Over 300 rounds, and not all went smoothly. This new Carry Contour model of the famous Springfield TRP line is built to be carried - but does it have what it takes? Full detailed review with range testing and some conclusions.

On a positive note, those ammo failures demonstrated your superb trigger control. That gun was still as glass!!
The closeup camera shots on this channel are appreciated.
Thanks! Your appreciation is appreciated! :)
I’ve had quite a bit of problems with S&B ammo lately but mostly with 9 mm. Beautiful 1911! Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
After watching the reviews I really want one. Optics cuts really don't matter to me. Great review.
Thanks Justin great review
Bring SlugFest back Justin. Great review !
Thanks for the video.
As usual, wonderful video. Looking sharp as well J! Thank you taking the time and effort. Well done. I bought my SA Emissary after your review. As well as my CZ P10F Comp. I sold the CZ and bought a few custom Tanfoglios but I’ve kept the Emissary. It’s so accurate and easy to shoot accurately.
Good review. I have several Springfield 1911s and found with my commander size Ronin that the stock mag was my problem. Tried with two WC mags and two Ed Brown mags with no issues at all; and once Springfield replaced the mag that came in the box I never ran into any feeding or cycling problems again. The Springfield 1911s are well built and fairly priced. The new TRP looks great!
Thanks for the review. I liked it and it helped me with my decision to get one.
Thank you - that really is my primary objective - to provide helpful information.
You post i like and watch always a good break
Very relevant review.
Good review Dave. Springfield makes some nice 1911's. I have a few. As someone who daily carries a government sized 1911 in 45 acp and have for years, I tend to shy away from ones that that have less than 5" barrel and in other calibers other than 45 acp. I also prefer an all steel frame and slide. But that's just me. I have found the Wilson Combat magazines are the best for my 1911's and have never had any issues. Your mileage may vary. I always enjoy your content. Stay well.
Thanks!
Same sentiments here on the WC mags. I also EDC a .45 1911, though Commander length (an Ed brown Kobra Carry). Love the caliber and gun. I seriously think, for a civilian EDC, the current obsession with capacity is a weird fetish. 🙄🤣
I absolutely need to add one of these to my safe. I'm surprised these aren't optics ready, however. Another excellent review, as always. 😁
excellent trigger discipline when you squeezed what you thought was a live one. nice....
Thanks 👍 I can be guilty of milking sometimes, or even the occasional flinch - but I try to keep it managed.
I’d defiantly keep it. I have an sig nightmare ( all steel) and it’s a good a pistol as my Ed Brown. Nice comprehensive review 👍🏻😅
Pretty interesting. If I put my sig 1911 carry 4.2 next to Springfield close to a look a like. Except the Sig has no refrigerator, dishwasher, or a/c attachment rail. Sig no failures in any of the 8 round magazines. Two oem and numerous Wilson Combat mags. I did pickup two chip McCormick 8 round spwith out the bulging base plates of the Wilson’s or the oem magazines. I have not fired the weapon with the chip McCormick mags yet. Didn’t make much sense to me have a rounded butt and then through in magazines the go out further than the rounded butt. So ends the myth with imprinting if that’s the reason. So with the McCormick mag it sits flush without going past the rounded butt just like the old 7 round mags 1911 did. One noticeable difference on the Sig is the external extractor. Btw I enjoy your Opinion very much. You shoot and tell it like it is the good, bad and ugly of a weapon. 👍
I don’t like tan guns but Springfield some how makes these trp and the xdm elites look good, they are wicked looking pistols
Been eying the older version of the TRP with rail, 9mm, those around 1000 bucks, TRP Operator around 1400-1500, not a fan of bobtail but I do like the all black 5”, a little pricey but nice, Springfield is really good with their 1911’s, lots of price ranges to choose from, well done as always. All the best!
I don't believe the TRP is available in 9mm...
It is, not new version, old version, plenty on Gunbroker
@@ADJ1229my apologies you are correct, I was looking at Operator, not TRP Operator
@@mikemccauley8089 all good man. I would really love one in 9mm. I've got a gray model from a few years back. I should bring it out today just because.
That is a nice gun..
NICE LITTLE PISTOL GREAT LOOKING AND NICE COLOR AND SEEMS TO LIKE YOUR HAND LOADS WHAT COULD BE BETTER THEN THAT
Love it. Good morning, Justin. Yea, I guess ether you got a bad box of S&B or she just don't like running it. I've shoot a little over 2,000 total of S&B in my shadow systems MR920L, Smith&Wesson M&P9 2.0 4.25 metal and rock island tac ultra fshc 45acp dubble stack. If you haven't shot PSA ammo yet. Give it a try. Good dam ammo. 👍🇺🇸. What I like about PSA with their ammo. That they produce their own primers. After over 2,500 rounds of 380acp, .308, 45acp and 9mm. Not, 1 issue so far.
Yeah, I was puzzled. I have shot S&B for years with no problems, but this issue was clearly limited to only that ammo.
@JustinOpinionChannel Good evening, Justin. Happy. 😎🤘 THUNDER STRUCK 🤘😎 Thursday. That's one of my things now on thrusday. Is to play AC/DC song - thunder struck -. Love that song. Yea, S&B always been good to me. Maybe you just got a bad box of ammo. I'd contact S&B and give them the lot # on your box. Maybe they can hook you up with a new box if that lot # and issue
Watching this video again, and about close to the end there i got think 🤔... how about doing a comparison with other pistol that have that bobtail cut design. That be a cool video to do
SA magazines do NOT match the quality of their excellent TRP pistols.
As for the S&B ammo...that's weird! I've shot thousands and thouands of rounds of their .45ACP ammo in practice and competitions with NEVER a single bad round.
Nice review. Thanks!
I just picked up the black version of this pistol and am having the same issue with light hammer strikes every 3rd round. I talked with Springfield and they are sending me a new main spring and a new recoil spring. The weight for the main spring is 19# and the recoil spring is 20# after i switch them out i will repost my findings. its a tack driver when it works but every 3rd round has a issue. I think it is short stroking, I might try a 18# recoil spring before I send it back in.
*update* after receiving the springs from S.A. I did notice that the main spring in the gun was a lot shorter . After replacing the main spring and recoil spring i went back to the range and the gun did not have any light primer strikes. I did run 3 1/2 boxes of ammo through it, white box fmj, federal fmj. Remington fmj and some herters fmj . I now have a total of 250 rounds through the gun and it is very nice. now that it is broken I did clean and oil it and rechecked the trigger weight and it sits a little over 3lbs. I'm very happy with it.
I know the price is steep but the end product in my opinion is verry nice. Hope this helps.
A Dan Wesson ECP or Guardian would be a good comparison to this pistol since they have bobtail frames and are similar in barrel length. If you want to compare this to something with a rail, perhaps the Dan Wesson TCP would work well. At the price point for this TRP pistol, I would compare it to all of these Dan Wesson models before buying.
Dan Wesson's have really skyrocketed in price.
It's very true that the current TRP offerings overlap with Dan Wesson's offerings big time. You can get a Specialist cheaper than the current TRP and that comes with zero mim parts and a better overall product imo (I own 3 DW's). Though I won't knock SFA on their higher end 1911's as they do know how to make them well but like you I'd focus on a DW first.
This Springfield looks identical & performance to my old Sig Emperor Scorpion fastback.
Yep - very similar design for sure.
In your next video could you do some close ups with the 8rd mags?
What powder do you use for 45?
Is it really worth more than the dan wesson tcp? I'm trying to decide which one to buy. The tcp is running 1,850.
I already have a Hed2Hed planned with those two!
Hey Justin, which State are you from? I always notice that's almost constantly windy and chilly in your videos.
Not "from", but live in Delaware. It's a miserable godawful place that people sometimes pass through when traveling between DC and NYC. But at least our govmint sucks.
I wish I could see their sales by model. I suspect they won’t sell too many of these.
Cool pistol but seems like almost a direct copy of a Sig Sauer Emperor Scorpion Fastback.
Hi again. If you had to choose between a TRP or a Dan Wesson Specialist, which would you choose? Thanks, Mike
Well do you have any other 1911s?
Trp by far. Dan Wesson is mid grade at best.
I own a Specialist and have went over the new TRP at my local shop. The DW is a higher quality with zero mim parts but the TRP feels very solid as well. Good tuned grip safety, manual safety and barrel lug and bushing fit. I'd say either one will serve you well. Though the Specialist is only in stainless or black melonite duty finish whileas the coyote finish is just beautiful in person. The Specialist commander version of it is all steel vs an aluminum lower. The Specialist can also be had with an optics cut though.
I got to the misfires and stopped there. A $2k gun should go bang every time the trigger is pulled. This saved me a ton of money because I really want(ed) a TRP. Will find one of the older variants.
It's not the gun! It's the ammo.
federal ammo never misses, at least in my experience
Those are nice sunglasses, what brand are those?
4:53 I feel that
Seems to have very consistent ejection, most commanders will pop you in the forehead every now and then.
Im in. Two local shops trying to actually get their hands on one for me. Still not in hand. I do think they come in a hard shell case , not a soft zipper pouch...... Have a 4.25 Ronin in 9 mm , lots of jams.... Wilson Combat spring helped , but still a little disappointing...
Come on now dude its in 9mm what did you expect I've seen every manufacturer have problems with there 9mm 1911s.
So it's a bobtail commander with M45 styling? Cute, but probably not worth the price tag.
what are those glasses and lenses?
Dillon
I like the TRP series, but i wish Springfield had brought the CC version rail to be a full rail, like the new 4.25 Emissary, or the TRP Operator.
Very nice. A 2K gun w/ no optics cut & no rail is silly.
It has a rail. Not everyone wants to use an optic. The price is a bit high though.
The federal's seemed to have a little more power.
Also why didnt it come with 8 rounders?
Sellier and Bellot has been bought by CZ, so maybe they'll improve their ammo.
Between this and the vbob, I gotta go vbob
Are you talking about the ED Brown v bob?
I've seen one other gun review of this gun and thought it came in a Pelican type case with cut foam insert. For 2K, that's what it should be...
That was special packaging for an elite few reviewers. I'm not on that list - was lucky to get a loaner. ;-)
I want one but my kimber won't let me.
What!!!!!! The kimber that has the worst reputation of problems with their 1911s and that series 80 safety firing pin black?
It's sad how worthless our money has become in 3 short years.
My sentiment is this....money printer go brrrrrr
One of the best quotes in 3 yrs...
And none of the alleged 84 million will admit it
Bidenomics 😂
If youre not winning in 2024 that’s on you! I’m Making money regardless who is in! Blaming your stream of income on another man is the biggest cop out ever😂
Nice gun, however not for me. I'd rather have the new Garrison 4.25" in blued finish. I have a Dan Wesson with 20 lpi on the front strap. Not my favorite without gloves
For that price it ought to be dlc coated.
💯
Also an FTF. Jesus, get your shit together Springfield.
I’d pay. $1400 but not $1900.
Gun looks cool AF, but capacity these days is important. Should have been made as a 2011 but choice rules. If someone wants a compact carry .45 - great. IMO, it's priced pretty steep for what it is. I'd love to see a 10mm double-stack with these cosmetics in a 2011.
Only John wick movie lovers think they need to carry 100 rounds.
Glad they didnt do optic cut crap. Dots dont belong on 1911s or pistols period.
😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡🤡
You had me at, Springfield TRP! Your no good for my wallet!!
For Two Grand single stack is a Deal Breaker . Have plenty of those left over .
Fitted MIM parts for well over $1000 no thanks
Lol gtfoh. Mim is 100%. Boomer no doubt.
I'm sure its a fine pistol, but for that price, get a Dan Wesson 1911 which uses all tool steel parts and is considered semi-custom. Even Tisas 1911s use all tool steel internal parts and the fit and finish is just as good as the TRP, if not better -- and for $350!!
Dan Wesson doesn’t have the reputation for making 1911’s that run as great as Springfield.
Tisas lmao
And I believe you got some shit ammo
Meh
For that price...And all small parts are mim or cast with a polymer trigger!?..GTFO of here SA.
