The first time I heard David Phelps singing this O Holy Night, I was at work, at my desk, and writing something. He hit that high note and I was NOT expecting that! I slammed my pen down on my desk and spun around in my chair! I couldn't help myself!
That high, strong note fits perfectly with the lyric because that's the best part: praising Jesus for Who He is! BELT IT OUT LOUD! He is worthy of all praise! :)
My wife wife was emotionally involved with Anthony back in the '80s but she was Baptist and he Pentecostal, so they decided that might be an issue. We were heartbroken when he passed at 44. But I pointed out to her that if she had taken that path, shed already be a widow. Anthony Burger was an incredible man. We will see him again someday. Btw thankfully denominational barriers aren't as pragmatic as they once were. The focus is Jesus, not so much personal ideology.
David Phelps is THE superstar graduate from Baylor University's Classical Vocal Performance program in Texas. He's been with the Gaither Vocal Band on and off for 20 years or more as their tenor, and tours almost non-stop.
I have only just seen this and to be really honest i have sang in many shows and i thought i had a good voice how wrong can we be this is possibly the finest rendition of this hymn as i have ever heard back to vocal school for me wow and i thought i was good obviosly not
Anthony burger greatest piano player there ever was. His hands were damaged at a young age doctors told his parents he would never have full use of them but the lord's strength is made perfect in weakness Now look at him rocking that piano like a boss!
David brings so much more to any song he sings, he brings the Holy Spirit alive! He will bring the listener to tears with the message as well as his exquisite vocals. He has been anointed to sing the praises of the great IAM! I appreciate your review, as I can tell you are a true vocal coach but David brings a whole new level to song because he is living the song as he performs, not just singing with perfection. Few vocalist can touch the heart of the listener as David does and bring tears to their eyes or bring them to their feet with such joy. Watch his performance of Nessus Dorma.
ive heard many many different versions of this wonderful song the lord has blessed us with over the years and all are are great but in personal opinion this right here is the best version I think I have ever heard or ever will hear! david is a geninue godly man and his voice is one of a kind and most importantly hes anointed!
I was so glad to see this come up on my recommended videos. This is, by far, my all-time favorite Christmas carol and all-time favorite performances. David Phelps has to be one of this generations most underrated tenor voices.
Thanx for this video. This is the most fantastic version of "O holy night" that I've ever heard in my entire life. Always amazes me every time I listen. David Phelps must be one of the top tenors in the world if not the best. Thanks for a good video. 😃
I just want to know how you get through this without crying? I'm a supposed big burly guy, that shouldn't show his emotions. And I'm in bloody tears everytime I watch this guy sing this song. I guess God is speaking to me. Hope he speaks to you as well. Merry Christmas.
Not just a choir, but many well known Southern Gospel artists, quartets, and such. One of the older gentlemen was George Younce the bass of The Cathedrals.
Unfortunately, with the video being from 2000, and likely within a month of Christmas at that, Glen Payne of The Cathedrals had passed away a year before the video.
David is phenomenal!!! I love as graceful his voice goes from note to note and I love the softness and passion I hear when I listen to him. This is by far my favorite of his redition of this beautiful song. I've seen him many times live but never heard him do this song live. The choir behind him (Gaither Homecoming Family) is full of wonderful singers. You should check out Mark Lowry's beautiful Mary, Did You Know from this same concert. Definitely, different styles, and unlike David, Mark is not vocally trained. Yet his voice and passion are magical. This particular concert was many, many, many years ago, and I actually believe Mark's voice has gotten better with age. The pianist you mentioned, is the late Anthony Burger, who was the pianist for the Gaither Vocal Band for years. He was outstanding!!! Thanks for your video. Loved watching your reactions, especially since I already had heard this video of David. 😊

Consider listening to David Phelps with the Gaither Vocal Band singing “Let Freedom Ring” live in NYC. It was recorded shortly after 9/11. It’s a very powerful performance where his range is really showcased.

Love your reactions! One thing you have to realize is this is not a “concert performance “. He is actually delivering a sermon. To stir the emotions and spirit of the audience he has to use this theatrical approach. That probably compromises the proper technical approach you’re looking for. Just a thought. Keep up the nice reaction videos👍
Remember this is a live recording in 2003 and NOT in a studio with vocal backing tracks and auto tune. How incredible smooth this is from the mellow softness to the range and power in his voice. This performance is right there with Celion and Mariah. Best male performance for sure...... AND it's Live. Some can put out something, but will always come back to this to compare.
Thanks for sharing! Glad to find this - truly extraordinary. Made my rounds through the reactions to this and now have listened to this version about 50 times since November...

Isn't needed. His top resonant high notes is top of the top. In his range he has one of the highest pitched resonant tones that at least I have ever heard. And these are not head but resonant chest tones. Fenomenal.
David is unbelievable. I remember when I first saw this on TV. I've seen him several times while he was in the Gaither Vocal Band. This song is a favorite along with his version of Nessus Dorma. The piano player is Anthony Burger. He was probably the best pianist in Gospel music. He won so many awards. He sadly passed away far too young. And, the choir is composed of the legends of Southern Gospel music.

I have seen David twice, live. Once in a Christmas Concert like the video and the second was at his farm here in Tennessee. Has has several concerts at his farm each year that he calls "Barn Bash". David majored in Vocal performance at Baylor in Texas. He is awesome to hear live.

I am now a long-haired, tattoo'd, . pierced metal-head that loves hard hitting blast beats and screaming vocals...but I was raised in a very strict Pentecostal home with a father as an elder in the church and a grandpa who was the pastor. I LOVE David Phelps, I have for a very long time. I was raised on the Happy Goodmans, Gaither Vocal Group, Crabb Family, The Cathedrals, etc. and some of the best vocalists and musicians are in gospel music. I had the pleasure of meeting him and getting a photo with him at IUP (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) 2 years ago. Very humble man and more importantly an extraordinary tenor singer. Fantastic as an individual or in a quartet.
David Phelps is an incredible singer. This song always makes me tear up because for David, and for me, it's not just a nice Christmas song but a song where every word is true and you can hear it in the passion with which David sings it. If you want to see just how amazingly talented he is, he's covered Whitney Houston's 'I Have Nothing'. There are very few singers who could take on the late great Whitney and do it the absolute justice it deserves. You absolutely should react to that ✨
The pianist is Anthony Burger. He was severely burned at 8 months of age when he fell on a heating duct. His parents were told he would probably never use his hands again, but he became a famously successful pianist. He died at the piano at the age of 44, in mid-concert on board a cruise ship.

Everyone has the same reaction when the choir comes in. I've listened to this version dozens of times, and it still gives me goosebumps. Just stunning.
Best male vocalist in the world today...David Phelps. Even at 52 years old now...he is unbelievable! I Know …having seen him 11 times now live over the past twenty years.
I remember driving to work on a snowy December night in 2003. I was skimming through radio stations (I had almost a half hour drive, so there was a lot of time to kill). I came upon the start of a really interesting version of "Do you hear what I hear." By the end of it, I was racing to work and actually called the radio station to find out who that artist was. You guessed it; Dave Phelps. One of the greatest male vocalists I have ever heard. If you haven't heard his version of this song, please look it up; it is on a level you have never heard.
This was done a few year ago ( about 6) when David Phelps was singing with the Gather Vocal Band still I think. Bill Gaither and his wife Gloria have written tons of gospel songs. Then Bill started making videos called the Gaither Homecoming where he would feature many of the older gospel singers. There were many in the group behind DP that night and many have since passed on but the GH videos gave them a chance to have a living legacy. We can all be thankful for that. Thanks for reacting to this.
It's not just a choir behind him. It's several generations of professional gospel singers all on stage at the same time. Bill & Gloria Gaither have done the gospel music world a huge service by organizing these types of events. Hearing that many people singing and knowing how to sing and nailing every sound that comes out of their faces is some of the most amazing ear candy ever.
I loved your honest reactions to David Phelps rendition of ‘O Holy Night’. I’m a huge fan of his and was delighted that ?Tim chose such an amazing piece to showcase David’s voice I’m also delighted to have stumbled upon your vlog! We are a singing family (solo/chorus/chorale), so I’m going to follow you - really interested to hear your thoughts on others’ vocal talents!
He is a vocal performance major from Baylor University. He was brought to the big scene as a nobody by Bill Gaither as the new tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band. He has been with them three different times for a total about 13-15 years. He has always said he felt he was called to sing Gospel music so that’s what he does.
As someone who has been raised on Gospel Music I can that David Phelps is the top 3 of my Gospel Artists. I Praise God for giving him such an unimaginable talent. This guy is on a different plane from most other artists. Both Gospel & Secular. Thank u for bringing him into the spotlight. He's earned it more than you know. And there's better content than this from him if u can believe it. Check him out with the Gaither Vocal Band. Especially in the songs: "I pledge my allegiance" & "Let Freedom Ring."
He is a lovely artist and all around cool/funny/genuine human being. His wife/family are GOOD people. Come to the USA and hear his full Barn Bash that he hosts at his home at Christmas time (3 nights after Thanksgiving in November). The REAL deal. I admire you and agree with your critique.
There are many incredible singers sitting behind him. Them getting up and joining in with him was spontaneous (unplanned), I'm told. Also, kudos to Anthony Burger on the piano! WOW!

Williams Robert E ... This concert was circa 2003
David is wonderful.
One of the best, or I should say, is the best male soloist I have heard.❤
Ok Beth, great reaction. I will like everyone of your videos just because you are you. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Had to watch this on Christmas 2020!
So amazing voice
I loved your honest reactions to David Phelps rendition of ‘O Holy Night’. I’m a huge fan of his and was delighted that ?Tim chose such an amazing piece to showcase David’s voice
I’m also delighted to have stumbled upon your vlog! We are a singing family (solo/chorus/chorale), so I’m going to follow you - really interested to hear your thoughts on others’ vocal talents!
Thank you! x
Also Ronnie Booth of “The Booth Brothers “ has a beautiful angelic voice. “Love was in the Room”. , “He Saw it All”
My favorite gospel singer and my favorite Christmas song!!
David phelps most resonant high notes would be a great reaction video
Phelps has been our little secret for the last few decades...happy to share him with the rest of the world :)
Best version! The Voice!
Especially in the songs: "I pledge my allegiance"
& "Let Freedom Ring."
The guy sitting in the chair at 5:13 is George Younce. His bass is incredible.
He really really is blessed with golden voice.
David is truly truly gifted AND he worked to get there: Praise His Holy N A M E ! ! !
Try this
Sohyang - Oh Holy Night - from “I Am A Singer 2” ... fast forward to her singing the song
There are many incredible singers sitting behind him. Them getting up and joining in with him was spontaneous (unplanned), I'm told. Also, kudos to Anthony Burger on the piano! WOW!
Technique plus God given talent and annointing!
Merry Christmas, Coach Beth. 🌲🌹🌲
