How I Keep Sunlight Out of the Gameroom

- The sun may sustain life, but that's offset by the fact that it fades game systems and game packaging. In this shady video, I attempt to improve my methods of blocking out all the harmful rays coming from the burning ball of gas in the sky.

Next video: Tips for gamers who live around binary star systems.
Can't wait
What
Well technically😁..... Alpha Centari is "around"....With it being a triple Star system it must really cause havoc to collectors.
Made in Abyss?
Isn't this self explanatory You block it with the moon.
Just got out of a college lecture, now it's time to watch one of my favorite youtubers
This is definitely higher education stuff going on in the video.
You always seem to make the most mundane things enjoyable to watch.
I think I'd just watch this dude go about his regular life! I do like gaming but I think it's the dude that's most interesting
I have 4 windows in my gaming room, and you are absolutely right about sunlight changing the viewable colors when gaming. I appreciate your work and your continued passion to share with others.
Thanks for addressing the everyday problems that plague everyday people just trying to enjoy life and our games. Appreciate the video!
UV reflective/protective glass for the windows seems like the most reasonable solution for a game store. For a gaming room - depends on your TV setup vs. the windows position. Anyway, this way irrelevant of the light, you would be sure that they do not get damaged.
I love how interesting your videos are! So glad I found your channel.
Advance Auto now carries 2.5% window tint that would block the damages of the sun and also allow you to look out. That's what I used. I believe its $20.00 a roll and a roll would do those 4 window sashes.
That was pretty interesting, especially the game case getting faded. Never really thought about sun damage, will now have to consider it. Thank you!
Also incidentally good advice for anyone with a vampire room mate.
I had one of those once. He always complained when I cooked things with garlic in it.
Next video: see what happens when you leave a gamer in a window for months
This is the most wholesome gaming video on the internet.
For some it's creepy. LOL.
Really enjoying the content, thank you sir. Keep up the great work.
Hmmm. Just paint the windows with the wall paint. Then you'll have the flex of opening for ventilation and fire escape when necessary.
Another great video Kevin, I would tint the windows with 02 or even better: stick dark wrapping directly on the glass. That way you wont need to make it a flat surface.
For the tape it should be stuck on the window frame if that was metal, they will peel and fall off if stuck on painted surface like the wall
Single handedly help preserve Retro games for everyone.. I really appreciate this!!
This is the tackiest thing I've ever seen...and I love it. I can't look away
Tip...if you need cardboard boxes you can go to any liquor store and ask and 90% of the time they are happy to give you all you can carry.
"It's like virtual reality out there" 😆
there used to be a local retro store that had original console boxes from all the 90s consoles--SNES, Genesis Sega CD, Saturn, etc.--right up front in the window. all were sun bleached to hell and back, to the point where a few more years probably would have rendered the front sides completely unrecognizable :(
Did you look into UV window film? At best it could supplement your cardboard plus filter out UV light which is the main fading culprit.
To hold the card board in you can buy thin strips of wood and tack them in with very small brads (nails). You would find these in the millwork and panel molding dept of a home improvement center.
For one window you are look at maybe $35? depending on how dark you want the film to be.
I'm glad I'm not the only one worried about sun fading damage to games and other products
i dont get light in my game room except when the rat chewed through the wall
I use black poster board. So instead of cutting for the entire window around the edge I cut for the window itself. I also use blinds and dark out curtains.
More guaranteed to get wet if you do that directly on the window. Depends on the climate though I suppose whether the moisture would be enough to cause you to have to replace it frequently. Up here in the cascade mountains it would definitely become wavy in 3-5 years time doing that.
2:10 forget the sun, I find it hard to believe a local retro store has a Gamecube lineup that incredible!
The retro video game stores should invest in UV Glass for their stores. That would keep the games from becoming faded.
This video makes me wanna cover all my windows with cardboard. and i don't even have a gameroom!
My game room has one window in it and I've really never had an issue with anything fading not even my SNES has turned yellow like most.
I used poster board and tin foil. Sprayed some spray glue, applied foil to the board and then gorilla taped it to the windows. Poster boards are the exact same size as my window panes. 100% effective.
Oh another benefit to my method is while it's 100% effective blocking the light I can still open and close the windows.
@Figeenie Spottybag Negative.
I see that too, literally every game store I've ever been to has tons of windows. It's like you're freeing the games from a even more severe sunburn by buying them.
I tend to embrace the sunlight although I did delete a broken window with closet doors. Looks terrible but were going to build a mud room there anyways so it wont matter. One window in my living room I always leave the curtain on because it shines where my console & TV are but Vitamin D is good so I like to get sunlight into the house. If I had that many systems setup like that though I believe I would do the same.
another great video buddy!
If where you're at gets heatwave hot in the summer , aluminum foil is the best way to keep sunlight out AND some heat . The foil can make the room a little cooler .
I have 2 big windows in each of my 2 rooms and direct sunlight will come through it affecting everything and heating the rooms, I have blinds but it wont block it, so I installed Roller garage door panels outside, it's expensive but it'll do the work perfectly and keeps the room's temperature down, and It's electric powered I can roll it whenever I want.
On a similar note , comic shops have been known to keep comics displayed in the sunlight fading covers badly . Growing up , my local comic shop had some of their valuable covers in a case near a window and they were super bleached out . I used to think "they're never going to sell those faded comics" and they probably never did . Part of the problem was that the comics were overpriced and never moved . I've also seen shops hang comics up on the walls where they'd be exposed . I also know that indirect sunlight will fade things as well . I keep my front room shades closed all the time because it gets really sunny and hot in there and even in that room I had some issues with sun damage . I always thought that the shades would block anything harmful . I've had to put dark curtains over that to try to help . I like the light , but sunlight is just too damaging .
I use a big TV box! You're right...best size and thickness....that's what she said....
(i typed that before I'd heard you say it 🤣)
Fun fact, I had other that's what she saids in the video, but I cut them down to one.
I use vinyl roller shades and black out curtains in combination and they don't let any sunlight in at all. To be fair you wont get that flat look, but it looks nice regardless.
i got black curtains and black posterboard taped to the bottom of my door lol. The Black Posterboard mightve worked really well in the windows
Neighbors: A vampire lives next door.
I've seen those before, they were called curtains
Would it just be easier put blinds up and blackout curtains maybe
I did something similar in a previous house, but it had casement windows which made the cardboard extremely obvious from the outside. My solution for that was to put white poster board in the window first and then the cardboard over that. I just used painter's tape to hold it all in place. From the outside, it just looked like a window with a shade drawn. Before I listed the house for sale, I just peeled the tape off and threw it all away.
Also... I've heard people caution against putting dark colored backgrounds directly behind the window glass (particularly of double pane windows). The concern is that the dark color will cause the air between the panes to heat up, expand, and blow the seals out. I think cardboard is about as a dark as I'd personally risk.
Perhaps I should do the masking tape blinds to brighten the surface.
@@GamingTheSystems1 Or just let your freak flag fly and paper the windows with valueless sports games. 😆
You can buy clear UV blocking film that you can put over your window, that allows the light in but stops the damaging UV. I think they use it in museums, it isn't too expensive.
Having the same issue in my game room with trying to block the sun.
Huh, I never thought about it but there are a few game stores near my house where they completely block the windows and now I know why. I probably did realize it at some time but forgot.
This is the kind of stuff I gotta do with my shelves and walls. Little fixes always help
I have one faded game in my collection, FEAR for PS3.
The spine is dull due to the game being located near the entrance of the store I bought if from.
9:35 Took the words right out of my mouth.
That’s a bad azz one eyed cat. Great vid bruv
Bro, your videos are very niche, but interesting as hell!
I want that "enjoy them all" shirt....
I'd say get some foam board. It'd help with insulation as well as block light.. You could paint the side facing the window and it'd look fine.
If you don't care about how it looks, I remember people using aluminum foil to black their windows out in college. Seemed to work well.
you should get your cat a eye patch and call him Big Boss.
I put a blanket over my window in my room so the sun will not shine in and fade all my collectibles is that a good solution or is the sun still shining through the blanket it seems pretty good to me
Love the game room man.
I just put uv protection film on my windows and blinds.
The 8-Bit Guy did a video a while back where he used a UV blocking film that he applied to his windows that he purchased from Home Depot or Lowes. Have you thought about a UV blocking film so you could have some sunlight in the room and also protect your games?
I would rather not have the reflections on the TV screens, nor the worry of whether or not the filtering was working.
@@GamingTheSystems1 it works. You just need to make sure it’s 99% UV filtering. Tested on one of my games like you did, no fading.
Also you can buy ones that additional block specific percentages of light.
@@GamingTheSystems1 I would only worry about airflow.. the air on that room might get a little stagnant if you never open the windows..... I think that UV Filters and top curtains can help a lot in preservation and airflow.
It always felt like I was the only one that questioned why gamestores exposed their games on the windows despite their obvious sun damages.
I always want to leave them a bad review for it, but can't bring myself to it.
In Spain we have something called Persianas
Kevin wants to keep the sunlight because he's a vampire 🧛♂️ LOL pasty white skin
That insulating tape will be difficult to remove if you ever need to. It'll leave residue and will break apart as you try removing it. Better to use painters tape or the UV film as others have suggested.
You can just buy uv blocking foil. Doesnt look getting. Keeps uv and warmth out of the room. Been using it for years on my attic windows of my gameroom.
I focus more on keeping sunlight off myself, but I can't avoid it at work sadly.
On the wall where u have the nokia hendheld which is the other 2 hendhelds to the right of the nokia????? Thanks and great video
maybe other people have already written to you
it is better to stick foil (or something similar) on such a cardboard to better reflect the sunlight. with it, the cardboard will not absorb heat and the room will be cooler.
this was very entertaining. even if it wasn't game related.
I work nights.... cardboard use to be my best friend. But now none of my windows face west
All you need is a blackout curtain and some velcro.
7:25 Upset he didn't cut a piece with "DO NOT USE FORKS" showing outside.
That would have really made the neighbors leave him alone.
Very good video, I hate how the sun fades stuff
"I already live in a ghetto so it does not really matter to me" 😅👍
“Sorry ladies I’m taken” 💀
Yes great points!
You could paint the cardboards to make them look better.
I think it's kinda depressing to just block out all the light in a room and have it just be a dark nerdcave. Wouldn't there be someway to filter out the UV light so that the games don't fade anymore? Or doesn't it work like that?
One window is behind a TV, so letting sunlight through would interfere with being able to see the screen. The other window would show as a reflection in the CRT.
Looks like VR out there lol 😆 🤣
You could try plasti-dip. The window will be much easier to open if you just do the glass.
1:50 I refer to this look as "the front shelf at Blockbuster" syndrome
What track did you choose to use at the beginning of the video? It’s really catchy & makes me want to play the game it’s on lol
That's from Castlevania Symphony of the Night. It's a boss theme; it might be the final boss theme. Can't remember.
Computer Lights! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is that a real marble window sill?
I think so. Every sill in the house has one. Big in the 1970s I guess.
Dood say he from the geto😂
very practical.
i live in the ghetto where we have marble window ledges hahaha
Auto limo tint works great
Thank you
Painting the glass black?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to have UV protective film on the windows? By doing that you get the best of both worlds. Have natural light and scenery from the window but no harmful UV rays fading the box-art.
I would rather have the light come from overhead, to reduce reflections on the TV screen. Also, the one window is behind a TV, so I'd be looking directly at a light source.
If you closed your eyes you can hear Todd Howard from Bethesda studios
Yeah, sunbleaching is horrid ✌️
Consider the like well and truely whipped 😂
I felt it!
I use Cell Shades. Lets light in the room but blocks UV
Great video
What a boring subject.......that you make very watchable! More please
Great video !!
Consoles are Vampires 🧛♀️
Sun is bad 🎃
Hay que alejarse del sol
Mis mejores partidas de videojuegos
han sido de noche con solo la luz del televisor
Ahora siempre es de noche en mi sala de juegos.
I miss my Ouya.
I use aluminum foil on the windows.
Absolutely no sun get through
IR and UV filters dont work?

@@GamingTheSystems1 yhea, youre right, but looks sad a room without windows, and sunlight helps to track the time.
If the problem is the radiation as I point before supposedly are filters that works.
But if the problem its the reflection during gaming session, i would recommend installing blinds, that you can get down at all, or partially to track the time.
And that plus the filters would help to make it look better, but of course it cost more and take more time than the cardboard.
The impressive part is that it really didn't look like cardboard from the outside.
8:29 and 9:50 That is also what she said.
I hate sun fading.
