    Two of the guys I worked with bought boxes like your score at the same time maybe 50+ years ago. One of the fellows kept his covered with a heavy vinyl-wool cover. It looks like the inside of your box, inside and out. The other guys box was almost black from the shop air. I bought all the tools and boxes of the guy with the covered box so I would have a work of craftsmanship of my own. Congrats with the find... Thanks for the videos.

    Thanks for the tip on the lathe dog on the drill bit. Nice score on the Tool Box.
    Look line you need to take a few thou off the end of the tale stock so the bits will seat, or rebuild the sleeve. Just a thought.

    • @PeterWMeek
      @PeterWMeek 9 років тому +1

      The alternative would be to relieve the shoulder at the base of the drill bit so that the taper can go deeper into the tailstock. It wouldn't take much on those few bits where the shoulder hits before the taper seats firmly. Morse tapers have specifications, but you find quite a bit of variation on things like maximum diameter, minimum diameter, and length. As long as the taper angle is correct and the taper seats before the shoulder hits (in the factory/shop test taper) it is considered good. A slightly large taper in the user's machine can let the shoulder hit first, so turning the shoulder back is sometimes needed. No need to continue the taper angle - a simple cylinder is OK as long as it is less than the largest diameter on the drill bit taper.

    We used to shim Model A axles with a a conical shim to get the wheel to fit. Since you are using a dog there wouldn't be much twisting on it, but it would be centered and tight. Just another view.
    Love your stuff....

  • @duobob
    @duobob 9 років тому

    I use the dog on the drill against the compound whenever the drill is larger than the taper or if I expect the drilling to be tough. It works well, and protects the drill and tailstock tapers. I also use that idea on Silver and Deming drills. What I have heard about, but never tried, is driving the tailstock with the carriage to power feed the drill. As I understand it, you make a connector bar (or whatever) that will hold the tailstock and carriage together, and gently snug but not tighten the tailstock to the ways, then engage the lead screw. Ever tried it?

    Hi mate.What an excellent find on that Gerstner box, this must be one of the cleanest around. That box is nice enough to put in the house. What a shame that you are unable to use that drill bit yourself. By now you must have some shares in that company, the amount of tools that you have brought to work is astounding, I hope they realise that. It looks like you might have to give the tailstock a bit of a birthday very soon.Marcel.

    Hey Adam, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but regarding the tailstock, check under the quill for an opposite set screw thread as I think I saw a flat there too and it makes sense that there would be two or you're bending the tang and it won't actually tighten well.

      +Abom79 nice video, I'm a retired carpenter, and really admire those old wood toolboxes. I don't think they are really that hard to make or duplicate, but nobody wants to take the time. you can tell they are built by craftsmen. When I bought my first lathe, the seller gave me a similar box, (9 drawers) with a brass label on it that says "RAYMOND HALL". I don't know if that was a brand or a duplicate with the builders name made for it. If any one knows please let me know. Any how thanks for the video and the lathe dog tip. JB.

  • @bcbloc02

    I have always found it odd that the tailstock on my Monarch has no provision for tang drive of the MT tools. I don't have a knock out hole either. I have to do full retraction of the ram and then it self pushes the bits out. I don't really have any problems with bits spinning though even on sizes to 3in. On the big boys I take a board and crank into it to seat the bit and then I do my cutting. That box looked really nice shape. Maybe some seamstress kept her sewing supplies in there instead.

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  9 років тому

      +bcbloc02 Brian, look inside your tailstock and see if its got the built in tang drive. I bet if you dont't have a screw like mine it's made into the quill. If the big drills don't spin this may be the case.
      That box is super clean.

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02 9 років тому

      I am sure it doesn't as I never have to clock a bit to get it in. I just slam them home when I put them in and they usually drive fine. On the big bits I just crank them into a block of wood and they seem to always sit tight enough for drilling. sometimes I can't hardly get the tail to turn back hard enough to knock the bits back out when I really get them stuck in good.

    • @davidrichards5594
      @davidrichards5594 9 років тому

      +Abom79 The quill on your Monarch tailstock is pretty interesting. The slot might not be for ejecting with a drift, it might be for pulling tooling in and holding with a wedge. Really old machines, like my boring mill have no tang engagement either, they used MT bars with slots through the taper. A wedge driven through the quill pulled them in and drove them. Old, old school....Dave

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02 9 років тому

      David Richards
      My G&L is MT6 and it has two holes, one for the pull in wedge and one to eject. The book says the pull in is only used for face mills and tooling that might pull out, things like drills it isn't necessary for because the feed forces the bit in tighter all the time. I am not sure if mine has tangs in it or not, I suspect not as G&L had their own design that used 2 big lugs on the nose of the spindle to drive high torque tooling with.

    • @davidrichards5594
      @davidrichards5594 9 років тому

      exactly right, my 2.5 G&L has the same set up: #4 MT, no tang locks, two slots and the crossways slots across the end of the spindle. Yours must be #6MT or bigger. I've never seen any tooling with a pull in slot, but I'm going to try to cut some in some arbors that I have for it.....Dave

    great but on the Gerstner. gorgeous box, would love to get my hands on one, just need to get a few more tools to fill that many drawers, is there a good fix on having a worn out or reamed tail stock like that on the monarch. other than repetition, what are some good resources on sharpening drill bits?

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  9 років тому

      The tailstock can be repaired in a few different way, easiest would be to face the end off. You can use a reamers to make sure there are no high spots in the tapered bore.
      There's been quite a few videos released on drill bit sharpening, me including. Google search is your friend.

    Thanks again for another good SNS. Great score on the Gerstner and the Lunkenheimer 1 1/2. With the drill not seating in the taper, can you relieve the area at the larger diameter to allow it to seat in father? ( a straight diameter at the large end to remove some of the main body length ). When you were setting the 8" diameter part in the four jaw, that would have a been use of standoffs in the T slots. That's what I do in the 32" four jaw chuck at work. Thanks again Jeff

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  9 років тому

      +JRD77VET Yes I could machine the shank a bit to allow it to fit, but it may be tricky to hold. I have used standoffs before when we had our big Monarch. Id like to make a backing plate like Tom uses.

    • @JRD77VET
      @JRD77VET 9 років тому

      +Abom79 Here's an idea to hold the drill bit in one of your lathes if it has a center on the tang ( most MT drills do ). Either find a piece of tubing or pipe the drill body fits in. Drill and tap two holes 180 across from each other to hold the drill against the inner most part of the flutes. Weld a cap on the other end. Put the adapter in the four jaw and the live center in the tang end. Indicate and cut the relief. I wouldn't get too fancy with the adapter since it will probably be a one time use. Jeff

      @bradley3549 9 років тому

      +jusb1066 I was thinking that maybe he could pull the tailstock apart and face it off which would reset the depth of the taper.

    • @TheDisorderly1
      @TheDisorderly1 9 років тому

      Bradley Weingartner I thought about that too but modifying the quill just didn't feel like the right thing to do. No offense intended, I can't see any reason why your idea wouldn't work.

    • @bradley3549
      @bradley3549 9 років тому

      +metalhead2508 The taper isn't off per se, it's too deep - likely due to wear or past reaming. By facing the quill you restore that depth. If the taper is also in rough shape a reaming will help restore it, but will make the depth problem worse not better.

    • @bradley3549
      @bradley3549 9 років тому

      +TheDisorderly1 It's a tossup for sure, could modify the tool(s) as well. If the taper is out of spec however you don't have many options without perhaps sleeving it.

    On that 2 5/8" drill, couldn't you just chuck it up and turn the shoulder back? The but end of the drill is probably soft, carbide would cut it fine .Shouldn't take much . only problem would be holding it.

      +tim trott I'm sure I could, may be tricky to hold it.

    I think there must be a Adam algorithm that determines flea market prices that only applies when he shows up. I bet Adam paid 1940's retail price.

    Love the Video....
    My question is this, That Lathe Dog you used, could that not have been used on the bigger bit? Sorry for the question, but I'm not a metal worker, but I do learn a lot watching your videos.

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02 9 років тому

      +bheagle65 Not with it loos in the hole it would just bang around unsupported. The dog is just to prevent twisting.

    • @bheagle65
      @bheagle65 9 років тому

      bcbloc02 Ahhh thanks.... now I get it.... I guess some kind of Sabo like they use in shotguns or cannons, around the end of the bit would also not work then to center the end inside the hole.

    • @bheagle65
      @bheagle65 9 років тому

      +bheagle65 OOps it spelled "Sabot"... sorry. sabot /ˈsæboʊ/ is a device used in a firearm or cannon to fire a projectile, such as a bullet, that is smaller than the bore diameter, or which must be held in a precise position.

    I'll bet you could send that tail stock spindle off to a machinist and they could make you one better than new.

    Take the tailstock apart! Shave .050 off the end. Sure, the measurements might be a bit off, but you can seat better!

      +Abom79 Nah, just face the end of the drill bit above the shank since they are usually not hard there. Done it many times to use drills in older drill presses. Use a sleeve and center to hold it in the 4 jaw.Mike(o\!/o)

    • @Squat5000
      @Squat5000 9 років тому

      Moholo 88 I think the issue is that many bits are slackly held, so facing off will work universally compared to doing it for each bit.

    • @experiencingtechnicaldiffi5184
      @experiencingtechnicaldiffi5184 9 років тому

      +Cody Smallwood If there are many bits, then yes. Sounds like this is an odd bit which might also not fit other machines. Although, from the looks of the quill someone may have buggered the tang slot, drilled and reamed the quill and added the setscrew to drive the drills. I would have to see it to be sure. Never saw a setscrew used like that and some machines don't drive the tang just use the taper.

    • @Squat5000
      @Squat5000 9 років тому

      Yeah, I have a smaller one at home, and the quill actually slides in. Indexes to a slot. The set screw causes another major problem: imbalanced force on one side throwing the bits of center. Unless you use two... But then it's too much work.
      I remember Adam saying he believed it had been out thinks it was reamed, and that most of his bits are sloppy, not just these but ones.
      Love the back and forth. These machining channels have very active members for sure!

    24:30 why do you do those 2 pre cuts? (the one in the center and the other).
    Sorry i'm not an expert of manual lathes.

    • @Abom79
      @Abom79  9 років тому

      +Modelero Makes pushing that drill through easier, it relieves the center so that there isnt so much pressure on the chisel point of the drill, the machine, and the workpiece.

    • @Modelero
      @Modelero 9 років тому

      +Abom79 I mean the 2 pre cuts before facing the entire piece, i don't think they are related to the drilling.
