The no powers no hands argument is pretty crazy because most shonen protagonists are still superhumans even without their powers.
I’m surprised it’s so shocking to ppl since you can see these characters flying against walls with force that cracks the cement, etc. and it’s seen as normal. Off the bat superhuman.
That’s also why the argument that ppl have over how women shouldn’t be strong in these fantasy worlds cuz “MaGiC” and how it doesn’t exist irl is also so dumb.
and then you got people with vastly wild takes on how to split/clump certain traits as "power" or not. Some folk really make anything above normal as 'power' while some try and specifically find some weird way to make something count as a power like needing a special resource or is a limited cooldown.
They are superhuman and peak human at the same time. And some of them are Aliens, demons, vampires, and have all sorts of different biology and shit. 😂😂
Reminds me of a video someone did on how strong Deku is before/without OFA and bro is a monster by human standards
@@BlackOwlMage Why is everyone gaslighting to believe most mha characters are gun level 😭😭
Whenever I hear “no powers” I take it as they’re fighting with human level stats, I hate when people say they’d still be able to punch at super sonic speed like that’s not a power
Legit tho 🤣🤣
It depends if the story states or is not a power then it is not. Some shows super punches are just normal with no powers
People tend to forget that these characters get powers from different magic systems or power sources. Some of their superpowers are genetic based, some of their superpowers are magic based, while other characters get superpowers from training. Most of these characters are still superhuman to us for the most part.
@@jameslight4391Doesnt matter. Can it be done by the strongest humans irl even if to a lesser extent? Not a power.
No? Yes its a power no questions asked. You dont look at what the series ITSELF considers a power.
Thats like asking a millionaire how much he makes so that we can income tax em accordingly. Like what do you think they're gonna say bro?
@@antagonisticalex401 by your definition of what you consider a power Luffy lifting that huge builder even though his powers were turned off is a power because a irl human can't do that.
I consider what isn't a power to be something that is genetics and has no external power helping.
People acting as if lifting a car with their bare hands and running fast enough to catch a bullet aint a power
That’s why I say “isekai’d to the real world and nerfed to irl human lvl”
Edit: power line
Beautifully worded 😂
Exactly it makes the conversation less annoying
So regular people who just happen to look exactly like them, but not really them XD
@@Steven-eu7pi They have their personality
@@darrienjones8917 Let’s hope they do XD
When i hear "no power" i only look at their skills nothing else
That's kinda having both No Powers & Status Equalised
@@aleanddragonITA yeah, that's the point. To bring them down to realistic levels appropriate to their build and determine who's the better fighter off pure skill.
Edit: Power Line
would Garou be considered as having no power? (pre-god’s gift of course, just the hero hunter version) or do any Baki characters be considered as “No Power” just skilled individuals
In fact would you consider chakra, Ki, Reishi or any other form of anime energy as something you would call a “Power” because if it is then normal bodily function such as electrolytes, endorpines, dopamines, neurons, adrenaline, etc. would be considered as “Powers”
@@mkian8434
Garou got Monster-Cells & turned into a Monster
When he has the Black Bandage provided by the Monster Association, those where made with Monster Cells
@@mkian8434
Anime energies like Ki, Reishi, Nen are not Powers (Chakra it's different because it's not Natural, it's artificially produced by the Otsutsuki through the God-Tree)
But the ability to use it is considered a Power
So Goku cannot use The Kamehameha or enhance his strength with Ki
Fun fact-if OG dragon ball there’s a character named wolf man who enters one of the tournament, who called himself a 24 DAN level martial artists
& Jackie Chun made him look silly before he helped cure him 😭
excuse me that’s man wolf
there’s a distinction in universe
:)
24th dan in japanese system would mean you trained for 300 years.
I mean why not if you are immortal ?
That would get you the cleanest technics ever achieved, but you won't grow much strength and speed out of it past the first 20 years.
POWERLINE!
But yeah, when I hear "No Powers", my brain thinks "Anything a human would not be able to do, IRL"
Yes, if we include the more outrageous stuff humans have been shown to do, otherwise it's not even just no powers, but just an average Joe, or at best equilised stats.
@@christophermonteith2774 The theoretical human peak is actually insane. So you kind of have to just make them average athletes. That way you can figure out how it would work because we see the average fighter plenty.
@@Merilirem true but to be fair the theoretical human maximum would kill or cripple people after the fact. Or bodies aren't built for maximum output for more the a couple of seconds once in a blue moon
@@Keyofdistenyzgareven whenever we do access our maximum power output once we stop and calm down that hurts which goes into my theory that the kaiohken is just goku accessing on command adrenaline
It's almost like most of these characters aren't human WOAH. You can take away powers but you can't take away saiyan DNA.
All I know is everyone has been sleeping on Doc Oct's hands for years like they didn't see him put in work in Spiderman 2. 😁
HAHA OTTO was BOLD xD
Doc Ock's hands did some work in Spiderman 2, but his muscles were only really shown off in two or three scenes, his posture left a lot to be desired, he spent most of the movie in heavy form-obscuring clothing, and most people were paying more attention to his mechanical arms than his human hands (since his human hands couldn't extend dozens of feet or transform into buzzsaws).
I noticed how easily he shrugged off getting hit in the head with a sack of coins.
Eh, I’d say Spider-Man was going easy on him. Spider-Man was stated to be able to bench press 10 tons. If he went full blast, Otto’s skull would be decorating the bank
@@alphabladelm2011 comics ock took note of it actually when he was in Spidey’s body and punch a villain’s jaw offf with ease
You also gotta consider that most martial arts in worlds in shows like Naruto and One Piece, are going to be designed with superhuman strength in mind and wouldn't work as well with irl human level strength. Three Swords Style and the Strong Fist Style for example
Very Truee
Also Martial Arts designed to use supernatural powers
Like Martian Manhunter is trained to fight using his shapeshifting or DBZ fighters using ki blast.
@@Motorata661I agree, but also don’t on the DB take. Most of them aren’t even trained at all fr, but Krillon, Goku, Yamcha, Tien, etc. those guys were actually trained martial artists that we know trained as one without the utilization of ki at first. But otherwise, yeah, big spittin
Yeah, Star Wars lightsaber fighting looks nothing like real world sword fighting but that's expected when the characters use magic to enhance their stats (the Force is magic) and are constantly trying to read each other's mind to know their moves in advance
@@laytonjr6601 The force is most definitely magic
Bro people need to share this video.
The amount times I see people argue about these scenarios and not understand what no powers means is Infuriating.
Powerline
Powerline. And I agree, I think it would be more like "a power is anything that cannot be reasonably expected for a real life human to perform."
People think they know the actual limits of real humans and they don’t. So by this standard, Ku Yu Cheung/ Gu Ru Zhang (1894-1952, God rest his soul) was a super hero, but we know for a fact that there were multiple people within his sphere and in his life that were even beyond his skill levels but were not as well known or in the public sphere.
@@Dolph-Face You have to go with average humans known because otherwise you have to go ask scientists and they will show you a bunch of numbers that don't make sense looking at the world's top athletes. Humanity still has room to grow before hitting our limits.
@Dolph-Face people think they know human limits but a quirky story on some 💩 news network doesn't mean anything. Humans are as gifted and as limited as everything else on the earth. Most the stuff you see in anime is exaggerated to ridiculous degrees if not just false.
@@Dolph-Face I mean, you may as well just say limited to equal stats. The base level of almost ALL anime fighters is so far beyond what the laws of physics state is possible with the materials that make up a human that the theoretical limit is what they would ALL be nerfed down to.
Heck, the vast majority of them would have to be massively nerfed in order to be equal to a 10 ton hydraulic PRESS...
If the laws of physics state it can't happen, then it is a power, no matter what supposed "alien genetics" or whatever you want to bring in. After that, it does not really matter whether it is an average fit human, or the greatest athlete/martial artist of all time, you are nerfing them down to that same level.
5:15 I don't know why, but the "Holy sh*t, Danny Phantom?" After the ultra instinct thing, made me laugh a lot 😂
Powerline
Glad that did its job 😂
Bro explained a common sense in 8 minute but ironically this is what most anime fans really need cause it look like they don't have it💀
I noticed years ago in Street Fighter that the fighters didn't match their stats. On paper, they're all undersized. I've always preferred skills based comparisons.
Sagat being a perfect example. He’s well in the 7 foot range but barely brakes 200 pounds in some iterations with a physique like his
@@brendanpryce8009 Facts!!! He was the first one I noticed.
That’s really prevalent in anime too, like it’s rare to find any character that’s supposed to weigh more than 150 lbs no matter what they look like and it makes absolutely no sense.
@@kristoferprovencal3608 The authors typically don't understand weights.
@@kristoferprovencal3608 Anime is proof that Asians aren't actually better at math.
An actual “no powers, just hands” fight should be Tokyo Revengers characters vs Wind Breaker characters 🔥
but Tokyo Revengers characters for a normal mma irl fighter would still be too much. Those characters get bodily harms that are worsts than what you would see inside an octagon and those characters just shrugg those said bodily harms the next day.
nah gangsta pretty boy got some superhuman strength
They're still superhuman.
I am pretty sure that they are still superhuman
Please find me people IRL who are actually capable of the stuff that's done in either of those shows. They have physical feats that no real human can actually muster, like Sakura from Wind Breaker casually jumping clean over the heads of an entire group of people to then instantly KO someone with a kick midair and land like nothing happened without so much as a running start. Or when Choji does a spinning jump kick to Togame and sends him flying like 15 feet.
You perfectly explain why I don't like power scaling topics. I mean, they can be fun, but they just as quickly become unfun....
..because even this becomes unfun: At some point you are explaining genetics as a power, (then how do you compare yourself or the real world mythology to that power, is every fight you watch just going to break down into martial arts capability and BMI? how do you then explain any of your own accomplishments?) and at that point it feels like "Who cares really?"
When I hear “no powers” I believe they’re regular humans in the real world with all their skills, height, weight and experience. So Goku 5’9 137 traditional striker vs Baki 5’6 168
MMA fighter
Powerline
I can agree that "No Powers, Just Hands" is ENTIRELY different than "Reduce the characters to a realistic baseline human standards without the plot armor".
I’d be very very surprised if a single reasonable person who posted a picture of characters in MMA gear with the caption “no powers, just hands” meant “no flashy stuff, just their strength, speed, and experience.” 99/100 times, it very obviously means “nothing superhuman (powers), just their skill in fighting, experience, and personality (hands)”
@EternalTriadthePaladin i mean, i think its obviously that the post means no superhuman things, but People want to complicate it
My personal preference for the “no powers” idea is basically the same as your own, especially since it could be interesting to see how they’d approach fights like that.
Even the "no powers" people in some settings are absolutely insane compared to anything in the real world.
In the real world, the best bodybuilders in the world struggle to lift more than a few hundred kilos, the best boxers can easily cause permanent damage to their hands if they don't have proper technique/protection, and the healthiest people all die off within about 120 years.
Meanwhile in anime, people can train by benchpressing ENTIRE FREAKING TRAIN ENGINES, boxers can use old battleships as punching bags AND BREAK THE BATTLESHIPS WITH THEIR FISTS, and the healthiest people are the geriatric drunkard martial artists WHO HAVE BEEN KICKING ASS FOR THE PAST MILLENIA OR LONGER.
It's neat to draw anime characters in the MMA fighting style (since it helps show off the vast majority of their well-earned muscle gains), but even the supposedly """realistic""" animes like Hajime no Ippo would require a LOT of nerfs before they fought in the IRL MMA tournaments just to bring them down within human limits, let alone to truly make them match the power of their particular weight class.
So true about realistic animes. Even the weakest humans in fiction are still superhuman compared to irl humans. Nolan Batman can still beat any UFC fighter.
@@markstriker925 he aint beatin cm punk
Indeed. You see characters without powers in stories like Batman or MHA and they are practically captain America.
Exactly difference in how anime as a whole portrays the strength of a character, and even particular verse's if you have to nerf one side 1000 times more than another then you kinda just look at weight class and skill level since at that point there isn't anything left to go off of
In Ippo the regular punches look like knockout blows and the knockout blows would kill a man.
Great Video Jax and the part you said at 7:45 is so true, Powerscaling online feels less like "Lets have a fun discussion/debate" But more like "I want to feel a win in my life in some way". I feel you mentioned this in a previous video But for some people who powerscale they take it like "If my character loses that means I am loser" and its like no dude. Its basically a battle of imaginary friends, Dont get heated over drawings fighting.
Let’s go, Jaxblade is back!
I just think of it as "If this person existed in real life as a human that just looks like their design but keeps their personality." Basically, if a human looked like them and had their mind. Discard any thoughts if they could not be applied to a real mma fighter. If someone gets pedantic because theyre trying to find a logical hole, ignore them since theyre obviously more concerned with being technically right instead of discussing anything.
Stand out by Powerline
I always thought of the "no powers, just hands" as a "No jutsu, curse fruit, ki blast" kind of thing. Seeing you break it down and include Baki characters in that really makes me reconsider cause yeah, legit never thought about how those feats would be considered powers. I've been enlightened.
Excellent video, Jax. As always laying it on the power line. My favorite version of no powers is similar to yours; it really becomes a contest of personality, style and training/talent at that point.

That over with, just wanted to share that I've started up a long-term fitness journey. Near the end of one of those couch to 5K plans, after which I'll be moving up to a more challenging cardio plan while adding some bodyweight exercises. The plan is to build up from the basics so I can start JaxBlade's "Aim To Pass The American Dream" plan in February. Finish that by Christmas next year. Wish me luck!

@@alphabladelm2011 Thanks! Just finished the first 5K. Not satisfied with my pace, but at least I finished strong. And I can add building up my pace to the next plan's goals!
Personally I just think setting the powerline is impossible.
Like if we take all our favorite characters, take away hacks abilities, take away super speed, strength, endurance and reflexes, and THEN try to decide who would win-
We're talking about completely different people-
Hell, if we count superhuman abilities as powers that also removes super intelligence and all forms of high adaptability.
At a certain point, you're stripping a character of so many of their characteristics, you can't even have a discussion anymore, because then it boils down to "Do you think someone with the height and weight of Mike Tyson but the fighting style of Bruce Lee would win? Or someone with the height and weight of Bruce Lee who does MMA would win?"
There's too many filters to still have flavor, the end result is always gonna be water.
Not only that, but characters that practice a fictional martial art that yields fantastic results (Naruto with Chakra, Goku with Ki, Kenshiro, etc) would only practice that martial art because it yields results for them. If you were to take away the Fist of the North Star from Kenshiro, you are creating a massive gap in experience that would've been occupied by something more realistic.
In these cases, of course "more realistic" fighters would win because Goku has a massive amount of gap years whereas Ohma's less fantastical aspects of martial arts can be boiled down to a well-rounded MMA style.
@@wilwood796 It's also sort of similar to what would happen if you scaled down a jedi or something to human levels, sure they still have SOME swordsmanship abilities, but no human is gonna be cutting bullets or deflecting them anytime soon, so anyone with a ranged fighting style is going to beat them-
It depends. For instance, in the Death Battle between Zangief and Haggar, the main points of Zangief's victory was that, on top of Zangief having better strength feats, he's also younger, taller, heavier and didn't have politics get in the way of his training.
@@M4x_P0w3r For characters where they have a more realistic way of fighting and it's a closer comparison, yeah-
But it's complicated when you're trying to compare someone who is IMPLIED to be one of the best martial artists in fiction, whose preferred fighting style is shooting lasers out of their eyes, against a normal human who knows how to box, on a human level.
It's like saying "No whip and no gun, does Indiana Jones beat Nathan Drake from Uncharted?" Well if you remove a majority of their preferred move set then who knows?
Even among characters in the same universe, it's like asking between Naruto and Sasuke, who is the better hand to hand fighter? As far as we can tell, it's a tie, because every time they only throw hands, it ends in a draw.
@@Dmobley9901In this case, we have to see if their fight styles are enhanced or carried by their powers. Meaning if the extra abilities give an extra oomph to his techniques or if they are the techniques, period. In the case of the former, we can say its a legitimately good fighter. In the case of the latter, he's basically defenseless when fighting on a human level.
And about your proposed scenario, I'd give it to Nathan. While he's not an expert (he loses to Nadine, who is claimed to be an expert) he's otherwise able to easily win fights against pretty much every other goon, including the big guys that Indiana struggles with. Also, I rewatched his classic fight agains the Nazi engineer and Indi overextends and relies on fighting dirty to keep up.
PowerLine. Great to see you thriving. I love your Brave Crest! And yeah, I'm with you, using MMA-like measures is so much better than "only hands no power" like some of these characters are borderline insane on base, before their journey even started! Yuji and Goku are great examples of this.
Powerline, another banger of a discussion that you're passionate about!

Imagine someone said “who’s martial art are you taking to irl MMA (no anime surrealism)”. I can imagine someone who doesn’t know shit about martial arts saying “Taijutsu is realistic so I’m using those techniques” not realizing it takes the specific parts of Wing Chun that DON’T work in PvP, a rookie martial artist saying Agito’s Formless cuz Netflix hasn’t animated _that_ fight yet, and an experienced martial artist saying “Nico-style is real and you can learn it from Karate, Muay Thai, Jiujitsu, and Aikido”
Exactly.

Because thats a power.
Anything a peak built human irl cannot fathom to do is a power.
Can a human punch a hole in the stomach from another human?

If it's official crossover - marketing, if unofficial - fun outrage. But Goku and dbz in general are terrible for this sort of discussions - the show goes from silly chinese martial arts and talking animals to endless powercreep with "new" (just change hair colour) forms. Even UI, the supposed peak of martial prowess - how exactly is it different from the normal way Goku fights? And moreover how does perfect susano fit into fighting automatically without thinking? Some series just aren't for this, you'll have to essentially invent a new variant of a character or deal with so many concessions and balancing weights you might as well make an OC.
@@antagonisticalex401That isn't a power, that's just a Saiyan's natural strength, that's like saying that because an ant can life 3x their weight is a power, it isn't it's just their innate capabilities.
As a lifelong martial artist, I agree with many of your sentiments. I think of Deadpool who, before gaining the mutant regeneration that he is known for, was commonly described at being at the edge of human physical capability across the board. Thinking this way, we reset the line of homeostasis; I can imagine these fighters individually performing at an Olympic level in most regards, but touching the edge of human capability in one or two areas to differentiate them from each other. PowerLine, brother!
Loved the video. Powerline!!!!
For me the "no powers" rule is just a MMA cage match at a human level, it's way more interesting to discuss martial arts of each character, i personally don't take weight into account otherwise it would be pretty unfair, reach is fine.
I like comparing combat skill alone in this type of discussion.
Powerline.
True but what if the skull is relative reach and weight matter alot
The problem with "No Powers, only real life Human level" is that it would vastly change the body structure of every character.
Like Goku works out non-stop.
He would become Heavy Weight and he would look like his Saiyan Saga Kaioken X3
P-powerline?
This reminded me of that "Superman Fights Muhammad Ali" comic from back in the day. I forget what the actual reason for the fight was, just that it genuinely _was_ Superman with "no powers, just hands" (i.e. depowered to regular, albeit physically-fit, human, needing to train to box, and obviously still losing to the more-experienced Ali).

Thank you for pointing this out!😂🙏
I'm a day late to this one, but you had me at "equal stats". That's how I'm gonna look at it from now on.
Powerline.
The fun way I like looking at this is looking the character's physical attributes and finding some fighter irl that matches similar to them and just giving the character's their stats and then stacking whatever skill they have on top of that
Pretty sure the “no powers, just hands” means their actual hand to hand ability, so we are not talking about super strength and speed and what not, just straight technical ability
I always assumed they meant "stats equalized" so it's actually determined by Technique and Skill as opposed to the One-Shot and Speed-Blitz fest just "no powers/special abilites" would offer.
I understand the super strength and speed and what not. But I never thought of fighting techniques as "powers". But you are right. Like imagine all of them at the same strength, height and weight and Hayato Furunji would body everyone by skill alone. That man could double jump, throw people like shuriken, and give you amnesia. Those are definitely super powers.
Love the three amigos clip in there
Bro where did you get that hat? I love it
POWERLIIIINE! Listen......thank you for always being here whenever I decided to push past My depression and get back on my nerdy anime training arc❤❤❤
I’m glad you talked about this because it’s always frustrating when talking to people about how these fights would just play out; I prefer talking about no powers and strictly just hand combat. A lot of these characters literally have extraordinary abilities that are way above what an actual human being has the capability of doing (even within their own universe)-- yet some people still act like they don’t have powers 😂. Not just hypothetical anime discussions but in superhero discussions too.
I am so happy and glad you talked about this I've been seeing straight hands and no powers on Twitter for a while to I was hoping somebody would explain this to me to how can you have a fight with no superpowers but with powers you get to keep your life base abilities and stuff like martial arts and other stuff😂😂😂
Sir u had me subscribed @ 5:10
Solid point, I guess the rules of the fight need to be established before having a "No Powers, Just Hands" debate.
Powerline! I like trying to discuss it with no super strength or speed. Like thinking about whether Might Guy or Goku would be the superior martial artist on a technical level just seems like it would be a cooler conversation. Though if they tried over training like they do in anime they would be competing to see who ends up in the hospital the soonest.
Cool Powerline stuff, it's also a bit tricky to estimate the strength and reflexes if brought to human levels. Some of these characters still stand out in one regard to their physique.
I'd also love to see Minoru Kagenou participate in these MMA rounds. The dude's been able to train in all sorts of martial arts and wield weapons expertly well before he got isekai'd and became the Eminence in Shadow. Might be a bit tough for him to fight some of these prodigious martial artists but he may keep up.

Also I think the MMA version of no power is the best, especially if you practiced some martial arts irl comparing 2 characters that way is just so much fun.

I always said we need theme music in real life. It would spice up so many situations lol
I like the "Bring them down to normal human limits" more than allowing the atlas factor stuff or anything beyond what we can feasibly do. Cause the scale of how high or low those goes really changes depending on the verse so it gets really complicated, and while it is fun to compare the base lines of the various races or verses, when they are at the level we understand then we can discuss fighting ability in a way that doesn't have as much confusion about it. It's more understandable and we can even look to real life examples to see how things can play out and it helps visualize it more in my opinion
People just like to loophole it to make their favorite character win. If you are punching holes through people. You have super strength. Point blank period.
Always a blessing when Kenshiro gets acknowledged
Powerline
Great vid
0:46 bro just pulled out my childhood memories with this one
(Context for "gringos": This is an old brazilian animation from a Channel named "Rebosteio")
What I love are characters who have powers that have nothing to do with enhanced physical strength but since the baseline of strength is the show is so high, they also have to be naturally strong
I feel like "Which Fighting Style/Skillset Wins?" would be better. Problem with that is: except for a few people (including the youtuber who's a sensei to Jaxblade, in a way), the people who can actually breakdown fighting styles and fighters usually don't wander into the anime sphere.
I think one of the best ways to compare it is when looking at the character fighting someone on an equal level, to the point where they both seem normal compared to each other. When they basically slow down the fight speed to the point where a human can watch it normally. Also, power line.
I made it here Jax!!!
I'm happy to see you did :D
Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf is an excellent example of an anime where people push the line of superhuman. But the fight choreography that they animated is amazing. It makes you believe that a human being could do what they're doing.
Bro went Canadian with that “Fitness-eh” 😂
Power line great video
I love how much time we anime fans put into how stronk our favorite characters are
I want to hear Jax’s thoughts on Buhurt
