Leica M11 Monochrome first look!

- I got my hands on the M11 Monochrome and took it out to get a feel for it on the first day owning it! I'll take a quick first impressions of it and get it out for a few test shots.

Appreciate you taking time to make this. I’m thinking of buying an M11 mono and this helps.
The black coating on your M11 is an extreme resistant and strong special epoxy made of. That coating does not leave finger prints and will not wear out. No scratch.
Kevin somehow missed this when you first put it up. enjoyed this one. Very curious to see how you get on with it over some time. Looks very sweet indeed. Cheers

The black is a super strong black epoxy coating. Much more than just a black paint. And no finger prints left on this camera body.

Nice, probably not enough for me to upgrade from the m10m, but I do wish the live view was snappier on my m10m

Kevin, I’ve only just started watching your channel but once I got started I couldn’t stop. Like your style and presentation. I’m also torn between which I enjoy more, your product reviews and shared images or your Leather Craft. Those are beautiful bags and camera straps. I especially like the strap for the Leica Frankfurt. Kevin, at one time I owned the M10 M but sold it out of guilt. I’m a Theologian and Educator with a wife and teenager daughters and simply couldn’t justify in my own head owning both the M10R and the Monochrome. That said however, I can’t justify now owning the M11 and the M9 Monochrome either, but I don’t care.😇 My question to you is this, for my M9M, if I can only afford one 50 - 50 APO or Noct 50 f1.2 - which would you recommend? Is it a loaner? That might explain the smaller box and why the cover of the hot shoe is missing…
Nope not a loaner. I bought it myself on launch day. This is the retail box. The hot shoe cover is missing because I pulled it off to put the EVF on.
@@kevinfickling6384 Thanks. That's stunning. The higher the price the less box you get 😆. I once had a M10, I really liked the box, that was first class. My first Leica I purchased 1986 or so, a Non-TTL M6, still have it of course and works perfectly fine. The boxes back then were similar to your M11M one, totally different of course but kinda the same size.
What draws you to a non Auto-focus camera? Not judging, just asking.
Great question! I think it’s a combo of things for me. Also I do have many autofocus cameras to compliment or do a job you can’t with a range finder. For me part of it is the nostalgic side of it and nailing that focus. When you get a hit it feels great! But as I’ve used it and gotten used to the system it’s really transitioned into a tool to do my job. The 28 and 50mm focal lengths on a Leica M camera for me has just become second nature. To the point that I’m often not even looking through the viewfinder. I know where my focus is based on distance and the focus tab on my lens. I’m able to judge the framing as well. It’s not something I do when I need the ultimate framing precision but there are times where I’m in an intense situation with very little time to nail it and I just switch into that mode of making the photo no matter what it takes. One more quick thing unrelated to the manual focus aspect but specific to an M camera. In my opinion with the right lens nothing renders like an M. It’s just got a look to it.
@@kevinfickling6384 Thanks. I'm a Sony A7R shooter for years. Bought a Q2Mono a year back. Really would like to get a Q3 when its out. I would use the Q2M for night shooting with high ISO -- Q3 for day along with Sony. I travelled and plan to shortly on a motorcycle around the world in the most difficult places -- so less is more. Historically that meant a A7R with a Tamron 28-70 for quick shooting and range. I think adding the other two in my case would be great -- although only shooting with a 28mm lens is constricting but if Q3 has a 60mp sensor I can crop. As for M11 -- It does seem cool to have the small compact size monster -- but I dont think I have the discipline to focus manually and miss shots when I will only be in a situation once and cant go back. Anyway, thanks. I'll keep watching. Post more of your images.

Brass is not a better quality material. Actually, brass is more fragile and vulnerable than alluminium or titanium. It is just heavy and not create more value to Leica. That is why all the MP models are not made of brass.
If you are referring to the MP film camera. It is made from brass. External top and bottom plate and parts etc.

Linked to Apple is insane! More likely to use your Apple phone, than the M11 . Aluminum is a poor choice! Give time! Paint flaking off and sporting numerous dings! I have used Monochome from Leica M9 and others! I was not overwhelmed. Rather shoot c-41 fim, scnan as BW!
Not a camera for everyone for sure. I enjoy shooting film too!
