Update: The M11 has been SOLD! 💐 M11 Monochrom is the day to day camera now. ❤
I see 8 months have passed but is the this still for sale
Go Matt go! Love seeing Leica sharing this with you.
Thanks for the love, Nico!
Great work, Matt. Always appreciate your reviews! Glad they sent you one!
Thank you Taylor! 👊🏻
You seem so convinced with the m11 monochrom! From the weight to the sensor and the images as a whole, they put a smile on your face! Get it Matt!
The biggest smile on Matt's face was when he said, "Am I getting this? You know the answer to that. YES!"
Real excited about this one, been waiting since the M11 launch!
Always am so happy to see your videos at any Leica release and especially on this one.
My man.
I remember a video about a year ago when you first demo'd the new M11 you said you'd be all over the monochrom version if they ever come out with one. Well, you are a man of your word....Congrats on getting your dream camera!
Thanks Gerry! Excited for this one.
This is the perfect camera for you Matt, and we can’t wait to see what you create with it! 🧡
Y'all are the best! Thank you for all of the support and everything to come! ❤💐
This camera looks so clean! It’s such an interesting concept as well!
Just wow, ISO 100k still looks perfectly usable. This is pretty insane.
This mono sensors is totally different world, just like getting the pre production model WOW! I have Q2 mono for a year now, use it for BTS on corporate sets as my personal cam and more and more clients ask for those photos. Would be a killer combo with M10 or M11 with 50 or 35. Thank you Matt!
BTS that's a sick idea for a BW camera. love it
The Q2 Monochrom is such a fun one as well. Not that I need one, but I would love to see them expand the Monochrom offerings to the SL system.
Nicely done. Thank you.
haven’t seen you this giddy in a long time…good for you Matt. Can’t wait to see what you do with your new camera.
Appreciate it, Bill! Thanks for watching!
I would love if the next monochrome camera had a built-in infrared filter that you could switch on and off (similar to the ND filter built on the X100V)
That's an interesting idea! The built-in ND on the X100 series is more useful than people think.
I use and love Leica. But I’m more interested in the new Pentax K-3 mono than this:).
Same honestly just because I can actually afford it!
Super cool to see other manufacturers start to experiment with the monochrome formula. How soon until we see something from Fuji or Ricoh?
@@mattdayphoto I only shoot BW, and I shoot Leica M and Ricoh GR. I would love a GR with this K3 sensor!
Idk bout y’all but film still takes the cake over any of those hyper clinical m11m files!
Lenses add character.
@@johnkasianowicz6536 Lenses add a majority of the character, and film is a better sensor.
One place to go is fully adjustable viewfinder framelines. Being able to have the optics and the framelines adjust so that 21 or 15mm lenses work well optically without external viewfinder, live view, or evf, or to accommodate the rangefinder system for telephoto lenses, without needing to use liveview/evf. That would be an instant buy for me. It would mean inventing a new optical rangefinder mechanism (maybe stick an mini lens system inside the rangefinder mechanism), but this is where advancement would go to the next level. Miniaturization and technology has advanced to the point where such thing should be possible.
Pentax: Hey we got a new monochrome camera!
Leica: And I took that personally
Awesome video dude. Love it! Quality is insane ❤
Thank you!
Worth every penny
I worked for a company that manufactured industrial machine vision cameras. Monochromatic image sensors are often favored when light sensitivity is a higher priority over color data. I've always found it interesting how there was no shortage of monochrome
cameras for industrial / CCTV use, but no handheld digital cameras!
That's interesting to hear!
Reallyt like your style of presentation and your passion. Great review Matt
Thank you! Appreciate the kind words.
What a gorgeous and amazing camera. If I had the money, I wouldn’t think twice.
Gotta thin the herd for it, but for me it'll be worth it!
@@mattdayphoto definitely
Thanks for your excellent Video. Best wishes from Portugal. All the best!
Thanks for watching!
The redundancy is great! I hope they’ll have this in the Q3
It seems like an easy bet that they will.
I hadn't thought about that, but that's a good idea! I'd love to see them add this in the Q system.
Today, I finally bought my first real Leica camera. A few years ago, I bought one of the m mount bessa cameras, sold it, and got a Leica CL. While the CL is great for what I do, the build quality was incredibly lacking, constantly needing rangefinder calibration, and just didn't have my confidence in its structure. Today, I bought an M8, and can't wait to test it out. While this is unrelated to the video, I just had to get it out lol. Super excited.
Super excited for you! The M8 was actually my first digital Leica I ever bought, back in 2014 I believe. Hope you enjoy yours!
Killer video. This is my dream camera. I am starved to shoot solely b&w. thanks so much for sharing! keep killin it!
Thanks for watching!
Interesting video Matt. That camera does look insanely powerful. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it in the coming months.
Thank you, Colin! 👊🏻
@@mattdayphoto cheers buddy
Any film camera with a pallet of black & white film and a vacation > Leica's hope and dreams
I'm glad Leica is making digital m's more affordable/accessible to everyone though 👍
Due to my experiences the best “color” camera for monochrome pictures is the Hassy X2D. I think you can get a better quality file for a Leica price…
It was an interesting experience to compare Leica to the Hassy… as never wanted to change from Leica. Now I did.
Two of the most iconic brands in photography in a cage match!
That's interesting, I've never shot with the X2D.
@@mattdayphoto you should try… or I cand send you a bw sample. It gives a native 16 bit file.
It's the smallest nuances that make the greatest differences. That's my note on photo philosophy. So I totally understand where you're coming from with the intentionality behind shooting BW on a BW camera. I'm the same way with a rear LCD. I'd rather have it eliminated so my mind isn't wandering with the possibility of checking my images. Cheers man, super exciting release!
Totally get that. We'll see if I bust out the gaffer tape on this one. Haha.
Great job on this video, Matt. It looks like an amazing camera. I really wish that Fujifilm would come out with a monochrome X pro or something along those lines.
With Pentax making their own and even the Leica Monochrom cameras becoming more and more popular on the used market, I really think it's just a matter of time before we see that. Seems like there is a lot of market there among the Leica/Fuji crowd. A lot of overlap from what I've seen over the years. Thanks for watching, Joe!
i was hoping we would be seeing you with it!
Thankful for their support and letting me check them out ahead of launch! It's a little thing, but it makes me happy. Haha.
This is the most unnecessary camera (imo) that I have ever wanted. It looks beautiful and so fun to use. Thanks for the great video.
Haha, love it. Thanks for watching!
14:00 "... improve ... resolution..." No, they cannot. They've reached the practical limits of physics already with cramming 60MP onto a 24mm by 36mm surface. Diffraction kicks in at f8 on the M11. The more pixels they squeeze into 24mm by 36mm, the fewer usable apertures remain without reaching a diffraction limit. On the M11, there already is a trade-off between a large depth of field and maximum detail resolution. When shooting f8, f11 or smaller for a larger depth of field, you are sacrificing detail resolution already. Adding more pixels will actually not result in more resolution in any practical sense. Pixels do not equate resolution. In that sense, you are absolutely right that they maxed out the M11.
I think we'll see improvements in electronic shutters, readout speeds, global shutter. The endgame not just for the M11 will be to eliminate the need for a mechanical shutter all together.
IBIS in an M would also be amazing.
There are still lots of improvements they can make in other areas.
I desire this camera
Matt is a real one ☝️
If I eventually win the lottery the M11 Monochom is my dream purchase. Looking forward to seeing you use one when yours arrives.
Appreciate it, Morris! Should be here in a few days. 🥳
I’d love to see direct comparison to a converted M11 file to the monochrome
My camera *should* be here this coming Wednesday. If my M11 hasn't sold by then, I'll try to shoot some side-by-side examples for a video!
Nice to hear someone who shoots B&W review the camera. Can you speak to the benefit of the monochrome sensor vs the ability to adjust the color channels before converting to B&W on a m11?
You've brought up a great point! I'll try to cover some of that in an upcoming video, maybe when I share a video on processing these files when my camera arrives.
beautiful video.. a question in what position do you set the iso and the speeds and aperture of doafragma, for street photos...?
Finally... what iso do you feel more like to avoid noise in the photos?
I think the next advancement that we should see is the RGBW sensor.
I just purchased an M3 from KEH about 2 months ago and bought a new Zeiss 50mm for it and love it. I never knew how much easier it was to focus vs an SLR, I am trying to decide whether to buy a digital M next or maybe stick with the M3 and try different lenses.
Also in addition to my comment - I am super impressed you able to keep yourself under control during that conference call and not have to go throw up during it. #impressive. #control. 😅
Wait for the M27
I recently purchased the M3 for an Asia trip and really fell in love with the focusing and ease of use. Noting that I use an external light meter, until I have better bearings on sunny 16 ☀️. I just purchased a Leica m10m and honestly it doesn’t feel the same as the m3, it’s heavy, uncomfortable to hold and having that much cash tied into a single camera isn’t worth it. For context I also have the Ricoh GR3 and this by far is much better for the digital itch when you want to switch from film. It’s compact and setting your colour profiles makes it a breeze to simple download and print or upload to socials. So to answer your question, I really think it’s not worth it, because of how many other fantastic options are out there, even the Fuji x100f is better, having recently sold one
Hi Matt, maybe they don’t need to add anything more. After all, the difference between an M2 and an MP is the light meter, which is not much change over 40 years. Cheers.
IBIS seems to be the main thing people are always asking about, if and when they could add that into an M body. But make too many changes to the M body and eventually, it may lose that M feeling.
What you have to say about the M11 Monochrom being an endgame camera is really interesting. I’m a car enthusiast as well as a photographer. the car market is trending in the same direction in my opinion. The internal combustion engine has been perfected and at this point, car companies are just adding horsepower like camera companies are adding megapixels. Where do we go from here?
More dynamic range and highlight rolloff?
A 16-bit sensor is the only thing I can imagine. Perhaps a stacked sensor removing the mechanical shutter, taking away one more moving part. And maybe a built-in rangefinder calibration measurement. It still would need to be sent to Leica to get fixed, but knowing it is getting out of alignment would be useful.
And, as @Brett Hough suggests, IBIS.
We're spoiled, that's all there is to it. Haha.
Your future video about the Visoflex 2 will also be highly interesting... I've been hesitant about: does it ruin the rangefinder experience or is it a must for older guys and/or tele lenses?
IT’S NICEEEEEE
It was controversial when Leica first introduced the Monochrom, but it has, I think, been an ingenious move on their part. Yes, go get it.😊❤
Well said!
The fact you find it hard to talk without smiling constantly during this video speaks volumes.
Haha, couldn't help it on this one!
"no matter how you look at it, that's alotta bread" lolol
The M11 and M11M are peak M camera. Don't know what else they could do or *should* do. Most things are better left alone and it won't take long before the "need" for innovation doesn't make these M cameras anymore
That's where myself and a lot of people are, I think. Improvements and innovation are great as long as it still feels like an M.
I had a feeling Matt would have a video! Haha
Thanks for watching!
I feel like the last thing that's missing in M cameras is IBIS
In 3 years I might buy one used.
Honestly not a bad idea at all!
Despite those improvements, I think I will still keep my M8.2, Q2M, and M10M unless there is a Reporter or a Stealth edition available.
Whew, you've got quite the kit there! That's awesome.
Love seeing it. Feel like it's the worst kept secret lately though.
The internet these days. Haha.
Does the standard M11 have rear sapphire glass like M11 monochrome?
The original M11 uses the Gorilla Glass, similar to the M10 Monochrom.
if I had the money I would go down the same route, I know they hold value well so it's as much an investment as it an outlandish purchase.
In terms of improvement, I agree it's everything you want. Maybe a built in ND or yellow filter
Built in filters could be really interesting! And the value holding much better on Leica lenses and bodies is definitely helpful. I've taken bigger gambles on less expensive cameras/lenses, if that makes sense.
Shutting down the haters before they even can type lol love it
I've made enough videos and received enough comments to know what to expect, especially on topics like a $9000 black and white camera. Haha.
Digital photography aside, how much do you use to spend while travelling with only film?
The M11 is a bridge too far financially, but I’m glad both versions exist. Currently using the Q2, which was a real stretch…couldn’t give up color, but set up as a B&W camera w/DNG. As much as I can afford.
That's still a killer setup! The Q system has proven itself to be a mainstay in the Leica lineup. Excited to see where they take that system as well.
One day they will be able to add IBIS into these M bodies. Other than this maybe higher resolution screens and EVF add ons. But I suppose with the low noise, the shutter speeds could be high enough now on the Monochrom wouldn’t even need IBIS.
I find this is already true with the M10 Mono. ISO 6400 doesn’t look much different to ISO 160. In Auto mode (aperture priority) I have the shutter set to 2x focal length or faster, and this is enough to keep things plenty sharp.
I'm excited to see how I like the Visoflex 2 on the M11M. I wouldn't want them to add an EVF to the rangefinder viewfinder, however I don't know how much I'll like having the EVF attachment on at all times. We'll see. And the shutter speed/low noise point is what I have said to others as well! I was shooting inside my house at like 1/2000 of a second. 🤣
OMG!!
Honestly, if I had the bread to get one I absolutely would
Feels like all I could ask for in a digital camera for every day use.
@@mattdayphoto If my clients didn’t need color then I would be all in for it - I’m highly tempted toward the M11 as it stands
After the end game, your next level minus the low light is a Ricoh GR. Once you get used to it, the raw images it produces will any kill camera.
I've never owned or shot with any of the Ricoh GR digital cameras, but friends that have them swear by them!
"Report as pornography" lol! Damn that's an awesome camera. Next time my boss asks me how much I want to make, I'll tell him "enough to afford a M11 monochrome". Have fun dude, hope to see more of it soon.
Haha, thank you! Appreciate the support.
the leica MA11 DAY
where did u get that signet ring?
A local maker! seasonshandmadejewelry.com/
My guess is that we'll soon see the M11P with the same body improvements.
I was so thrown off by this one coming out so soon, all of my bets are off. Haha. That would be great to see those body improvements though!
Is it worth paying up so much for the M11M vs M10M? Are the extra pixels really worth so much money? If you are shooting under normal daylight conditions? I guess the light meter is much better? Highlight biased if want it so the risk of blowing the highlights is less? For those that will spend this money, the Q is M11M vs M10Rrather than buying a MC vs non MC Leica.
Take away the LCD and it would be a digital M that I would actually consider over my M3.
Put tape over the screen… problem solved
Totally agree, get rid of the screen and it’s perfect.
Gaff tape goes a long way. Haha. I gaffed over the LCD on my X100T years ago and it did the trick to keep me from constantly chimping, especially having an EVF in the viewfinder.
I smell what you're stepping in, but the body alone is $9k!!! Holy balls 😅 very cool how the sensor allows more light in and renders it better than a color sensor, but I can't justify $9k+ (with lens) for that. But im happy you have one and enjoying it!
The m11 is an amazing machine. One of the youtubers i follow has gone thru 4 of em since January.
did they improve the wake up time?
I personally don't remember hearing or reading anything about the start up time in the changes/improvements on this iteration. Will try to share that in a video when I get mine.
@@mattdayphoto I have the m10, wake-up time too long that i missed a lot of shots, now I shoot with gr3, the wake time is so short that it feel like shooting a manual rangefinder, almost. I hope leica can improve that since they were the creator of rangefinder and costs $$$.
Matt who do you sell you camera through… eBay, Adorama, or privately?
It all depends. I try to sell privately when I can, just in order to make the most possible money back on my purchases. Through my Instagram, to friends I know, etc. But I've also sold things to KEH for the sake of ease and speed. You won't make as much back since they're a reseller, they have to price accordingly, but it's immediate and takes away the hassle of holding onto gear that just isn't selling. I've never sold on eBay myself. Hope that helps!
Maybe the next thing they can add is IBIS
Leica M is a manual focus camera. The point of the M system is to not have IBIS. Will never have IBIS. If you need IBIS, go with the SL2.
@@kaushalkashyap4306 i dont want no SL. I know it is manual, and Even if its manual, doesnt mean you cant add IBIS.
This seems to be the most popular request! Time will tell.
So tempting but I do not believe my eyesight is good enough for a rangefinder. Can not wait to see the work you create with the M11 Monochrome Matt.
Thanks, Eric! Hope you're still enjoying that X100V. ❤
@@mattdayphoto It's is in my everyday camera and the camera I've used the most. If I every come across a spare $9200 the M11 Monochrome may join the family.
I wish i could afford this 😢😢😢😢😢😢
Having more options in resolution is great. Having Less options in controls is great. This is why theses justification videos never work, it's always better to say you like a Leica because of the fell and not the technical side.
Matt - is your M11 still available?
Hey Michael, it sure is! If you'd like more info and photos of it, shoot me an email and I'll send it over!
The bayer filter array of a classic colour sensor effectively captures a signal that has half the bandwidth (equivalent to a quarter of the pixel count) on every colour channel. You would need a 240MP bayer sensor to rival this 60MP monochrome sensor in terms of sharpness, so there absolutely is a motivation for why you would want a camera like this.
Until I shot with it and really opened the files up, I didn't realize just how much of a difference it makes.
Im starting a go fund me to get this camera! HELP!
I think there might be two things worth an upgrade. First a global shutter like the new Sony. This way you can get rid of the shutter and flash at all speeds. Secondly a more modern/smarter OVF. What they are doing at this moment is not working great.
If only they would put a GPS tracker in these expensive cameras it would be great. In my country burglars don't get caught. I take my camera everywhere because it's not safe to keep it at my house. So a Leica is a everyday carry camera! :)
I love black & white like you do, but the thing that is great about color cameras shooting black & white is that you can manipulate the tones even better using stuff like the B&W mixer in Lightroom. Basically color cameras let you "color" grade black & white better than shooting natively in B&W, allowing you different "film stocks" in a way.
That being said the advantages and "purity" of the monochrome cameras are appealing, and you being eternally B&W I understand why you would just wanna put your head down and forget all that color mess. I bet you even set your live view/playback to B&W on the M11 now.
That's how I always use my M11, with the B&W film type set. But you've brought up a great point in the color channels, you won't have any of that information to adjust in a Monochrom file.
Help ! All the guys who sold me the film dream are all using digital cameras !
Matt still has his M6.
“Where do we go from here?” Matt… You and I both know that if the next version of the Monochrom comes out in an M6 body we’re buying it 🥲
Haha, I've never tried any of the "D" variants, without the LCD screen. M11MD? My initials? 🤔
The next step for Leica is the Leica M12 Sepia.
For true arteests.
A pity you couldn't have added a little warm tone and increased contrast to those images.
You can add toning in camera, but I wanted to share the files as minimally edited as possible for the first look at the camera.
Leica’s don’t depreciate like other cameras, correct?
The digital cameras definitely hold their value more than most digital cameras on the market. The film cameras on the other hand have only gone up. I bought my M6 TTL ten years ago for $1600 and it was mint. Nowadays that could get me roughly half of one.
@@mattdayphoto if you’re interested in trading your M11 for a Sony camera body and lenses in like new/open box condition, please let me know.
It's not improbable that Leica are going to have to completely rethink their whole game. They can't keep selling 1920s style tech to an audience that has immediate access to the highly-acclaimed Pentax K3III Monochrome. That looks like a DSLR and feels like a DSLR and works like a DSLR, and more importantly has a 26mp sensor. Which is far more user-friendly than 60, 36 or 18mp. And, is a bucket of cash cheaper. If Leica would consider addressing those issues, I would consider looking at one.
Leica's audience is mostly not professionals, it's enthusiasts
@@Noah-lj2sg At the end of the day it all comes down to matter of personal choice. It doesn't matter if you are a professional or an enthusiast or anything in between. If you decide Leica is the way you want to go, and if pride of ownership means al lot to you, then go for it. We all hold values that differ from everybody else, and because we are all highly individual, priorities will always be in the eye of the beholder. Your money, your choice. Be happy.
At first I thought you were doing a video on the new Pentax monochrome, but then I realized it was leicashit.
I have one word… bougie. 😜
a bougie camera hanging around a red neck. 🤣
nice Matt, but 9000 euros?? Not sure anymore.. Do not remember when salaries went crazy as inflation has been these days.
They kept the inflation down to 2-3% for this, compared to the M11 a year ago.
The only polarizing thing about leica is price/quality...
A debate that will likely never end. Haha.
@@mattdayphoto doesn't take anything away from the quality of of your photos and the quality of your youtube content. Been watching it for ages. Love it. Take care Matt. (Double of)
Dear Jesus, please help me not to react out of my flesh and sell everything for the M11 monochrome. Amen
If only I could justify spending $11.000 at my local Norwegian camera store …
adding hybrid viefinder and ibis would make it the endgame camera. far away from it so far i think
I will never spend that much money for a camera like M11 or Monochrome. I much prefer Hasselblad X2D. 10 times better in every situation
You should shoot them side by side!
@@mattdayphoto no need for that because i know I will love medium format over a FF camera. Especially X2D. A piece of art
10X better in every situation? Let's see....optical rangefinder vs EVF....rangefinder any day for street photography. Lens selection - no comparison - Leica wins by a huge margin. etc. etc. They are for different purposes. I tried my friend's X2D and for street photography and I'll stick with my Leica anyday...lighter and far better choice of lenses which are far smaller than XCD lenses so the Leica wins definitely for travel/street. So....not quite the exaggerated '10x in every situation!' They are for different purposes - for studio setup, yes the XCD is better. For spontaneous street photography (which is my preferred photography), Leica anyday.
@@Unknownresident621 stop talking dumb. EVF is better. 1.0 times magnification on X2D. It is larger than your rangefinder and it will performn better than rf in sunny days. You can not get sharp images with fast lenses on Leica.
You have every angle lens on Hasselblad. From very wide angle to tele.
Leica is a death company. Owned by Panasonic secretly. Lol. They use Pana technology

I mean it's cool and all but HP5+ pushed to 1600 in a decent contrast developer still wipes the floor with it.
By technical metrics probably not … but I’m with you. M11 money buys an M2/3/4 (or a Konica iiia) 1000 rolls and two holidays. You’ll have a messy bathroom and less free time but more fun.
Definitely not. Maybe if you’re printing silver gelatin, but the latitude, convenience, DR doesn’t come close to digital monochrom sensors. Maybe if you’re shooting medium format… but honestly I love film as much as probably everyone here- but film is also so so shitty for the environment. It’s terrible which is why I mostly switched from 35mm film to digital. Medium format film there are still many advantages so it seems much more justified…
@@D.Trider The ecological footprint is going to vary hugely. If you buy film made in your home country and process in Xtol and use a 40 year old camera (with no battery) vs buying a new digital camera and four li-ion batteries and cards every four years … you catch my drift.
@@mynewcolour well of course. But I can also run my car on used vegetable oil. Just saying the film photography for most that use mainstream processing/film stock is not sustainable nor convenient. It is however really fun and enjoyable. The original comment, highlighted 35mm hp5. I don’t see a huge benefit of 35mm film over full frame digital Leica. Unless of course you’re print SG images. Medium format/4x5 I believe provides enough aesthetic benefit to justify cost, processing time and environmental impact.
I like film, but precisely how would film wipe the floor with the M11 Monochrom?
At that price? nope
