      Yes this was incredible! Great production values, and really insightful.
      On the point of subscribers and growing, I think you your video titles could be improved a bit to reach a wider audience. I'm not talking about clickbait or anything, but a simple informative title that would easily grab someone's interest if it were a "recommended" video in the sidebar. So for this video it could be something like "Hyper-realism in video games and why Uncharted 4 sounds so damn good" (bad title but you get the idea)
      I actually opened this in a new tab through reddit, kept on browsing, and then when I finally got to back to it had no idea which link it was that I clicked or what this video was meant to be about.
      Anyway very glad I watched this, and subscribed :)

    Nice video! Nice to see some love given to our work! Definitely going to pass this around the sound team here at Naughty Dog.

      I know! Someone's gotta give audio the spotlight once in a while. It's truly remarkable how much effort goes into a game like U4. So glad you enjoyed it.

    Great topic! So many film directors and game designers don't understand the importance of hyper realism and the sound "reward". As one of my instructor at Film School Said "You're not making a documentary on how that sounds in real life, you're making a film/game better"

    Really well done video, one interesting thing I noticed is the whole sword drawing thing is that Skyrim uses the "film-like" effect to make it dramatic yet there is a mod that changes it to the more realistic and "dull" one but amping up the overall feel and sound of it and it seems there are people that prefer that me included or maybe Bethesda themselves did a bad job who knows, maybe that is also one point of hyper-realism, its very jarring to hear a sword the whole "shink" sound when drawn but a stronger and louder realistic draw seems to fit, for me personally I hate the dramatic sword drawing sound, it became so generic to a point where I find it less amazing and cinematic. There is a whole mod for sound for Skyrim one even changing the arrow "whistle" sounds to have more of a punch, btw this is my first video from you and i am really amazed of its quality seeing as your channel is quite small, definitely earned a sub for what its worth

    I'd argue the difference between cinematic sound and game sound should be information. In games far more than cinema all aspects of the scene can matter, even aspects outside of the scene, because many games lack the strict continuity that makes cinema what it is. To follow I'd argue that hyper-realism or not isn't the key aspect of games sound and isn't how it can be recognised from cinema, the key aspect of game sound should instead be identity; Can this sound be identified by the player so distinctly that even when clouded by the rest of the sound design the player can understand its meaning? Consider a spectacle fighter, 3 npc's off screen each preparing a different attack, the player is using a visual spectacle of a combination move and needs to keep a combination going to truly hit that S rank; They need to know what attacks are coming for them, whether they hit anyone, how many hits they landed, when their attack will relinquish control so they can act, when the npc's will launch their attacks, probably want to know their resource situation, how many more threats there are, where they are in the world. All of this can be conveyed in the sound, and good design here isn't necessarily just a set of good sounds, but a carefully crafted cast of individually recognisable sounds, not drowning each other out, all identifiable even amongst the soundtrack

    Awesome video. If you're interested in some more great sound design, check out Naughty Dog's other title, The Last of Us Remastered. I think it's the best use of ambience i've ever heard. Dialogue adjusts as you move through different spaces, a character can even talk to you outside from a walkie talkie while you're inside a giant reverberant space and all of it is reflected in what you hear. The sound designers and audio implementers at Naughty Dog are fantastic.

  • @Kcranbarry

    Hey i have a question: Isn't Hyperrealism also important to avoid to reach the Uncanny Valley with audio? Or is it nearly impossible for games that don't use binaural rendering to reach this phenomenon beacuse the playback devices prevent this?

    • @MarshallMcGee
      @MarshallMcGee  7 років тому

      That's a really interesting question and to be honest I'm not sure to what degree the uncanny valley exists in sound design. The uncanny valley is usually attributed to human expression, meaning that someone's face just looks slightly off, so I imagine it would have to be a similar source with audio. For example you might get more of an uncanny feeling listening to Siri speak back to you on your iphone than listening to a rope or whip in a video game. I think your source needs to be attempting to emulate human behavior to get that sensation. Hopefully that kind of answers your question!
      -MM

    • @Kcranbarry
      @Kcranbarry 7 років тому

      Yes absolutely. Would be a nice research project to test wether you need human like voices to reach the uncanny valley or that atmos would be enough... and if its possible to reach it with sound. Thank you again.

    Did you get to make the video on surrealistic sounds?

  • @JZStudiosonline
    @JZStudiosonline 5 років тому +1

    I just want to say that muting the sound when snapping the dudes neck doesn't seem realistic. Even popping my knuckles or my back (Or anyone else's) makes a loud and audible sound.
    I don't have experience with snapping necks, but I'd assume it makes a similar sound.
    I also dislike the gun sounds in Uncharted 4. They sound kind of compressed, and don't have as much punch as gunshots should. They're also obviously either heavily modified recordings, or not recorded at all. Actually, all Naughty Dog games have weird and unsatisfying gun sounds.

    'Hyper realism' as you put it has its uses but also its fair share of minuses. It is responsible for swords in Hollywood movies that make those ridiculous metal sounds when they are barely moved through nothing but air, or even when just unsheathed and resheathed. I would argue many of these exaggerations actually sound lame rather than effective or 'cool'. Lol, I roll my eyes every time a normal motion with a sword sounds like someone violently sharpening two knives together.
    5:09 I hope less people working in audio design think like this guy. Sheesh. The dull realistic sound that the sword makes is 1000x better than that horrible cliched Hollywood sound that makes no sense and actually breaks my immersion. Have more faith in the player, designers, because we do know what swords and metal in general actually sound like and we don't need to be patronized with an outdated special effect sound that to our ears sounds almost as bad as those fake punch and bullet ricochet sounds in old movies.

    Don't take this in a mean way but no shit sound is perfect in Uncharted 4 it is made by a god and that gods name is Naughty Dog

  • @Jay_Sullivan
    @Jay_Sullivan 3 роки тому

    That "realism" clip wasn't realistic. You've clearly never heard a rifle drop, let alone on a plank of wood. That's also not what grappling sounds like, nor what a +150lb man running on old planks sounds like. However, it still sounded better. Uncharted sounds like a cartoon. While that may match its style, it doesn't sound impressive.

  • @DestroyedArkana
    @DestroyedArkana 7 років тому +2

    I actually found the gun sounds to be terribly bland. Even in the clip you showed they are extremely muted and sound almost more like toys or painball guns. Exactly the opposite of "hyper realistic" granted, that may be because you fire guns so much in the game and if they all had the real bang of an actual gun it would drown everything else out. It still makes the game feel so much more lifeless when you actually are in a firefight though. Gun noises are the most important part of a game that is 50% about guns in the main gameplay, I feel. The other part being the exploration, which they definitely get perfect.
    If you look at a comparison like this you can see how the gunfire can totally change how something feels: ua-cam.com/video/nYXqXm_LLHg/v-deo.html

    • @MarshallMcGee
      @MarshallMcGee  7 років тому +3

      Haha agree to disagree then. I think these clips are prime examples of perfect gun leveling / design. I'd also totally disagree that guns are 50% of this game. I'd put them more at 10%. There are entire stretches of the campaign where you never have to fire a gun if you don't want to.
      -MM

    • @Noah-Lach
      @Noah-Lach 7 років тому +3

      The gun sounds aren't perfect but when you compare them to the awful, fake sounds in the earlier Uncharted titles, the difference is night and day. These sound closer to Battlefield 3 than MW3.
