2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, save states, or RNG manipulation
4. No evasion moves before level 100*
Rule details:

This is the main reason why I like that Norman has Vigoroth and Slaking. Normally I don't like when boss trainers have duplicate Pokemon, but it works in this case because it showcases how drastically different the two are. Heck, it feels like the game is telling the player that there's a genuine case to be made for preventing your Vigoroth from evolving.
Eviolite Vigoroth used to be one of my powerhouses because it was so hard to take down and still hit like a truck.
Legit felt like it should have been either the final evo or a standalone pokemon
@@ofox716 been playing some Adv NU lately, Vigoroth is a great mon. had eviolite been introduced in third gen, vigoroth might have been a top tier mon
Slaking is trash
In Gen 4 onwards, it is thanks to Powercreep. But, in Gen 3, it is not trash at all. It just needs serious confidence to use in tournaments and ladder.
@@sepg5084in competitive maybe since a skilled player can take advantage of its ability, but in story playthroughs it’s ridiculously overpowered and you’re just flat out wrong
The idea of vigaroth hating sleep so much that it won't even rest to heal up is hilarious
He's just like me fr
Vigoroth is inspired by a Ground Sloth, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's why it can learn Earthquake. If I had to guess, they probably didn't want to deal with Slaking being Truant underground which is why they don't let Vigoroth learn Dig.
On the thirteenth day of December, Scott's Thoughts gave to me:
A lively mid stage slashing
The Johto trio roaming
Surge's 'Chu with a competent trainer
Classy Cat v Pig Monkey!
A moonstone evolution
The "Rhydon of gen three"
A Pure Power powerhouse
Wattson's ace in Hoenn
'Phan v Ursaring!
A tiny turtle's bubble
The fire starter digging
A garden lizard's leech seed
And those three weirdo mons punching
I can't be the only person that actually goes out of my way to look for your comments
Always look forward to this
In the future for the E4, when playing a pokemon with a setup move using substitute can carry hard. Since 2 out of 4 members‘ first pokemon use protect on their first move and the other two like to use status moves, you can often set up a free substitute. Since the AI is really quirky with substitute, it often does not know what to do and might even use status moves on you. This can help some Pokémon to freely setup and sweep.
I reckon this could also be useful for Steven‘s Skarmory.
You can get substitute from a move tutor on the rooftop of
the Department Store in Lilycove.
That is what exactly what I have been screaming at Scott in the comments on other gen 3 videos
Just EQ, Return, Bulk Up Substitute would have been nearly guaranteed sweep against Steven
Isn’t there a famous Linoone sweep you can do based off of the fact that all Emerald Elite 4 and Wallace tend to not attack during the first turn? Substitute can definitely help during the Elite 4.
@@iantaakalla8180 yeah for sure. Mightyena likes to use status moves like Sand Attacn, Dusclop will Protect , Sealeo will set up Hail (which is w/e), Shellgon will Protect and Wailord will attack or set up Rain Dance. In many situations you can get a free substitute, after which you are immune to most forms of hax until they break it. In my experience, Substitute is also the key to most Battle Tower challenge runs.
I will headcanon the Slakoth line learning Earthquake as the impact of sloths falling out of trees.
I think secret power is a no-contact move, so it’s probably conditionally better than slash against static, flame body, cute charm etc… not sure if that comes up here but worth remembering.
Biggest moment for this would be against Watson. With the big question: Is there room on the move set? Or a different one: Is any of the moves needed in the near future? Because the move reminder still takes a while.
@nestrior7733 secret power is post watson unfortunately, on the way to fallarbour
@@tsawy6 I wasn't sure in the moment and didn't want to jump around the video. So yeah. Not available for the biggest point where it would be useful.
Bulk up, slack off, facade, and shadow ball is my ideal move set for Vigoroth
Sounds good
Vigoroth Doesn't get access to Slack off in this type of Run... You would have to evolve it from a Slakoth.
@@cameronneveu7277well that’s unfortunate
@@michaelballack3051get boatengd fam
@@cameronneveu7277 Since Slack Off is off-limits, maybe you can add Reversal for a desperation move of sorts. Or Protect + Leftovers.
19:10 Fun fact, the Teddiursa line, as of Gen 9, is the only one that can learn both lick and bulk up! 😂
I thought the Snubbull line and the Litten line could as well?
It’s going to be fun watching Scott playing through gens 4 and 5, the difficulty level in those games is such a spike from gen 3.
It's really not until the last Cyrus fight and Cynthia
@@Xeraser2depending on your solo run 'Mon, yeah, it actually is. Gardenia with two fully evolved Pokémon and a starter is crazy.
Vigoroth is surprisingly capable for a pre-evolution. It has high Speed, Attack, Defense, and a great movepool to use all of it. Great run.
I think a helpful addition for the Steven fight for Vigoroth is Substitute in combination with Leftovers. That way you can avoid Toxic as well as be able to have full setup with Bulk Up.
Substitute in general is great for the elire four too! Most start with status on turn one and Phoebe loves abusing status like will o wisp
I believe scott's reluctance to use sub strats is because it is locked behind a rival fight in front of the dept store and playing through so much gen 1, substitute is just too slow and expensive to get there, that's why even if it appears in the moveset he generally ignores it
@@shootingstardust97 Not to mention, Substitute in Gen 1 doesn't block that many things other than Confusion and Poison against Agatha. It does not block Sleep and Paralysis inducing moves. However, Stadium did gain the aforementioned blocking capabilities for Sleep and Paralysis.
A suggestion for the layout is to put the trainer items going down the side of their portrait, it could even gray out after it's been used. Keep up the great work!
I saw that Mewtwo rating the other day and had to go back and watch it.
Surprisingly, it makes sense for that rating.
Love how this lil guy can learn Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, and Blizzard, but Scott is so hung up on Earthquake.
Thanks for the upload Scott, I love having these videos for the slow parts of my day 🦥
One option for people that are color blind is to have a link the overlay that has annotations of each value, basically a key/legend to a map. Love the content! Keep up the amazing work!
I kinda understand Slaking's truant. He's got stats that can make legendaries balk. So he's gotten so arrogant that he doesn't try.
Man, Scott. I’m dreading tomorrow’s playthrough for you. An entire game with the Truant ability? Sheesh. Good luck!
Vigoroth is my favorite middle evolution of all time.
It was my first fully EV'd trained Pokémon with Max HP and Attack with Careful Nature and it took care of business in the E4! XD
GameFreak: *Ruins Slaking with a terrible ability to cripple it so that it’s not outright broken
Also GF: *creates Ursaluna 20 years later
Since you mentioned concern with UI readability for colorblind people - something you could experiment with is using simple patterns with the colored backgrounds. Doesn't have to be complicated or anything, you could just have a second complementary tone, like maybe a darker and lighter green, and then arrange each of those in a unique pattern. Like maybe HP has zigzags, Attack has a checkerboard pattern, Defense has houndstooth, etc. The individual patterns are almost irrelevant, save for them being unique to each stat but shared between the player's stats (which have labels) and the opponent's (which do not).
You can modify your color scheme to display different colors for every type of colorblindness. You can find these tools to check for accessibility online
What that means is that a tool can be used to check for ease of access for all kinds of color blindness
I think it’s just a mistake to delete encore, it’s incredibly good into the entire elite 4 and a good portion of the rest of the game. Locking something like drakes Shelton into protect lets you easily set up to +6 with bulk up and one shot everything with return in every fight
Also I could be wrong but brick break breaks screens before damage calculation so you could have knocked out claydol with return and when the aggron came out brick break would still break screens and then probably one shot the aggron as well. But that mechanic might be from later gen so again I could be wrong there
Great video as always I love how much information you give and display on screen during these runs keep it up ❤
Buying time through discussing U.I. development, love it~
Finally someone else acknowledges how short Wally's theme is. It goes hard for like 30 seconds and that's it.
My mother used to play this game a lot, she always used Vigoroth and managed to win battles against actual humans with it. It was wild.
Great to see Vigoroth getting some love finally!
Just wanted to mention something I've seen in your Emerald videos; I think with runs in the future when you get to Tate and Liza, you should consider which of Xatu/Claydol is more problematic for your solo mon and gear your strategy to take that one out first. A lot of times you're setting up against the leads anyway (bulk up strats, at least). In this run you are infinitely more threatened by the xatu after the first turn, as the Claydol is going to do nothing with repeat EQs, meanwhile Xatu is setting up on the special side. I think you can be more consistent with this, especially if you are using Bulk Up specifically. I understand the urge to get AP boosts off the table, but when your lead isn't threatened at all by it, I think you can afford to pivot towards a different strategy. Just some food for thought, great run as always!
Slaking is one of my top 5 pokemon so im excited for tomorrow. I used to use one at my locals with a Cofagrigus in gen 6. Its funny to watch people react when he doesn't have truant.
Really good playthrough despite Vigoroth's middling stats! Shows how broken getting Bulk Up in the early game is. Looking forward to seeing how Slaking compares tomorrow!
My favorite move set for Vigoroth is Slash, Bulk Up, Yawn and Slack Off. Of course this requires leveling up a Slakoth, but aside from being walled by ghosts, this move set is forever sustainable given you don’t run out of pp. You can also substitute Slash for any physical move of your choosing. One of my favorite Pokemon
Imagine bulking up then using Lick with this giant, muscular tongue dealing massive damage lmao
I don't know really *why* I did this but back in the day when the game first came out and I had the Prima guide I felt compelled to put off the evolution into Vigoroth until Slakoth learned Covet. For some reason I was so excited for a move like Thief that also had 40 PP, I would run around with Linoone that also knew it and this thing and just use it on everything to stockpile any held items that I could get.
A pokemon having Vital Spirit is the only way to Scott dont use Rest.
items can be an icon below the team or share space with the trainer name.
Changing the boarders on your display could use the same/similar space while compensating for colorblindness.
Such as, def angled sides and a flat bottom and top, sp. def angled sides with wavy bottom top, or something similar. (__) and [__] and {__} are visually distinct enough too to try and get some mileage out of. I do not think your icons below the pokemon that hold their stats need to be changed, however you will probably end up trying to make them visually consistent, which I respect.
The held item could be an icon (of the oran berry in this case at Roxanne, 6:10) could go in the lower right hand corner of the pokemon image and then either disappear or fade out when used. A similar thing can be used for the trainer items. A lot of items in game have icons, some from future generations, that you could probably use for these images. It could get crowded, but I think you can manage a balance somehow.
Vigoroth is amazing. Definitely one of the more underrated mons out there.
Also, you need to do second play through for the starters, they’re all so poorly ranked it’s hilarious 😂
You know, one of the greatest boons to Vigoroth is the move slack off. It's interesting that Vigoroth is not programmed to learn this move via level up in Gen 3, since the only reason I'd imagine Game Freak not copying Slakoth's moves onto Vigoroth's level up set is there being a wild Vigoroth encounter, and Game Freak wanting kids to train a Slakoth if they want the best Vigoroth. But, for the life of me, I can't remember there being any such encounter. The only trainers I can remember with Vigoroth on their team are in Norman's gym, and I'm pretty sure they have custom move sets.
I prefer the Wally fight in Ruby and Sapphire. He's not stronger, but instead of fighting him at the beginning of Victory road, you fight him at the end. If you don't know it's coming he can totally ambush a weakened team, and it's a mean little trick the game plays.
For the layout, consider putting enemy pokemon stats in the same arrangement as your pokemon. That consistency, combined with the fact that you have the stat names on your pokemon should make it clearer - you'd probably need to move enemy moves to be a similar layout to your pokemon as well to make it fit.
I know you specialize in solo runs, but I'd love to see you picking three specific Pokemon and running them through a game.
Which would mean managing levels between them which balances the coverage.
So an example would be typhlosian, ampharos and sandslash.
All in all great content! Loving being able to look forward to a vid from you I can have on as I get home and do my house jobs
Nice job for a first playthrough! I'm excited to see how you do with Slaking
Eviolite Vigoroth is not the worst thing in the world for casual play.
Pretty bulky and fast, with alright base attack and Bulk Up. So yeah, not bad.
I checked on it and you weren't kidding about Wally's theme. It makes me regret not following the later gens.
Vigoroth’s lack of ability to use Rest is definitely a hindrance. Good thing that in later generations, Vigoroth can learn Drain Punch. Unfortunately, while it COULD learn Slack off via its pre-evolution, later generations would reduce its PP from 10 to 5.
Crazy that the credit roll is up to the Gen 5 legendaries.
Vigoroth is my favourite middle-stage, and my favourite Hoenn Pokémon!
"last a little bit longer against Roxane" haha.
Loving all the content drops!
"It can’t keep still because its blood boils with energy. It runs through the fields and mountains all day to calm itself. If it doesn’t, it can’t sleep at night."
bro had a little too much ❄ that's why it can learn ice moves
Man, I’d like to see how well he’d do if he had an eviolite. Sadly that doesn’t pop up till gen V.
Another pre evolved Pokémon that got graced by the Eviolite utility, even in it's origin game Vigoroth was a pleasure to use but in Gen 5 it's an absolute unit, boosting those defenses by 50% with access to Bulk Up goes crazy especially because it's speed tier isn't even that bad just 1 below the average of great Pokémon
Great video dude!
The vigoroth run looks like "just use return. If that doesnt work, just use bulk up one more time." and then you get to steven stone and cry.
Speaking of Wally in the remakes, have you seen his post battle frontier streak team from ORAS? It’s monstrous, full competitive team with items and evs. Probably one of the best NPC teams ever, from one of the worst trainers. Really have him a glow up.
6:43 You are confused that Vigoroth can learn Earthquake but cannot learn Rock Tomb. Vigoroth can learn ROCK SLIDE (from the FireRed/LeafGreen/Emerald tutor) but not Rock Tomb.
I have to wonder how a Vigoroth that evolved from Slakoth would do since then you'd have access to Slack Off, granted then you'd have to deal with Slakoth till level 18
I stan this evolution line but due to growth rate, Roxanne and probable problems with Wattson's Magneton, I'm not expecting much. Crossing fingers for my boy though!
Its pretty clear to me why this Pokemon can learn earthquake. its a warning that this Pokemon is gonna be dominantly powerful in the future.
Ooh no rest for Scott today! Your favorite TM is gone!
Thanks Scott!
I’ve heard elsewhere how Slaking and Regigigis have very similar stats that I guess they both have bad sides
I probably would have kept Return over Brick Break. Also, you should listen to Wally's theme from Pokemon Masters EX
You’re spoiling us!! 🥰
I am really happy. Gen 4 has some big power spikes, that i hope to see how they are handled. Gyrados in the rain, bastiodon with metal burst, snow cloak frostlass, cranidos, Purugly, Skuntank.
I remember getting a Vigoroth as a kid when playing Emerald and it just sweeping all other Pokémon. Vigoroth was one of those Pokémon who stood out to me much like Absol, Aggron, Cradily, and Salamence(favorite) did. Fond memories of this mon, and I always give Vigoroth an Everstone, because I really dislike the Truant ability. Yes, I am missing out on the powa that is Slaking, but couldn't really care lol.
But on a sidenote; there IS a recovery move Vigoroth could learn, but only if you evolved it from a Slakoth: Slack-off. But as stated, you'd have to raise a Slakoth all the way to a Vigoroth, which would take a while. Which I think Slakoth evolves at either 18 or 20?
Vigoroth is a Pokemon I've used in Emerald, Alpha Sapphire, and Violet, and it's definitely a bit underpowered, but it has a good movepool and some fun tactics at its disposal. Probably one of the most useful middle stage Pokemon ever? in Violet it can benefit from the Eviolite, even. I used it in my Normal playthough, but made an oopsie and evolved it when I had intended to utilize its Vital Spirit ability to counter a sleep-inducing bastard. Slaking was...not as good, even with its monstrous stats. It is faster than you think it is, though, lol. You expect it to be as slow as Snorlax, but it absolutely is not. still, Truant makes it miserable to use, which we'll probably see in action tomorrow. Overall I would say Vigoroth averages out to be much better, for not having Truant and instead having an ability that blocks sleep. No Rest, granted, but Vigoroth doesn't want to rest.
12:50 Vigoroth's claw structure would be suitable for gashing, but not so much for digging. You ever try to make a person sized hole with a sickle before?
Vigoroth actually gets slack off, which is the same as recover, from the Slakoth stage if you weren’t starting with it already evolved
I just realized that Swablu CAN theoretically be used to set up on if you use Taunt. However, you need to have Winona's badge to unlock the ability to get the TM and most of the Pokémon that learn it by level-up either wouldn't have a problem beating her anyway or can't learn any setup moves. _Maybe_ Poochyena, but I'm not sure it can tank Aerial Aces long enough to get reasonably set up with Howl.
If I'm correct you can encore lock enemy pokemon, so you could tell the brawly's machop to keep bulking up
Just a minor thing I noticed about the Brawly fight. You didn't really need to risk betting it all on that last crit on the machop. When you're faster than the opponent and have already encored them into a useless move, you can just use encore again right when it ends to keep them trapped in it until they run out of power points. Chaining encore is basically free setup to +6 on pokemon who use useless moves (when you're faster and have a setup move, of course).
I don't think two separate tier list would be smart. This will start influencing your decisions and you will optimize to finish the league faster, messing up your Steven prep
How does Wattson always get static to trigger? He must be rubbing his electric doggos together before battle to build up a charge
I use this routing when I do RSE solo. I don't like to get Return until after Winona, with exceptions inc. Watson->Fallarbor->Meteor Falls->Maville->Maxie->G4 immediately->G5 immediately
If need extra levels, I can battle trainers btw Watson and my next Maville visit. I can also collect more items, especially the Persim Berries, or get more money to buy Game Corner stuff earlier.
Vigoroth is such a powerful Pokémon for nuzlockes, with a lot of ways to safely set up and sweep most fights, it's a little disappointing how low it ended up on the tier list but the slow growth rate is very rough.
Looking forward to next vid then.
The tongue is made out of muscles, after all... Though bulking up those ones specifically does sound a bit difficult.
I guess the sloth jumps down from the tree and causes an earthquake :)?
Wally used to be a better challenge in RS compared to Emerald. Moving him from the end of Victory Road to the start puts your team in much better health.
Probably doesn't matter too much, but because you're 2-hitting anyway with Uproar early on, you might as well have been using Scratch since it has less text boxes. Uproar will display an extra "It's causing an uproar".
I wished that they had made Wally the champion . It’s so annoying to fight a water gym , a water/ice elite 4 , and a water champion. It would’ve been a nice call back to gen 1 as well
Idk how I’ve never noticed before, and I don’t remember if you’ve said before you probably have and I’ve just forgotten cause I watch them all. I heard a lot of words in this video where you have to be Canadian though. Lol!
I am Canadian.
That is impressive 👏
It might be worth explaining how you choose which of Norman’s gym trainers to fight. Are there consistent fast ones, or do you decide on the fly whether you’re more afraid of X Attack or Dire Hit?
I remember one time I made a haunchcrow that had super luck, night slash, and the item that raises critical hits.
it pretty much crit everytime
Always a great job...
I have a question that I find interesting and if you haven't thought of it I think you'd find it interesting...
What is... Slakoth... was asleep... then evolved... while asleep... to vigaroth with vital spirit... does it wake up first turn? Does it wake up normally? Does the game freak out?
Super unfortunate it doesn't get access to Slack Off
I learned today, shell bell OP held item
Some comments on your Overlay:
First and foremost choosing a color blind friendly palette is very important. I would try and look up an existing swatch with many colors on it, and then ask some color blind people if they can see the differences easily enough.
Next you could consider only using pictures to represent held items, because they all have official artwork. It's not a perfect solution but it could be placed slightly overlapping the pokémon sprites in the overlay.
And finally to better convey information with symbols; consider adding a partially transparent texture as a repeating pattern in the colors. Like the symbol for normal type over a beige to indicate normal.
They're not perfect solutions but they may be helpful in getting you started.
You can use rest on vigoroth . It's actually really good he heals then is awake next turn.
I think I would have kept Shadow Ball for the Claydol, but I guess the Claydol didn't do much due to Brick Break always destroying its shields.
I believe Focus energy takes away all the drawbacks to Focus Punch much like how Defense Curl Doubles the Power of Rollout. However, I don't remember if it's permanent as long as their out, or it requires extra uses of the move to keep allow you to have turn one flinch less Focus Punches.
Focus Energy doesn't do this, sadly!
It would be interesting to see a run like this with and without eviolite to see if it makes much of a difference
Eviolite is a Gen 5 item.
Oh man, I LOVE Slaking but I wonder if the solo playthrough is even possible due to truant.
Don't let scott know about shadow sneak and shadow claw 💀
Shoutout to Juan for being a member of the Dapper Gents Club alongside Pryce 😁
Love Vigoroth! Why no Substitute + Bulk Up, though? (I'd suggest Taunt, but to get it you need to beat the Trick House more times and that'd eat time)
Perhaps Bulk Up, Substitute, Brick Break, and Earthquake with Leftovers?
Vers roxanne encore might have been a good move use scratch till it rolls defence curl then force it to use it 2-5 turns in a row
I think the reason vigoroth doesn't get dig is because it evolves into slaking, and how would that even interact with truant? Are you underground for 2 turns making it a 3 turn dig? Does he dig up on his slacking turn? It was probably easier to just not give him the move instead of doing a bunch of coding for edge cases like this. Makes me wonder what happens if you hack in dig on his moveset
You could go for Focus Energy 2 times. Then, you should have a 50% crit chance instead of a 25% one.
Despite raising the crit chance modifier stage, Focus Energy can’t stack.
