Me! I have a 27G patio pond that I built for less than $80 including fish and plants! I've got longfin gold and leopard danios, a rescued red-tailed shark, albino gold mystery snails, water hyacinth (and some "pest" snails they brought with them), aponogeton, water onion, duckweed, anubias, java windelov, and anacharis. I have a sponge filter, and a little shelf I made into a trickling waterfall too. I found the liner that you suggested at home depot, and I think I'm going to get one, since I like the round shape better, and I'm using a rectangular container.

Great to see someone with the same hobby !! I have similar set up but in a larger setup. I have 3 tiered fish pond, the first upper level is approx 250cmx250cmx100cm deep (8ftx8ftx3ft depth) and filled with water hyacinth for major filtering purpose, no fish.
Middle level pond is roughly 300cmx300cmx60cm deep (10ftx10ftx2ft), with tilapias as fish (they breed like crazy) and dwarf water bamboo plants in pots with gravel as media (dwarf water bamboos are so hardy that they don’t mind what kind of media you use such as earth, sand, or gravel).
The bottom pond is the largest one 400cmx300cmx120cm deep (13ftx10ftx4ft deep), with koi fish, and water poppy (provides shade) + echinodorus palaefolius (locally here they are called water jasmine) as plants.
The reason I use hardly and easy to care for plants is because I’m too lazy to care for them (other than reducing their numbers; especially water hyacinth and water poppy since they grow so fast).
I live in tropical weather and these plants thrive here.

I loved this so much. I wish I could have a pond, but every time we try, the neighborhood raccoons destroy it. Doesn't matter where we put it, what's in it... They annihilated everything, every time. So no ponds for us. I'll have to live that pond life vicariously through you 🤣

      3. Catch them and figure out where to put them
      4. Build pond and enjoy.
LOL. There's too many, it's illegal to kill them because they're not a threat. They don't carry rabies here and are, somehow, fairly friendly. Anywho, as much as I'd like a pond, it's not going to happen at this particular house. I could never hurt a raccoon anyway, they're just doing as they do. It's also illegal to trap and release them elsewhere lol.

We had a 2’ x 6’ x 3’ deep metal stock tank in the ground fish pond just off our back deck for 11 years. We had water lilies and arrow plant potted in the base of tank and a rush plant on top of 2 cement blocks on one end. Also had floating plants. Originally added 8 3” gold fish that later multiplied to 14 over time. We put in a filter system on the outside of pond with a waterfall entry to run during the spring, summer & fall + a ‘bubbler’ all year round. Had a piece of cork wood that birds could land on in the center as well. Added a stock tank heater during the winter to keep the fish alive. This was in northeast corner of Kansas. Planted a variety of annuals, perennials and a rose bush on 3 sides of the pond. Loved sitting on our deck listening to the water fall and the many insects and frogs that also enjoyed the area.

I have a little plastic patio pond with a bamboo foutain I got from a friend. I went out to my retention pond and caught some minnows to stock it. You need to get a plant called parrots feather. It's really beautiful and would work great up top. The mint you where talking about will make a huge root mass that would clog your holes in the top very quickly. Overall though it look great. I love watching your videos and am glad you are starting to do some new things.

And small flowering plants would be good beside the shelf of grassweed I think.
The frog pot was a great idea. It adds a nice touch
The brown dirt is alright, but it makes it look less cleaner than say...smooth gray/black rocks or white smooth pebbles.
Would it be nice to add a "zen" rock, a big jagged one, so you can grow moss on the rock or some succelent varieties? Behind the plants so it adds a nice backdrop?

@@xburningindigo Ive learned a lot this past year about fish keeping, specifically goldfish. I realized it was WAY overstocked with goldfish. They are huge poop producers and I had not cycled the water to make it safe for them. I upgraded to a 40 gl tub but The water still got very hot as it was above ground. I eventually re-homed those fish and upgraded to a 100 gallon stock tank from tractor supply. I stocked it with 8 oranda goldfish instead of common goldfish as they don’t grow quite as large. I have lots of filtration and plants and do 75% water changes every week. It’s in my air conditioned and heated sunroom so it’s out of the elements. There was a lot to learn but I love it! Best of luck!

That is a lovely little pond, wish we had something similar over here. I made myself a filter housing in pottery class in the shape of a fish and bought a plastic round planter for a mini pond which I'm quite excited with :) I'll have to do a vid soon

The Megan Experience The fish take care of the mosquito problem. I live in SoCal and they can be a problem but with adequate plants and fish they really weren’t even an issue.

@AquaPros. You should of taken your time to draw on this project, I feel like. By sacrificing one shelf to make two holes for Surface skimming and overflow (in case of rain water). Using one net basket and some random plastic or netting. You could of sectioned off an area for the pipes then place a simple Net from one of those cheat butterfly catchers to create a surface skimmer for debris like leaves etcetera. Then the space around the empty void. Fill with gravel and plant something. The water will flow over the plant and act as a natural extra debris catcher. Then, a bit of black fly net siliconed to that particular shelf and cut open holes to plant in the net together with Java moss. So it becomes a cliff of plants, essentially. Then continue like before.
Pump pushes the water up into that biological filter, which I suggest is placed underneath the gravel. Creating a semi-aquaponic system. Overflowing into the pond again. Once the tank was established... With a pretty much moss cliff with select few spots of planting. Throw in some shrimp you intend to cull and voila!

Looking great mate. I have an old whiskey barrel that hangs out in the garden in the summer, trying to raise some fancy goldy fry this summer. I went buy my usual annual water lettuce and hyacinth only to find out it's been banned here in the UK! Along without elodea, my go to moves in the pond!
I like your filter a lot, I run something similar on my koi pond, I use Norfolk reeds, iris and Marsh marigold in mine, mint was way too invasive for me and blocked up all my pipework a couple of summers back! Good Times

I have a 25 gallon half barrel pond in my front yard, right by the steps to the front door. I had it for about 6 years, I think, but this last winter it froze solid and killed everything. It was always a nature pond, so no filtration. This year I got a bunch of aerator plants and some cattails and a water lily and some fish, but the cattails aren't doing too well. I think the birds are sitting on them and bending them. One of the plants died. I'll see how it goes as the summer progresses. I would like to get another pond with a filter, so I can more fish, but I have a very small yard and no place for one. Plus, I've heard a lot of those filters use tons of electricity and are super expensive to operate and I'm cheap. My pond requires no maintenance at all. I just add water if it's low. But because I keep a lot of plants and low fish I've never had a problem and only once in 6 years did I ever have green water. I got some string algae. :/
