I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Big Sexy's one career home run doesn't make up for the amount of offense his presence in the lineup removed from his teams at the plate.
Here’s the problem with having pitchers hit under 2019 rules: unlike the other 8 fielders, pitchers are not everyday players. I could see a compromise in the future which amounts to the modified Shohei Ohtani rule: in the NL, the DH must be a member of the starting rotation, whether they are the day’s starter DHing for themselves, or DHing for the rest of the pitching staff. This gives everyone an incentive to develop more two-way players and lets the pitchers who like hitting get a chance to earn the right to represent their pitching staff at the plate.

Why not allow up to 9 DHs? - replace every "all glove no bat" player with an "all bat no glove can't run" player - cost the teams a small fortune but they do it in the NFL - a 53 man MLB roster - 9 on offense, 9 on defense; special teams would be players who only run the bases. Pretty much can't watch baseball at all anymore - got better things to do in those 4 hours (here in Red Sox land especially - let's play 5 - hours that is) but if given a choice it'd be NL all the way - actually having to manage the game - what a concept.
using the home run wall and video review to convince people. the only reason we have those know are because we now have the technology for video replay, and the home run wall has been around for many years and gives room for crowd attendance and make it easier on outfielders to not have to run 100s of feet for an obvious home run ball
I’m with the Universal DH. If we can protect the pitchers health, when they don’t really hit well after all, why wasting time? And it can make the game more exciting, with more offense
The "health" excuse is just bullshit. Pitchers are some of the greatest athletes in the world, you really think they're gonna get injured running for 5 seconds down to first? Sure they could get hit by pitches but that usually comes with no injury.
In cricket, the bowlers have to bat. some of them get high scores too. I don't think it is right to force the DH on the NL at all. It's good to have variety and encouraging subtle tactics.
The question is whether mlb teams think its worth keeping star players who are to old to field as DH in baseball even when they are not living up to thier contract.
One of the worst rules in baseball. 99.99% of the time a pitcher hitting is an automatic out. A dozen reasons why a pitcher should not hit. Nobody cares so there is no reason to list them. Ohtani is the only exception. And yes, I am fully aware Ohtani is in the A L.
I'm an internationalist, I was born in the USA. I have a love hate relationship in this. Baseball is one of these issues. My history goes back to the first mention of the game and an illustration from old England. A children's game. base ball. .. Bored and waitiing in encampments, soldiers on either side are seen playing baseball. The war over, the soldiers who excelled barnstormed, by 1869 an orhanized league exists. In 1876 the big money buys out the franchise and the National League is formed. What it is today, I don't recognize..
Yes you clearly are more in tune with the way the game is played and the spirit of the game than all of these professionals that downright disagree with you.
Better question is why just to watch one game the minimum I will have to spend MLB is $35 a month and that’s region based. I played for 20 years and you have made me hate baseball. Thanks for being greedy especially in this time
If the DH comes to the NL permanently, that will be the final nail in the coffin for me. I've been thru 34 years of life and won't be a fan for another 34 if the NL implements the designated hitter.
It should be a choice, if the Pitcher wants to hit, then let them hit, and if they don't want to be hit, have the DH I'm a 2 way player, and I switch hit, I love hitting just as much as Pitching. It should be my choice as the pitcher wether or not I want to hit or not.
I'm surprised Shohei Ohtani didn't get recognized for being an absolute beast at both Pitching and DH.

Didn’t Holliday say that there is a distinct difference in hitting in both leagues? Isn’t the AL more about homer, while the NL more about contact?
Those videos are gold.
using the home run wall and video review to convince people. the only reason we have those know are because we now have the technology for video replay, and the home run wall has been around for many years and gives room for crowd attendance and make it easier on outfielders to not have to run 100s of feet for an obvious home run ball
"So, quick question..." okay, I have a quick answer then.
"...should there be a designated hitter?" No. Next.
And this video is trash.
Nice video, I’m a huge Frank Thomas Fan. Who can’t wait to see the new baseball season and new DH for N.L.?
@mlb this is a topic i think about a lot and i think its cool that theres a universal dh good vid
Shohei Ohtani is a great batter though even when he's at Hokkaido nippon ham fighters
Shohei Ohtani is an outlier.
How about you make it universal DH but if a pitcher also wants to hit then sure he can pitch and be DH
The Reds have the best year to have a DH. There shouldn't be a DH, you can't keep the pitcher honest.
Yes you clearly are more in tune with the way the game is played and the spirit of the game than all of these professionals that downright disagree with you.
@@Barry-v3r which professionals? I'm sure you can find people to argue either.
In Little League I pitched and batted cleanup and I loved it
Better question is why just to watch one game the minimum I will have to spend MLB is $35 a month and that’s region based. I played for 20 years and you have made me hate baseball. Thanks for being greedy especially in this time
Can’t wait to watch!!!!
My opinion on a single sentence: BARTOLO HAS DONE IT!!!
If the DH comes to the NL permanently, that will be the final nail in the coffin for me.
I've been thru 34 years of life and won't be a fan for another 34 if the NL implements the designated hitter.
Imagine throwing away your fandom because you can’t watch a guy strike out.
Dh’s are only for American League
Here’s a quick question, what do the different signals umpires do mean?
It should be a choice, if the Pitcher wants to hit, then let them hit, and if they don't want to be hit, have the DH
I'm a 2 way player, and I switch hit, I love hitting just as much as Pitching. It should be my choice as the pitcher wether or not I want to hit or not.
We all love mlb it is the best who is exited for it coming back
Universal DH make it happen MLB
I think pitchers should be allowed to hit if they want to, if they don’t then just use a DH
