- Remember the SOM craze - when companies made floor toms with snare wires for people to use as that dead snare sound? That was the exact sound I was going for when I got this 10X15" vintage WFL 3-ply mahogany parade snare, but surprisingly this drum does more than the low-end gush. Hear how versatile this thing is in this #snaresaturday video!
Learn the drum set with Marc Dicciani and Myself AND earn graduate credits during the UArts Summer Music Studies program! 2 courses will be offered 7/22-7/26 at Villanova University, and details can be found at uarts.edu/sms

We gotta give him mad respect for replying to everyone's comments with kind words and a positive attitude.
Every time he replies to one of my comments, it makes my day just a little bit better.
Thanks again for the kind words, @hman3000rules ! It's people like yourself that make this fun to do. Positive interactions and building a community is what it's all about!
Medium to medium high open. Sounds great! John Bonham - Cranked, great as well. James Brown
Totally - it gave a killer sound I completely didn’t expect due to the size 🤯
It’s so interesting that you made this video! I recently bought a Gretsch Parade drum from the 40s.It’s a 10x14, but mine doesn’t have a wrap, so the mahogany color is nice and pretty on the outside. I had to remove all the rust from the lugs. It’s a single sided tuning on the top that pushes the bottom. Much more difficult to tune, so I think I couldn’t get to these high tunings. It will take the snare side so tight that it would disconnect the wires. I don’t think I can fix that unless I change the lugs and that would mischaracterize the vintage looking. What would you do about it? I like to see you using the BFSD. I have made some with my son with unused drum heads. It’s not the same, but it’s good to show my son that we can DIY some things.
Oh no way! I was hesitant on making this because I was afraid it would only do one thing. What a surprise - this is more versatile than some traditional sized snares in my collection!
If it’s a single tension drum like that, I think the only option would be to find a double sided lug that would fit the holes for the current lugs - that way you can get shorter tension rods for the top and bottom while being in control of each head separately. I myself tune the bottom the same on every snare - tabletop tight for a quick, snappy snare response.
That’s an amazing trick for a DIY BFSD. We use to flip old drumheads upside down and put on the top when we were in college. Very similar concept!
Simply for nostalgia, I've been wanting to have an old marching snare, now I want one even more. This one really sings when played open & I didn't realize it had such a wide tuning range! All of the tunings w/ the bfsd sound familiar, like I've heard them on a recording somewhere.
Also, did you have to sit up a bit higher to play this drum or did the snare stand go low enough for the deeper shell?
Yes. I'd be interested in your cleaning method.
Thanks for showing off this cool old drum.
Right on @timm1139 ! Pretty sure these are pretty affordable still. After making this vid, couldn’t recommend one enough!
Sounded great. I would have been afraid to crank it for fear of the shell caving in.
Not me - grip n rip!! 😂 but honestly I was most afraid of the tension rods bending because of how long they are. This thing kept the tuning and just kept going!
I hope you see this, Nick, and sorry for the delay. I had my rims off my snare and it fell on a floor tom stand. The knurled surface scraped the finish on the snare side bearing edge. It's not major damage, but it does need repair. Maybe a furniture repair shop can fix it? A drum repair guy told me to use a Sharpie, but I don't think so!
Ah, sorry to hear @mikej3888 ! If it’s hidden once the head and hoops are on, I’d say leave it. Black galaxy acrolite’s are powdercoated, so really the only option would be to get it re-powdercoated. Any automotive wheel shop could do it, though I’d check with them first to see if they can re-finish to have the galaxy look
@@NickCostaMusic- I see, Nick. And the Medium High no muffling is for sure my favorite tuning. (A bit John Bonham like to me!) Thank you!
Yeah - a bit of pop, but still a ton of body!
Yeah the snom was popular for about 4 months. Lol
lol - I’d rather have a side snare that’s dead, but that’s just me 🤷♂️
What if you just sand down bearing edges a little bit lightly?
I’d only do any alterations if the drum is difficult to tune. If it’s a minor flattening, it shouldn’t change the edge too much and provide an even surface. Go to far, and you’ll start cutting into the edge and have to re-shape.
I have one just like it, only silver sparkle, still has the original throwoff too. Does work best in the swampy, soggy tunings. What kind of stand did you find for it? I couldn't find one that sat low enough with 15" a basket, had to use floor tom leg cradle kit (didn't want to drill).
Oh nice! What kind of throw off came with it? I was trying to figure it out, but couldn't find anything.
I'm using the @ludwigdrumshq atlas classic flat based hardware. The snare stand not only fit the drum, got low enough without any issues
@@NickCostaMusic Thanks for the stand info, will look into it, the basket floor tom kit works, but not the most ideal as it rest on the lugs, and this drum uses center lugs. The throwoff is the WFL P-83 Snare Drum Strainer Throw off. Only part I'm missing is these drums also had a drum key holder.
This drum didn't have the extra holes for that drum key holder though. I wonder if it wasn't included since it was a school drum?
Could be.
Talk about a big side snare! Lol
Gotta pack the 🥩!!!
