Request, sorry if I missed it in a video, can you do a cold comparison? Where I live it routinely gets to be -30F at night so cold starts are crazy. The lithium packs definitely have a harder time in the cold. Ultimate test would be cold engine and cold battery pack, but understandably it might be hard to get a super cold engine.
Sometimes on long outings I can't take the jump pack with me to keep it warm, so I have to leave it in the car. So far my battery has been doing well in the cold, but having one of these as backup would be a great stress relief.

I like the real world (actual jump start) tests he does the best, but found the new additions useful and interesting. Fun to see what they actually do. I was in Harbor Freight to buy the Viking, but thought I need to research these. So glad Project Farm did these! The Viking failed both times! Saved me from wasting time and money.

Very thorough reviews. Great job! One additional thing that I would love for you to test is to fully charge all of them and put them away for 1-3 months, then see how they work without topping off. This would simulate a very important use case for those who throw them in the trunk and expect them to work at an unexpected time. Some models (like the early Tacklife models) have a mechanical on-off switch that physically disconnects the batteries during storage. In theory, this might reduce the rate of discharge vs. an electronic pushbutton (which always bleeds off a little juice even when turned off). All batteries have some level of self-discharge, so it's a question of whether the physical on-off button makes a significant difference, or is it negligible.

I do the 3 month thing with my Shumacher Lithium Ion pack now. Have for 3-4 years. 3 months is no issue for a good unit. 6 months really either, stored in my trunk or floorboard. Start your rig/car/truck and and as soon as you are up and running you just recharge your battery pack for next time. I doubt 3-6 months storage for the GooLoo will be any harder than on my current 4 yr old Shumacher. Probably easier with new technology. I paid $80 for my Shumaker, 4 years ago, so about same price re: current vs old dollars. Gotta trust Project Farm. Better testing than I could ever do.

Items that are intended for vehicle recovery are rated, and will have a large tag permanently attached with the rating numbers. Commercial/industrial rigging gear will have a WLL rating (working load limit) number of lbs. which will be 20% or a bit less of the tensile/breaking strength. Many recovery items for us average citizens only have the much higher tensile/break strength rating on the tag. Failure testing has already been done for us. If, however, you would like a comparison of all the other performance factors/ease of use, there are hundreds of videos by people who use this gear very often, and have much experience with most of the different types. For one guy to generate the real world information you need would take a long time to accomplish, and probably damage a few vehicles during the testing. And be expensive.
Lots of people are injured (a few killed) by improper use of recovery gear.
Please research the safe ways and the danger factors. Oh, and if a piece of gear doesn’t have a rating, it’s not intended for recovery. Do not use.

I only used it a few times in the first year or so, jumping a few cars for neighbors. Went to used it again and it didn’t work, wouldn’t jump anything. The flashlight works, that’s about it. There seems to be a broken switch inside. Let me say I take very good care of my tools. This was stored inside on closet shelf, not abused in any way. I even bought a protective case for it. It’s out of warranty, nothing can be done. They may have fixed the cheap internal parts on later models. In the mean time I’m out close to $400.

The Autowit actually performed better than what is being displayed in this test. He put the Autowit into the discharge mode (solid tone), moving it from one battery to the other, and then having a slight delay in hitting the starter. If it had been charged up, then moved to the dead battery...and then hitting the starter when the solid tone occurred after using the count-down, the starter would have run longer.

I like your videos, great job. As for car jump starters, I wanted to know the voltage while it was cranking under load. Most of the modern electronic ignition cars I use or work on, the computer usually shuts off at 8.5 Volts...meaning the engine can crank and crank and crank but if the voltage drops below 8.5 volts then the ignition won't fire up the engine. During cranking in my experience the voltage still needs to stay above 8.5 volts. Any thoughts?
When I started a new job they knew I was an auto mechanic prior and one day when they had a car that wouldn't start they called me over to check it out. The car would crank and crank but the engine wouldn't fire up. Luckily the dash had a voltage meter and I noticed the voltage would drop real low as soon as the engine started cranking. I told them the battery was bad...and OMG everyone started laughing. They all said "How can?...the engine is cranking!" "nah you don't know what you're talking about!" Really? Okay do you have jumper cables?....NOPE Okay so I tried another trick, I just tapped the motor with the key just to get the starter to kick over the engine, but because it was only a "tap" when the starter load shut off I was hoping the ignition voltage would spike causing the ignition to fire as the voltage climbed back up while the inertia was still rotating the engine. So after a few taps, the engine fired right up. "DON'T TURN OFF THE ENGINE!" They never questioned my skills again....LMAO

Very few reviewers will tear a product apart to see how quality its engineering and components are, so when it comes to longevity...it's a crapshoot. Some of the big review organizations like Consumer Reports will try to simulate wear and tear, but no matter what you are going to get anecdotal evidence. Take the NOCO brand. caleb has 3 years of using the product and his works great. Mine just died after 14 months of sitting in my trunk in mild weather with zero uses whatsoever. Your best bet is to look at a big review site like Amazon and see how the reviews are spread out. If the reviews are polarized with almost exclusively 5 star and 1 star reviews, chances are good that there is a major flaw in the product. If you get a decent spread of 5,4,3,2,1 star reviews then it is probably fairly reliable. That's been my experience.

One question - having had a lithium poly jump starter for a few years now - storing charged is not good and the battery has swollen and does not work as well anymore to the point I would consider it dangerous to store. Would you consider a follow up in say a year after these have been stored in a hot car like environment fully charged and show the potential damage . I would like to know the battery chemistries , as for example the gooloo 4000 say lithium ion - but the Amazon web page says lithium polymer, which just does not store well fully charged

A few things to consider. starting power is quite difference from that tester. that thing puts a SOLID load on the battery while an actual car puts a more "pulsating" load on the battery these batteries are much better equipped to handle millisecond "loads" as the power demand pulsates (this is my educated guess)
so far every unit I have tried even units I hate have no problem starting my V8 2002 Dodge Dakota WITH NO BATTER just the jumper. The engine usually turns off right away since the battery turns off right away as well but they ALL start it which really impressed me.
I REALLY want to like the HF Viking for its LIFE batteries that's a HUGE deal a simple massive insanely huge deal especially for something your going to use twice a year and toss in the boot.
but I have one condition for jump starters that is MANDATORY and I take no prisoners on this requirement. IT MUST be able to charge Via USB C. not output. INPUT. because when you lose that power brick its a paper weight for most people..... :-)

Watching this video again, I will note that we had a dead battery in our car, and none of the jump starters we had would do the job, and we have several that we’ve bought over the years. We ended up having to call out AAA so that we could get the car started again, and then have it hauled down to have the system checked out and the battery replaced. I noticed that the AAA technician was using a NOCO Boost Pro GB150 unit, which is what I bought. I also bought a trickle charger, so that we can keep the battery topped off while we’re not driving nearly so much in these COVID times.
I’d love to see a retest with other, higher power units like this one.

Those claims are usually made based on "ideal or perfect world conditions".
Meaning, in the best possible case, if all conditions are just right, it should produce X amount.
It's not so much as a lie, but a statement of ideal conditions. Where total current output is concerned that is.
In the real world, chemistry has an effect which can cause variances in performance regarding batteries of all types.
Those effects are what is seen in the results in this video.

Correction. Capacitors can release their stored energy all at once.
But only for a fraction of a second at best.
Far too short to ever turn over a vehicle's starter as well as provide enough voltage and current to power the ignition system long enough for the alternator to take over.
These booster's output leads are connected directly to the internal lithium battery, just behind the high current diodes which prevent the lead acid car battery from causing a seriously dangerous chemical reaction in the lithium cells leading to an explosion, as well as preventing the alternator from sending voltage and current to the lithium battery.
The only capacitors in these packs are used to filter voltages for it's display lights and the 5 volt USB output if equipped, along with varying controls offered on some models.
The "peak amperage" is just that, the very maximum the lithium battery can produce under ideal conditions.
Sadly, the real world just isn't ideal. Thus the lower ratings than advertised.
Not to mention that the very diodes which protect the battery also will limit the total current output possible due to their own limitations because of real world conditions.
An audio amplifier has a maximum wattage rating. But it is extremely difficult to obtain that maximum due to the same real world vs idea world conditions.
He performed these tests perfectly. Just as any lab worth its funding would.
EDITED: Capacitors in these packs are also used in control circuitry which handle the charging of the lithium battery.

@@theduder2617 It's not just "ideal conditions". They're essentially citing inrush current. With these instruments and ramping up the load, you're never going to see it regardless of how much they may be leaning on those "ideal conditions" to boost their claims.
The whole test setup is basically the opposite of what they're designed to power and how they're designed to work.

    • @theduder2617

But yet manufacturer tests are often similar, just with some more expensive equipment is all.
This isn't opinion here. Virtually all output specs listed are based on all components performing at absolute peak ability, with ideal chemical reactions in the cells, ideal semi-conducting abilities of the transistors and various other control features of these packs.
In real life, not all chemical reactions occur as desired. Not all resistors have or maintain proper values.
Heat is a main cause of fluctuations in the components which render ideal conditions almost impossible, hence the higher than achieved ratings.
I apologize in advance, but you will lose this debate. Not because I am being stubborn, but that you are not correct.
Inrush current is not related to, nor effects total output amperage on battery powered battery boosters. Nor is it a claim made by the manufacturers that was being put to the test.
Inrush current comes into play more so in power supplies and mains powered battery chargers/engine starters and power converters. These packs are not converting power. They are storing power, then delivering it when needed through a few components which prevent the issues I mentioned in my previous response.
If these packs were not tested correctly, I would be stating it without a doubt.
But one thing is clear with this channel, if it is a faulty or inaccurate test, it probably will not be performed as accurate as possible information is the entire point.
