Thank you Ross for your time and kindness in sharing these gold nuggets with us. The stories and advice from all of these wonderful folks is priceless and I could listen to ya'll talk all day. Take care and peace and love to you and all from Arkansas!
A live version of Sheep came into my feed a month ago, from Rogers’ 22-23 Not A Drill tour. I’ve known this song over 30 years…but didn’t know the current drummer of it. It was Joey. Good God Almighty above…what a drummer! Immediately I fell for his feel, time, fills and groove maintaining. Side note: I saw a Gordon Lightfoot film and commenting in it was a Lenny Waronker. I wasn’t surprised at all from there….
Funny thing what Joey said about Freddie, how nuts he was, but how on the spot he was about drumming, like what he said :"He said exact that what you needed to hear". I did an interview with Freddie when he stayed in Belgium in the early 90ies, we had dinner in the evening at Bruce Becker's little attic flat , talked and talked, the actual interview started around midnight and lasted till like 4-5 in the morning. One specific thing he told me as a teacher to a drummer, he said :"Are you serious about drumming? Do you wanna be serious about learning to play the drums? Why don't you pack your things and move to NY and dig in"...And he was right, because at that moment I did not follow his advice, and I still regret it till today...And Ross what a moment, Buddy and Freddie in one room !
Asking myself… “Who’s is this man? I have been learning this obsession of so many current drummers who play worship and or simply love the same cymbal sounds of this drummer. Idk if popularity is rising with Istanbul Cymbals… or if they are more on my radar… what makes this guy so special? Why is his name on what seems to be a legendary ride cymbal? Who is he?” This is my very first glimpse into this drummer. Looking forward to diving deep into all his music.
What a fucking awesome interview-(discussion)-The drum doctor (Ross), I have read, seen, heard and watched many of his featured videos and its always a amazing and funny as hell experience. Joey is a super down to earth traps masyter and deserves much love and respect. How many times has Ross saved the session i wonder with is many different drums?
Love this channel....Keltner made me click but it gets you thinking. Have you ever interviewed John Convertino? One of my favorites and rarely recognized. Calexico , Giantsand.....love him. Also would love an interview with Phil Selway and Clive Deamer performing live together. Bought a cheap kit....getting inspired to set it up! Love it- thank you 🙏
I really dig that it starts raining as soon as they start talking about John Bonham´s finesse: The rain Song is certainly one of his best performances, REALLY subtle...
This is freaking awesome. What happened to this channel? It looks like he last uploaded a video two years ago? That's really a shame. Great stuff here!
I also used to play the Pink Panther Theme in my beginnings, haha. That was probably my first three parents concert performances, accompanied by my teacher on the piano.
Wow, exactly the type of content I crave for as a session drummer. Any chance the "audio" version of this podcast could end up on Apple Podcast/Spotify? I listen to podcasts while washing the dishes...
These are so awesome! Please keep them coming🙏 Have you considered releasing these interviews in podcast form? I know I would love these in audio, too... and even an hour or two long, as well. Just sayin’🤷♂️😊
Ross, I'm so glad I stumbled on these videos. Great job! Quick question, I know the focus here is to have a conversation, but any chance you can share some info on the mic'ing process you use for these? What are you running your mics through?...etc....
Hi Ross - I really love the tone of those toms. I have 1962 Ludwig kit with the same shell sizes, would love to get it set up like this. What model coated remos did you setup for this video? If you remember the batter and reso choices for this I'd be super excited to know.
Don’t forget the Linzer tarts Freddy needed his linzer tarts and his cigarettes I studied with Freddy for over 35 years weekly and I know exactly what you’re talking about I was his whipping post I was his delivery boy I had to stay with him Overnight but I learned So much From him during those overnight sessions because he Would open up about Drumming and Drumming technique he would do this just to keep me there I wish I had a dollar fo everything I had to go to Bea’s bakery for him and Morts deli next-door See the thing about Freddy as you didn’t just study with him you Apprenticed with him! you know “wax on wax off”he was the Miyagi sensei of the drums in
What makes a good groove? I’ll tell y’all: call up the blues medley during Whole Lotta Love from the How The West Was Won LZ cd. At some points they pull it down and stretch it (the beat) out to the unrecognizable. Here’s where the importance of Bonzo is never better recognized. He never once loses “the groove.” Not losing your place and keeping proper time. That’s what makes a great groove IMO. He (Bonzo) was a tremendous blues drummer in every sense. Without him this would’ve been an overt disaster. He made whatever Page and Plant wrote, work. We’re talking about four of England’s most technically adept players here. This is why Zeppelin had no equal.
15:55 I was at one of these shows in Brazil and sadly lots of people booed his "DON'T vote for Fascist Fucks" messages. Just the kind of people that think The Wall is an album about construction.
Thanks for a great episode! The drum sound is just awesome. Joey has an incredible touch! How is it captured except for the AEA ribbons in front of the kit and next to the floor tom?
One more Stereo AEA R88 Ribbon mic over the top center of the kit just out of frame/view from their wide shot. Interface and preamps are the Universal Audio 8P. Don't know what mic or preamp emulations, reverb, and/or plugins were used.
Not only is Joey the best drummer I ever had the opportunity to work with in the studio, he's the most talented musician I've ever encountered.
These are great conversations! I can't wait for the next drummer.
That's so awesome that his favorite drummer was Jim Keltner. What a great story and interview. Thank you.
Love these conversations. I need more Drum Doctor. I need more OTR.
So digging these convos and this channel! Thank you!
that is absolutely sweet !!! beautiful , thank you both very much !!!!

These are really insightful and inspiring conversations... beautifully produced too. Keep them coming...
this is the Joey Waronker interview I've been waiting for!
Awesome Joey!! Kinda my same story with the jazz and the light touch! Playing in a wedding band also contributed to it.
I really dig that it starts raining as soon as they start talking about John Bonham´s finesse: The rain Song is certainly one of his best performances, REALLY subtle...
I really dig whats happening on this channel, very fascinating information and stories! So happy this stuff is out there
you should add more playing through ought the video... would like to hear more of these beautiful drums
Joey's playing on Beck's "Chemtrails" is my fave drums to listen to.
The dude is a friggin' beast.
His drumming on that song is the whole reason I looked him up
Awesome and interesting conversations !
Awesome Interview!
I have always been a light player and can really relate to this. Awesome interview.
This is freaking awesome. What happened to this channel? It looks like he last uploaded a video two years ago? That's really a shame. Great stuff here!
These are so great! Keep em coming, Ross!
I love your channel!
Saw Joey at Earls Court in 99 and Trafalgar square in 01 with R.E.M.
Epic drummer!
Loved! It! Wanted to hear more of that kit. Snare sounds great

I didn´t know The Dude was the same guy as The Drum Doctor. Just kidding, great show!
wow, I hitted the like button even before the video start. I'm a huge fan of Joey Waronker
17:58 Clive Deamer
The best!

I love Joey’s style. Loved him as part of Roger’s band.
Is something from that Tour available to see here on UA-cam?
@@mitchagain9057 go to Roger Waters’ youtube channel.
@@tonyrapata good idea ;) thank you! :)
Just don't play rim shots is pretty much his "style".
Has anyone noticed that Ross's voice sounds like Tommy Chong?
ha ha ha . thats Great ..and looks like....Jeff Bridges
Ha!
His dad, Lenny is a well known record producer!
Hitting the drums quieter during recording allows the drum to breath. You can really squeeze more tone out of the preamps and compressors.
Need a drum tech??
Give a hollar!!
Don’t forget the Linzer tarts Freddy needed his linzer tarts and his cigarettes I studied with Freddy for over 35 years weekly and I know exactly what you’re talking about I was his whipping post I was his delivery boy I had to stay with him Overnight but I learned So much From him during those overnight sessions because he Would open up about Drumming and Drumming technique he would do this just to keep me there
I wish I had a dollar fo everything I had to go to Bea’s bakery for him and Morts deli next-door
See the thing about Freddy as you didn’t just study with him you Apprenticed with him! you know “wax on wax off”he was the Miyagi sensei of the drums in
I sure wish I could’ve called Jim Keltner up lol.
💙💙💙

Play Johnny Cash with Nylon brushes is great train beat.
That hi-hat is DRY.
Waronker , not Warneker
Good friends 😂🫠

😎👍🇺🇸🥁⚕💣 ROSS
His dad, Lenny Waronker, is one of the biggest music industry people in history, and a really good record producer.
You can tell he wanted to say something when the host mispronounced his last name.
JW rules and also sounds like Butthead...
Sorry but that snare did not appeal to me at all!
I use to live in Brazil you can't voice your political voice especially if you're not a resident.
Sure you can! Sadly, not without being repressed by those who think The Wall is an album about construction.
