Im currently in hs and works at mcdonalds and it has in fact shown me precious lecons about life and it also has shown me the value of hard work and has helped me in my personnal life so basicaly mcdonalds is life heil trump and heil capitalism

True, but there is a very important distinction to be made here. When you pay for college, yes, you are a "customer" of that institution financially speaking. However, the entire point of paying tuition is to provide oneself with the opportunity to obtain a degree from that college through hard work and learning. Sadly, many college students today believe that as "customers" they are owed a degree straight away because they've paid the money to go to the college in the first place. I mean, if you're already paying for the degree, why should you have to put in all of that effort to get it too? Amirite? /s

Well said 😊 my 15 year old daughter started at McDonald's in November of last year. I have seen her grow so much. She has PTSD and struggles with panic arracks. But at work, she has found her voice and independent spirit again. She is getting stronger and more resilient. She will be 16 in October and the store manager is promoting her to Crew Trainer. It is a guaranteed promotion. I am definitely proud of her and thankful she started pushing to work She took the initiative to apply to work and working at McDonalds has been a blessing.
John, if you are serious with that, you have obviously never worked retail. Customers can come up with the most Obnoxious complaints and yell at you, although you are in absolutely no place to solve their problem, which oftenly, they themselves have put in.

I worked retail for 2 1/2 years and hated it. I learned quickly how ugly people can be, but it also taught me how I should treat people, especially those working these thankless jobs. Knowing what I know now though, I will never work in retail again, or even the food industry.
His Dudeness I too work retail and hate it. Shop has taught me how ugly some people are and how numerous ugly customers are. I am first an artist before a saleswoman. I miss painting while I work in my mother's shop. My mother needs me for muscle work. I expect to leave shop in few years time and return to painting.

Not only did I have snobby customers to put up with, I had the manager's clique dumping their jobs onto me whilst they filled their time gossiping about me and everyone else on earth. Same here. It made me wonder, if there's any way of improving the situation of those working in retail or food industry. Because well, as low as the salary is, this kinda job really can make someone straight-up hate life or other people, if they stay there for a little too long. And it's the fault of the customers and higher management alike, not just the earnings in these jobs, BS things that people in other fields don't have to deal with.
Well, in today's colleges you're right. However, it use to be that you were a pupil--and college use to be rough. And, this is why we have a record number of people graduating college today who still can't read. That would have never happened 50 years ago. You wouldn't have even been able to enter.

It is not the university's job to teach students how to handle life. It is the university's job to provide students with skills and knowledge needed for a profession. It is the parents' job to teach their children how to handle life. If the parent doesn't do that (as mine didn't), the onus is on the individual to figure it out. The "poor me" attitude doesn't lead to maturity, productivity, or making the world a better place in any way.
When my alma matter called me up for a donation 20 years after my graduation, I told them they did not teach me how to succeed in life. Bill Gates once said that the Politically Correct education that kids are getting in school does nothing to teach them to succeed in life.

So lets say you happen to afford it, but know it will be a struggle for you. If you start out and you do try, but still fail, then that is going to suck for you. Not only did you waste all your money, but also wasted your time even though you tried. There is no "trying" in college. You either succeeded or you didn't. And if you didn't, you are seen as stupid. So it doesn't matter if you can't do it. You have to, or else it will be harder to get a job. Because the US values ANY degree more than no degree. Amen! My stepmom forbid me from work. "Students job is to study" but their upbringing didn't prepare me for Jack shit in life. At 20 mid 2nd year of college (energetics engineering) left her authoritarian BS, Was forced to be father of my own heavily depressed mom, and commute via train to work and study. In the end it was too much, got dropped out, but mom is back on track, got a stable job, moved together with GF, weathered the lockdowns despite both working in hospitality, and still better off than the regular paycheck to paycheck people. Learned to take care of my loved ones and hold my ground, keep improving every single day. You are blessed for having the upbringing with the right values, cherish them and your 'privilege' (whatever the F those numbskulls did with the meaning) will provide ample soil for success that gives back to the community. Been there done that. I got yelled at for not finding something the way that the boss wanted me to find it. I was looking for the number within the category, he wanted me to find it based on the colour coding. He yelled at me, for going to the bathroom too much. (I'm sorry but once a day, for 3 minutes is not too much. He gossiped about our performance to fellow employees. (He kept gossiping to me that other employee was a bad worker but only complained to her about arbitrary stuff, never what he really thought.) He would say "Don't you think that sometimes "insert emplyee name here* is bitchy sometimes? If you'd agree, that sometimes everyone can be bitchy, he would go to that employee and say "Do you know what *insert name of other employee here* said about you? He was a micro-managing, power hungry, gossiping asshole. But I looked for other jobs. School bullies were worse because you can't get away from them.

Jon S True, but as adults, we have more life experience and self esteem to handle bullies. Children do not handle these situations as well simply due to lack of life experience. We have social skills that allow us to deal with the bully whereas children don't. Studies have proven that these things affect children much worse than adults. Not to say that workplace bullies are fun; they aren't. They are godawful, but at least we as adults have coping mechanisms. I may not have liked working under 2 bullies, but I have made the best of it, and learned something from them. :) Even if it's only how not to manage people. I also took some of their criticisms, and tried to do better, which has helped me in my career. School bullies tend to attack the person. Adult bullies tend to attack the insignificant aspects of your job because attacking you would get them in trouble.

I would only quible a bit with end. "Put others first." This is bad advice. Put others first but always recognize when it is in your best interest to do so. Being polite to your customers is not the end goal. Gaining their patronage, and therefore your profit is. In short, we help others so we may help ourselves.
@elgostine, I spent my time shooting and being shot at. Of all the people that I served with I don't know anyone with long term effects from the war. Myself, I was a bit shell shocked for a year or two. People call that PTSD these days but it was never something that drastically effected my life. I prefer the old fashioned term shell shock because that more apply describes what it really was. If a car back fired or I heard a lowed noise I'd jump. Then the episode was over just as quick as it came. Literally a friction of a second 7 or 8 times a year. That's it. These days I have no lasting effects and no one that I personally know does. I served. I did my duty and did my job. Looking back it was no different than going to work at McDonald's, only rather than serving burgers my job was to neutralize enemy targets. If that sounds harsh or mean to someone oh well, perhaps they will be the ones to suffer. It doesn't change the facts. For my part I learned more about life and myself. Despite the tragedy of war I am better for having served and better prepared for life than I would have been if i hadn't.
One of the biggest things I have noticed among the people I know who belong to SJW movements, is it seems they lack an experience fundamental to a servant attitude you speak of: belonging to a team. Their focus on protecting their own self interests only at the expense of others is something that one learns not to do in putting a team first. I noticed this trend through observing the very different thought process between them, and those I had the privelege of serving in the army with. Most of us grew up playing sports, and then underwent a gruelling process of training for combat with each other, to learn how to act, not out of self preservation or self interest, but for the success of the team. We put the mission before our own lives. And sadly, some never returned home because of this. But we learned that life is more than just ourselves. It is about something bigger than us, and being a part of that. These kids crave a sense of belonging. And with that lack of experience, be it through sports, or even a job, which less and less kids experience before university each year, how can they possibly gain that sense of belonging? By turning to social justice movements, that advocate the same ideals as them. The only ones they have ever known: their own self interests above all else. They seek to make an impact, and find a social team to be a part of, but haven't learned the importance of putting the team first. And sadly, they will never truly understand that that very quality, is what will exclude them from ever landing a job where they can belong and make an impact.

i remember when i used to play soccer from 8 to 10 years old until i got a medical condition that made me have to abandon soccer forever. But one thing we could see, most of the times that our team lost, was becase some jerk wanted to be THE ONE who scores the goal, not wanting to work as a team and sacrifice their own pride of scoring a goal, and then our team most of the times lost because of selfishness of one of our own. Soccer, or any other collective sport, teaches you better than 4 years of university where you unlearn. You learn to work as a team, to put the others before yourself to the greater good of the group, to recognize when you are not good enough and only slows the team down, therefore you will have to work to improve yourself and be able to help your team. While in college, they say that people have "rights" that they don't, call a fair thing like giving more money to the best employeers (an unequal fairness) is selfish, say "the right for this and the right for that" and calls the duty "a violation of your rights", and feed a sense of "me first" on young people. I'm 22 and i'm ashamed of being in this "me first" generation. Put your kid on soccer, basketball, voleyball and it will teach your kid a sense of resposability and putting others beforre himself/herself better than college.

Just tell them all to remember: There's no I in Denial. Millenial story essay below: - My supervisor is literally the dumbest person I have ever met. He's in charge of making tactical decisions that effect everyone, and in some cases, actual safety. He has a reputation of taking things personally and has a huge ego, so if he were to deliberately break a safety rule for convenience and I were to see it and go above his head, and I'm typically right, he'd be pissed off but unable to retaliate other than with words. He'll go for 20 minutes before noticing something I've noticed, but if I tell him, I run the risk of being insulted/shouted down for that insult. Not to worry however: - His wife recently left him- because he's a L O S E R. Not intelligent at all. He had a speeding ticket about a year ago. He claims he went in to pay it with cash and did, then a year later, he was pulled over and arrested/fined for having a suspended license for not paying it. He claims they forgot that he paid the ticket. (And yet he didn't keep a receipt.) As such, he lost a lot of money and nearly his job as he needed to rideshare to work for a time as he awaited trial. (10 PM to 4 AM shift. 40 minute drive, hard for mass transport, eh.) He had a lot of debt that his wife left over, which I found out was from medical expenses. When he's worked at a job for around 10 years that provides Insurance free of charge. The best insurance on the market. He somehow managed to put medical debt on his credit card, metaphorically, despite having amazing insurance that'd cover anything from root canal to bone marrow transplant. Then, his paychecks started getting garnished, so he's basically in poverty despite making $7-8 an hour or so more than me. He's now also paying child support. None of this is his fault, but on others or on circumstance, as he seems to think. Still smokes, still admits to 'getting trashed' over July 4th weekend and not preparing for work and suffering physical consequences, smokes weed and cigarettes and does energy drinks, used to do meth- is still the worst supervisor and probably the worst person I've ever met. An absolute millennial by the definition.
At University You learn "book smarts" You do not learn "life skills" In College you may learn to be a Doctor or Teacher, but you do not learn how to be a Good one!
In college or not, it is YOU who chooses what to learn, be it life skills or book smarts, such as quantum physics, for example (can't learn that in McDonald's). It's all about YOUR choices. Don't try to blame others for YOU not learning something from them. Ask questions, if you need to.
@Donald Bauman I haven't completed my degree myself, but it would have been nice to have one due to employers often requiring to have one. After I immigrated, I went into a completely different field and became a professional in it. I learned from the internet, from the books, and on the job. As I said in my other comment, everybody learns differently. Some learn better in college, while others learn better on their own -- there is no right or wrong here.
But a college is supposed to be training you for the workforce. However, they are doing a poor job by coddling students when they need to learn to take care of themselves. I graduated from a university and I learned very little that actually applies to my job. I mostly just needed that certification that came with it.
While there are some students who go to college on mom and dads money and don't care about actually getting a career after. If I am paying for my own college, I want the college to prepare me for my chosen career even if that means teaching tough "life lessons" however, colleges are not only failing to teach life lessons but actually teaching the complete opposite making a college degree worthless in the working world. If you going to college just to learn then this model is fine but if you look at college as an investment in your career then college needs to kick some butt.

Actually, there is much material in many fields, including social sciences that requires quite a bit of immersion in you about the subjects that don't overlap much with daily life at all. I've actually made bad comments about stuff like this before, so don't think I'm hating on you. However, I've heard some peoples' examples of "life lessons", and they really aren't very conducive to learning academic material in the first place. Especially since when you are studying much of this stuff you are required to get away from "life" anyway to be immersed in an environment of academic education to avoid useless distraction which might make the learning less efficient. Nobody tell Donald Trump's son that he has "relied on his daddy too much", are they? lol
People are getting wrong this video (and maybe this girl too): This is a clear message to the universities around the world to teach the right things, include more practical lessons in order to not be overwhelmed by the world, people in general don't care about the employees at all, so you have to remain professional and cool; however though, this doesn't mean that you have to tolerate all those kinds of treatment. Of course, you won't talk back to a customer or start crying like a baby for every time they hurt your feelings, especially if you were actually wrong, and if someone catcalls you (you could actually complain about that if it happens frequently, even leave, mcdonalds isn't the only employer of the world), you can be firm and tell them to leave, without making a ruckus. I really like this comment. That was one of my concerns about this video; the fact that it sorta implies that you should tolerate all kinds of negative treatment and that you should be a sandbag to the world if you want a job. I kinda feel as though this video would have benefited from being worked on more to clear up any confusion. Since I like PragerU's other videos, mainly the one about Modern Art. Then again, I guess the thing is that I'm likely missing out how a snowflake/SJW/whatever may react. The catcall thing, if it were to happen to me, I would just ignore it if it was a one-time occurrence or just calmly, and professionally, tell them to stop. Yes indeed, univeristies should include much more practice in real business life ( including food chains like McD) situations instead of teaching only theory. but I guess teachers and other employees at universities need to defend their salaries somehow.

Two jobs I hate: fastfood & retail. And guess what? I work on both at the same time. A thing a learn: "customers are not friends, so do not engage with them as such, just go to the point and don't be expressly or give a detailed explanation over things". Never have a relationship inside the job. It never ends wells. Never and ever. Which job is the worse: retail. - Your hours are subject to performance (credit card applications & surveys, both that aren't totally under your control but customer choice), they are always changing the environment of work from within and out struggling to compete vs other competitors and the seasons. They always cut hours unless you're the last resort for the time being. They always do their best to stick with the budget vs the demand of customers flow and taxation. People's returns are a mess and uncontrolled, and they have a sense of brutal entitlement to everything even without receipts or beyond the time of return policy. Coupons are as misleading as the sale signs. And like it or not, if you demonstrate you are a great potential chances are that you will be left alone working being the last cashier who has to wait endlessly for a brake. Fastfood is better. Your hours are always flat, depending on your availability. You're always needed. There's always lot to do but you don't need to sell credit cards or take people's e-mails or phone numbers to proceed. So revenue is subject to people' hunger and sugar-carbs cravings satisfaction. There's no "returns", just sometimes refund or a wrong order, nothing else and the managers handles that, not you. And here and there often you get free food if not discounted already. Free drinks too. If you can work fast and master your skills, you'll do way better off in fastfood over retail. Period.
Retail companies are crap. I worked for Sears at their Repair Center after dropping out. They wanted to push ridiculous numbers in a timely yet efficient manner but they were to an extent unreasonable resulting in frequent worker turnaround.
I worked both fast food and retail and retail was preferable. The retail job treated me like an actual human being with feelings and the customers were more friendly. Also the retail job made sure that people got breaks and days off, which the fast food job did not.

They have opportunities for those trying to become software developers and they help pay for your college. Loyalty is all they ask of you. Start from the trenches and work your way up the ladder.
If you go to a university or college, take Law, Engineering, Computer Science, Health Science, Accounting, or Trades. Anything else is a waste of your time and money and you're better off building your career from first a low wage job.

Disagree. A liberal arts education is good for its own sake. It won't get you a job, but if you ask me colleges shouldn't always be place-holders for a job-training program. One should go to college to become educated, not necessarily to become trained.
The givornment should stop funding student loans for degrees in jobless fields. It's only creating cronyism in these colleges because it incentivizes them to teach dependance on the state, leading to the students voting for more govt spending on colleges in a feedback loop.
I have a one word answer to that: STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. You mentioned a couple of forms of hard science, but left others out. You didn't mention math at all.
Our parents (I'm 34 in a week) told us that we could do anything, and that saying otherwise was "too negative" etc. When my son tells us he wants to play basketball, we say "There's a very small number of people who do that for a living, and they work extremely hard to get to that level. If you are going to have a dream, you must be willing to work very hard to achieve it, and, even then, your dream may not work out." I could've never imagined my mother saying that.

Haverford should be really embarrassed by this. I learned a lot at McDonald's, but it didn't come close to what I learned in college. Of course, I had to major in a field wth job prospects and that meant lots of math. I am continually shocked by how little some fields require for a degree.

Well, experience is the best teacher. I worked for Kroger for more than two decades, and it made me more conscientious about treating retail employees well when I was the one shopping or dining out. We were told that if we HAD to vent our feelings about a stressful situation or a douchebag, we could only do it from the depths of the walk-in freezer. I learned about discretion, because no one likes or trusts a gossiper. If we all put ourselves first, the company would collapse. Regarding college, academic resources (like tutoring) should be available for those who will make good use of it, and new students should be made aware of those resources. But 'putting your own well-being first' is an instruction that can easily be misconstrued, especially for those whose only responsibility till then has been completing high school. Many, myself included, had lived a fairly sheltered life. I'd had no siblings to look after, and the only money I'd earned was from babysitting. I wasn't spoiled, but I had little life experience and I did have to deal with social anxiety. I graduated high school in '89, long before the 'everyone gets a trophy' mentality and identity politics and the Safe Space Culture. Which is just as well, because I doubt those things would have helped me to mature.
I worked at kroger. Was the best and worst experience of my life. Best in that I learned how to approach people, worst in that I made minimum wage and had terribly inconsistent hours. I don't regret it in the least, but wouldn't return. Learned my lesson. xD
I found whenever I felt tempted to lash out at douchebag customers it was best to make myself cold and emotionally distant. Not the ideal way to normally act with customers, but it was preferable to getting into a major verbal confrontation which would more likely get me fired.

University's role is to qualify someone for their future roles. It is to teach them skills so as to not be a sinkhole to society. The entire education system is designed to give people the knowledge required to become a member of the work force. Teaching someone how to kick and scream whenever someone disagrees with them is not something that will help them fulfill their future roles, unless that role is a SJW on welfare benefits. Most business owners prefer someone who doesn't get 'triggered' at every word. Most business owners prefer someone who works gets their work done efficiently and effectively. Most business owners prefer someone who is willing and able to make sacrifices towards the benefit of the business. University is not meant to be teaching people to do the exact opposite of what a business needs. Education is to give one the ability to be the worker, to be a employee or employer of a business, to be someone who will provide economic benefits throughout their careers by fulfilling their roles and paying taxes. Teaching someone how to be a consumer is both redundant and detrimental to the workplace.
I agree with everything up to the last point. If you go your entire life worrying about other people you will get to your "destination" in life and realize that it isn't what you thought it would be and that it took you entirely too long to get there. The people I've known that give are happy to do so, but live miserable lives because they do so. Charity is the spice of life, but taking will ALWAYS be the meat and veggies. It's not a nice sentiment but it's the reality of the world we live in.

Well students in a way, are customers. Not employee's. Schools are just way too over sensitive, nowadays, but it doesn't change the fact that you have to pay a butt load of money, just to have an opportunity that's not even guaranteed. (I.e failing hard classes)
I've thought of this before, but I kind of forgot about it over time. Yes, those jobs that require you to put a common goal before yourself have definitely taught me a lot. I worked in a factory, a department store, a bar, tutored and various other jobs. The character building definitely helped me become who I am today. Today I am an engineer for a major company with good pay, great benefits and lots of oportunity to grow. The jobs I did while in school definitely helped me be able to hold my own and deal with people which I attribute to my success. Great video, I always respect service industry people for the challenges and stress they deal with daily.

This is a very good summary of real life, from someone who had to handle her challenges, and move forward with her personal development despite them. She "grew" into a professional - and adult - based on character-developing experiences and tough situations. My own experiences at a grocery store and elsewhere were similar. Good stuff.
I showed my 17 year old nephew this video . He works at Pizza Hut in Whittier Ca. He told me that working for Pizza Hut for 8mths he has learned to see the world in a whole different way and it made him a better person. He said , he feels more mature and has met all kinds of different people. Its made him more understandable and observant to different situations good or bad .

You are well on your way to maturity. Working in places like McDonalds can be tough, but both of my daughters did and they, like you grew from it. As you will see when you get into the real world of work doing what the company hired you to do, within reason, is what you need to do. You will have the right to quit and get another job, but the principle is the same everywhere. I remember when I was being interviewed for a scholarship at Haverford. I said I was going to pursue a physics or applied math major. They wound up giving the scholarship to an English major who had a more tan complexion and happened to be a member of the lgbtq community. I wound up going to johns hopkins only to be confronted with apathetic professors and a bunch of socialist Chinese kids who come directly from China and have a ridiculous amount of wealth. College is shit. Pursue a career in a blue collar job.
My first job ever was at my local McDonalds, and as a college student myself this video intrigued me. I remember being one of only 3 people working one night, while everyone else, all 23 staff members, were outside smoking during a dinner rush. However, I didn't complain or bend to the pressure. I just kept working. I accepted that their behavior would not be a cause to my own. I had a job to do, working 3-7 hours after high school, and I was going to do it. I only lasted 3 months because I began failing math, but I am grateful for the experience. It was a little taste of the working world, and a reminder as to why I am in college in the first place. But it also taught the valuable lesson that I am not the only person in the world, and when you take up a job, your feelings are no logner relevant, only the customer's is.
I was a McDonalds crew kid in high school and college. In my considered opinion, it is quite possibly the best first job or training ground to prepare yourself for a professional career. The owner of the store took me under his wing and taught me more about the way business works and how to manager a diverse group of people than I learned in college or any other job since. McDonalds can be an amazing path to success if you are willing to learn the lessons available to you.
This is true. Working in the service industry prepare you alot more character wise than attending classes at college. You learn to empathise with the people behind the counter and become a more pleasant person because of it. Also you learn social skills like conflict resolve and communication that college doesn't teach. I think everyone should at one point in their life work in the servie industry to understand how hard it can be and how much self restraint you need to do it.

Love this when you are expected to be accountable it motivates you and your thinking. I worked at a large Retailer for over a decade years ago and I still draw on the training and critical thinking, problem solving skills I had to learn to manage people, products and customers. Invaluable lessons.

True, but there is a very important distinction to be made here. When you pay for college, yes, you are a "customer" of that institution financially speaking. However, the entire point of paying tuition is to provide oneself with the opportunity to obtain a degree from that college through hard work and learning. Sadly, many college students today believe that as "customers" they are owed a degree straight away because they've paid the money to go to the college in the first place.

Well said 😊 my 15 year old daughter started at McDonald's in November of last year. I have seen her grow so much. She has PTSD and struggles with panic arracks. But at work, she has found her voice and independent spirit again. She is getting stronger and more resilient. She will be 16 in October and the store manager is promoting her to Crew Trainer. It is a guaranteed promotion. I am definitely proud of her and thankful she started pushing to work She took the initiative to apply to work and working at McDonalds has been a blessing.

I worked retail for 2 1/2 years and hated it. I learned quickly how ugly people can be, but it also taught me how I should treat people, especially those working these thankless jobs. Knowing what I know now though, I will never work in retail again, or even the food industry.

I am first an artist before a saleswoman. I miss painting while I work in my mother's shop. My mother needs me for muscle work.

retail/customer service suck, I use to work in that field and got out. It made me very cynical seeing the ugly side of people and lose faith in humanity seeing how people act in a emergency.
Same here. It made me wonder, if there's any way of improving the situation of those working in retail or food industry. Because well, as low as the salary is, this kinda job really can make someone straight-up hate life or other people, if they stay there for a little too long. And it's the fault of the customers and higher management alike, not just the earnings in these jobs, BS things that people in other fields don't have to deal with.

Well, in today's colleges you're right. However, it use to be that you were a pupil--and college use to be rough. And, this is why we have a record number of people graduating college today who still can't read. That would have never happened 50 years ago. You wouldn't have even been able to enter.
And as the customer of their product i.e. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND LIFE PREPAREDNESS safe spaces, entitlement, and grievance culture neither educate, impart skill, or prepare you for the real world. As a student you are buying intellectual maturity, not 18- 24 year old day care.

It is not the university's job to teach students how to handle life. It is the university's job to provide students with skills and knowledge needed for a profession. It is the parents' job to teach their children how to handle life. If the parent doesn't do that (as mine didn't), the onus is on the individual to figure it out. There is no "trying" in college. You either succeeded or you didn't. And if you didn't, you are seen as stupid.

Was forced to be father of my own heavily depressed mom, and commute via train to work and study.
In the end it was too much, got dropped out, but mom is back on track, got a stable job, moved together with GF, weathered the lockdowns despite both working in hospitality, and still better off than the regular paycheck to paycheck people. Learned to take care of my loved ones and hold my ground, keep improving every single day.
You are blessed for having the upbringing with the right values, cherish them and your 'privilege' (whatever the F those numbskulls did with the meaning) will provide ample soil for success that gives back to the community.

Been there done that. I got yelled at for not finding something the way that the boss wanted me to find it. I was looking for the number within the category, he wanted me to find it based on the colour coding. He yelled at me, for going to the bathroom too much. (I'm sorry but once a day, for 3 minutes is not too much. He gossiped about our performance to fellow employees. (He kept gossiping to me that other employee was a bad worker but only complained to her about arbitrary stuff, never what he really thought.) He would say "Don't you think that sometimes "insert emplyee name here* is bitchy sometimes? If you'd agree, that sometimes everyone can be bitchy, he would go to that employee and say "Do you know what *insert name of other employee here* said about you? He was a micro-managing, power hungry, gossiping asshole. But I looked for other jobs. School bullies were worse because you can't get away from them.

Jon S True, but as adults, we have more life experience and self esteem to handle bullies. Children do not handle these situations as well simply due to lack of life experience. We have social skills that allow us to deal with the bully whereas children don't. Studies have proven that these things affect children much worse than adults. Not to say that workplace bullies are fun; they aren't. They are godawful, but at least we as adults have coping mechanisms. I may not have liked working under 2 bullies, but I have made the best of it, and learned something from them. :) Even if it's only how not to manage people. I also took some of their criticisms, and tried to do better, which has helped me in my career. School bullies tend to attack the person. Adult bullies tend to attack the insignificant aspects of your job because attacking you would get them in trouble.

I would only quible a bit with end. "Put others first." This is bad advice. Put others first but always recognize when it is in your best interest to do so. Being polite to your customers is not the end goal. Gaining their patronage, and therefore your profit is. In short, we help others so we may help ourselves.

@elgostine, I spent my time shooting and being shot at. Of all the people that I served with I don't know anyone with long term effects from the war. Myself, I was a bit shell shocked for a year or two. People call that PTSD these days but it was never something that drastically effected my life. I prefer the old fashioned term shell shock because that more apply describes what it really was. If a car back fired or I heard a lowed noise I'd jump. Then the episode was over just as quick as it came. Literally a friction of a second 7 or 8 times a year. That's it.
These days I have no lasting effects and no one that I personally know does. I served. I did my duty and did my job. Looking back it was no different than going to work at McDonald's, only rather than serving burgers my job was to neutralize enemy targets. If that sounds harsh or mean to someone oh well, perhaps they will be the ones to suffer. It doesn't change the facts. For my part I learned more about life and myself. Despite the tragedy of war I am better for having served and better prepared for life than I would have been if i hadn't.

One of the biggest things I have noticed among the people I know who belong to SJW movements, is it seems they lack an experience fundamental to a servant attitude you speak of: belonging to a team. Their focus on protecting their own self interests only at the expense of others is something that one learns not to do in putting a team first. I noticed this trend through observing the very different thought process between them, and those I had the privelege of serving in the army with. Most of us grew up playing sports, and then underwent a gruelling process of training for combat with each other, to learn how to act, not out of self preservation or self interest, but for the success of the team. We put the mission before our own lives. And sadly, some never returned home because of this. But we learned that life is more than just ourselves. It is about something bigger than us, and being a part of that.
These kids crave a sense of belonging. And with that lack of experience, be it through sports, or even a job, which less and less kids experience before university each year, how can they possibly gain that sense of belonging? By turning to social justice movements, that advocate the same ideals as them. The only ones they have ever known: their own self interests above all else. They seek to make an impact, and find a social team to be a part of, but haven't learned the importance of putting the team first. And sadly, they will never truly understand that that very quality, is what will exclude them from ever landing a job where they can belong and make an impact.
Sometimes I get tired of scrolling through the same reactions.. It's all just the same thing said in different ways.. But whenever I find comments like yours that give me a brief moment of clarity... it becomes worth it.

i remember when i used to play soccer from 8 to 10 years old until i got a medical condition that made me have to abandon soccer forever. But one thing we could see, most of the times that our team lost, was becase some jerk wanted to be THE ONE who scores the goal, not wanting to work as a team and sacrifice their own pride of scoring a goal, and then our team most of the times lost because of selfishness of one of our own.
Soccer, or any other collective sport, teaches you better than 4 years of university where you unlearn. You learn to work as a team, to put the others before yourself to the greater good of the group, to recognize when you are not good enough and only slows the team down, therefore you will have to work to improve yourself and be able to help your team. While in college, they say that people have "rights" that they don't, call a fair thing like giving more money to the best employeers (an unequal fairness) is selfish, say "the right for this and the right for that" and calls the duty "a violation of your rights", and feed a sense of "me first" on young people. I'm 22 and i'm ashamed of being in this "me first" generation. Put your kid on soccer, basketball, voleyball and it will teach your kid a sense of resposability and putting others beforre himself/herself better than college.
I agree so much with this, I saw the exact same thing in my school: those that had never worked, or done anything useful with their time, are SJW.

My supervisor is literally the dumbest person I have ever met. He's in charge of making tactical decisions that effect everyone, and in some cases, actual safety. He has a reputation of taking things personally and has a huge ego, so if he were to deliberately break a safety rule for convenience and I were to see it and go above his head, and I'm typically right, he'd be pissed off but unable to retaliate other than with words.
He'll go for 20 minutes before noticing something I've noticed, but if I tell him, I run the risk of being insulted/shouted down for that insult.
Not to worry however:

His wife recently left him- because he's a L O S E R. Not intelligent at all.
He had a speeding ticket about a year ago. He claims he went in to pay it with cash and did, then a year later, he was pulled over and arrested/fined for having a suspended license for not paying it. He claims they forgot that he paid the ticket. (And yet he didn't keep a receipt.) As such, he lost a lot of money and nearly his job as he needed to rideshare to work for a time as he awaited trial. (10 PM to 4 AM shift. 40 minute drive, hard for mass transport, eh.)
He had a lot of debt that his wife left over, which I found out was from medical expenses.
When he's worked at a job for around 10 years that provides Insurance free of charge. The best insurance on the market. He somehow managed to put medical debt on his credit card, metaphorically, despite having amazing insurance that'd cover anything from root canal to bone marrow transplant. Then, his paychecks started getting garnished, so he's basically in poverty despite making $7-8 an hour or so more than me.
He's now also paying child support.
None of this is his fault, but on others or on circumstance, as he seems to think. Still smokes, still admits to 'getting trashed' over July 4th weekend and not preparing for work and suffering physical consequences, smokes weed and cigarettes and does energy drinks, used to do meth- is still the worst supervisor and probably the worst person I've ever met.

@Donald Bauman I haven't completed my degree myself, but it would have been nice to have one due to employers often requiring to have one. After I immigrated, I went into a completely different field and became a professional in it. I learned from the internet, from the books, and on the job. As I said in my other comment, everybody learns differently. Some learn better in college, while others learn better on their own -- there is no right or wrong here.
In college, the college is providing you services. In a job, you provided service, work for the employer.
But a college is supposed to be training you for the workforce. However, they are doing a poor job by coddling students when they need to learn to take care of themselves. I graduated from a university and I learned very little that actually applies to my job. I mostly just needed that certification that came with it.

While there are some students who go to college on mom and dads money and don't care about actually getting a career after. If I am paying for my own college, I want the college to prepare me for my chosen career even if that means teaching tough "life lessons" however, colleges are not only failing to teach life lessons but actually teaching the complete opposite making a college degree worthless in the working world. If you going to college just to learn then this model is fine but if you look at college as an investment in your career then college needs to kick some butt.

Actually, there is much material in many fields, including social sciences that requires quite a bit of immersion in you about the subjects that don't overlap much with daily life at all. I've actually made bad comments about stuff like this before, so don't think I'm hating on you. However, I've heard some peoples' examples of "life lessons", and they really aren't very conducive to learning academic material in the first place. Especially since when you are studying much of this stuff you are required to get away from "life" anyway to be immersed in an environment of academic education to avoid useless distraction which might make the learning less efficient. People are getting wrong this video (and maybe this girl too): This is a clear message to the universities around the world to teach the right things, include more practical lessons in order to not be overwhelmed by the world, people in general don't care about the employees at all, so you have to remain professional and cool; however though, this doesn't mean that you have to tolerate all those kinds of treatment. Of course, you won't talk back to a customer or start crying like a baby for every time they hurt your feelings, especially if you were actually wrong, and if someone catcalls you (you could actually complain about that if it happens frequently, even leave, mcdonalds isn't the only employer of the world), you can be firm and tell them to leave, without making a ruckus. This girl makes it kinda seem like this:

Two jobs I hate: fastfood & retail. And guess what? I work on both at the same time.
A thing a learn: "customers are not friends, so do not engage with them as such, just go to the point and don't be expressly or give a detailed explanation over things".
Never have a relationship inside the job. It never ends wells. Never and ever.
Which job is the worse: retail.
- Your hours are subject to performance (credit card applications & surveys, both that aren't totally under your control but customer choice), they are always changing the environment of work from within and out struggling to compete vs other competitors and the seasons. They always cut hours unless you're the last resort for the time being. They always do their best to stick with the budget vs the demand of customers flow and taxation. People's returns are a mess and uncontrolled, and they have a sense of brutal entitlement to everything even without receipts or beyond the time of return policy. Coupons are as misleading as the sale signs. And like it or not, if you demonstrate you are a great potential chances are that you will be left alone working being the last cashier who has to wait endlessly for a brake.
Fastfood is better. Your hours are always flat, depending on your availability. You're always needed. There's always lot to do but you don't need to sell credit cards or take people's e-mails or phone numbers to proceed. So revenue is subject to people' hunger and sugar-carbs cravings satisfaction. There's no "returns", just sometimes refund or a wrong order, nothing else and the managers handles that, not you. And here and there often you get free food if not discounted already. Free drinks too. If you can work fast and master your skills, you'll do way better off in fastfood over retail. Period.
Retail companies are crap. I worked for Sears at their Repair Center after dropping out. They wanted to push ridiculous numbers in a timely yet efficient manner but they were to an extent unreasonable resulting in frequent worker turnaround.
I worked both fast food and retail and retail was preferable. The retail job treated me like an actual human being with feelings and the customers were more friendly. Also the retail job made sure that people got breaks and days off, which the fast food job did not.

It is simple. In the university you are paying 15 to 40k a year to be there. At McDonald's you are GETTING PAID 15k a year (rounding it up).

Dislike Bot I was just gonna say the same thing. People always joke about McDonalds so I never looked into their educational opportunities until just recently and boy is it a deal for me. They have opportunities for those trying to become software developers and they help pay for your college. Loyalty is all they ask of you. Start from the trenches and work your way up the ladder.
If you go to a university or college, take Law, Engineering, Computer Science, Health Science, Accounting, or Trades.
Anything else is a waste of your time and money and you're better off building your career from first a low wage job.

Disagree. A liberal arts education is good for its own sake. It won't get you a job, but if you ask me colleges shouldn't always be place-holders for a job-training program. One should go to college to become educated, not necessarily to become trained.
The givornment should stop funding student loans for degrees in jobless fields. It's only creating cronyism in these colleges because it incentivizes them to teach dependance on the state, leading to the students voting for more govt spending on colleges in a feedback loop.
I have a one word answer to that: STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. You mentioned a couple of forms of hard science, but left others out. You didn't mention math at all.

Well, experience is the best teacher. I worked for Kroger for more than two decades, and it made me more conscientious about treating retail employees well when I was the one shopping or dining out. We were told that if we HAD to vent our feelings about a stressful situation or a douchebag, we could only do it from the depths of the walk-in freezer. I learned about discretion, because no one likes or trusts a gossiper. If we all put ourselves first, the company would collapse. Regarding college, academic resources (like tutoring) should be available for those who will make good use of it, and new students should be made aware of those resources. But 'putting your own well-being first' is an instruction that can easily be misconstrued, especially for those whose only responsibility till then has been completing high school. Many, myself included, had lived a fairly sheltered life. I'd had no siblings to look after, and the only money I'd earned was from babysitting. I wasn't spoiled, but I had little life experience and I did have to deal with social anxiety. I graduated high school in '89, long before the 'everyone gets a trophy' mentality and identity politics and the Safe Space Culture. Which is just as well, because I doubt those things would have helped me to mature.
I worked at kroger. Was the best and worst experience of my life. Best in that I learned how to approach people, worst in that I made minimum wage and had terribly inconsistent hours. I don't regret it in the least, but wouldn't return. Learned my lesson. xD
I found whenever I felt tempted to lash out at douchebag customers it was best to make myself cold and emotionally distant. Not the ideal way to normally act with customers, but it was preferable to getting into a major verbal confrontation which would more likely get me fired.

University's role is to qualify someone for their future roles. It is to teach them skills so as to not be a sinkhole to society. The entire education system is designed to give people the knowledge required to become a member of the work force.
Teaching someone how to kick and scream whenever someone disagrees with them is not something that will help them fulfill their future roles, unless that role is a SJW on welfare benefits.

I agree with everything up to the last point. If you go your entire life worrying about other people you will get to your "destination" in life and realize that it isn't what you thought it would be and that it took you entirely too long to get there. The people I've known that give are happy to do so, but live miserable lives because they do so. Charity is the spice of life, but taking will ALWAYS be the meat and veggies. It's not a nice sentiment but it's the reality of the world we live in.

Well students in a way, are customers. Not employee's. Schools are just way too over sensitive, nowadays, but it doesn't change the fact that you have to pay a butt load of money, just to have an opportunity that's not even guaranteed. (I.e failing hard classes)
When I worked at McDonald's, I had so many customers come in that were jerks and I made sure to stand up to each one of them, my managers never cared

I've thought of this before, but I kind of forgot about it over time. Yes, those jobs that require you to put a common goal before yourself have definitely taught me a lot. I worked in a factory, a department store, a bar, tutored and various other jobs. The character building definitely helped me become who I am today. Today I am an engineer for a major company with good pay, great benefits and lots of oportunity to grow. The jobs I did while in school definitely helped me be able to hold my own and deal with people which I attribute to my success. Great video, I always respect service industry people for the challenges and stress they deal with daily.

This is a very good summary of real life, from someone who had to handle her challenges, and move forward with her personal development despite them. She "grew" into a professional - and adult - based on character-developing experiences and tough situations. My own experiences at a grocery store and elsewhere were similar. Good stuff.
I showed my 17 year old nephew this video . He works at Pizza Hut in Whittier Ca. He told me that working for Pizza Hut for 8mths he has learned to see the world in a whole different way and it made him a better person. He said , he feels more mature and has met all kinds of different people. Its made him more understandable and observant to different situations good or bad .

You are well on your way to maturity. Working in places like McDonalds can be tough, but both of my daughters did and they, like you grew from it. As you will see when you get into the real world of work doing what the company hired you to do, within reason, is what you need to do. You will have the right to quit and get another job, but the principle is the same everywhere. It is refreshing to hear the wisdom from someone your age, I wish you well and pray there are more like you in the country. I don’t see a lot of it in the world.

I remember when I was being interviewed for a scholarship at Haverford. I said I was going to pursue a physics or applied math major. They wound up giving the scholarship to an English major who had a more tan complexion and happened to be a member of the lgbtq community. I wound up going to johns hopkins only to be confronted with apathetic professors and a bunch of socialist Chinese kids who come directly from China and have a ridiculous amount of wealth. College is shit. Pursue a career in a blue collar job.
My first job ever was at my local McDonalds, and as a college student myself this video intrigued me. I remember being one of only 3 people working one night, while everyone else, all 23 staff members, were outside smoking during a dinner rush. However, I didn't complain or bend to the pressure. I just kept working. I accepted that their behavior would not be a cause to my own. I had a job to do, working 3-7 hours after high school, and I was going to do it. I only lasted 3 months because I began failing math, but I am grateful for the experience. It was a little taste of the working world, and a reminder as to why I am in college in the first place. But it also taught the valuable lesson that I am not the only person in the world, and when you take up a job, your feelings are no logner relevant, only the customer's is.

I was a McDonalds crew kid in high school and college. In my considered opinion, it is quite possibly the best first job or training ground to prepare yourself for a professional career. The owner of the store took me under his wing and taught me more about the way business works and how to manager a diverse group of people than I learned in college or any other job since. McDonalds can be an amazing path to success if you are willing to learn the lessons available to you.
This is true. Working in the service industry prepare you alot more character wise than attending classes at college. You learn to empathise with the people behind the counter and become a more pleasant person because of it. Also you learn social skills like conflict resolve and communication that college doesn't teach. I think everyone should at one point in their life work in the servie industry to understand how hard it can be and how much self restraint you need to do it.

by learning when to put others first she learned to truly put herself first since those lessons will benefit her in the long run. the self sacrifice that is required in modern day "work" does however make many people "mature" into rough characters. one should never forget the price that has to be paid for these lessons. i ofcourse dont want to defend the abomination that is called safe-space.
Love this when you are expected to be accountable it motivates you and your thinking. I worked at a large Retailer for over a decade years ago and I still draw on the training and critical thinking, problem solving skills I had to learn to manage people, products and customers. Invaluable lessons.
