  • When a ship jumps in to hyperspace it doesn't necessarily mean they've escaped, there are a few different ways an enemy can track someone through hyperspace. We'll also be looking at Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi's new version of hyperspace tracking.

    The messing with hyperspace has created some deep set and troubling implications for the entire franchise. There were 2 sides to this problem; first the empire can now track people without effort. You can’t hide in hyperspace. Secondly we were introduced to the concept of engaging hyperspace to destroy enemy ships. In summary they have now weaponised hyperspace and the consequences are enormous. You now no longer need to try and find the rebellion, you already know where they are. This fact would stop any rebellion ever forming in the first place. Hiding allows space and time for a smaller antagonist to plan moves against a larger foe. It’s the bread and butter of the original films. Secondly we now have no need for any fighters of any kind to take on the empire or first order, just strap a hyperdrive to a dead ship or asteroid and point at the Death Star. They have managed to undermine their own plot devices to sevice a lazy script idea.

    Lame tech.. still easy to fool if you make 2 or 3 really short jumps in different directions in succession (each jump can be longer) you'll avoid being 'tracked' .. this isn't a tracker.. it is, as you said, a guesser...

    • @casbot71

      Tom McDaniel Which apparently enabled the Supremacy to be hyperspace rammed, or purple hair just invented the most game changing tatic on the fly (there's a debate over whether hyperspace ramming works on any ship or the tracker made it vulnerable). So it's probably better to fit it on a corvette that flys nearby.

    cronau Radiation has existed in the expanded universe for quite some time. this allows a ship with the proper sensors to detect the radiation given off during an entry into or out of hyperspace. this allows for early detection and tracking the destination of a single hyperspace jump. so chasing them is important and making more than one jump is important to shake pursuers. of course this can be done by multiple ships and thus taking out a single ship won't allow you to escape. in fact you can have probes that relay data to a computer offsite in order to track a ship, making it far better than the last jedi's tracking system. though maybe their system allowed tracking through multiple jumps.

    The most sensible thing to do in TLJ would be to connect the hyperspace tracker with the weaponisation of the hyperdrive. The theory goes that Holdo was able to target the FO ship precisely because it had the tracker on board. This would allow the restriction of both using the hyperdrive as a weapon and of being able to track. Unfortunately, for this theory to be true it would mean that the tracker is more than a big probability machine.

    • @AGrumpyPanda

    • @marcbartuschka6372
      @marcbartuschka6372 6 років тому +1

      As would a lot of fans (including me). But honestly - how should that work? The Republic is shattered (seem they did realy do a mess in the 30 years after the death of Palpy if the collaps so easy) and what is left from the Resistance has place on the Falcon. You do not need a Mastermind commander to beat them - just a able commander how is not SO dumb as the FO acts until now.
      It would a twist if the resistance allied themself with imperial remnants outside the FO and/or the Chiss. Although I guess Thrawn would have a very low opinion of all of them. May it be the FO with their constant waste of ressources and giant ships (and their stupid leaders - I mean Hux is surely far inferior to men like Pellaeon etc. or women like Sloane), as towards the resistance with their inability to form a realy strong fleet (they never seem to muster more than a few ships and a small number of fighters, at least we see nothing like that) and the New Republic who crushes so easy. It would be funny if the Chiss and Imperials would in the end take over from both the FO (deposing Kylo with help of the Ysalimiri) AND the Republic/Resistance (after both have weakened them in their stupid actions) - but did you think we will ever see a likeable Imperial/Imperial ally in this films? Sadly I think it is not very likely

    • @GenerationTech

      yea the problem with thrawn is he's so brilliant its always ridiculous when he loses

    • @marcbartuschka6372
      @marcbartuschka6372 6 років тому

      Well, he is never perfect and I think some of his failures are good explained (at least in the books like in the battle at the end of Heir of the Empire, where he shows real leadership in safe his men and ressources by ordering a planned retreat - what rarely happen in Star Wars, mostly it is defeat or desperate escape). In rebels I think this giant force-creature was a little bit deus ex machina, but after all he destroyed 85 percent of the rebel scum in that battle.
      The main problem I think would be that they could hardly introduce such a major character in the last film without leaving many people with a lot of questions - beside use him in the last part to clear the field for the future films. Bring him in as a antagoinist (or difficult ally) just for the last out of three films would be a kind of waste if you could not build up on it. Hm, did I say that I am a huge fan of him (as of his second in command in legends, Pellaeon)?

    • @tiberiuscodius5828
      @tiberiuscodius5828 6 років тому

      Honestly, I'd be willing to have a sub part story as long as he's realized on screen and Lars Mikkelsen voices him. I really don't care for rebels, but I watch it anyway because seeing a character realized so brilliantly do anything makes me giddy

  • @hueowen2786

    Uh guys, hyperspace tracking existed in Return of the Jedi. When the rebels enter the imperial bunker on Endor and start setting charges, Leia looks at a large wall monitor and says to Han, "Han, hurry. The fleet will be here any minute." You can clearly see on the monitor the rebel fleet advancing toward Endor and the 2nd Death Star while still in hyperspace.

  • @charliefoxtrot3980
    @charliefoxtrot3980 6 років тому

    I believe the new guidebook says that the hyperspace tracker on the Supremacy works by having the computer systems be inside a localized hyperspace bubble. So yeah, it is basically a giant scaled up quantum computer/probability machine. If this was Trek, there would have been 30 seconds of technobabble explaining it LOL.

    So it’s a guesser, probably fooled by a few quick, random jumps if the pursuer doesn’t keep up. But lo and behold, it guessed right just once, just enough to convince the Resistance that jumping again was useless. Actually kind of clever/convenient; perhaps it managed to pull up a file on the old resistance base (that the First Order may not have noticed as the computer ran, or just ignored because who needs ski speeders) and jumped nearby.
    Doesn’t explain managing to pull up DIRECTLY behind the Resistance, but movie has to movie. Good enough explanation for me.

    While playing with timespace to accelerate yer computers is a cool trick, to be honest I am unsatisfied by explanation behind the "tracker" given. it would be imo much better if it was factuall active sensive sensor array advanced enought to detect objects in ftl.
    That way it would have much more strategical value and would actually seem as legitimate device....

      Destroying gas giant requires several orders of magnitude more energy than destroying normal planet

    • @LashingMrX01
      @LashingMrX01 6 років тому

      Assuming that gas giants are proto stars (some theory about Jupiter, also the second book in the space odyssey series), you could just ignite a series of points in the lower/upper atmosphere of the planet that would cause chain reactions similar to the way a nuclear weapon goes off (at the atomic level). It wouldn't take much, single reactor ignition would suffice.

      Test Test that's only with all reactors I think, isn't it? The destructive power equial to that of the destruction of Jedha City, which was a single reactor ignition. The 24 hour cooldown only applys to shots capable of totally obliterating planets, which use all available power?

  • @michaelpurcell829

    There is not a point to creating hyperspace tracking though if they can't escape to begin with. Gravity Well projectors were already possessed by the Empire so the New Order obviously would have access. Not to mention, how practical is it to have the technology at all if it takes something larger than a Super Class Star Destroyer to house and power the device? Yeah and those were 8 kilometers long but the tech needs something bigger. Compare that to an Interdictor cruiser that is what roughly half the size of a Star Destroyer and has 4 gravity well projectors. The tracker isn't viable if you can only use it in one conflict out of hundreds or thousands. Given that it takes a project almost on scale with the Death Star to build a cruiser like Snoke's, it would be more beneficial to have a toned down/more mobile superlaser installed instead and standard ships of the line equipped with gravity well generators.

      Joel and the first order also has a similar thing in snokes ship and that's why the could track the resistance fleet. That's how I understood it

    • @AGrumpyPanda
      @AGrumpyPanda 6 років тому +1

      Not quite, the two bracelets were a binary system- i.e. they only detected each other. What the First Order was using was another system tracking the ships themselves, just they kinda explained the whole thing poorly. If it was the bracelets the FO was tracking, someone would have remarked "That bracelet/signal we were tracking just jumped off-ship! Should we send someone to go follow it?" or something to that nature.

    Wait how can Vader create a Force bond with his meditation sphere when the sphere is technology and technology isn’t living so therefore the Force can’t connect the sphere to Vader!

    • @self-satisfiedsmirk5544
      @self-satisfiedsmirk5544 6 років тому

      Victor Peterson Something doesn't have to be alive to be bonded to, though I'd imagine that it would be easier. There were multiple examples of Jedi imbuing the Force into inanimate objects and being able to sense it anywhere within Legends continuity. There was also Quinlan Vos, who had the ability of psychometry, which allowed him to see the past by connecting to the residual Force-signature left on an object.
      So, there is a precedence for this sort of thing.

    How come no one weaponized the hyperdrive if it was that powerful in the last jedi?

    • @patrickmurphy6578
      @patrickmurphy6578 6 років тому

      It’s a suicide mission. Hyperdrives are meant for faster travel, not being s speeding projectile. It would only work in visual range too, because unless you know the exact position of the ship you’re trying to hit, you’re going to end up missing, or hitting something else like a planet or star. Also in TLJ they used a huge Mon Calamari cruiser, not just a small fighter. A small fighter wouldn’t have that much effect on a ship the size of snoke’s, plus they’re not going to waste valuable capital ships to maybe destroy something else typically, only in desperation, so that’s why hyperdrives aren’t weaponized.

    • @epistemo3442
      @epistemo3442 6 років тому

      Patrick Murphy But, still, they can just used hundreds of meters of ship or solid object that have hyperdrives on it and don't need for pilots, and just send the unmanned ship or solid object to a ship and obliterated it, without actually losing lives. This also includes the droid fighter in from Clone Wars, why didn't the Separatist just put hyperdrives in every droid fighter and just kamikaze every ship in the republic. Unless, there's a Gravity well generator, but it would proves useless, considering how the Millennium Falcon didn't got out of hyperspace even the ship go nearby a powerful Gravity well being generated by the Planet's mass or during Rogue One, when the U-wing just hyperspace on the atmosphere, meaning there's still Gravity Well. The last Jedi film is the biggest mistake to the entire Star Wars franchise especially the hyperdrive ram, in which completely bullshit and creates a massive plot hole to every single space battle, that just happens in Star Wars.

    • @vonfaustien3957
      @vonfaustien3957 6 років тому

      they have droids so its not suicide, as long as the mass is bigger than zero its going to do catastrophic damage at ftl speeds and there have been multiple cases like ANH, ROTJ or TFA that they would have been desperate enough to at least try and use it. there is no good excuse its shit writing added to make a pretty shot with no thought into any implications beyond how cool it looked.

    It is all over for the Rebels if they can't figure out away to defeat Imperial tracking technology. Good thing that all the best and brightest in R&D hate imperial working conditions and defect to the Rebellion at the first opportunity. Which is exactly why the Rebels have the best technology😜

      Gold Leader The Hyperspace ram in the new canon is completely bullshit. If that we're to be the case, then the fuck why, didn't the Separatist mass produced drips fighters with hyperspace to basically kamikaze every ship in the goddamn republic. The Hyperspace ram idea have created the biggest plot hole in every space battle in star wars canon. Also, Rey beats Kylo Ren with no training, that's also bullshit, the new canon is already controlled by feminist like Kathleen Kennedy.
      The only thing, that I' m glad, is that they wouldn't introduce the grey Jedi into the Star Wars franchise, if that were to be happened, it would ruin the idea of the Force.

    • @balladofcoseypolar4711
      @balladofcoseypolar4711 6 років тому

      I'm sure the Separatists wouldn't waste their war machine to build massive kamikazes just to destroy single Venators. It would be a incredible waste of money. Yes, the US could design giant unmanned ships to crash into enemy ones, but the expense of that is astounding.
      Even the inept B1s were expensive. But spending millions of credits per ship, just to have them be destroyed and you need another batch would be ridiculous.

    • @epistemo3442
      @epistemo3442 6 років тому

      Gold Leader First of all, don't compare real life to Star Wars, the technology gap is huge by margin, and because of that, warfare is also different. Second, hyperspace ramming is an already idea back in Star Wars EU, two honorable devices that weaponize hyperspace is the Galaxy gun from the dark empire comic and the shawken device, the shawken device uses hard and solid objects and ram it into a planet, and split the planet apart, in which in turn, the planet's fragments would also go to hyperspace, in which hits more planets, the super weapon had the potential to destroy the universe and recreate the Big Bang.
      Let's say a single X-wing activated hyperdrive to an imperial star destroyer, what happens, you might say? It's easy, the result would be the Imperial Star Destroyer get obliterated to oblivion, if the rebellion wants to destroy the Death Star, all they need is goddamn nebulon-B Frigate or corellian corvette and go to hyperspace, and destroy the Death Star. If the republic wants to destroy the Malevolence made by the Separatist, they just put a hyperdrive into an asteroid, and just fucking launch it into the Malevolence and destroy the dreadnought. This is why Hyperspace ramming is bullshit, if we're going to apply real science, the end result of the radius hitting the supremacy would be an invisible catastrophe and other ships that hyperspace ramming. Just watch the video made by Nerdist, you understand.
