  • On May 9, Russia commemorated the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War with a military parade held in Moscow’s Red Square. In addition to approximately 16,000 troops, the newest military technology in Russia’s arsenal also participated, including the T-14 Armata battle tank.
    VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky attended the weekend's celebrations in Moscow, speaking with attendees who came out to display their patriotism for the motherland.

    It's better having a military parade once a year than actually being at war all the time all over the world. Just saying.

      Xa Ven Yeah, they're only constantly at war with their neighbors, which is much better. Every time Putin has political trouble he invades something and the dopes put on their little patriotic hats and start chanting death to America.

    I wish VICE would be more neutral. Videos like this aren't gonna convince Russian supporters to change their views. It'll just confirm their belief its them against western imperialism.
    And I know the May Day like parades appear threatening to us in the west but is Russia the only country that has parades like this? No
    I hate that I'm sort of defending Russia & Putin but how is this different from the US having ww2 vintage planes flying in formations over DC this past weekend? I loved seeing our Mustangs & Superfortress fly over the White House and have no problem with Russia doing something similar.......
    That xenophobic rapping grandmom was a little ridiculous though lol

    • @chipo715
      @chipo715 9 років тому +2

      ***** funnily enough I pretty much agree with everything you just said. I dont personally watch VE day or May Day parades and think they are inherently threatening. But they are easy targets for people trying to push a narrative of the threatening foreign power who are arming themselves for war.
      I know exactly what you mean, I watch a video on youtube about new military hardware or F35s breaking the sound barrier almost at ground level and I think "damn that is cool. It gives me pride that my country can make stuff like that". I dont watch that and think "we are so badass I hope other countries are scared of us". But someone else may see it as US war mongering or western imperialism. I guess it's just different points of view.
      And yeah I guess our societies are different and Im of the opinion we are too politically correct and have made a society where people are afraid to say the wrong thing. And im not alone, again its media or certain groups that just wait for someone to say something that pisses them off and then think they have the right to bitch for the next 2 weeks.
      There is a way to have equality while not having everyone becoming whimps

    • @chipo715
      @chipo715 9 років тому +1

      ***** is the SU-34 the fairly new gen 5 fighter? I watched a video of one intercepting a UN jet in Russian airspace doing the wing tipping to let him know he had him. Was pretty cool.
      But the F35 has a bad reputation in the military because it's crazy expensive to produce and not as maneuverable as previous fighters. Some wanna move towards unmanned planes & bring back the F22s. The best thing about the F35 is it's amazing stealth capabilities but that is already being improved on other models in development.
      My favorite planes we had/have are the ww2 P51 Mustangs, the vietnam B-52 Stratofortress, and the workhorse for our ground troops the A-10 Warthog. The A-10 is the shit, it looks big and cumbersome for a modern jet but it is crazy durable, rarely breaks, is loved by the pilots, and most importantly loved by the ground troops because it's the best close air support ever made. The plane is designed specifically for the 30mm Avenger cannon and just is encased in armor. And having a badass shark mouth paint scheme on the nose just tops it off.
      Do Russians aircraft do paint schemes for specific types or something? anytime i see a russian aircraft it has that black paint scheme the migs were famous for

    I don't wanna brag or anything but here in Vienna we had an awesome anniversary celebration WITHOUT any military presence at all. It was right in front of one of our imperial palaces, the Vienna Philharmonics played Beethoven's 9th on a lovely spring evening and there were over 15.000 people attending. A contemporary witness told us her hideos story about how GeStaPo arrested and later executed her mother and we payed respect to the victims of the Nazi regime while also celebrating the liberation. The ambassadors of the "Big 4" were sitting right next to one another witthout any problems whatsoever. I just don't understand how showing off your latest military hardware in an enormous parade is an appropriate way of paying respect to the millions of Soviets that died in the war...

    This parade has been happening since 1945. This isn't anything new. Its a great parade where ALL the allies and more were invited to participate. If they choose not to come this year, shame on them, not shame on the Russian Federation.
    This is a great parade to respect all those who died in the second world war. I'd really disappointed everyone who watches VICE can't stop talking shit about how terrible the Russian government is for once.

    Military parades are common in most countries and are traditional. They are used to show strength and build patriotism, plus its great fun for kids (lol). Anyway it's nice to see that vice made a documentary about it, seeing as Russia probably increased their budget for this years parade, due to its current economic state and not to mention the fact that they are on the brink of another cold war (did it actually end in 1991 or just evolve?). Parades were an easy way of keeping appearances with the world and your own people at least during the 20th century. I've been to a couple of victory day parades in Russia as a kid and had some good times, thats all I have to say about that.
