You crack me up Pete. Count me in for your challenge & prompts. Painting anything is about my speed. Circles and squares it will be.
I just found your channel last week & I'm going back & watching some old videos. I sure needed to watch this when it first came out, before I got myself bogged down in WWCM--I was so excited this July, I was finally well enough & in control of my hands well enough to take part in World Watercolor Month this year! I even managed to get a few "paintings" done. But instead of being excited that I was recovering and my physical therapy was at a point that I could paint & draw again, I was unhappy that I had missed days and prompts.
I was ready too. I did my homework & looked up & saved images for most of the prompts so I could start each day with the right idea. But I still found myself getting sidetracked with too many ideas. It doesn't help someone in recovery from a debilitating illness & depression to overwhelm them with expectations. I know better for next year..
I won't say it's a scam, but they sure are inept at shipping items, or they are racking up shipping expenses for their own pockets. I went to their page to get some products they were selling for their charity project, getting funds for art for children. I had a couple of mugs & a couple of pencil pouches that were already double what they would normally cost. Okay, it's for charity & I wanted to encourage a few of my favorite watercolor teachers. Then I was zonked with almost $90 in shipping! YES, NINETY. Every item has independent shipping costs and they are not combined. I've been in shipping for about 50 years. I guess they could have shipped my items for about $13 or less. I'm sure they have an excuse for that, but it was all just too much for me. I'm out from now on.
PS. I like your teaching style and real way of telling us your opinions.
Sincerely, Teresa at Providence Valley Farm.
I'm sorry to hear about your illness but I'm so glad that you are on the mend. Take it as slow as you need to and keep up working towards your recovery. I have never bought anything through that charity but that sounds terrible. I have run into that several times with other charities. I'm glad you enjoy these. Welcome to the channel! 🙂
I love the painting, Pete. They are always so good.
I have no clue what the “days” are about. I can’t remember my own birthday, and I’m supposed to remember all that crap? Nope. I paint when I want, and I kick back when I want and I have learned to ignore all the “junk” in life . I’m a happy old lady. 😊
Thank you, Denise! You need to make it work for you. Some people like to punish themselves. I don't get it. 🙂
You are hilarious! I love the new day you just created! 😂 I also just wanted to let you know that the only reason Qor paint spreads so much is because they add oxgall to their binder. You can buy a small bottle of oxgall and make any of your paint do that by just adding a drop or two of oxgall. You might really be interested in doing that. Thanks for a fun video!
Thanks for the info! I'm glad I could make you smile. 🙂
"I'm sorry"... you're not sorry! 😂❤
Not usually. 😂
Oh, I'm loving the art!!! All your favorite colors! Glorious! 💜💜💜
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I think I might change one or two out soon. 😂
My favorite Brown and my favorite Daniel Smith color is also Piemontite Genuine. They have it in a stick that I was able to get for $9. That’s the nice thing about the Daniel Smith line for some of the expensive colors, you can get the watercolor stick at a better price.
That's a good tip. I've never tried them. There are so many things I have never tried. They go on the list.👍🏻
My favorite vibrant orange is the Transparent Orange from W&N professional line. The pigment code is DPP, doesn't even have a number... It looks like you could eat or drink it.
I'll have to check it out. Thanks! 👍🏻
I love all the colours you chose. I recall listening to Roman Szmal talking about the art of colour mixing saying there were instances where certain pigments even though higmghest lightfastness, when mixed lost some lightfastness. That may explain why the indigo and P Grey drop to a 2.
That could explain it. Thanks for the info! 👍🏻
lmao, i don't need an excuse to buy anymore crap! this is so me, i agree 100%, they work harder at selling their crap than they do making it NOT crap. they should work so hard at making stuff of value. good vid, tfs!
That's the truth. 👍🏻
I will definitely be a part of your one creation this year, best name ever, I look forward to it at some convenient moment ❤
Great! The movement is growing. 🙂
I've been so busy with work and my Son, that I haven't had any time to paint or watch your video. This morning I'm doing both over coffee! Much love! 🫂
Glad I could be company. 🙂
Hi Pete, that’s a nice colour choice and I do love that olive green. I know you’re in USA and the cost of shipping might be horrendous but I think you would really enjoy some of the Roman Szmal paints, some of them are fantastic. Dee
I have my eye on them. The next time I place an order big enough to warrant the shipping cost, I will go for it. Thanks! 👍🏻
Lovely palette ❤ and art work ❤
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
If you like that transparent Pyrrol orange you would love Mission gold autumn orange ❤
I will keep that in mind. Thanks! 👍🏻
We have many of the same colors on our pallet. This past Christmas I got the Mission Gold pure pigment set As a present and I have been very impressed by them and have swapped out some of my paints on my pallet like the orange.
I need to try more of them. I received 2 colors in some palettes I bought a while back, Cerulean, and Naphthol red. I like them both. They seem great.
Oooh! I didn’t know they had new colors! Love that perylene violet!
I know! When I found out it was like a surprise holiday. You know when you aren't paying attention to the calendar and you realize that you have a 3 day weekend this week. 🙂 It is a beautiful color.
I love the Qor colors and the way the paint behaves… I was unaware of the new shades… thanks for that… I don’t really have a use for the interference colors, but it’s nice to know they have them.
Yeah, I'm not too interested in those. I do want to get a few to paint on black paper but overall I don't have a need for it. 👍🏻
hi. When you mentioned that the yellow was too bright for you, the first thought was “why don’t you tone it down?”, but when the painting part came I saw you were painting “out of the tube” - all methods are valid and good for their users I guess! (learning how not to be judgemental) 😊 thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
I've been trying to find a better way to store swatches and you just solved my problem ty 😁
Glad I could help! 🙂
I would not mind you sharing your book of swatches. I made one for my colors but with less info on the swatch cards.
It's a great thing to have on hand. It's hard to show the colors in the book on camera because of the glare but I can try to figure that out. 👍🏻
Great video to have my morning coffee with! :) Thanks for this!!! 😃🤣💜💜💜
Thank you, Linda! I always appreciate you. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete Just finished watching the video, the Elephantine Humming Bird feeding on a Mud Blossom is superb. :D
I like that! 🙂
Hi Pete - Great video. Love your opening. Hilarious. I like Qor paint a lot.
Thank you, Marty! It's been a fun experience the past few months discovering this brand. I always saw your reviews and wondered about it. It's fun to paint with. Glad you enjoyed the opening. I like to make people smile.
I just watched your video and I had to try for myself making the olive green dupe. I now have a page full of experiments and I am surprised the English Reds are the ones that made the most beautiful mixes. Well, Mars Brown also gave me a great mix... thank you for a relaxing evening mixing paints 😊😊
I'm glad you enjoyed it. 🙂 An evening of paint mixing is an evening well spent.
I love QoR-the indigo and Payne’s gray and so nice. I also love pyyrole red medium.
They are great paints. 👍🏻
I really like that Indian red!
Love the drawing as well - looks like a dragon.
As for the special days... well, if everyone has a special day, then no one is that special anymore.
So in the end... there is nothing special about them :D.
That is the truth! 😂
You should try Aussie Red Gold. In the mass tone, it’s a bright orange, but it tints out to yellow. A real two-fer!
I've had my eye on that since they first came out with it but I haven't taken the plunge. I might need to try it. 👍🏻
Uh, you shouldn't have mentioned the "sucking up" - at that moment it looked like a iridescend blowfly sucking up "brown stuff" to me 🤢 I'll have to remember not to eat something when watching one of your movies 🤣 I only learned about perylene green after needing "a spacial green to paint a ruby throated hummingbird" for a birthday card. Mine is from Schmincke and I like it a lot. I'ts helpful to have seen your swatches as a comparison. Your reasoning for which color to keep or add to your palette was quite interesting, thank you for sharing your thoughts 🥰
😂 sorry. I'm glad you enjoyed the swatches, I think they are very helpful. 👍🏻
Oh, that Qor Benzi Burnt Orange reminds me of Roman Szmal Tramsparent Brown! ITT just states Pb 23 as the pigment.
I need to get a small set of those. They look great and everyone seems to love them. 👍🏻
@@IllustrationsByPete I wholeheartedly concur!
I will definitely create something this year. Per your instructions I am blaming your patrons for ordering the Olive Green Qor Paint.
😂
Thanks Pete 😊
Thank you! 🙂
Missed you Pete, or Peter. And I can’t wait to get to work on my Useuaryemberyear project.
Really liked you new Palette. Some of those colors called to me.
I'm glad you liked it. I hope the project goes well. 🙂
your channel is insanely goated
Thank you! 🙂
Wait. They have some Perylenes?!?! Perylenes are some of my absolute favorite colors! Mannnnn........so much for my no buy. That lasted a whole week.
😂 don't feel bad. There's always an exception and perylenes are that exception!
Love your artwork !!!
And I don't participate in those art groups bc I do my art every day and don't need to be TOLD what to do lol 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! Good for you. 😂
Never fails. I’m just getting ready to turn off the light and go to sleep, then your new video posts. And I gotta watch it! lol Pete, you stinker you.
Sorry to keep you up late. 😂 I hope it was worth the lack of sleep.
@@IllustrationsByPeteLol, I got halfway through, and got too sleepy! I’m finishing it this morning. 😎😜
It was a long one. I hope you enjoy it. 🙂
Thanks, I sure I will!
Lightfastness isn't what people think it is. As soon as one adds water the lightfast changes. Same with oil paint. The lightfast changes when one adds mediums. Just like acrylic paints break down depending on how much water one adds. Point is, no one is selling originals. No one is ever going to pay hundreds or thousands for an original painting ever again. So is what you like how you like. If ppl are lucky they can sell a print for $5.00 or make a few dollars a month from the tube.
Good info. Thanks. My boss at work buys originals. Pays thousands each time. Some people have money to burn. 😂
The ones spending hundreds of thousands or millions for an original aren’t anyone the general masses would come in contact with. 😊
The lightfastness rating is based on really dilute washes, though. If you use UV protective glass and LF1 pigments, the painting will be in good shape indefinitely. An original work is always going to be worth more than a reproduction.
I support World Watercolour Month simply because it's an event for charity. I'll follow as many of the prompts as I feel like, but by no means all of them. I pick up a pouch/pencil case every year because the profits are used for an excellent project and not personal gain.
Never underestimate a prompt, especially for learners just setting out. The variety of prompts can constantly lead you out of any comfort zone you might be settling into. It makes you think about what you're doing and provides new challenges. They're good for those days where you want to practice and experiment, but you can't pick a subject (we all have days where our brains are dull)
Today I don't need a prompt, because I'm painting a velociraptor in an indoor winter garden 😅
Nothing wrong with supporting a charity with a donation. 👍🏻 There's also nothing wrong with a prompt. I just dislike the pressure people put themselves under for many of these things. Life has enough pressure, art should be enjoyable. Casual participation is a good thing. Sounds like an interesting piece you're working on. 🙂
@@IllustrationsByPete It took my daughter to a bowling competition 🎳 We had a few hours to kill between her entry categories, so we went to the nearby indoor tropical garden. I wasn't expecting dinosaurs! Of course I took reference photos 😆
I will participate in your new holiday!
Thank you! I'll update the list. 🙂
Fascinating video. Love the comparisons. Da Vinci makes the most beautiful perylene green IMO.
Thank you! I will have to check that out. 👍🏻
And Quin Burnt Orange. Bought an extra tube of the original mix.
Lightfastness is only relevant if you’re hanging art on walls that will be affected by constant sunlight.
Sketchbooks aren’t a concern, you close them. Kinda like cave drawings, I doubt the person painting a hunt scene several thousand years ago was worrying about lightfastness. It’s still there. (Could probably use a touch up tho’) 😅
Daniel Smith Primateks are the actual ground minerals, iirc. Ergo, Solidite isn’t P-mix anything, it’s simply Solidite. Probably has a P designation of some sort but they aren’t hues of something else, they’re originals. They’re nature. Sitting around since Earth’s formation. They may dim a bit every million or so years. 😅😅😅
I understand. A lot of people here are trying to sell their art so I'm just trying to provide info for them.
The found out a while ago that there are other pigments in the primatek line. There is only a little of the names mineral so people started freaking out. I don't mind it at all. 🙂
The way you carry on about new gamb I'm surprised you aren't a nickle azo yellow guy
I like it watered down but the closer to masstone you get the dirtier it looks to me. I have used it on occasion.
I had a similar issue with the hue - loved it but masstone seemed dirty. So I did some comparison and now QoR's is my staple cool yellow because it stays a perfecly clean sunny yellow. Can recommend.
It's still a little too much golden brown in it for me but I can see why people enjoy it. 👍🏻
Yup
lol. It's World Art Buying Day -aka Buy My Art Day lolol😅
What? That's a great idea. 🙂
You are an amazing artist, and you are absolutely hilarious.
Thank you, Kim! I'm glad you enjoyed this. 🙂
What's your favorite picture he has made ?
Isnt that atc size ???
Mer/may draws mermaids all may
😂
I don't know why people like QOR paints I have a big palette of them, and they fade so bad. My swatch chart is in a book and gets no sunlight on it and it is so faded.
Oh no! I'll keep an eye out for that. If that's the case I'll drop these off in the nearest dumpster. 👍🏻
@@IllustrationsByPete The olive green you like did 0k it didn't fade too much.
Ok good. That's 1.
Had to go and check my Qor swatch cards + do new swatches and I see no fading after almost 3 years. I have all my swatches done on 100% cotton, Arches or Fabriano.
I have noticed cheaper paper kind of suck up the paint like a sponge and leave the colors looking faded.
I'll have to keep checking as I go. I have a few paintings up around the room and the room gets a lot of light. Time will tell. 👍🏻
you're getting close to cooking.... let's say you are assembling premade foods- but before you know it, swatch baker!
👍🏻🙂
