    Sensitivity +2/3 and speed +5 for cAF.
    There's another review on youtube with a user that showed the differences.
    Current behavior is by design because in the past users complained the cAF was pulsing too fast in dfd.

    I don't own the G9ii but an easy fix to the issue could be to set a button to AF ON NEAR which would solve that issue I would guess.
    Edit: I've used it for almost a month and the trick is to pre focus roughly where the subject will be and the detection takes care of it.
    I think the issue in your test was that you had subject detection turned on if you had turned it off i think it would have been quicker.

    Yes, out of the box if you haven’t adjusted any of the auto focus settings, they are set to be slow because I believe they’re optimized for a smoother video transition but if you go to set to set three, that’ll probably give you more of what you want you just have to tell it to focus transition faster. Just look up some videos. There was one by the Little Mix rep talking about that specific issue.

    Thank you for such a detailed review and the beautiful images that you captured with both of these cameras. Far more in-depth and objective than many of the comparison videos that I’ve seen for these 2 cameras. I’ve decided to stick with the OM-1 instead of transitioning to the G9II. One point of feedback: since the video is so long, maybe consider adding in chapter markings in the video description?

    i have the g9ii and 200 f/2.8 w/1.4x TC. do you have the latest firmware for that relatively old great lens? i also have the new 100-400 Leica Mk2 and think it focuses faster than the 200 f/2.8 (with latest firmware) but haven't run any tests. i was also wondering if you tried different AFC focus modes like zone or Point/spot.

    • @TJPhotography
      @TJPhotography  10 місяців тому +1

      Yep, have the latest fw in camera and lens. Did try different zones and sensitivity functions. There might be some differences, but it doesnt match the speed of the OM1 or other brands in the market. I also had a thought that the new 100-400 will perform better since that one is made for the new af system. But dont have the lens, so have not tested that one :(

    ALL mirrorless cameras struggle with racking focus inwards, they are fast only outwards. Ryan Mense (Sony guy) has a workaround where he points the camera at the foreground as he walks, to prevent the camera from auto sleep and so that the focus is always racking out (fastest) for a bird.

    Thanks for your critical eye ! I've seen some other discriminating reviewers that have found foibles with the G9 II & it has given me pause to wait a while - maybe until this summer or fall - before getting my own. When something is fairly new in terms of technology there are often bugs that need to be ironed out. I'll keep my eye tuned for upcoming firmware updates as well as down the road ' positive ' reviews on the G9 II camera. Thanks again.

    Wondering if you (or anyone else) has come across an issue with the joystick on the G9ii? On a demo unit I had my hands on recently, the joystick definitely moves the focus area/point on the LCD screen but the movement on the screen is particularly slow - especially when moving it up and down... and it's definitely much slower than my current G9! I was thinking perhaps it was a one-off issue but ....??

    • @TJPhotography
      @TJPhotography  9 місяців тому

      Yes, joystick moves in small bit when you tap it, but if you hold it, it moves faster. Problem for me is if you hold to long it moves super fast in direction you hold it in. It takes some getting used too. I also have this problem on s5ii.

Hope to welcome the Panasonic G9 II soon when the price will drop a little. Thanks for your great work and stunning impressions.

    Try the focus limiter on the G9 II. Set the near/far distance that the subject will be in. The focus does not have to move the full range and will be faster.

    • @TJPhotography
      @TJPhotography  10 місяців тому +1

      That might work, but doing so every time im out, isnt a good viable option for me in the long run. But thanks for the input :)

    • @leuallen3000

      It might work if the camera is set up correctly. The control dial can be used as fn buttons. This is very useful as you have four buttons to program which are very quickly accessible with your thumb and easy to find. I use them for functions I want to be able to find easily and use frequently.
      There are two functions to set up. The first turns focus limiter on or off. The second sets the distance parameters that will be used. Set the left button to on/off. In case your subject is not in the distance zone preventing focusing, you can very quickly turn off the focus limiter and focus normally. The parameters I would set to the right button. This makes it easy to remember where the function is.
      It is a little confusing assigning the buttons, Panasonic did not make it intuitive or easy. To me the menu system is a step backwards, OM-1 wins easily here. But once set you are good to go. To set the distance parameters, focus on the far distance you want. Select the Distance 1 button on the screen. Focus on an object at the near distance you want. Press the Distance 2 button. You can confirms you are set up correctly by looking at the distance graphic shown on screen.
      One reason SF is faster than CAF is that it is contrast while CAF is phase. Contrast is faster on initial lock on. I hope Panasonic fixes this problem for you. There are a couple of things I wish they would fix for me: add HDR and make the menu sticky.@@TJPhotography

    One question: does the folder thing working in bracketing or continues shooting mode as well?
    I mean, do I get a 10 shot burst also collected in a folder for example?

    • @TJPhotography
      @TJPhotography  10 місяців тому +1

      Thank you, glad to hear you enjoyed it. If you shoot with SH burst (super high burst mode) it will save all the shots in a folder. Not sure when it comes to bracketing, but it will likely do so there as well. In previous models, I know, I could enable/disable this in the menu system, but not quite sure how I do it yet in the new menu system :)

    Wish we had the dipper over here, very nice images. The G9 was my first m4/3 camera. I liked it, but it had faults. I liked the power switch which allowed one activation. The hair trigger shutter button and battery grip was a royal pain. The focus method (depth from defocus or whatever it was) was not so good. I did capture a number of great images with the camera. I am not a fan boy and will speak out faults of a system even when I own it. For me the BSI sensor 20.2MP of the OM System is better than the 25MP non-BSI of the Panasonic. I take some short videos and would like better focus, but 98% of my work is photography. Sad that other brand of m4/3 lenses don't behave well on the camera bodies. OM System, please give us 4K slow-mo on the OM-1 II.
