Thank Russ, I grew up in Dubuque, just a 1/2 a mile from the Museum, use to walk to that Train Bridge and fish under it lots of days. I was there during the flood; I went to school right at that Big Church in the background, the water came 1/2 Block away from my school. I lived right on the hill behind it on West 3rd. Dubuque has really upgraded the area during the 80's.
All those beautiful brick buildings were all working factories and lumber company. Now totally restored and beautiful! Thanks don

Grew up in Monona IA and would drive down to Dubuque every few months to do shopping in the “big” town. Very pretty drive. Also recommend driving hwy 13 from Strawberry Point to Elkader. Another pretty drive is hwy 18 from West Union to Postville. Most people think Iowa is just flat farmland but this part of state is way different. Many people call it little Switzerland.

Also forgot to mention there is a cool campground you can stay at between Monona and Marquette. It is called Spook cave and has a tour where you can take a boat into a cave.

This is one of the best videos I have seen of Dubuque. I grew up in Dubuque and moved away in 1981. I have a lot of great memories down along the river before it was built up to what it is now. I remember the days before the flood wall was started. You can spend weeks around the Dubuque area with all the history and attractions. Dubuque does know how to put its best foot forward with style. If you didn't know, Dubuque is the oldest city in Iowa. If you go to Dubuque you should take a drive thru Eagle Point Park. It is one of the best city parks anywhere in my opinion. Again, thanks for all the childhood memories.

When you were showing the layout of the William M. Black, I was was thinking that I had seen this before. My father was born in 1920. He worked on the William S. Mitchell, on the Missouri River, when he was a teenager. Both the Black and the Mitchell were dredge boats, operated by the Corps of Engineers. I'm not sure if these two vessels were the same model, but both were built in 1934. Knowing that, my father was working on a new boat as a teenager. The Black is well secured and being well taken care of. The Mitchell was taken care of, until a swollen river caused it to break loose from the dock near Kansas City, MO. It drifted down river, hitting a bridge, causing extensive damage. I heard of the incident, but as of today, I'm not sure if a group stepped up to repair the vessel. In the Fall of 1980, during my canoe trip down the Missouri and Mississippi River, ending at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, I had the privilege on touring the Mitchell, at Gasconade, MO. It was still in operation at that time. Unknown to me at that moment, I had no idea that my father worked on the vessel, until after my trip, when I shared my pictures with him. At his first glance at the boat, his face lit up, he hollered, I worked on that dredge before going into the CCC. I wished he could have been with me when I walked its deck. We had a remarkable generation, that paved the way for us. Thanks for sharing this video.

Fantastic visit to Dubuque. I only heard of Dubuque in the movie "The Music Man" at the beginning of the movie. This was a very well presented visit to Mississippi River. I've been to New Orleans where you see the Mississippi River there as well. Your visit was very interesting and well narrated about the museum. I have never seen a paddle fish. Your visit to the dredge was very interesting. In addition, the shot tower was quite impressive. It's too bad that there wasn't a video or whatever showing the making of the ammunition forged there. Thanks for making this trip. I don't think I'll be able to see Dubuque in person so it was a good education for me and your viewers.

North of Dubuque in the Northeastern part of the state is quite scenic, with very tall rolling hills, compared to the rest of the state, due to the fact that the Glaciers did not go through that area. Enjoy !

I agree with you Russ about liking the green scenery and cool river. Guess it has something to do with living in Arizona? Yep. No wild Alligators in Iowa by the way - just exhibits in the living zoo type aquarium museum.

Hi Russ! You surprised us with the Dubuque, Iowa trip. I have been there several times. A nice, scenic trip is to drive north to Guttenberg, Iowa and then further to Pikes Peak State Park. Depending on where you plan to go from there, you could drive into Wisconsin at Prairie du Chien. Very pretty area. From there, you can go north, or east or head south to Illinois, following the Mississippi River. Galena, Illinois is a great small town to visit. If you drive to Manitowoc, WI, there is a large ferry that will take you across Lake Michigan to the state of Michigan. Whatever you do, just have a great time!

Surprise Surprise good for you. Hopefully everyone will watch your videos. Diesel is highest it has been around here right now. That is a lot worst than the temperature. Not a way to get around it. Happy site seeing.

Try to get to Itasca State Park, it’s the beginning of the Mississippi River!

You should head to Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska. You would really enjoy it.

I'm happy you went to Iowa, it's such a beautiful area. The museum was great and beautiful as usual, especially the aquariums. I loved watching the barge going through the canal. It's a real engineering marvel like you said. Safe travels.
