  • To keep up with shaping leather masks for the Etsy shop I decided I needed a better way to shape the leather. Something easier on my thumbs. I tried a foam press like is used for Kydex and didn't like the results. So now I am making a vacuum press. I already had most of the fittings and the pump which is the most expensive part.

If you want to make one of these yourself here is a list of parts that you can buy from Amazon. Some of these are exactly what I used and some are ones that might work even better than what I had. These are affiliate links so I do get payed a little bit for advertising for Amazon

From experience, you are going to burn that pump out sooner than later. You can get a vacuum regulator, or turn off the pump when you reach maximum vacuum.

I make masks out of 4-5oz vegetable tanned. Haven't tried this yet with anything heavier.

Be awesome for holsters if you have the gun or a blue gun on hand.

Should work. You might need to be careful it doesn't shape the leather too tight around some parts of a gun, like sights or an ejection port, or you might not be able to draw it from the holster. There are blue guns that are sold prepped for shaping leather or kydex.

Amazing! Does this work with full face masks too, like does the leather wet form around the entire skull or do you end up with wrinkles?

It is a lot more work to shape a full face. There is always a problem with wrinkles between the nose and upper lip, and extra leather bunching up around the edges. I did use this press in a later video to shape thicker leather on a skull for making a skull shaped water bottle.

How long do you let the vacuum run once the form is pulld down?

I release the vacuum almost immediately maybe 10 or 20 seconds. Sometimes I don't like how it formed so I put it back on and try again. It seems to work best when the leather has had a chance to dry a bit. If it is too wet the leather doesn't seem to hold its shape very well after releasing the vacuum.
