When egg production is high and the growth rate is at its highest, limestone sand should be used. It's calcium content is needed in their diet. It's made out of calcium carbonate. Classical desert sand contains no calcium; it's silicone dioxide. Both will function adequately as grit in their gizzard. An easy way to differentiate the two is to pick up a handful of the sand and rub it vigorously between your hands. If no dust is produced, it's silicone dioxide. If the sand feels more dusty after rubbing it, then it's limestone sand. Another way to differentiate is to put some of the suspect sand in a tablespoon of vinegar. If it bubbles, its calcium carbonate. Silicone dioxide will just sit there with no bubbling.
I raise my Quail in a sandbox they do great and I feed them Turkey starter and started feeding the baby chickens that I hatch and I'm amazed at how fast and healthy my baby chicken look
If there is a car window cling or something I can put on my car with your channel name on it, I'd be more than happy to put it on. Ppl need to see this kind of lifestyle nowadays especially. God bless you all
Does the play sand has to be washed from dust? I still have leftover Home Depot play sand I recently used on my aquariums but I had to wash it first before use. Will it apply the same to quails?
The only problem with that is that those are soluble so they don't stay in the crop for very long. But if you are giving them a constant supply I am sure it would work.
Tip of the day: Before inserting the sand into the cage, put it into a frying pan and heat it up. A warm sand bath is the same as a warm bath for us :P
My 2 quail are about 3 weeks old and I tried to introduce sand to them. They don’t know quite what to do with the sand. Do you think they are too young for a sand bath?
I use bagged sand for vehicle weight. Its cheapest in winter where I live and its course enough for then to bathe and consume it so I buy enough for all summer too.
That works too. I never buy sand for my truck but I might have to keep an eye out in the winter and see if I can score a deal. Then again, at $4 a bag and only needing to add sand every 6 months or so, it won't be much of a savings. :)
Yes, there is no reason that shouldn't work. You might want to bake it in a sheet pan first to kill off any mites or things that might be harboring in it.
You don't really need grit if you are feeding them a commercial game bird crumble. But sand alone works fine as grit. They only need it if they are eating live bugs and whole vegetable matter though.
I have found your channel to be super helpful. I am only raising quail for eggs so I try to avoid any of your videos that might cover harming the quail when I can help it, but it’s all really informative outside of that for me. I definitely need trigger warnings when you have videos about eating them.
I have been looking everywhere and I can not find anything about raising quail organically? Is it possible? And is there any videos which may help guide me?
It is possible. I am not aware of an organic food for quail but I am sure if you look hard enough you can find one. I am sorry I can't give you specific information on it. I would ask your local feed store and see if they might be able to order it in for you.
Good Morning! I seen the worm bin video, at the end you said you will make a video on how to get the worm poo out! Did you you make that video? what's it called ? so I can find it! Thanks
I am so sorry. Unfortunately we had a disaster with the worm bin (it got knocked over) and lost the worms so I wasn't able to do a follow up video. I might do it again at some point though.
I have 6 bobwhites and I’m looking for some Coturnix about 12-15 chicks everywhere I have found has been minimum order of 50. Any insight would be great!
It might be best to look on Craigslist and see if you can find someone locally that is selling birds. Live quail don't usually do well in shipping and, as you said, large farms are going to require larger orders to make it worth doing.
I had ask you about what the name of the quail in Southwest. The name of this quail is ( blue quail ) they range from the Southwest USA, to Central Mexico. What do you know about these quail. Would they be good to raise for meat birds.
I honestly don't know a ton about them but they are not going to be your best bet for meat birds. They don't lay as consistently as Coturnix and grow out much slower. Coturnix are the clear winner if you are looking for fast meat production.
My quail are breeding like crazy but no eggs. My quail are on the ground in a pen about 10 by 30 feet. They have game and I show wild bird seed around the pen. What am I doing wrong. My quail are less than a year old.
Doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. The days are just now getting long enough for them to start laying eggs with only natural light. The roosters almost always start crowing and breeding before the hens start laying. Give them a little bit of time and they will start laying. I wouldn't be surprised if you start getting eggs tomorrow.
I don't personally sell quail eggs but I can recommend a few hatcheries that do. You can't go wrong with Kansas City Quail Farms. Another great hatchery is Hatch Poultry Farms. I actually have a discount code for Hatch Poultry in the description of all my most recent videos. I hope that helps.
I don't think that is a good idea myself. I don't think it would hurt them but It isn't meant for birds. They have different nutritional requirements. As long as you are feeding them a good commercial feed there isn't any need for it anyway.
I would double check what is in the cat litter before using it. As long as it is all natural and doesn't include any dangerous chemicals it should be fine though.
sure. You might want to put it in a pan and bake it for a while first to make sure you aren't introducing any mites or anything to your birds. But I don't know that it is a big concern.
I feed all my rabbits a commercial rabbit pellet. I get one that is between 16% and 19% protein. They only get as much as they will eat in 24 hours. I also give them as much Timothy hay as they want. But you don't have to feed hay if you don't want to. I hope that answers your question.
@@jasmynesartstudio I really wish I took pictures, it was brutal and kind of hard to even believe unless seen. The 3 quail ate so much sand that their stomachs bursted. I would say they had enough in their stomachs to fill a hackysack if not more. I now have the sand away from their cages and take them out 1 at a time so I can monitor but that was just a tad bit crazy.

Could I use this as bedding in a brooder so I could use a litter scoop to clean out the brooder?

Nice. Turkey starter is a great feed for them. Sounds like you have a very nice set up.

can you use desert sand for coturnix quail???
Any play sand I use I bake it in the oven at 350 for an hour. Sterilizes it good!
Loved the music.

Hi Chris what do you put on the base of the enclosed sanded area to keep it dry?
Does the play sand has to be washed from dust? I still have leftover Home Depot play sand I recently used on my aquariums but I had to wash it first before use. Will it apply the same to quails?
Crush dried egg shells and mix with food or place in a separate small dish, works as a good grit substitute for birds.

how soon should i give the quail sand, i was told 3 weeks. can you give quail sand at 2 weeks ? thanks
I live on the coast so will the sand off the beach be ok?

What about reptile and or hermit crab sand called calcium substrate? I would think the calcium would be beneficial.
you dont want to use that for any animals really. calci sand is terrible

I mix chimney ash and sand
Nothing wrong with that. If I had a fireplace I would do the same thing.
Does that mean i can go to the beach and bring home sand for them?
Do you use any DE mixed into their sand? To keep any mites and any worms they may get under control??

Do you put DE in with the sand?
No. I don't use DE at all myself.
I am trying to find game bird feed, could you show me what you use? Is it the same as just wild bird seed?
Not the same as bird seed...I use Purina game bird feed, you can find it a tractor supply or local feed stores
I usually order it online from Walmart
Can I use park sand
I don't know what exactly is in park sand but it should be fine.

How long Does it take for Coturnix Quails to hatch
Generally about 17 days. Some may hatch a little earlier and some may hatch a little later but the bulk of them should hatch on day 17.
I use cat litter box for them to lay egg. Just put some hay in so the egg don’t break. And for me all my quails lay inside.
Like a covered cat litter box or just a pan?
Just a pan/tray
I would double check what is in the cat litter before using it. As long as it is all natural and doesn't include any dangerous chemicals it should be fine though.

You don't have to use sand. You can use dirt, or even wood ash. There are lots of options. as long as it is natural it should be fine.
Look for granite sand if you can find it.
I just use regular construction sand or play sand. Haven't seen granite sand before.
