OTR Vol. 3 - Jim Keltner - Part 2
In part two of their conversation, Ross Garfield AKA "the Drum Doctor" and Jim Keltner discuss their experiences in the studio and on the road with Neil Young, The Traveling Wilburys, Bob Dylan and John Lennon, while dropping some useful wisdom about music and life.
Jim's wisdom to consider:
1. Always be prepared.
2. You can find unique sounds anywhere. Keep your ears open and have fun.
3. Nerves are your friend. Use them to your advantage.
4. Get out of your own way and get out of your head.
5. You reap what you sow.

Met Ross in 1992 when the band that hired me, Garden of Joy, got signed to SBK. Moved from Sweden and got an endorsement deal with Pearl. Ross pimped my MLX and BLX kits and made them sound incredible. He served me, a nobody drummer, equally to all these superstar clients of his. Sweetest guy ever. I'm so pleased to learn that his business has flourished all these years. Hardly surprising, given how incredibly talented and knowledgeable he is...

Rock'n'Roll ... I love it. it was great listening to you and i appreciate your mind Jim, as well as your playing . it's inspiring. I dig what you were saying about the reaping and the sowing ... I do tend to go by that, but man, sometimes people are not appreciative of kindness or a helping hand ... it's the oddest thing. none the less I keep living by that golden rule. but I do feel like a stranger in a strange land sometimes ... anyway, keep rockin. many blessings. you guys are super cool. Thanks for sharing this video.

Ross .I'm Alan Zukor. You work with my Nephew Joey Waronker. I was his his first drum teacher at nine years old. Taught him his first two years. He got so good so fast that I felt I taught him all I could . I then turned him over to my great drummer buddy Jim Carnelli who was much better at jazz then I was . I thought it was important for Joey to be more well rounded and be familiar with all styles of drumming. It was like God himself touched Joey's soul. It was literally astounding how good he got. He practiced and practiced & always nailed his lessons. I NEVER had to ask if he studied his lessons because it was obvious he had. I knew when he was 13nyears old this was goung to be his calling & his profession & livelihood. Joey made me so proud . We're going to connect this summer & I'm giving him my mint Peavey pro 1000 7 pc kit with a snare drum that will totally BLOW his mind and yours as well. I saw an interview with you & Joey on the way to a Roger Waters show in Sacramento. You asked him how he got started. He mentioned me in that interview. I almost shit my pants cause I never thought he would give me a cudo because I'm not Poccaro. But it was so cool. I'm in Reno gigging still at 74 years old.

What makes a good groove? I’ll tell y’all: call up the blues medley during Whole Lotta Love from the How The West Was Won LZ cd. At some points they pull it down and stretch it (the beat) out to the unrecognizable. Here’s where the importance of Bonzo is never better recognized. He never once loses “the groove.” Not losing your place and keeping proper time. That’s what makes a great groove IMO. He (Bonzo) was a tremendous blues drummer in every sense. Without him this would’ve been an overt disaster. He made whatever Page and Plant wrote, work. We’re talking about four of England’s most technically adept players here. This is why Zeppelin had no equal.

A live version of Sheep came into my feed a month ago, from Rogers’ 22-23 Not A Drill tour. I’ve known this song over 30 years…but didn’t know the current drummer of it. It was Joey. Good God Almighty above…what a drummer! Immediately I fell for his feel, time, fills and groove maintaining. Side note: I saw a Gordon Lightfoot film and commenting in it was a Lenny Waronker. I wasn’t surprised at all from there….

Spon on about other musicians responsible for the groove as well. Oh man how many times I wanted to quit playing just because the folks I ended up playing with were duds. And sometimes you play with an “untrained” guy who has “soul” in his simple strumming, and you experience that bliss..❤
