    I love that you said this about the calendar!! I have said the last few years that ALL farmers, big and small, need to go by the season and the plants and throw that calendar out! Keeping up with estimated frost dates is great but the rest, go by the plants!
    I so love this channel more with every video! I am off from a knee replacement for the next 8-12 weeks. I am binge watching this channel and a couple others. Love the older videos too!
    God Bless!!

    Thank you for this vidio... garlic is about ready to harvest here as well. Last year I minced and froze individual pucks which I have really enjoyed. This year I will be freeze drying!

    You are a wealth of knowledge for such a young lady. Thanks for this video. I'm bout to harvest my first garlic crop. Crossing my fingers for at least a few good cloves. Mine too were store bought. ❤

    Do you know about how many cloves you plant for the year? Also, I use the scapes and sea salt or kosher salt to make garlic salt in my oven!

      I had to go back and watch the planting video to remember LOL. It was between 70-80 cloves. :)

    I have been trying to grow garlic for years with bad results. Around what month should one give phosphorus to garlic?

    • @foodprepguide
      @foodprepguide  21 день тому +1

      Historically, I have fed with phosphorus around mid-May, but phosphorus should be applied just before garlic starts bulbing - whenever that may be - but it's typically mid-to-late spring.
      I also amend the soil with nitrogen and phosphorus before planting, too.

    Do you ever process the garlic leaves? Can they be processed? Thanks!

    • @foodprepguide
      @foodprepguide  22 дні тому +1

      No, I don’t. I’ve used the scapes but not the leaves. I have tasted a leaf, just out of curiosity, and it’s not really garlicky.

    How long did you freeze the garlic.
    Is the electric vacuum sealer safe?
    Freeze-dried garlic is lasting for how long in the jars?

    • @foodprepguide
      @foodprepguide  15 днів тому

      I think the freeze dryer ran for just over 24 hours.
      The electric vacuum sealer is safe to use on dried goods. Do you have a particular concern about it that I can address more specifically?
      Freeze-dried foods, when properly dried and stored, can last for decades. We just need ours to last til next year’s garlic harvest. 🙂

    Do you know if you can preserve fresh garlic in oil without first curing the bulbs? I know you freeze dried your bulbs (life goals!) but could it be done without curing? Typically I fully cure mine, mince the bulbs and store it in the refrigerator in oil. However, this year I have a persistent mouse problem in my greenhouse and it turns out, mice like garlic! I was wondering if I could harvest the bulbs and immediately mince them without curing. Any tips or advice you could give would be appreciated. Cheers!

      That's a great question. Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. I've never done it, and I haven't researched it, so I can't say for sure. I know when I'm making herb-infused oils, I have to dry the herbs and/or flowers first because their moisture content can cause mold to grow where the oil meets the air. I wonder if that would be the same with garlic? 🤷‍♀️
