Thank you so much for all ypu videos I can't stop watching. I'm a new quail mom and I have already fallen I. Love with my 16 chick's and look forward to this journey and you help me to feel like I'm doing good being there mom so thank you so much. 😊
Interesting, I use 2 cups wood ash, 2 cup sand, 2 cup dirt and 1 Tbsp DE, mixed well. I usually put 2 cups of the mix into their plastic bath. They so enjoy it and are very entertaining while bathing.
You can get oil pans or kitty litter boxes at the dollar store. They work great for dust baths or if it's too hot you can put some water in them for the quail to stand in to cool off.
Mine absolutely love their sand bath. My quail hutch has a built in sand bath and definitely notice it keeps them busy and not bored. I sift my sand once or twice a week to get any solids/feathers and such out to stretch the sand life. Most of my eggs are laid in the sand box and stay really clean. Great video Terry! :)
I use sand from my gardens 😂 soils here are very very depleted unless being maintained. I mix the native sand with, DE or a mite dust. I do wash/rinse and dry the native sand before giving it to them. I might consider wood ash since we have a fireplace.
Half of my 8x3 coop is sand (see Slightly rednecked coop) and this has been the summer of carnage. Blinded roosters due to aggression, overbred hens, despite good hen/rooster ratio. I sift the sand and add new periodically and they do love daily sand bathing. I also raise mealworms and encourage them to hunt in the sand, as a treat. It gets them off the wire and helps prevent bumblefoot, although I had to cull a hen due to her bumblefoot earlier this summer as well. *Sigh*. Just candled my 40 incubating eggs two days ago and had to pitch 30 due to infertility, and have a rooster with a broken beak. Thinking about starting over with a new group. Any feedback is appreciated.
I would watch for an aggressive bird and cull. Also, if they are overheated or stressed out in anyway, ie predator, cat, hawk, etc. could be causing unrest with your birds.
Thank you Terry! I have premier one electric poultry netting around all the pens now. No more predators, only insurgency from within! Hens in the kitchen hospital cage aren't bad, but roosters are downright noisy!
Hey Terry i got quail and they're laying eggs and i think im ready to try incubating this will be my first time so if theres any info on products and when to do what itd be greatly appreciated its not a bunch just 3 females and a male. Just dont want to overlook anything and thanks for the help sir.
Whatever costs a dollar a piece in the US, always costs $5 in Australia. We must be so much richer than the rest of the world. You can't get a decent incubator under $500
How often do you put the sand bath in? Once a week? or more frequently? I just got a male and female, they are just about 6 weeks old. I left the sand bath in with them and they enjoyed it thoroughly, but then just slept in it and pooped it all up~!! How long do you leave the sandbox in with them and if they haven't pooped in it, do you ever re-use the sand?
My 23 quail are outdoors in a aviary that I built for them. I provided a sand box for them and they just go crazy dusting themselves, especially after I've screened it - they get the wood chips that I put over the ground in the aviary. There's times that I just set there in the aviary watching them, it's quite comical. My 13 hens started laying eggs a week ago, I'm collecting 7-9 eggs per day. Does anyone have any tips on getting the hens to brood their eggs?
@Road2Training if you cut down on the male quail load, the females will be much less stressed, and you may have a better chance of having hens go broody. We also have our quail on the ground in a large pen with housing, and "hidey holes", places to dust bathe, lots of greens in season, microgreens and sprouted grains out of season, fermented grains, meal worm treats, and even songbird seed when there are no other treats readily available.
@Road2Training I've made hiding places throughout the aviary by using Cedar tree boughs, also some rock formations. I feed them greens from my raised-bed garden - leaves from the broccoli, Swiss Chard, kale and lettuce plants - they really tear into the greens when I first put them in the aviary each morning. I've got two really aggressive males that will be dinner in a week or so. I'm trying to get the hens to brood but no luck so far.
@@CoturnixCorner wanted to say a huge thank you for having Mr Schofield on, i contacted him and am now getting his silver hatching eggs sent by the man he sold his birds too, very excited.
hi, i have quail for 2 months now and they have laid eggs now, i put them in the incubator. they all came out, but after a few days they started to get weaker. and the next day they are dead. it has happened a few times now. Do you know how that is possible?
I just did this with my birds. It is one of my favorite times to sit and watch them.
My quails love it when I give them the sand bath. They seem to know when I carry it to the cage and they seem really happy

My birds love this too!!
I think they all do 😀
Got my answer lol. Covered everything. Thanks

Do you still provide sand baths in your all wire cages? It seems small for 6 quail and a sand bath inside that cage, doesn't it?
Whatever costs a dollar a piece in the US, always costs $5 in Australia. We must be so much richer than the rest of the world. You can't get a decent incubator under $500
How much feed is best for adults per day . I have been feeding free choice. When I Butchered the Extra males seemed like they were very fat.
Terry, Why not keep a sand bath in their cage all the time?
You can

I try for once a week but sometimes it's every other week. Mine do the same, they sleep and lay eggs in the sand box.

I am just starting to raise quail u said can put little ash in the sand box pellet stove ash will it work
I imagine since it's ultimately wood it would work still! Let us know how it goes
Love it
Terry would it hurt to leave the sand box in with them
Not at all
My quails refused to take a sand bath when the tray is given to them. One appears to be itching. What should I do?
How much DE is too much?
WHAT IS YOUR PROTIEN % YOU FEED YOUR QUAIL. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS RECOMENDED. HELP PLEASE.
25 plus grower, 17 layer
I feed 30% gamebird starter until they start to lay, then I switch to a 16% layer formula.
@@thefarmer828 i just bought 30% game bird starter. Will that work..

My Avian sand was cheaper than play sand I suppose it depends on how much you are getting 😊
i mix diatomaceous earth and wood ash in mine
i put sand baths in at 3 weeks old, no harmful effects

Could be anything really, from genetics to feed. I would need a lot more info to help you.
Ok no problem thank you
I think it hase to do with the genetics,
Do you think it would help if I bought some quail from another place.
You don't have to but if you don't they'll hate you and they may attack you.
Can we put clay instead of sand ?
I literally just bought that same sand for my birds... it's like four bucks and great.
I add DE and wood ash, helps parasite control big time
It's good stuff, add a little wood ash if you can and your birds will love you for it.
Just got my quail mabey a week ago is 6 hens to 2 males too many
No, you should be fine. That's a 3:1 ratio so you should get good fertility rates.
uumm just want to say umm that i love your channel Terry umm great content umm best quail channel hand down!
Um, are trying to be funny? LOL ... thanks man!
Can I just use sand from a beach?
Sure, I would run the sand though a screen to filter out the larger pieces of debris first.
What ratio of sand:wood ash?
He said 2 cups sand + wood ash
Big cups not regular measuring
1/4 of the same cup you used to measure the sand.
Sand baths, huh? Are they anywhere near as ridiculously entertaining to watch as chickens going at it?
Absolutely, yes
