    You really made a stock pond form very lovely. Such a great budget example for others.

    you should use lava rock in the filter, the porosity / surface area means it can hold many many times more beneficial bacteria than smooth stones. love the build!

    I had good experiences with the following technique with premade ponds.
    Dig the hole a little bit bigger, level the plastic bin, on a sand bed, fill the pond half way up with water and then use a water/sand/earth slurry to fill up the gap between the pool and the ground sounding it. The gap will be perfectly closed.
    Then fill up the pool completely and repeat with the sand or mud slurry.
    It's a quick method.

    I have a pond and have upgraded 3 times. One point of improvement for you to implement. Your filter is too close to the waterfall. When you get the chance move your filter and water intake to the opposite end of the pond and place at the bottom. You will then be able to filter and most importantly move the entire pond water system. You do not want dead zones of stagnant water. You will be amazed on how bright and disease free your pond water will become.

Thank you so much for sharing ❤❤❤

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  6 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! Yeah, if you put it in a sunny spot, just try to get as many plants in there as you can, especially plants that will provide a good amount of surface cover, for example water lily’s, as the pads will provide shade to the pond. This will stop too much light getting to the pond and causing algae, it should also help the water temp from getting too high. Good luck with pond build!

    Great informative video. I was nailed to watching everything you shared here 😂. Great job 👏
    I was wondering though, I've got an enclosed fenced garden: if I did something like that, how would wildlife get into my garden for such a pond 😮? Or wouldn't it 🤔?
    Many thanks for giving me ideas, particularly as to what plants (I've never heard of 😅) I might be advised to invest in ❤

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi there! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! Yeah, if there’s no gap under the fence some wildlife will struggle to find the pond.. obviously dragonfly and birds will be able to enjoy it still.. I know some people try to leave a gap somewhere along the fence line to help wildlife move around, luckily for me there is a gap under my gate, so the toad must have come in there. You never though, a bird might drop off a bit of frogspawn for you!!
      Yeah, I think all the plants I used are either evergreen or perennial, apart from the water lettuce which won’t survive the winter here in the UK, so I’ll have to remove it when the temps start to get too low. 😊

    • @christinekane6059
      @christinekane6059 7 місяців тому

      @GingerFishyOfficial Wow- that's such a GREAT amount of GOOD information 👌. Thank you.
      I know I've got a frog 🐸 in my garden (somewhere): him must have hid in the flowers/plants I had in my old koi pond at our old place (16 years ago). So despite the amount of renovations I've had, carried out to the garden areas, it's a miracle he's still alive. You should have heard him in Feb/April calling for a mate 😀.
      So another reason: to encourage the dragonflies back. We used to have quite a few, but the last couple of years, not so much.
      Anyway, many thanks for your prompt response and further suggestions: really helps 👍

  • @rosepetal45
    @rosepetal45 6 місяців тому

    Really helpul video 😊. A couple of questions: would a solar pump be powerful enough for the bog filter? Could you give a rough idea of costing for this project? ( I know you said some items were free) and lastly, where do you source your pond plants - shop or online? TIA 😊

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  6 місяців тому

      Thank you! It may work ok if you in have plenty of sun. The only thing you would need to do is to make sure the waterfall filter is not too much higher than the pond. Otherwise when the power goes off at night the water will back flow out of the filter and back into the pond. You could add a non-return valve which would stop this from happening. Personally though I think if I was going solar I would go for a solar air pump, perhaps attached to a small sponge filter, with air stone inside. This would still filter the water, oxygenate it and add some slight water movement.
      Cost wise i think this project was about £300. Biggest expense was the slate for around the edge, but if you’re lucky you may be able to find something similar on eBay or facebook marketplace, same goes with the actual pond liner.
      Hope that helps! 😊

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  6 місяців тому +1

      It’s only requires a small low powered pump so it may work if you have a good amount of sun. I don’t think it would work too well here in the UK as we don’t really get enough sun. Also depending on the size of the pond it may be best not to add fish, as oxygen levels may drop down at night when the pump turns off and potentially cause a problem.

    • @GingerFishyOfficial
      @GingerFishyOfficial  7 місяців тому +1

      Thankyou! Yeah, the edge of the pond has little grooves around it, which I think is for overflow, and I’m hoping any excess water can be soaked up by the plants around the pond. I’ll see how it goes though. I’m actually just in the process of adding an overflow pipe to my big pond that I built last year, which I’ll be showing in the 1 year update video.

    It looks incredible and obviously the wildlife agrees. I can see that you have done research on the plants. Did you only use indigenous plants or non- indigenous also?

      It was a bit of a mix of both native and non-native plants to be honest.. basically it was what my local pond plant supplier had in stock. The wildlife seems to like it either way though! 🐸

    Another great video! A word of warning though Pyracantha grows very quickly and once established can be very difficult to remove. If you keep it make sure you keep on top of pruning the vicious spiky beast!

      Thank you! And thanks for the tip, I will make sure to keep on top of the trimming. I was actually hoping to put a big fern in that corner but couldn’t find one in any of my local garden centres.
