I've heard DP sing this. I was hesitant to listen not because "no way could be compare to Whitney" but because I don't really like it. I know it's a difficult song. I know WH sang it well. Really well. But, well, chalk it up to personal taste. To be clear, I like other WH songs; not putting her down at all. But here I am listening to DP sing a song I don't particularly like. Am I magically a fan of the song now? No. I still recognize it as a very challenging song (it's definitely not a song one should sing without significant training). But I like David Phelps's version better. Perhaps it had something to do with the overall depth and warmth of the sound (including the cello) as opposed to the brighter, sharper (tone not pitch), shriller sound that David Foster's arrangement and production gave us for the WH version. It's not a matter of which version is better, at least for this cover (that's not always the case). Usually I prefer the version my ears are more famiar with when it comes to covers. This time, though, I prefer the one that's new to my ears. Thank you. I really enjoyed the analysis and the side by side comparison, slight though they were, of the melodies.
I would *love* to hear your reaction to something by the 70's British Progressive Rock band Renaissance. Lead singer Annie Haslam had some opera training. For a purely musical reaction, go with "Prologue". Other great songs include "Mother Russia", "Can You Understand" and my personal favorite, "The Song of Scheherazade". (Fair warning - Scheherazade is almost 30 minutes long.)
Mr Phelps is one of the best singers inte world when I comes to cross over. Without a doubt. But I don’t like his interpretation of I Have Nothing. He lacks the timing and grove and the warmth necessary. Whitney Houston had all this qualities in abundance. It sounds to much like an exercise. Sorry. I am not saying that is awful. But he just lacks the natural soul-feeling to make this work on the same level as a Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Gino Vannelli or Steve Perry.
Where are you, I didn't seen you since you react to Dimash, you are the best reaction channel for classical music, your knowledge iz amazing, why you forget Dimash, his got many good song and his technique is better, please react to his duet with Placido Domingo, from Bize opera Fisherman Perl, it's a best opera duet in a last 30.years,and just one thing, I forget how beautiful you are, I adore you ♥️😍🍀😇
He actually sounds like this. His take on O Holy Night is outstanding. Best take ever. He has a beautiful, God-given voive.
I cry every time I hear David singing o holy night. Phenomenal!

His Oh Holy Night is exceptional. Maybe a Christmas song you could cover around the holidays!
One of the greatest vocal feats of all time.

David Phelps is arguably the best male singer out there right now.
Guy Sebastian? Johnny manuel? Dimash?

I personally would never argue against with you.I feel the same. he could sing the phone book and make me love it.

I'm glad you included 'O Mio Babbino Caro', from 'Classic'! (the soprano aria that Bill Gaither insisted David sing)
Please do an analysis of his O Holy Night. It is one of the greatest filmed vocal feats in history. 3000/10 would recommend.
Such a wonderful analysis. You simply point out things that others are not even aware of. Bravo Soprano Notes!
Thank you!
Thank you. !!! My favorite male singer of all time !!! More please
Very nice analysis of David Phelps, one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. He can sing any genre of music from operative country and it's fabulous. Hope to see more of David from you😊
you should check out his version of o holy night
What a great performance from David Phelps, and a great analysis by Jess (as always). I need to watch again! Just WOW! 🥰😍🤩
Definitely check out his version of Oh Holy night! Arguably the best vocal performance of all time!
Don’t get more seasoned than this man…
These Are They by the Gaither band and David Phelps. Magic!!! Ditto to O Holy Night and No More Night!
David, on his 'Classic' album ('12) performs masterfully 'O Mio Babbino Caro'. Yes, a soprano aria!

extraordinary analysis and attention to detail 👏👏👏
Glad you liked it!

Try David Phelps' No More Night!
Nessum Dorma or Ava Maria. He does an exceptional job on both. You should listen to songs from his Freedom concert. Fire!!

Please do his version of Nessum dorma
I really enjoyed your reaction & expertise!
I'm so glad!

He was 52 here.
A LITTLE RESPECT GOES A LONG WAY WHEN COMPLIMENTING MY BEAUTIFUL YOUNG FRIENDS MUSIC AND REACTIONS COWBOYS ❤
Watch him sing "water" with daughter Maggie Beth Phelps. The apple don't fall far from the tree
Wow, you're smart. I actually learn stuff from your videos.
It’s awesome that he sang this in the same key as Whitney.
Your variations take is great. I will say some songs should t be changed
Would love to see you react to his live performance of O Holy Night 👀

more harder: terrible grammar.
This is a music channel not an English class. I also noticed the double superlative but my Mother taught me it's impolite to publicly correct someone.
Even if you do not choose to react to them.... do yourself a favor and watch his videos of both 'O, Holy Night,' and one he wrote, 'No More Night.'
