Not only did Sean Connery quit acting after this film, but the director Stephen Norrington - who directed the first Blade movie - never made another movie again, either...
Penny Dreadful is like a good version of this idea. It's a horror show set in the late 1800's that involves classic horror monsters. It was on Showtime.
Penny dreadful isn't as good as people constantly make it out to be. Damn near half the series was about the possession of miss ives who is supposed to be a great witch and capable of warding such things to begin with
Hellsing kinda does this better too. And Bloodborne spiritually takes from this but makes it genuinely horrifying. You play a guy in a Victorian setting who fights Werewolves(mostly) Vampires, Witches, and eventually eldritch bs
Captain Nemo is honestly the mvp of this movie. He got and supplies all the cool equipment, he is just a badass normal dude with a sword in a world of monsters, he is a genius that invents stuff far before its time, despite maybe being one of the most normal humans on the team he commands the respect of both the others and his own men and this whole operation would have instantly failed if it wasnt for him. He is the Batman of the league.
Totally. 20,000 leagues under the sea is awesome. He wants revenge on the British Empire for exploiting India, but he doesn't really hate individual people. He rescues the main characters, but then says they can't leave, but they'll be treated well. A villain, but not really evil.
@Moxie Maxie You obviously didn't understand what OP meant by that word. I don't even understand how you didn't understand that when it was quite obvious what they meant.
Hyde went good because he was angry his formula was stolen. This flick is a guilty pleasure of mine, I put above Van Helsing in my "It's so bad it's good" category. It's a very 2000s half baked, quick pace flick.

It's a decent time killer... although it can definitely use a remake since the technology has improved drastically to make some of these characters really shine. Although I really do like the special effects they did for the invisible man, especially when he applies his white makeup 👌
I'd say it would better to do a sequel with Shayne West reprising his role as Sawyer, set in the mid late 1900's and He's now got the Quartermain curse where Africa won't let him die, or age very slowly, on the condition that he carries the torch. Maybe even bring back the old gang, with preferably the same actors. It definitely is one film that deserves something to follow it.
I think Huckleberry Fin would have been a much more interesting character. You have him have a more modern veiw on stuff like race. But relating to how he thought freeing Jim would damn his soul to hell, these oppinions being him misery. And you could also have him have the backstory of meeting a bunch of American tall tales already like the Jersey Devil and Paul Bunyan, so he has a seen it all attitude.
There was such series potential here. I always imagined their adventures would continue to a rescue mission for the First Men in the Moon, and culminate in the Martian invasion.
I liked this film a lot. I thought it had a touch of all these (fantasy, horror, mystery, adventure) and Sean Connery's Alan Quartermaine was as classy as Bond (lol). Sean Connery gave a wonderful performance ( and he was unhappy making this! ) I loved & enjoyed his films and miss him to this day. I've only seen 1 Bond film with him as Bond.)
I like the movie, but even as a kid I didn’t understand why Tom Sawyer was there and I didn’t like him. I thought “Isn’t Tom Sawyer supposed to be a kid?” and it really annoyed me as a child. He was the least cool character by far, even if you’re a 7 year old that has no idea he wasn’t in the comic. Also, the movie feels bloated and long. As a teenager, the memories of this movie and Van Helsing were indistinguishable. Like I thought I was remembering one movie until I rewatched Van Helsing and was like where did all the characters I remember go.
Man, I used to love this movie as a kid but I had no idea who everybody was I just liked it because it was an entertaining action movie. I was shocked when I first was listening to you guys and how you alluded to how it was a bad movie this shows me why and gives me a great laugh with it
I gotta admit it's actually really clever the Invisible Man in this film isn't the og version since he's known to be a psychopath. I think it's a missed opportunity but it would've been cool if maybe he was working with the Nazis and we had an invisible face off (no pun intended)
I first saw this when I was 13 way back in 2003. I loved it immediately, but over the years I've heard nothing but bad things about it from movie fans. Watching this video has actually made me want to go back and rewatch it. It honestly seems pretty badass in a lot of scenes.
Part of the hate for the movie is related to how good the comics are. They're gritty too, and the movie was made pre-Nolan so people were craving a darker cape flick. It'd be a good HBO or Netflix adaptation these days.
47:07 I always assumed the "Tin Man" armor is a reference to Ned Kelly, an Australian outlaw who wore a bullet proof armor and the helmets look like old garbage bins.
Im happy to read so many positive comments about this movie because I actually love this film too. I get why some people don't but it's a fun film. Sean Connery was great as Alan Quartermaine and I'm sorry that this film was the catalyst for his retirement.

I remember going to see this with my dad and he was so giddy about seeing it. If I recall, the entire selling point of the film in advertising and word of mouth was that it was Sean Connery’s final film 😂like that made it extraordinary I remember very little about this film…other than crying when Sean Connery’s character dies and “passes on the torch”. For real expected to see Shane West in EVERYTHING after this and he disappeared instead (I know he did other things after this film but I never saw adverts for them or anything and it was a stark contrast from this time period and him coming off of A Walk to Remember)
I'm glad y'all made the Van Halsing comparison, these seem similar in lighting, color pallet, and having all these elements to make a fun blockbuster but instead we got kind of a dull experience bloated with CGI special effects and clear studio interference.
The guy yelling "Halt!" at the tank reminds me of Will Farrell's scene from Austin Powers, screaming "STOPPPP!' at the impending steam roller for almost a minute.
I actually really loved this movie as a kid. I thought it was so cool to see so many book characters come together. It was The Avengers before the Avengers. I think the main issue with this movie is that it should’ve focused more on the dynamics between the characters and the script over making a mindless blockbuster. I do think if they made this movie today, it would be much better
This happens to be one of my guilty pleasures! Now I'm going to watch it. I don't think I made my last kid watch it with me yet. I bet she'll be the only one who hates it. Lol
Maybe it’s just cause I was a kid when I first saw it but I loved LXG. I thought it was pretty good for such a “bad” movie. I really liked it still. I liked that they made a period piece where all the classic literature characters teamed up as the first superhero team. They should reboot it as either a new movie or a TV series with the involvement of Alan Moore so that it stays closer to the source material cause it’s a cool idea for a franchise. Think of the other characters they’ve could’ve used it the movie were successful. We could’ve had a sequel where Mina Harker is being tormented by Dracula and they have to enlist the help of Van Helsing. I’d love a new attempt at a movie about this group. Daniel Craig would be a great casting choice for Quartermain or Invisible Man.
People talk shit about this film but I love it, we get to see characters we don't normally see, like : Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo, Invisible Man and Alan Quartermain!
The league of extraordinary gentlemen, Van Helsing, Abraham the vampire slayer, and Hellboy i’m sorry guys those are the best action movies and steampunk era concepts that worked for me 😢❤❤❤❤❤❤
This movie made me super interested to read dr jekyl & Mr Hyde. Imagine my disappointment when he never transformed into the hulk but was just an alcoholic
This movie is a masterpiece and it's a shame that they never made a sequel by the way it ended, but it was a big mystery. Connery always brilliant with every role.
I honestly love this Movie.. regardless of the hate it receives. To point out the Reasons why Hyde helped out The Group. Personal Interest. Jekyll volunteered to help The Group, and Hyde is part of Jekyll. If Jekyll dies, Hyde dies. It's really that simple. He only started liking what he was doing later on. That sound that Hyde was reacting too, was most likely in a frequency that only Animals could hear. Think - Lex Luthor message to Superman. One final thing, the reason why the Main Bad Guy united them, was to ensure that they take the fall. They were the Patsies of his Master Plan. Which is funny, because as you guys have pointed out.. he pretty much helped himself - destroy, himself. 😅
If only Sean Connery took LOTR instead of this, he might have continued acting longer, but chose this movie because he didn’t understand LOTR’s script. Also, had Connery retired after doing LOTR, that would have been a hell of a movie to end a career with
It's a shame that Connery quit after this, because he was still in great shape at this point. He could've still done some great work, even just as a swan song.
I certainly am familiar with Dorian Grey as someone who has the first name Dorian it was the one famous example of my name that got brought up, that and the bad guy from the Mask, and Ray J on Moesha lol
Shout out to Sir Sean Connery for finishing that movie. I thought the movie was excellent and it wouldn’t been as excellent if it had not been for Sir Sean Connery, so thank you sir, for finishing the movie
I saw this movie when I was a teenager.. I loved it.. I still do.. just the idea of literary characters being superheroes.. it's just extra special compared to comicbook superheroes
When people talk about bad adaptations, this isnt brought up enough. LXG is one of the best comics I've ever read in my life and turned into something unrecognizable. The movie is completely different in just about every way possible. They basically bought the name and then did some other shit. A closer adaptation under a different name is Penny Dreadful by showtime. Actually, Alan Moore sued the filmmakers for ruining his work and showtime for stealing his work and won both suits.
It is interesting that a movie like this was made in the year 2003, especially at the same time when Freddy vs Jason was coming out too. Back then, seeing a film like this was unheard of in the world of live-action. One would have to go read comics or wait for Saturday morning cartoons. This film truly does holds significance for the time-period it came out in, especially when considering what would come out in just 9 years. It is sad to think about this film being Sean Connery's last live-action performance (I believe he did voice-acting for two more projects later on), and I don't mean that in saying this is a terrible movie. Personally, it's a movie so bad that it's entertaining, and Connery does pull off some good moments in this film. It's just sad to hear about the experience of making this film being so bad (which I bet was probably building up over his career) made him want to quit acting and just retire. I mean, what else can you say but "Damn!" Captain Nemo is the best character in the whole movie. He is confident in being a leader, he takes care of his men, he holds the team together, and he uses what he has to do good. Granted, I don't know anything about the character in the books, I'm just speaking of the character in the movie.
The only reason why I think Sean Connery accepted this role is because he thought this might be a big hit. Sean Connery we’re huge in the 1960s when he was catapulted into world stardom for playing James Bond. However after that his career fell into a dwindle throughout the next decade and didn’t really pick up again until the mid to late 80s for roles in stuff like Highlander, The Untouchables (for which he received an Oscar win), Indiana Jones and the last crusade and Hunt for red October. However his career started kinda dwindling again in the 90s when he turned down some big project like he was offered the role of Dr Hammond in Jurassic Park, Morpheus in the Matrix and yes, Even the role of Gandalf the Grey in Lord Of the Rings, because he quote “didn’t understand the plot”. He must’ve thought this was gonna be a win and it wasn’t 😅
Poor Sean. Turned down GANDALF in "Lord of the Rings" because apparently he didn't understand the script. He turned down MORPHEUS in the "Matrix"--because he didn't understand the script. He was even tapped to play Deckard in "Blade Runner"--guess what? He apparently didn't understand the script. So when this mess came around, and he didn't understand the script because it sucked, he decided that it was a sign that it would become a major blockbuster. Wrong choice. Again. So he left movies and went back to his main hobby of misogyny. Alan Moore's book before this was Watchmen--possibly the best comic story ever written, that shows super-people as flawed, broken, and human. It's a theme he does really well, being quite a nutball himself. He has a really really bad habit of giving away full rights, then complaining loudly when Hollywood gets it completely wrong.
I was watching on twitch when they shot this. but I had to rewatch this one it's got me rollin man😂😂😂 also when Townsend said growl he was just finishing a bump of coke it looked like 😂😂 51:20 😂😂😂
I was listening to this episode while I was waking up and getting ready in the morning, so I wasn't super alert yet. But when I first saw Cory, I thought his shirt said Player Alert. 😂
Stuart Townsend was originally cast to play Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings, they even started filming with him, but it wasn't working out, so then they replaced him with Viggo Mortensen.
If you're looking for superhero movies that aren't Marvel or DC consider animated movies like Megamind or go beyond Hollywood and try foreign films like Major Grom: Plague Doctor.
All n all it was a good movie for that Era but these guys commentary for certain scenes had me crying laffin especially when the first meet up happened 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Honestly i remember the daily news giving it 4 out of 4 stars ⭐ and i watch it i thought it was good aside from the invisible man in the cold snow it was good.
Another dumb line was at the beginning when the tank opened a viewing port, and a cop screams 'THERE ARE PEOPLE INSIDE!', like c'mon you have trains, and the cop that got run over clearly assumed someone was driving it.
I enjoyed it, but perhaps it may have fared better as a miniseries...where each character had their own episode, then the later episodes could've bought them together...
Never read any of the graphic novels but from what I understand they're supposed to be a deconstruction of Victorian literature and values and then just becomes deconstruction of fiction altogether as it goes on. That would have made for a way more interesting movie but obviously in 2003 there's no way they would go that far for a dumb comic book movie. Maybe there's still hope for a series on one of the streaming services.
I watched it at the movies, I remember Sean Connery fighting someone and I realized ...they weren't in the same room!, as in, each actor filmed their scene against a stunt double. Is like as if both actors weren't available to film together.
Not only did Sean Connery quit acting after this film, but the director Stephen Norrington - who directed the first Blade movie - never made another movie again, either...

You have low standards if this is a masterpiece.
Masterpiece? You have crappy taste.
Masterpiece? Umm not sure about that, but it was an interesting idea, just executed poorly.
@@dncewzrd I think he's either just blinded by nostalgia or has shitty taste. You decide.
Who should reboot this?
Zack snider?
Kevin feige?
A remake of this could be great with the right people
I honestly love this Movie.. regardless of the hate it receives.
Also, had Connery retired after doing LOTR, that would have been a hell of a movie to end a career with
Funny enough Connery said the reason why he refused the roll is because "He found the material too complex & didn't understand it"
It's a shame that Connery quit after this, because he was still in great shape at this point. He could've still done some great work, even just as a swan song.

I certainly am familiar with Dorian Grey as someone who has the first name Dorian it was the one famous example of my name that got brought up, that and the bad guy from the Mask, and Ray J on Moesha lol
I love Korey's Sean Connery impression 😄
“Who ordered the whore?” 😆
Shout out to Sir Sean Connery for finishing that movie. I thought the movie was excellent and it wouldn’t been as excellent if it had not been for Sir Sean Connery, so thank you sir, for finishing the movie
Captain Nemo's backslap is what is called an Ottoman slap. Look it up xD
“Bad movie”?? I love this movie! 😂
Duly noted
I love y’all style of comedy 💯😂
I saw this movie when I was a teenager.. I loved it.. I still do.. just the idea of literary characters being superheroes.. it's just extra special compared to comicbook superheroes
This was shown on fx heavy back in the day
When people talk about bad adaptations, this isnt brought up enough.
The comic book it was based off was a lot darker I heard.
GODDAMN Captain Nemo's pimp hand is STRONG AF!!!!!
Which is worst front or back hand lol
Not only did Connery retire from acting, Stephen Norrington never directed a major movie.
Not to be confused with the excellent League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen
Am I like the only guy that enjoyed this movie and wanted a sequel?.. plenty of far worse films have come out in recent years..
I mean, what else can you say but "Damn!"
Captain Nemo is the best character in the whole movie. He is confident in being a leader, he takes care of his men, he holds the team together, and he uses what he has to do good. Granted, I don't know anything about the character in the books, I'm just speaking of the character in the movie.
I Love This Film, Til This Day, Honestly Needs a Remake Very Entertaining Movie.
I still like this film. I think it suffers from the same flaw as Daredevil (2003) and Ghost Rider (2007) though, a weak main villain.
This is one of my guilty pleasure films
I will always love LXG for its fun nature.. Wished it would’ve been a better movie but I still love it
My man Nemo walked so that Iron Man could fly
I was watching on twitch when they shot this. but I had to rewatch this one it's got me rollin man😂😂😂 also when Townsend said growl he was just finishing a bump of coke it looked like 😂😂 51:20 😂😂😂
Thought y’all would have mentioned the immense submarine making tight left and right turns in the waters of Venice, despite being like 150 feet long
I was listening to this episode while I was waking up and getting ready in the morning, so I wasn't super alert yet.
But when I first saw Cory, I thought his shirt said Player Alert. 😂
I love this movie. It is hilarious.
Need a bad movie review for the Avengers with Uma Thurman, sean Connery, and ralph fiennes
Even Dr Jekal said "let's not make a sinner to a Saint" after he saved te ship and everyone was praising him.
Stuart Townsend was originally cast to play Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings, they even started filming with him, but it wasn't working out, so then they replaced him with Viggo Mortensen.
They said he was too young.
I'm so scared for the wolverine game now.
Not Nazi soldiers but Prussian pre WW1 soldiers. Loyal with emperor Wilhelm the 2nd.
This movie is a guilty pleasure. I know its technically bad but i enjoyed the movie
10:51 "Don't wonder off!"
(Proceeds to ride over his @$$)
This movie made Sean Connery quit acting, he hated this movie so much.
Yo that fake Alan gettin shot part had me dying 🤣😂🤣😂
26:36 I like how Korey highlights the sponsors.....you never know when he's gonna bring them in 😂😂😂😂 !!!!
You should look at MYSTERY MEN for your non-DC / MARVEL superhero films.
Too be honest this was never bad to me
Paramount should try to remake this movie.
