- With the last few #snaresaturday videos focusing on the @LudwigDrumsHQ Acrolite, why don't we talk about its sibling in this video - the Ludwig Standard Aluminum S-102 Snare. Originally designed to be an even cheaper option than the acrolite, the Ludwig Standard Aluminum S-102 snare was another sleeper snare everyone ignored. Now, they sell for a similar price to the acrolite. Does it live up to the hype? Let's find out!

I use my Standard as an 80s high, dry, poppy Stewart Copeland type sound - it excels! Looking forward to this.
That's the exact tuning I left it at when I brought it back to school today. Kids loved the sound!
I have one of these, and a gold strata matching snare to my Standard kit. I just acquired a Supraphonic and this channel was extremely helpful in deciding to grab one! Thanks, great work here!
2 metal and 1 wood - you have a great collection there! Appreciate you following along and glad to hear the channel helped you with grabbing a supra - you won't be disappointed!
Medium High with the dampener off speaks to me. Like the ring at this tuning.
Proof you don’t need to break the bank to sound great, but we still want to lol.
Great playing and thanks for your wealth of knowledge. 🙏 God Bless
100% @thesmokymointainman . This drum isn’t overlooked as much as it was, which is why prices are increasing. Appreciate you checking out the vid!
Sounds great Nick, nice job. This drum , in my opinion, has a unique sound, even pop-ier than the Acros. I played one at my local drum store, and loved the sound. My favorite around medium, maybe medium high.
Appreciate the kind words, thanks @steverichdrummer ! I think I need to do a comparison vid between this and a 60s Acrolite 🤔. Pretty crazy this drum is also versatile, too.
I have this one. I need to go back and retune it again. Great sound snare in my opinion. It seems to me the dampener does a great job on low tuning, when it feels like without it the overtones feels out of tune. With the dampener, the sound comes out clearer and it still maintain some overtones. When you go to Mid-high, high and cranked, the dampener will remove the tonality and it’ll sound like a short cut only. The tonality is very good on high tuning and there’s no need for dampener in my opinion. I need to do this exercise on mine again and fix on a preferred one.
Spot on @dad.son_drums . I like a snare that’s pretty open, but can hear that vintage funk sound in the higher tunings with the dampener. I feel the same though about it, it’s a little too dry for me
The Ludwig standards are fantastic drums. I own four - one chrome plated, two with the "acro" finish, and one wood shell. The wood standard is basically a jazz festival with the standard hardware. I bought all of them about 7 or 8 years ago at extremely reasonable prices. Sadly, these are no longer "sleepers". The prices are kinda ridiculous, even for ones in rough shape.
Totally agree - I had friends who bought standard kits because they were so much cheaper than other vintage drums. Pretty wild the standard aluminum snare is as expensive as an acrolite!
For those who don't want to spring the cash for metal Ludwig snares, I think metal Premier snares are quite good and a cheaper option. Not seamless shells, but quality hardware and chrome plating and very good sound.
Agreed
Love when the community helps one another like this - thank you, @ForeverDownByLaw ! Are they aluminum or steel?
I only have experience with the steel. I have a 6.5x14 Premier steel, which is voiced like a brighter Supro. A bit more ring and cut, but can be dampened to be a decent substitute.@@NickCostaMusic
Nice!
Really liked this one in most of the tunings. The lows are great though! Thx for sharing Nick! 🥁👏
And to think, this was made to be even cheaper than the Acrolite. This thing surprised me at low tunings, too. Tons of body for a shallow aluminum shell!
@@NickCostaMusic Yes indeed! 👍
Sounds good, yet different than an Acro. I've always suspected the bead has an effect on the sound due to how it breaks up/disperses sound waves and air within the drum. I'd say this sounds a bit more controlled than an Acro, not quite as exciting imo, but still good. Seems like it would be a good James Brown drum.
Totally @ForeverDownByLaw . Crank it up, throw the internal dampener on, and lay it down!
Like the acro, they ain't cheap no mo
Word got out…
it's a great drum for mic'n - very transparent and punchy
Totally, or even for situations without mics!
Are they spun shells like the Supra and Acro as well?
From what I read, yes - it’s a spun ludalloy shell, just without the center bead
