I'm running 4k with a 4070 Ti Super (haven't run SC at 4k yet) but in general most of the games I play work well in native and top out around 165 fps (gpu limit). I play a couple of titles that are more demanding and the good news is that DLSS Quality at 4k is a MUCH higher quality upscaling result than the same scaling factor (67%) at 1440p and it gts me over the hump in terms of frame rate if I need it.
I've not had any luck with Vulkan in 4.0. there seems to be a critical crash when Optimizing Shaders with my 7900XTX. Though I haven't tried rolling back to the previous drivers yet.
I was impressed by the substantial performance improvements. Once we get Vulkan in a good place and virtualized geometry in we might actually get higher player counts without a slideshow. I know 60fps is substandard but I think it’s a reasonable target for this game in more intense scenarios.
I hope CIG doesn't allow people to turn off graphical options like shadows/dust/clouds, because allowing it would provide a competitive advantage, and that would be a shame.
This is an interesting one. Nvidia is being stingy with the amount of VRAM they're putting on their new 50 series cards, and you can't upgrade the RAM on a GPU so game studios are going to have to adapt somehow.
@fnunez the main reason i am keen is that I only have 8gb vram and ive seen usage go down from 7.9gb to 6.2gb in 4.0. wondering how it fares for other cards.
Great video, have you felt the slowdowns whilst running around the Pyro stations? I expect it's likely server related? It almost feels like periodically running through some viscous fluid, looks like it may be happening at around 09:30?
Thank you for the video. I agree with you this is the top of the development hill. In a way it is all down hill till release. Thanks again for the video and I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.
I have a 3060ti and a 4080 super. It seems to matter more with the ram that I have. The fps jumps when I introduced the increased ram. One of my pcs has 32 gb and the other 64. Very noticeable. I had 32 and moved to 64 and it was amazingly better.
I also have had a better experience going to 64. Just using task manger while game is running it show my 32 maxed out and cpu running 92% Now cpu 69 max and 60% ram. Ram is one of the cheaper upgrades. I have all non use programs closed and with just windows idle it was 18% on 32.

their target for static meshing was 15 fps so from what I've seen they've handily beat that target. haven't had a server that was less than 20 tick rate so far.
one thing that surprised me after the 4.0 preview hotfix patch was... that I didn't have an "automatic best setting"?! no matter which patch, I've always had a "best setting" for the graphics where I actually only had to turn off vsync and motion blur! today I played the game for the first time after the hotfix and I almost had a heart attack! under 20 fps in A18 and when approaching stations "single digits" in places, 3 minutes waiting time until the station spawns... panic attacks when the whole asteroid field suddenly pops up and the FOV is at the lowest level...? only after I set the GFX settings to the usual values did it work with a "comfortable" 40 FPS in A18. why is CIG TSR the standard setting????? and with DLSS I had a bug that said it wasn't available at 57% and below (speed)?????
I have a question: Why is the GPU time shown in the in game framegraph at 0 in your footage? I have also tried out 4.0 and the framegraph is showing the same thing for me. I wonder why that is.
I wish my performance increased, but it seems to have decreased from 3.24. In 3.24 I was getting 30-55fps in Orison, and up to 100 in space, but now on 4.0, I'm getting 20-35fps in Orison, and just barely over 60 in space. Seems no matter what I change with settings, resolution, or even if I enable upscaling, nothing changes, I'm very confused. That said, I had the same issue on an early 3.24 build, but the last one cleaned it up for me. Running 1440p with an R5 5600, RX 6700XT and 32GB 3600.
I'm running a 10700kf on a B board 32gb RAM RTX2070overclocked. My performance has improved since server meshing, vulkan and upscaling have been implemented. Cities are still a bane on my fps but it's looking good. Great video as always!
holy shit. 10 servers on a shard? wasnt expecting that much. honestly i think cig should lower the player count. like imagine the old 100 player with that 10 server shard? or even just 4? the playability would be so good. something that sc has been struggling with for far too long. the whole "when it works, its amazing". and well the server meshing makes it work better, but not so much when u scale the player counts up with it. im still prob going to wait for full 4.0 release before hopping back in tho
Just when they fix one essential feature for the game to be playble, another one gets broken (contracts, quantum travel) which makes the game unplayable again. It's like 2 buttons, you press one, theother closes, and if you press the other one, the first one closes.
The best thing about vulkan is that it doesn't stutter at all, the fps is about the same for me, but the stuttering is completely gone, making the world of a difference. Please mention this to the peeps if you get the chance 🙏
For some reason my performance is the same or even worse, 30 fps or lower in cities on a ryzen 7 7800x3d. I can’t help but feel that I am doing something wrong
Your RAM... its probably either garbage or you aint enabled EXPO / XMP Jedec of 4800 vs the sought after 6400 tunes its over 30% difference in FPS... Game is more so RAM bound now
I only started playing star citizen about a month ago, but the glitches seem pretty infuriating right now. Missions, navigation, elevators and hangers being regularly untenable has really made it hard to build up my wealth in game to upgrade ship.
6700xt here and an i7 10th gen. Running on Linux and after the update I do see the huge change in Performance, seems like towns however are indeed not really affected, same ish low FPS there >
4.0 has been a huge improvement on the server itself for responsiveness and NPC AI. The other backend systems are still needing refactors to take advantage of the meshing and still iffy at times, but I was pleasantly surprised. I played in the meshing capacity tests and based on those I figured it was another year out before a PTU could be seen. They had one run of Pyro with 6 servers and Stanton with 4 and 600 players that worked well sans the backend services getting taxed, so I guess they went back to 5:5:500 for better stability until more of the backend services get updated. Missions are their focus for now because without missions there's nothing to do except pvp and they still need work hence why it didn't go full live. I am glad they decided to keep it cooking in parallel instead of pushing it out too soon. The core server tech is important to get dialed because everything in the future hinges on meshing working. I am on a 11700K 64GB DDR4 3200 RAM 3080ti 12G 3440x1440p resolution and I can hold 30-40 minimum FPS+ anywhere so far with everything on very high with medium clouds. In space I am now hitting 90-100 FPS in the PU where I could only hit that in Arena Commander in the past. I will have to try Vulkan again. In 3.2x it was unstable for me with LOD artifacts and gave no visible FPS gains over DX11a. Having said that I am still impressed with what they can squeeze out of DX11a with a game engine core that was originally built around DX9/10.
The purpose of Vulkan is not necessary a better framerate (for now), but a more efficient at compiling shaders for instance. Its MUCH faster in Vulkan, where you almost have zero stuttering. In this case, the CPU and GPU are capable of doing more and thus, eventually, the FPS might be better in the future when they actually optimize the game assets and landing zones. There is a massive amount of area with memory leak, unoptimized assets.
Nice video, dude and Merry Christmas! I have a question: What do you think would be the better upgrade on my 7800X3D & 4070 Super (if you have to choose only 1)? 9800X3D + 4070 Super, or 5070TI with 7800X3D?
How do the clouds affect the CPU? I have a slower cpu then the one tested in this video (12900k) but have a 4090 so if I were to use photo mode clouds would my cpu be a detrimental to my performance?
Yeah will be interesting to see if they do try that out at some point in the nearish future. Would be good to see what instancing can do for performance!
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the performance in pyro. Especially server performance which has been locked to 30. My only gripe left is the cpu bottleneck, just waiting for them to shift processing power over to the GPU more.
The NPCs contribute more to the liveliness for me than the players, but yeah. 4.0 with 500+ players and full NPC population runs magnitudes better in every way than 3.0 did even with just 5 players and almost no NPCs.
Performance has improved for sure but apart from sight seeing trips this patch is pretty much unplayable. Hundreds of people trapped in Klescher, quantum travel taking people to the wrong place, ships stuck in hangars to name but a few.
Optimization is terribly bad, and yet no DX12 DLSS Frame Generation support? My 4080 supper is not fully utilized! This is why I uninstalled SC for now and refused to support it atm.
It is still kinda weird though how CPU heavy 4.0 is. My I9 9900k is used to 80-100% while my RTX4070ti super is about 50% on 1080p. Haven't tested much but planet side like Arc Corp feels quite sluggish. But much better than in 3.x
I geting a new cpu also thanks to the game i test 4.0 and i was cpu bound. Will be intersting how far my 3060ti will bringen me they way. Have a nice holiday
When Vulkan came to NMS it was worse then OpenGL (hard to believe I know), but over time Vulkan became a lot better and is not the ONLY api afaik that NoManSky uses. It seems to take time to get Vulkan up to snuff and past.
Vulkan is badly broken for me, sadly. Prior builds it was very smooth with minor glitches, if I try now many textures don't seem to be loading. AMD RX6600xt.
Vulkan performs better on fully AMD-powered systems because it was developed by AMD (Mantle). Testing Vulkan on NVIDIA hardware doesn’t provide the most authentic experience.
Vulkan just straight crashes my game on startup to the point that I had to change it back to dx11 by going into the game files and finding the config. I am using the exact same rig as you; 9800x3d and 4080S

The 4090 is an absolute beast and significantly faster than the 4080 so you would do better at 4K. You'd still probably want to mess around with dlss. Let's hope they pick up the pace now!
@dkindig thanks for letting me know
What is the difference in performance from day 1 3.24 and 4.0 preview?
15 server FPS was their target for 4.0
I've not had any luck with Vulkan in 4.0. there seems to be a critical crash when Optimizing Shaders with my 7900XTX. Though I haven't tried rolling back to the previous drivers yet.
I have the 7900 gre, and also infinite optimizing shaders. With trying vulcan. Trying a full reinstall atm
It's been great for me! Would love to see a vram usage analysis across the different cards to see if 8gb is still a no no.
Cheers and merry Christmas!
What is the default setting for clouds ?
Also i loved the jump to pyro!
Great video, have you felt the slowdowns whilst running around the Pyro stations? I expect it's likely server related? It almost feels like periodically running through some viscous fluid, looks like it may be happening at around 09:30?
Thanks! Yeah on the stations I've definitely felt them but not really anywhere else. Hard to know exactly what might be causing them!
I’ve been playing for two days now. 9 hours yesterday and 6 hours today and the game has run flawlessly for me.
Happy Xmas 10£42 🎉🎄🎉🚀
Thank you for the video. I agree with you this is the top of the development hill. In a way it is all down hill till release. Thanks again for the video and I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas.
It would be nice to see performance comparison 3.24 vs 4.0, sines we have both available.
Nice Performance numbers
Id love to see you upgrading your tests to 64GB of RAM though!
Im regularly above 32GB of Usage! (Especially on Vulcan)
Just using task manger while game is running it show my 32 maxed out and cpu running 92%
Now cpu 69 max and 60% ram.
Ram is one of the cheaper upgrades.
I have all non use programs closed and with just windows idle it was 18% on 32.
That was on 3.24
The most recent build before 4.0 preview of Vulcan had been running much better than dx11 before this patch came out. Much better.
"live effectively"
Right. Get back to me when live has been all the way released and stable for two straight weeks.
Hope you can find it in yourself to at least enjoy Christmas. Seems nothing can make you happy lol
Laptop [ Razer Blade (2020) Base ] ,
i7 10th gen (undervolted in throttlestop)
32GB RAM
RTX 2070 Max-Q
Nvme Samsung 970 Evo 1TB
Win 11
4.0 has improved 20-30% in perfrormance
25-30 fps on Cities from the beginning and 50-60 on Space , pretty promising where this is going
their target for static meshing was 15 fps so from what I've seen they've handily beat that target. haven't had a server that was less than 20 tick rate so far.
32gb of Ram?! Its not enough
Really? Was it not this very channel that tested 32gb vs 64gb and concluded that the difference is negligible?
Only gripe is when I try to QT and my ship just aims towards the star but I’ve been loving it
one thing that surprised me after the 4.0 preview hotfix patch was...
that I didn't have an "automatic best setting"?! no matter which patch, I've always had a "best setting" for the graphics where I actually only had to turn off vsync and motion blur! today I played the game for the first time after the hotfix and I almost had a heart attack!
under 20 fps in A18 and when approaching stations "single digits" in places, 3 minutes waiting time until the station spawns...
panic attacks when the whole asteroid field suddenly pops up and the FOV is at the lowest level...? only after I set the GFX settings to the usual values did it work with a "comfortable" 40 FPS in A18. why is CIG TSR the standard setting????? and with DLSS I had a bug that said it wasn't available at 57% and below (speed)?????
I play on photografic clouds mode with a 1070 gtx, 32gb ram and a ryzen 1700x and im happy. Works good in 4.0 i could not sustain it in 3.24
I have a question: Why is the GPU time shown in the in game framegraph at 0 in your footage? I have also tried out 4.0 and the framegraph is showing the same thing for me. I wonder why that is.
I wish my performance increased, but it seems to have decreased from 3.24. In 3.24 I was getting 30-55fps in Orison, and up to 100 in space, but now on 4.0, I'm getting 20-35fps in Orison, and just barely over 60 in space. Seems no matter what I change with settings, resolution, or even if I enable upscaling, nothing changes, I'm very confused. That said, I had the same issue on an early 3.24 build, but the last one cleaned it up for me.
Running 1440p with an R5 5600, RX 6700XT and 32GB 3600.
buy intel CPU and better ram, at least 6200.
I'm running a 10700kf on a B board 32gb RAM RTX2070overclocked.
My performance has improved since server meshing, vulkan and upscaling have been implemented. Cities are still a bane on my fps but it's looking good.
Great video as always!
The pvp in Pyro is certainly there. But I'd say it's mostly fps pvp rather than ship combat.
I was definitely one of the people who thought 4.0 would release as a total disaster and I'm thrilled to be wrong.
Your RAM... its probably either garbage or you aint enabled EXPO / XMP
Jedec of 4800 vs the sought after 6400 tunes its over 30% difference in FPS...
Game is more so RAM bound now
Thanks CIG, Keep it going, the dream is getting real!
Vulkan crashes my rx7800xt unfortunately but thank you for the video, good summary!
Dynamic meshing needs to be hammered out by the end of Q1
Should i start playing game on current live game or 4.0 preview ?
I get fps and stutering in cities on live build of game
I only started playing star citizen about a month ago, but the glitches seem pretty infuriating right now. Missions, navigation, elevators and hangers being regularly untenable has really made it hard to build up my wealth in game to upgrade ship.
6700xt here and an i7 10th gen. Running on Linux and after the update I do see the huge change in Performance, seems like towns however are indeed not really affected, same ish low FPS there >
My only big gripe is that, since Starchitect isn’t in game yet, many locations in pyro including the main stations are a carbon copy paste…
I tried using Vulkan with Intel Arc B580, even Arc A770. It crashed to desktop. Vulkan works on other games, but this one needs more work.
Thank You CIG! And Thank you TP42
No, it shouldn't. The clouds are treated by the gpu
On 4.0 screen size fixed?
Contested zones should be on special dedicated servers in the mesh of servers.
Yeah will be interesting to see if they do try that out at some point in the nearish future. Would be good to see what instancing can do for performance!
Agreed, this would be the best solution.
Really they could have multiple shards share the same contested zones too
And the crowd goes mild.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the performance in pyro. Especially server performance which has been locked to 30. My only gripe left is the cpu bottleneck, just waiting for them to shift processing power over to the GPU more.
Its been running very well for me!
Will anyone get the 5090? The high power draw might cause a few fires.
Game, being built for GPUs of the future 5…10 years from now
15sfps is the current target btw
no
For the server? Yeah that does sound familiar.
um .. having a 9800X3D doesn't hurt ... I saw double the frames when I went form I912900
Yep it definitely helps!
How are you able to even get into a ship? I've been trying for 11 hours to spawn a ship at Area 18.
server at launch where great, today though...i dont know what been going on 30k after 30k
I can't even spawn a ship ... so the only thing cooked are the servers..
if only they fixed the hangar doors not opening
When Vulkan came to NMS it was worse then OpenGL (hard to believe I know), but over time Vulkan became a lot better and is not the ONLY api afaik that NoManSky uses. It seems to take time to get Vulkan up to snuff and past.
performance is great, the bugs however....
Vulkan is badly broken for me, sadly. Prior builds it was very smooth with minor glitches, if I try now many textures don't seem to be loading. AMD RX6600xt.
Vulkan runs much better for me less stutters 6900xt 5900x
These black screens are horrible though
I've heard! Think CIG is hot fixing them as we speak.
@tenpoundfortytwo that would be swell!
Vulcan keeps crashing for me on compiling shaders. 5800x3d 4090.
❤️❤️❤️🎅🎅👀👀🎄🎄
8:34 May as well go for the 5090. I hear the 5080 is only marginally better than the 4080.
Is it playable on Ryzen 5700x3d and rtx 4070ti super? Will I get smooth 60fps at least?
Nope not happening game is too CPU bound for last gen X3D and too RAM bound for DDR4 even if you pushed it to fully tuned 4000 its curb stomped by even expo / xmp 6000
My 2080 ti is screaming for its life
Good job ! 😉 👍
Vulkan is a no go for me until they add hdr support, wonder when that is coming.
